- Let's face it, the Trinity can be hard to understand. How can God be one God but also exist in three persons? Pastors and teachers have come up with some...interesting analogies over the centuries in an attempt to simplify and explain the Trinity, but unfortunately all of these analogies are totally wrong and actually introduce dangerous heresies that have been rejected throughout church history! I don't think a good analogy exists, but perhaps the best insight we can glean is from Ezekiel 1 when he describes the cherubim. They had 4 different faces each but had one man resembled body.
you don't understand my brother , trinity itself is heresy and wrong view of GOD , God is not triune and the Father is the only GOD jh 17:3, and Jesus is the promised messiah who is glorified by the one GOD the father, acts 2:36-38, and the holly spirit is the name that is given for the spirits of God who are the angels and also the father him self ,that's why satan and his angels are called evil spirits , so pls try to understand this Babylonian teaching , this comment is out of love 🙏🙏

But you have to know who he is correct? He wants us to have a relationship with him. So with whom do we have a relationship with? God the Father? God the Son? Or the Holy Spirit? It’s not just having faith, just not blind faith.
I'm not mad at these analogies because we're just finite humans trying to understand an infinite God but the more we dive into His word, the more we make sense of Him ❤
We don't make sense of Him in that He is non-sensical, but our knowledge of Him, our understanding of His character is deepened as we study Scripture.

2. There is one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
3. The Holy Spirit is God's Spirit.

The word omnipotent is not in the Bible, yet the scriptures teach that God is all powerful.
The word Omniscient is not in the Bible and yet the Bible teaches that God is all knowing.

I believe every analogy we come up with falls short. What’s really interesting is I don’t fully understand the Trinity, but I can recognize when someone tries to come up with an analogy that falls short. It’s like I have a knowledge of what He cannot be like, but I do not know exactly what He is like.
That's where I've landed on the doctrine of the Trinity. While I don't understand the HOW, it doesn't negate the reality of it. Any human analogies trying to explain the Triune nature of God are going to fall short because they are inadvertently putting a limit on God's power which cannot be.

Trinity is a concept to grasp for us. Understanding or good analogy wouldn't save us, but will allow someone to put that strange question aside and focus at things close at hand. Many people are confused by that one concept, and they can't let it slide. Believers doesn't really need an explanation, but unbelievers do. And be humble, don't think you are smarter than church fathers, who wrote the New Testament for you. Trinity is teached from the start of a Church, and you here teaching "modalism" as was described in the video

The best way to understand it is that what makes god god is his divine nature so even if it’s 10 people that share a divine nature, it would still be one God but we have a God that’s 3 in one if they had three separate divine natures then it would be three gods but they share one divine nature so that’s why he’s one god

@@julienielsen3746 I use this too BUT we need to add the caveat that we are made in God's IMAGE so triune, yes but not the same because our mind is not a person on its own, likewise for the soul/body. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
I always assumed that no one took these analogies literally. Obviously they fall short because our human minds can never fully comprehend God, but I still think they can be helpful for pointing people towards the right way of thinking, especially when their shortcomings are pointed out. Is there another analogy we should be using that avoids all these flaws?

Coming to know who God is, is an important aspect of a Christians life.
Chemical theory:.when 3 elements are combined together to form a compound, the 3 can't be separated individually by any chemical reactions or means. At least 2 elements must be together while the one is apart. Same when Jesus was on earth, he was with the Holy Spirit and the Father in heaven. When he initt ascended to heaven after resurrection, the Holy Spirit went back to the Father and Jesus was gloried then he descended to earth to give instructions to his disciples. He ascend back to heaven and sat beside the Father while the Holy Spirit descended/went to the believers.
Math thwoey: 1x1x1=1 when a man and a woman is in union under marriage, God see them as 1. By exponents, 1 raised to the power of 3 is equal to 1.

I appreciate this. But at the same time I don't think presenting these analogies is a problem as long as they aren't taken too literally or if the flaw in it is presented as well.

Sometimes we may think something makes sense, then when we find out what we understand is wrong, it's very fleshly to try to defend it.

