Great story and I met Landon Turner twice at his home in Indianapolis in 1986 and 87 and we talked about Coach Knight and his time playing basketball 🏀 for Indiana. Always enjoyed seeing him and talking to him when I met him. Great guy him and Coach Knight

I wasn’t a big Knight fan, but I do always look for good in people. The fact that he was one of Landon’s first visitors in the hospital tells you he loves his players more than they knew.

It's been well documented that Coach Knight raised 500,000 dollars including kicking 60,000 dollars of his own money to build Landon Turner a wheelchair accessible home.
This is just one example of the countless number of things he did for people at their deepest time of need.

I am not sure how I ended up here but I learned some things today. I never heard of Landon Turner. He had accomplished a lot before his accident and figured out how to make lemonade out of some sour luck. Good for him.
Bob Knight seemed to have a good heart but he would hide it behind sarcasm, tough words and actions.

Jonathan Ellis Yea Bob Knight is a good man, a coach I would have loved to play for and honestly needed at that age when I was a knucklehead. If you’re a father why wouldn’t you want your son to play for a man like that? We’ve gotten way too soft as a society, it’s a shame because makes him about to be a monster.

He has a bigger heart than people realize - his 98% graduation rate emphasizes that.
Plus, when Ryan White, that young man from Indiana who was diagnosed with AIDS from a blood transfusion was basically shunned by Kokomo, IN, he reached out and befriended Ryan. He was appalled at how White was being treated.

The Scatman Tim could do various sports like swimming and volleyball which gave him a good consistent base. That’s why he played 20 years and the last 7 having an injury that would have ended many players’ career. The Indiana guys didn’t play other sports with the exception of Buckner and Randle El.

What would you expect a coach to do? Tell his player, "You're paralyzed, so you're worthless to the team. We're going to take away your scholarship instead of just wasting one on you"? Knight did what any other Division 1 men's basketball coach would have done. At least Knight didn't put his hand on Turner's throat. Bobby Knight's a jerk who embarrassed the United States by getting arrested at the Pan American games and accused of trying to punch a policeman. Way to go, Bobby!

There's a way of seeing the negative in everything I suppose. You could say his good acts like this don't make up for the bad ones, not sure I agree, but there's an argument to be had, but no not every coach would kick in 60,000 1981 dollars which would have bought you a decent house at the time. I was surprised to look up and see that he was never all that well paid at IU either, his last year there he made under 200k, although he had other side things like a TV show, radio show and other things that brought in side income, but still most coaches at big schools don't need to do anything extra to get wealthy.
