    My dad's friend was a high school basketball coach back in the 1990's in Wisconsin. One year he went to a basketball coaching clinic in Indiana that was run by Bobby Knight. Knight was his hero. During the clinic some of the high school and other coaches were talking and laughing while the high school and/college kids that volunteered to do demonstrations at the clinic were doing drills and a demonstration.
    Knight started yelling at the coaches who paid money to attend the event and told them to shut the fuck up. He was like " these fucking kids volunteered to be here and are taking the time out of their summer break to perform these drills and demonstrations for you. They deserve your attention and respect. If you don't want to be here then leave. He yelled at them like he would any of the kids on his team.
    He did not disappoint to say the least.

    My little nephew was flying from Kentucky to Denver to visit his dad.
    He got seated next to Coach Knight.
    He said to Coach, “You’re Coach Knight?”
    Coach said, “Yes glad to meet you.”
    Nephew said, “My granny Griffin in Kentucky likes you but my Paw Paw doesn’t like you at all.”
    Coach said, “Well son that’s ok. I’m sure I’d like both of them if you’re their relation”.
    What an awesome thing to say to a little boy.
    Ps my dad (Paw Paw) eventually learned to respect the Coach. Thought he got a raw deal in Indiana.

      Indiana put up with him for far too long. He bullied women professors and deans of dept.'s for asking for more money for their dept.'s and not supporting him and the sports teams. What a monster of a human. He'd never make it in the business world. He and Bo Schembechler were friends. I grew up loving Bo but when he became the Tigers GM he treated the office workers, mostly women who worked for Tigers for years, like college football players threatening to fire them constantly. After he was fired they went out that night and had a dinner celebration. I know because my Aunt was one of those workers.

    Bob Knight was a great coach but there’s more to why he eventually had to retire. Compare him to Coach K of Duke, who just recently retired on his own terms as the all time leader in wins in college basketball history. Coach K learned to evolve and adapt, Bob Knight never did. Bob became a dinosaur that just couldn’t understand the direction college basketball was going. Coach K embraced the 3 point shot and one and done players who only went to college for one year and then straight to the NBA. Even Bob himself would consider Coach K the best of all time.

    what a great coach! so many winners have played for him. I have known him since 1966 when my dad coached football at west point and we lived next door to him. All the coaches live on a block called Bartlett Loop. He and my dad often spent time in the evening talking in the backyard. Later, after I had finished high school and college my dad told me a story that says much about the wisdom of coach Knight. Dad told me that one night soon after we moved in Coach Knight said to me dad " Bob (they both had the same first name) you are going to love these kids! they will give you 100% effort and focus. But you have to remember one thing every day, you have to be the biggest son of a bitch in their day!" I had just graduated from the academy and had played football and basketball there. So I understood the comment. cadets get up at 5:45 every day and are being pushed all day long. If the coaches are not intense with the players they are going to relax and take it easy because they are humans.

      @ericday4505 2 года назад

      I don't quite understand why you have to be an SOB, Jay Wright was a good man who produced good men, and there are many others as well. You don't have to be a prick to get young men to listen to you, you do have to be able to sell your ideas, and it helps if you have a winning track record. But no you don't have to be an SOB.

    • @bemore1134
      @bemore1134 11 месяцев назад

      It's an interesting take. There have been coaches at the service academies who have been just the opposite--after a rigorous day, they try to get the players to relax a bit. The key is to be yourself, which Coach Knight always did. And in the process he not only was successful, but earned immense respect from many of the people who performed for him--people who know the entire man, warts & all, and aren't in the same boat as people who never met the man and, sadly, let the media form their opinions.

    • @bemore1134

      @@mikebradshaw6484 Like anyone he certainly had his faults, as he (unlike many in his profession) has admitted to. But why do you think it is, that many people who were much closer to him than I assume you were, swear by the guy? I look at the entire man. I certainly don't let my entire opinion be formed by those who just flat out didn't like him. There were many sides to this guy, and the things that he did for people went largely unmentioned, especially by him.

    What a great coach and mentor of men. He has repeatedly said his greatest accomplishment in coaching was not the National Championships at IU or the rebuilding at Texas Tech or even breaking Dean Smith's record. He said his greatest accomplishment was his coaching at West Point. He was training and coaching young men to fight and defend for our Nation's freedoms. That speaks volumes about his character and patriotism.
