@@NatGeo that humans are truly complex and though he probably was an above average ruthless leader, he was a genius and Visionary in building. The megalomania that must have come with his accomplishments.

Augustus Caesar and Herod the Great are both great builders during their reigns because of extensive building projects and architectural transformations they have made.
The tomb found probably belongs to Herod. Red is associated with royalty and the gems and artifacts buried with him after his death were probably looted by rebels who hated his subservience to Rome.
Purple bro… purple was and is associated w/ royalty… Maybe before the Phoenicians began manufacturing a purple dye derived from predatory sea snails “red was a thing” idk 🤷
Herod was so fond of himself, I feel he would have made certain that his name was definitely attached to his tomb, and very easily identifiable ... but maybe not 🤷🏽♀
Herod supported Mark Anthony at the beginning of the triumvirate, but like every shrewd politician, he switched allegiances when he saw that the political winds were blowing in Augustus's favor.
Herod the great was also played by Claude Rains In the 1965 film "The Greatest Story Ever Told". It was Claude Rains final film , before his death on May 30th,1967 at the age of 77.
Herod was certainly paranoid. By the end of his reign, he had gone mad and blind, (probably caused by the terrible things he had inflicted on his wife and children).
I don't think it was because of what he inflicted on others, that's all fiction, there is no atonement, he was ruthless to the end, and certainly not some type of karma, although we like to think that. What was the average life expectancy, wasn't there many who suffered ailments in that time?
Or more likely... He poisoned himself, like so many ultra wealthy of that time: by consuming far too much lead tainted wine. Added to that were the many quack cures and long life potions, being investigated by doctors, that contained mercury. The people who could afford these nostrums were again the very wealthy.
Herod most likely suffered the malady very common to the ultra wealthy of his time: mental illness due to his intake of toxins. Leaded wine was a common drink available to the rich. So were "medicines" and long-life potions containing mercury and other toxic metals. Add those things to the stress of being an unpopular ruler, can and did result in people like Caligula, Nero and possibly Herod.
Love the video, But I noticed that you mentioned the Temple and the walls, but didn't dare to use the word "Temple Mount" and his expansion of it, nor a word of his building in Hebron.
The tomb that was discovered is likely that of Herod. The color red, often linked to royalty, and the gems and artifacts buried with him after his death were probably plundered by rebels who despised his allegiance to Rome.
The guy trying to dispute the tomb says the site isn't "Royal". Well, if there's a more Royal site, why wasn't it found while searching for the site for years? And as far as the gold and jewels, the tomb raiders that smashed the sarcophagus would have made off with that. That doesn't make sense.
Its the sims 3 build music for me (e.g min 35.. 35:30)... on a doc that gets into king Herod's master builder quality and the mammoth constructions throughout his reign...though odd jovial placement at min 37 after they talk about Netzer's death. Lol
It would make sense for the tomb to be of Miriam and the sons he had put to death. Her tomb would be ornate as a queen. But Herod wouldn't have been buried with others. And as monumental as he liked to build, I would have seen him building at the top of the staircase even before some three person tomb on the side of the hill.
He never qualified for " the great" addendum, was just the tyrant when Jesus the Greatest lived incarnate. "The Great" is and should be reserved for those who brought a wide range of people together.
The premise of publishing scientific data is that your academic peer group replicate the results of your experiment, thus establishing your data's veracity. In archeology, the stones are there; hence, your thesis that it belongs to "him/her" is what is attacked. The point is to render your "it's his/hers" point as flatulent BS. And that is what this video is about.
The Western Wall in NOT the most sacred site for the Jews. It is simply the closest one can get to pray to the holy of holies that was in the heart of the Jewish Temple. This is the area under the Dome of the Rock - muslim colonisers built their place of worship on top of other people's holy sites, just like they did and still do all over the world.
KJV John 8:57-58 57 Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? 58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
This professor Patrich guy is, in my opinion, the absolute worst kind of intellectual; not a single segment with him did he provide facts, evidence, or anything to indicate it was not the tomb of Herod. All this guy did was complain in a sixth grade way "Wheerrreee? where are da peeeople standing??? wherrreee???" jesus what an eye roll of a human.
There is NO dispute with history and facts….. Israel is real ….. Praise the God of Israel Who has sustained His people for thousands of years and is Coming soon …… Jesus Christ is Lord!
I'm here for another Herod update. Since I began learning about Herod the Great, I've remained fascinated.
And I as well!! Fascinating guy!! 👍🏾😅❤

@NatGeo great to see this. Its more like a puzzle than a history

Very Great information ❤
Thank you
If Herod existed, proven by accounts and his architectural imprints, then Jesus Christ definitely is real. God is real. Hallelujah! 🙏
Fascinant. Es magnifique 👍

Yeah it’s his tomb. The rebels and others ravaged it over the subsequent years to the point only the stones were left behind.
Hey National Geographic, upload more videos of Tigers, Elephants, and Lions, those are good and I like.

Wow!
I was in mazhada it's incredible!!!!!! Wow!!! I was in the palace
Herod didn’t build the western wall It was a remain of the Temple of Solomon
Herod was played by the great Anthony Hopkins in Mary netflix series. Revealing a great person, ruthless, but awesome.
I was thinking that Donald Trump reminded me of Herod from the Bible, and this video appears 😁 is this a sing from heaven? 🙀🤔🤔🤔
Like,Saville, in all humanity's sake. Thankyou. Prayers for humanity.
One thing for sure, Herod is dead!
The young people probably don't realize all the interesting history that surrounds them and is definitely a very interesting history

Which Harold here? There were two. Father and son.
I stand corrected. Understood there were two. One BCE and another CE.

جون كينيدي سبب وفاتها
I relate to this King.
Well actually the Bible doesn't say how many wise men there were😮
Why wouldn’t the tomb be in one piece? Why would it be all broken up if it was hidden?
Where’s Sid’s play button
If you're interested in Herod's tomb, shut it off now. If you want a history lesson on his life....Guh head...
Check the history channel, maybe a new ancient aliens is available.
He fid not design these buildings but he had them built by the best, probably with a few Romans .

All this and yet no 'Palestine' antiquities in Israel except a few 2nd century mosques..oh but those are Arabic and Turkish actually.
