It’s not becoz of the women in the harem. It’s the attitude displayed by the Emperor causing it. The family background of Empress Xiaoxian raised her to manage a royal household. Her background, such as her brother held key positions in the front court, her daughter in a political marriage with a Mongolian prince, made her “competent” in her role being an empress. The background of Ruyi, on the other hand, is different. Her family was dependent on her ( no bros held prominent positions). It is a lot harder for Ruyi to manage those women and to earn the respect from the emperor, compared to Empress Xiaoxian.
The problem in the ancient China marriages in the upper class... is that a woman may earn the love interest from the spouse but it is hard to earn the respect... due to lower education in general for women, political sensitivities, management of the household finances etc.
former empress xiaoxian was raised to run a noble household so she was good at being the empress but she wouldn't have been treated so badly the way the emperor is treating ruyi bec xiaoxian had a powerful family. so in the emperor's mind xiaoxian would always be the example of a "perfect" empress, though she never had the problems that ruyi has.
She was main the cause of Ruyi's problem when she was alive. She was empress, she had everything except the emperor's love.

Angela V In history, Yongji died young, even before Yongyan become next emperor. Maybe thats why the film didnt mention it. He lost favor due to his mother downfall. In history, the Empress had even more tragic life, she was treated like last class consort, even when she died, she didnt have a Empress funeral, only a concubine’s one (and maybe even worse, since only her son need to attend, all others concubine, princess, prince, noble lady didnt need to). Her relatives/family being striped off/downgraded from some of the noble tittles. Her son because of that has no chance to become next Emperor.
