  • We invited five young Singaporeans to discuss whether the idea of consent. Considering 2020, there are many things to consider when consent is involved - a yes is simply not just a yes anymore. What are your views on consent?

    point 1: Agree that people mature differently but letting a "matured" 14 y/o have sexual relations shouldn't be allowed as "maturity" is hard to define (as well as the pre-frontal cortex development is accomplished at the age of 25). A combination of mature, legal age, as well as a mature attitude, should be pre-requisites. The only thing government can impose is the age of consent. The rest is up to you and your partner to practice safe sex.
    point 2: Emphasis shouldn't just be placed on knowledge. It should be placed on actions and due diligence. If you didn't do your due diligence (know the person you're having sex with) and your actions weren't virtuous and were irresponsible then you should have a share of the blame. It is irresponsible to have sex with random people and the "victim" needs to bear some consequence/responsibility. [specifc to this example]
    point 3: consent can be given and taken away at any time. A strong healthy relationship with a respectful partner is the way to go!