@@wendymtzc I never said he wasn’t God. A substitute teacher is still the teacher while the teacher is gone. Also no one has seen or known the father but Jesus all we can know is him so it makes sense that many are confused. If you’ve only ever known and been taught by the substitute teacher than in your eyes that is the teacher but that doesn’t change the fact that once the teacher arrives he has control and authority over the class even over the substitute teacher.

Our triune God can be analogized as one team with three persons on it who have the same personality, powers, and agenda, yet they have different roles within the team to accomplish the same purpose and they perfectly love and fellowship with one another without interchange.
Because of the definition of the word God, there could only be one because separate beings who differ in characteristics and powers and goals would mean that one is supreme over the others. Anyone less than perfectly supreme could not be God, which is why it is crucial to understand that God the Father did not produce or create Jesus and the Holy Spirit but they have always shared everything in common except roles in accomplishing their one will. The Father never submits to the Son and the Holy Spirit, yet they are equal in the essence of who they are.

@@julienielsen3746 Souls, spirits, and bodies are 3 parts that make up one whole person, so this doesn't apply to God because The Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit are three whole persons on their own and Jesus has a spirit, soul and body that is distinct from the spirit and soul of the unembodied God the Father and God the Holy Spirit. As human beings we are one tripartite (3-part) person not a one person trinity of three wholes.
Also we do not exist outside of ourselves to communicate to ourselves, because we are one, but the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit exist distinctly and communicate with each other.
It’s like having a Body, Soul, Spirit but your just One person for real… the same with God, because just like he said He created us in his Image…😊

The triple point of water, I think, is a good analogy. Check it out:
Water boils at 212F. However, if you reduce the atmospheric pressure, it will boil at 200F. Keep reducing the atmospheric pressure and it will boil at 150F, 100F, 50F, 32F.
But hang on! Water _freezes_ at 32F! So at the right temperature and atmospheric pressure, water will boil and freeze simultaneously and therefore exist as a solid, liquid, and gas _at the same time!_ There are videos of this happening; go check them out!

Yes. Triple point is a good example! It can only occur at specific temperature and atmospheric pressure.
However, to say that water cannot be in the form of ice, vapor and liquid at the same time is a simplistic view of primary school science.
Take a glass of water and add ice cubes. You have both solid and liquid form of H2O at the same time. Observe the water droplets at the surface of your glass, they are from condensation of water vapor in the air around the glass. So vapor, liquid and solid forms of H20 can be present at the same time and space!
@@rakuenrider The difference is that individual molecules will shift between states regularly. The vapor forms and rises as ice forms around it and it dissolves into a liquid only to boil again.
In your example, the three stages exist separately and do not transition.

The ice you drop in the water could be from the same batch of liquid water you have in the glass, but the condensation on the outside of the glass will not be. The example has to have the same element existing in three separate forms simultaneously. Not twin elements such as two water molecules. The same element as in the same water molecule. I have an extended original comment of my own on here. Look for it.
@@frogpaste the triple point of water is spot on because all three states exist simultaneously and are all the same "batch" of H2O. This is different from putting ice in a glass of liquid water which may not be from the same batch. But even if they were, the condensation on the outside of the glass isn't. Nor do all three exist simultaneously in the same space as it does at its triple point. The man analogy, with a different analogy is what's spot on. I have an original comment on this video about both of these. Look for it.
My favorite anology is the trinity is the nature of light. All other analogies fail in contrast to this one.
In Christianity each member of the trinity is an indivisible person that shares one essence. Yahweh is tri-une, each person is 100% God not 1/3 God, yet they are 3 indivisible persons. The best analogy I can give for the trinity is the Quantum nature of light.
The Bible says God is light and in Him is no darkness.
"This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all."
- 1 John 1:5
"For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity, that they may be without excuse."

