  • Your problem is not that you release early - its that you release in the wrong place. This video shows the only, fool proof way, to stop releasing early and start compressing the ball. This might be the most important golf teaching video you ever watch.

Great lesson I suffered from the yips with my driver and woods due to a long back swing, so I now have a shorter compact back swing and I hit the ball straighter and longer now playing the best golf in my life! It took 2 years of discipline and a total change but worth it.

Best instructional video I have ever watched on explaining early release in the golf swing as this is my main problem, loss of power and hitting the ground before the ball as I have always been told to make a full turn not so easy at 64. Many thanks for taking the time to explain this, looking forward to more of your postings.

About 18 years ago, I played a round of golf with a relative and his friend who hit the ball long & a single handicapper. His backswing was short like you demonstrated in this video and I wondered then, "How does he hit it so pure and long with such a short backswing?" It didn't dawn on me then, but now you explained how he was accomplishing such a great hit with his golf swing! Thanks, Todd! 👍

Todd... i cannot WAIT to try this. I have been casting my entire life, NO ONE has been able to explain/fix it the way you just did. I am 63 and 6' 3" & not flexible, so NOT having to do a big backswing puts a smile on my face! I used to teach skiing so I am mechanically oriented & I can explain a concept in many different ways so that the concept gets "digested" by the student. You do a great job at that! I completely understood your explanation immediately. Now if it would just get warm here in philly I cant wait to try this out. I will follow up later.

Thanks for the video. I recognise myself in some of those overswings/ early releases which you demonstrate at the start. I know instinctively that oversewing is so wrong but it's hard to resist when you have a big shot or obstacle like water to overcome. I know when I hit the ball sweet and it goes well it's because I swung shorter. Now I have your expert explanation which helps piece the jigsaw together. Cheers!

I discovered this years ago for my swing, and it's good to see this video confirm it. I still struggle with over rotating, especially later in a round when I am more warmed up/loosened up. When I start over rotating my right elbow pulls away from my body, my hands do some weird loopy thing at the top, and I cast the club. Can't find the sweet spot to save my life. But when I keep what feels like a half swing, I feel more in control, like I can actually go after the ball with more power, hit the sweet spot more consistently, and hit the ball further and more accurately. Thanks for the video!!!

Excellent Monsieur Graves!! I play golf since 1991 and now I am 58. This release has always been an issue for me I often have to fix and fix again. I realized the benefits of a shorter swing when once playing a 4 iron from a hill with the ball very down and low in my stance. I made a very short backswing and with good rythm the ball flyed like a rocket ! Unfortunately, all my French pros turned me to keep a long backswing . Yes, definitely the best advice and so well explained I had to watch on this video that confirms my belief. Never too late...thank’s. Next step: improving my English!

The longest hitters on tour have huge shoulder turns on the back swing (e.g., Dustin Johnson) but are also able to have great rotation on the follow through. But for those of us who don't have that athleticism, shortening the back swing is one way to avoid the early release and get good rotation on the follow through.

This is 100 percent spot on... I discovered this by accident last weekend. I felt like I might be over swinging and tried my best to swing easy and not take the club back as far, it feels like a half swing (watch what he says at 7:30)... then swing forward through the ball. I wasn't hitting it as far, but it was effortless and straight. Next goal is do that consistently and add the power back in.

  • @cliffhartman3463
    @cliffhartman3463 3 года назад

Great video. I have been told you need a great turn in your backswing to create speed in the swing so that is what I tried to do even though I am not the most flexible person. Trying to turn too much caused in addition to an early release, a reverse pivot / swaying. I discovered from working on the range that as long as a turned enough to get my lead shoulder behind the ball and then rotate hard, I was coming through the ball faster and getting much better compression on the ball. I like your 75 / 35 = 110 description.

