The list is missing most of Finnish rock, metal, rap etc. (including 1970s and 80s punk and new wave), and even the songs that are from actual rock bands are the most benign glittery radio friendly pop songs they have. Not really the picture i have of the Finnish music - i guess lists like this are very personal, and this was gathered by someone who likes soft pop more than i do ;-)
Could be something like most played songs in radio or something. I've definitely heard all these. But yeah, considering how many metal bands there are in Finland, I'd have expected to hear at least some here.
This list is missing most of Finnish music - where is Suomi-rock, rock, metal, and especially rap. However, it does in some ways reflect the music of its time. Thus, myself I am not really that miffed.
Just notice: this is a video of only one kind of music, the popular radio music, iskelmä (Finnish schlager). There are other videos in yt that contains rock, metal etc. from Finland. The song from 1962 Tipitii was Finland's entry for Eurovision. And as you noticed the last one was Erika Wikman with Cicciolina from 2020 when she competed in the UMK (national selection for Eurovision for Finland) but did not win.
Yes no one singing in English no Bomb Funk MC was big in the 90,s snach hit Freestyler played all the time on MTV or Nightwish, Lordy and many moore band.
Speaking of Eurovision, you might want to dig into the finnish hard rock/metal scene, perhaps starting from Lordi (Hard Rock Hallelujah being the winning entry). I personally prefer The 69 Eyes and NIghtwish.
I think our language has been a blessing for our music. People have tried pretty much every genre under the sun in Finnish and it has given us a beautiful variety of things.
The first singer, Tapio Rautavaara, was also an actor and an Olympic athlete. He won gold in javelin at the London Olympics in 1948. He also threw over two metres over the current world record in 1942 during training while serving in the military, he was then in the best shape of his career but... you know.
Swedes and German people call it schlager and I think that's what you would also call it in English. But iskelmä does also take influences from other genres so some of it might sound more like tango and some more like country (what Dwayne said about Anne Mattila - Perutaan häät) 😊
in 2:41 is the song called 'ei tippa tapa' is pretty famous and liked song in finland because ei tippa tapa means you dont die if you drink little and you dont drown in a bucket of alcohol
We have a lot of different genres that are simultaneously popular. I'd love to see more songs from same year to give more accurate view of what was popular instead of just one short clip of one song per year.

Finland is full of bands, and every one of them experiences the full evolution of the sound and style a band goes through. What is popular at any point of time is a toss of the dice, something so far obscure can have a breakout hit etc. There are few bands who have a consistent and high following and they are truly cherished here.
If you want more higher tempo Finnish music, I highly suggest Suomirokin evoluutio: ruclips.net/video/G_lz8-wUMk4/видео.html 100 Finnish rock songs over the decades, performed in a single take.

Thank you for this entertaining reaction video. I think how Finnish music seems so diverse - well firstly, I guess it is. It's interesting to notice this, and I haven't really thought about it before. But I just wanted to point out, that there will be different undercurrents. And not everyone at the same time will like what's most popular. And that there will be many different kinds of genres (not shown here) that are popular each given year, to different people. Anyway, you seem like a good guy.👌 All the best!😊 PS. You seemed to like Jenni Vartiainen, maybe you could react to "Missä muruseni on" (in English "Where is my sweetheart"), it's a real Finnish classic.

And it is just a scratch from what really was going on in music on those years. For example 2006 there was a phenomenon called Lordi... ;)

Funny little anecdote about Eino Grön (1963 example). This summer during Juhannus (Midsummer celebration) I went with my brother and his wife to a traditional style Juhannus dance concert and guess who was there the artist? That is right, Eino Grön himself! He even chatted with us a few words as he was entering the stage. Really down to earth kind of guy!

Would the compilation contain only the most played songs of each year? Already in the 50s, there was rock in Finnish, but that list didn't include Finnish rock from the 50s, although the most famous performers are only from the 70s and 80s. If there had been more than one song per year in that list, there would certainly have been representation of several different genres of music for quite a few years.
This list is still kinda limited in genre, it lists mostly Schlager/POP, so it's not representative of the even more varied genres of music on Finnish top lists.
I think Finland is an exception in the sense that lyrics does matter. That's why you are seeing such different genres as well. However, if you look at the actual lyrics of the songs I'm sure you could find some common themes across the years.
Origins of "Hopeinen kuu" and "Olen suomalainen" aren't from Finland, but Italy. Their original names are "Guarda che luna" and "L'italiano". Toto Cutugno, who originally sung "L'italiano", also won Eurovision in the year 1990.
Yeah, a lot of the songs that were played in this video were Finnish copies of the original songs, it used to be quite common practice in those days to translate songs to peoples own language.
It's nowhere near like we'd just enjoy some kind of music some year, all of the genres have multiple artists and bands thriving and popular simultaneously throughout the years

Ei hevi ole "suosituinta suomalaista musiikkia"
Finland is Rock and some others , Nightwish and stratovarius is our best
I expected Ieva's polkka.
Let me ask WHO selected these songs for each year? TERRIBLE CHOISES. For example Klamydia was a great punk band since the 80th's 😂🎉😅
Finnish "songs" aren't that "original" so that's why it's so fast, more or less.
Copy rights where bit more loose in those days. 🤩
there was not nightwish, not HIM.. google more ;)
Yeah, Finnish reggae. React to that!
🇫🇮❤️
Please react to HIM - wicked game
why the fuck there wasnt Darude - Sandstrom in 2001... !!
It would be fun if he would know finnish
The songs are not really very well chosen, not coherent. Maybe do another with another playlist… 🤔 (this is missing almost all the big 80s and 90s bands, for example the biggest one Dingo)
we just don't care about the music charts