Therefore, it follows that physical created light reflects the nature of God.
Now for the analogy: White light is 1 thing, light. However, there are 3 primary colors of light. They are Red Green and Blue. They are primary because all other colors of the rainbow are made from these 3. These 3 are fundamental.
Light can't be divided from light just as the 3 persons of the trinity cannot be divided. Each person is 100% God, not 1/3 God just as Red, Green, and Blue are not 1/3 of light but are each 100% light sharing the same essence.
Each color is distinct from each other despite being 1 invisible color just as each person of the trinity is distinct. Each member of the trinity is a distinct invisible person that shares one essence. They are Co-Eternal all being 100% Yahweh God but being 3 persons forever.
Another cool parallel is that the rainbow represents the Glory of God.
And, the Bible describes a concept called the 7 spirits of God, which is the different aspects of the Holy Spirit! And each of the 3 colors makes all other colors of light, but the 3 primary colors are essential.
Now, this analogy isn't perfect, but it's the best analogy of them all in my opinion. I don't believe this analogy leads to partialism as most other analogies do. Partialis is a heresy that sees each person as only being 1/3 of God.
I just stick to what the Bible says which is there is one God. Jesus is referred as the Son of God and the Holy Spirit is what convicts us and gives us strength. When u do that and just focus on what the Bible says, all the confusion goes away

Jesus says Himself that He is God. "Before Abraham was I Am," "If you've seen me, you've seen the Father." The Bible is true, it's Holy, and it makes it clear that Father, Son, Holy Spirit is God.
I’m with you except there’s an issue.
If Jesus is not God then when HE died on the cross it meant nothing and us as Christians are screwed and can’t be grafted into anything because God divorced the 10 northern tribes of Israel and in order for them to return to the family they had to be released (per the Torah) from their previous husband (God).
So him dying on the cross followed Torah and allowed Israel to be free from their adulty, allowing “the lost sheep of the house of Israel” to return to the Father’s laws and rules and blessings.
If Jesus isn’t God then we can’t join Him . In revelation there’s 12 gates getting into the kingdom, is there a gate for gentiles ? Nope
@@DustinNuttall I find it useful to just acknowledge the Trinity, Jesus is God and God is three persons and if any questions come up, just to humbly admit i don't understand it either
There are many times when Jesus claims divinity. If you deny He’s God, you call Him a liar, and therefore, not sinless. If He isn’t sinless, He could not pay for all of our sins because He still has to pay for His own.
How many times do I have to hear Christian teachers accusing their Brethren of being Heretics because they don't have a full understanding of the Trinity? This is such a secondary issue and yet you treat it like your salvation depends on it

I think it is different though to say that what someone believes or teaches is a heresy rather than labelling someone as a heretic.
What we believe about God matters. If we are teaching something different than what the Bible teaches, then we are teaching a different god, a false god.

To know both the Father and the Son is eternal life. Based on that, your salvation is dependent on it.
The doctrine of the Trinity is extremely important, even from a salvific point of view. One must believe that Jesus is both the Son of God and God, just as much as the holy Spirit is God and the Father is God.
Obviously no one has a truly full understanding of the Trinity, to do so would be to completely understand God. But if you don't believe Jesus to be God, then you are not saved.