Never really tried to shorten my backswing till I watched your video for the second time recently. I tried your swing and others in the last few years I'm 69 now and none of them worked till I committed myself to really shorten my backswing a couple weeks ago. So I tried a conventional swing and yours, couldn't believe how much better my iron striking was as I was chunking and topping them before. With you swing my shots were definitely going straighter and to my surprise further. I'm going to keep working on the single plane swing now with the shorter backswing as it now makes sense to me from your video how you get more club head speed with a shorter back swing due to increased rotation through impact. Glad I gave your swing a second try. Phil from Cleveland, Ohio

Excellent point because this is an adjunct to the hit instinct where the ball becomes the target and all the potential energy is lost before ball contact. They are typically stopping rotation in the backswing as well because they are becoming disconnected and moving their arms instead of turning or rotating the shoulders. This is the most common issue I see with the typical over the top move where it’s even worse because they aren’t rotating on the downswing either.

WOW, Great video, I took it to the driving range and YOU"RE RIGHT. Thanks for explaining the why also, I was taught to make a longer or fuller swing to give everything time to catch up. Thanks for posting this video. Rick

I have a single plane golf swing. About a year ago, I noticed in your videos that the club head at the top of your backswing never went past the ball. Interestingly, I noticed the same in Moe Norman’s backswing. The next time I went to the range I hit practice balls with that thought and was amazed at how much speed I created on my downswing and how much it improved my contact. In short, if I rotated on the downswing with the shorter swing, my release (and contact) was much better/consistent.

I purchased Doug Sanders' book because after a terrible 3 months of MASS FEAR with the take club on arch, flat wrist, supinate left and right forearm and pivot at impact I could NOT hit a golf ball. I went today and based on You tube and golf forum material about Doug Sanders, I took the club back on ONE plane, short and hit what I thought would be straight to the right pushes and SHAZAM hit the MOST consistent golf shots I have had in months. Have you heard of Doug Sanders? I like your stuff. I am a fan.

very true...i limited my back swing about a week ago to a tony finau style, and focus on flipping the lead hand and release toward target...i got 5 yd shorter but much more accurate...it cures my slicing

Hi Todd, gosh it was over 5 months since I posted a comment too you and here I am reading in what I said then! I am swinging/playing alright. The thing is - I watched the blog of those golf shoe's that you were promoting, so I messaged the firm for a pair - they never replied to me? I was touched hearing you say - Moe would have liked these shoe's! I bet Moe is on your mind every day - which can only be a good thing in remembering one so great! I still watch your old and new video's! You are with me on the course and am sure many golfers think the same! Thanks Todd oh and a happy new year to you and your family!

Great video, I've been blocking my drives around 10 degrees right, improving my rotation has got me hitting it straight again :)

I’m a you tube golf junkie and have looked into a lot of swing thoughts and and have taken lesson. Out of all the information I never thought of my issues of topping or coming over the top was a over backswing issue. This may have been my golf aha moment.

All true! Shorter Backswing solves or resolves the problems from early release or under rotation. Good vid....

I’ve always had a short backswing and always thought I was doing something wrong. This made me feel a lot better! Thank you

Thanks for the video. I changed to a 3/4 swing this year prior to watching this video and it fixed 90% of my swing issues. I also ended up getting more distance rather than shorter distance as I thought would happen with a shorter back swing.

I know with my launch monitor that my shorter swing absolutely gives me more yards and crisper contact particularly with my irons and hybrids. I've always wondered why, I find it quite interesting.

I’ve been finding out that biometric move recently while hitting balls into the swamp outback of my house I was embellishing a little bit with more of a 65° backswing noticed how straight and perfect each ball seemed like it flew off the club face

Cool. I might go at this several ways.. 1. Take a 3/4 backswing. 2. Transition from the top of the backswing into the downswing as the clubhead "drops" and make sure I keep rotating to open up my body, i.e. knees, hips & chest to my target into a balanced finish and 3. The longer the club, the "slower" the club will seem coming back thru impact, but I know it's gathering more clubhead speed at just takes more time to come back around.. even if it's actually just milliseconds..
