- Here is a video of a level I've created in Unreal Engine 5. I wanted to recreate the first level from Return to Castle Wolfenstein, but I wanted to make some modernised changes to it. I didn't want to do a one to one remake as I wanted to have some fun. There are no enemies or much gameplay as such, its just a walkthrough of the level. Enjoy.

Its amazing how older games were so good at sounds when graphics weren't all that great. Riven, thief etc.
My favorite game of all time and wow this looks great! Sigh really makes me wish for a definitive edition of this and Wolf enemy territory.

The thing that bugged me here, the weapon arm have no outfit cuffs. Looks as if the the character is running around in a T-shirt 😀!
Luger looks tiny.
I do like some areas redone- so it's not a 100% copycat, but a revamp, which is fine! Although I loved winter environment over the castle more. But this looks great too!
Anyway, I would give huge thumbs up for you for this work. You kept the atmosphere intact.

I've played through RTCW on the PS2 countless times, so I really appreciate the quality improvements and attention to detail here. Not just the graphical enhancements, but the dark atmosphere, lighting and effects presented is very consistent with the original game. I love it.

That is even better than the last time, Chris, very impressive indeed. I thought you'd given up on the project, I'm glad to see that's not the case. You've stayed faithful to the original game, the sounds, the atmosphere, the music and the new weapons also look great too.
You should team-up with someone who can create the A.I. and make a genuinely playable level, it would be phenomenal. Thanks for all your hard work.
Bro this is really impressive! This game was my childhood, and I'm really glad to see it in a new light. As a programmer that dabbled a tiny bit in GameDev it seems like really impressive work (but perhaps I am biased due to the selected game). I am interested in making a UE5 remake of it at some point, so this is encouraging to see! All the best.

Motion Blur now removed (I didn't realise UE5 had it turned on by default). Made some other minor changes. Some area's look fairly dark which I think is due to RUclips's poor video compression
PLEASE NOTE: This is not a remake of the game and is just a demonstration/showcase of the level. This was created for a portfolio and I never intended to release it, but at the request of many here it is. Therefore, there is no gameplay, enemies etc as that was never the intended purpose.

@@Chris-ij3jx Thx for your quick answer ! But ther is no exe; after extraction there is only 2 directories: Movies and Packs. And Packs cannot be extracted.

I think if you can get more indirect lighting or global illumination somehow, it would look better. There is some pitch black spaces, that makes it look less realistic. Also soft shadows if possible, that would also help a lot with the realism. Especially at the fireplace.

The amount of detail, only in the first mission is almost frightening, I can already imagine how the rest of the game will look, if you decide to do it in the future of course.
It's so well made that it's totally worth all the effort that has been put into it.

Thanks for the kind words, i dont intend to remake anything else other than this level, its just a showcase of the level and nothing more really, i added some gameplay elements but only to help showcase the level. E.g the hand looks crap as its just a placeholder more than anything, it was just myself that made this but I did take some weapon sounds from real RTTW
I see, but it's really amazing, and this game really needs a great remake.
A team from Poland, called Ress Project PL, were working on a total remake, but unfortunately they stopped their work.
And RtCW is getting really old, even after all the improvements done to it those last 22 years, like RealRtCW 4.0, and Enemy Territory Single Player.
Looking good overall, but its a lil too dark. I can see you invested into weather - lighting, wet surfaces and windows. The location is now somewhere near the sea which I think is quite a welcoming change. You could've highlight more of the castle architecture if chosen opposite weather conditions and TOD while also adding and expanding more on it, but I guess this is off scope in general or for this specific stage.
Were you making all of those assets yourself? I would consider you did the large stuff like architecture but I wonder what about small props like radios?

8:42 I love how the light from the lightning shines through the window and shows all those rays of light. Good job with this recreation 😀 Have you heard of WolfPT? It's RTCW with path tracing, and I'm looking forward to playing it. RTCW is my favorite single player game from the 2000s.
Yeah it looks pretty cool, although there isn't actually any raytracing turned on. I could enable ray tracing but feel its not the performance hit.

That is a masterpiece! Thought you gave up progressing. You use "Ultra Dynamic Weather" for wet ground? How do you make the same textures wet and not, by creating second master material?
Yeah I used the UDS plugin (it’s to awesome not to) . I duplicated some materials and adjusted the UDS material functions for the wet weather effects e.g. puddles, material wetness etc

Why does the lighting look so off on the hand? sometimes it doesn't look like it matches the environment at all?
The mesh for the hand isn’t very good, but like I’ve said it’s just a place holder to demonstrate the actual level and nothing more.
How long did you need to make this level? Are the assets yours? :) Looks good, I just got the nostalgia feeling to play this game again :)

This one isn't out but RealRCTW is very good. Nowhere near Unreal Engine but it's freely available on Steam as long as you have the base game

I have 2 questions for you
1. Wouldn't you like to approach Beshesda, show them what work you do and make a remake? It looks brilliant and you can see how much heart was put into it. A lot of people would buy a remake of "Return to Castle Wolfenstein"
2. Today there are a lot of indie games made by even one creator. Would you like to create your own game inspired by the Wolfenstein series? and releases, for example in early access? You have a very good talent. It would be a pity to waste it.
I'm not sure why they've not chosen to remake it, it's the most popular of the Wolfenstein series and everybody loves it. I'd love too but I just created this for my portfolio more than anything, I don't feel i'm "talented" enough to do anything like that. Projects like that take a lot of amazingly talented people.

Both CP2077 and now AW2 have set the bar high. UE5 is still playing catch-up.
UE is just an engine, any talented team can make a great looking game. You could easily make AW2 on UE, Cyberpunk is now running on UE I believe and doesn’t look any different to CP2077 engine.
@@Chris-ij3jx CP2077 uses the inhouse REDengine. CD Projekt Red announced some time ago that they will be dropping it in favour of UE. This appears to be due to the lack of talented people available to maintain the engine.
Whilst it is true that you could make AW2 in UE, or for that matter any other engine, it just won't look as good, which is why so many people are talking about it.
It's easy to find coders but hard to find good coders which is why so many software houses use off the shelf engines.

Hello, can we maybe get support for 3440x1440 resolution as well?
I don’t plan on it. The reason being is that this was just a piece for a portfolio, not an actual game. I never intended to release anything originally, it’s more a showcase of a level than a game, hence the focus on the level and lack of gameplay etc
@@Chris-ij3jx ok I see, I actually managed to work around it via Steam, added as non-Steam game and set -w3440 -h1440 as launch parameter and then pressed F11 to go full screen :)

@@Chris-ij3jx ahhh okay so maybe that's why I fell through the map once I went out upstairs and turned back and went back in. :) I had to restart the level as I could not get out.
@@Hopkins955 more than likely the case, possible due to the high resolution and wider screen size the camera can’t quite work out what and when to stream in parts of the level.
In the previous video at 7:20 it was more beautiful with a checkerboard floor)

How long it takes for one to create something like this? Probably depends a lot on whether u need to do the models and textures by yourself.
That’s a difficult question. Erm, I’d say to complete this it probably took me a around a year on and off. However, that’s just to complete the core of it. I spent another year or so making it nice. Because this was a project I wanted to learn from, I implemented lots of new things I’ve never done before. Even porting to UE5 was a pain as I had to learn some of its new features.
But if I were to start again now, it wouldn’t take anywhere near that long