When I taught Sunday school I used the water and egg analogy but also started with God created the water and the egg ( as well as the other three subjects mentioned.) And he used his creation to show us himself. We see the characteristics of God in everything he made. The point of the egg and the water used is to introduce the trinity not to limit the trinity, as the water , egg , sun, clover, and man are a small measure of what our God can do. I often call God the ultimate scientist and mathematician. The great I AM has left evidence of the trinity in these creations to increase our faith in him not to limit our faith.🙏🏽 We just have to open our eyes and look to see God all round us.' All things bright and beautiful all creatures great and small all things wise and wonderful the Lord God made them all...'
The fundamental rules of science and Maths are you can't make something out of nothing and zero +zero makes zero. Wonderful and undeniable proof of God. So for me I have always interpreted the egg and water as evidence of our wonderful creator. GOD has chosen to make them with these properties to increase our faith in him. @@TheRastacabbage I'm not an expert but allow me to share my knowledge to you regarding the Trinity, if you are willing to learn.
Only the ones who believed in the Holy Trinity (one God with 3 personalities where each has distinct roles and responsibilities) will understand Revelation 1:17-18 and Revelation 22:13 (where Jesus declared He is the First and the Last). For Unitarians (one God with 1 personality), these things are very hard to fathom. I used personalities rather than persons in order to emphasize their distinctive character individually where they each can communicate separately just like any person could.
It's all about the WHO and the WHAT. For example, a person can be identified as an individual by the WHO (e.g. John or Peter) and the WHAT (e.g. human being). Therefore, a person is 1 WHO and 1 WHAT whereas God is different. God has 3 WHOs (e.g. The Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit) and 1 WHAT (e.g. God).
For humans,... John is a human being and Peter is another human being thus, in this example there are 2 WHOs (John and Peter) and at the same time there are 2 WHAT (e.g. human being, John is a human being and Peter is a human being). For God,... The Father is God, The Son is God and the Holy Spirit is God thus, there are 3 WHOs (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) and 1 WHAT (God)... NOT 3 Gods but ONE God as explained in the WHAT (above).
People loved finite analogies. If we are to indulge them, the closest analogy I can think of is a CAKE. Let say, we cut the cake into 3 slices. Whether or not you separate these slices from the whole its nature (e.g. CAKE) remains the same or does not change thus, It will have the same name, taste and texture but they are separate (e.g. SLICES). If we are to apply this analogy to the Trinity it would be like, The Father is a slice of God, The Son is a slice of God and the Holy Spirit is a slice of God... even if they are separate their nature (e.g. God) does not change, they remain as God individually.
When Jesus prays, He is talking to the Father NOT to Himself because each of them (Father and Son are distinct persons) and Jesus recognized that the Father is always higher than Himself (in terms of Glory, Status and Power (e.g. omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent)) WHEN in human form. For He (Jesus) set those (Glory, Status and Power) aside temporarily (Philippians 2:5-7) and became human in order to sacrifice Himself for our redemption. But, as soon as He was resurrected all those Glory, Status and Power as God has been restored when He went back to the Father. Thus, He was able to reveal to John the things to come in the Book of Revelation and was able to declare that He (Jesus) was the First and the Last, the same title that was reserved to God/YHWH in the Old Testament (specifically in Isaiah 44:6).
Isaiah 44:6: (Old Testament - where God declared)
"I am the first and I am the last,
And there is no God besides Me."
See, the "NO God besides Me"! for that is the Truth because there is only ONE God as explained in the WHAT (above).
After resurrection and all His Glory, Status and Power has been restored, Jesus now has the authority to declare Himself as God once again for that is WHAT He is ever since the beginning of time.
Like I said, I'm not an expert but I hope the above will give you some insights about the Trinity.

Okay, now that we know what the trinity isn't, how would you describe the trinity? Is there a proper analogy you would use to explain it to a child, for example? I have wrestled with understanding this for awhile now, and I have 4 kids who will probably be asking soon..
For the water case, what about the triple point of water where it is a liquid, solid and a gas at the same time??
This is a very finite and specific point. Thus limiting God to fit into singular constraints; rather than being the omniscient, omnipresent, eternal God.
But wouldn't it suffice for an analogy where we are tryin to put forth a point

@@CommonSense823by your own logic then, Allen can't say any of these can't define Yahweh because that would be confining Him and saying He CANT be these things but the Bible says that "NOTHING" is impossible with Yahweh
I'm glad you went into depth with these explanations. I used to use the analogy with a person being: a father, son, husband... And I never even thought of it as being motorlism.
Stick with what the Bible teaches.
There is only ONE GOD. The one Jesus and his Disciples worship as OUR Father in the heaven.

No analogy fits. Instead we should just figure understand the definition itself. We can understand the definition a concept without fully comprehending it. Like how we can understand infinity is but we can't comprehend it, because while the concept of infinity is still logical (doesn't have a contradiction) it's hard to comprehend due everything in the universe is finite. It's the same with concepts of eternal, timelessness, etc. Can understand, but can't fully comprehend.
God is 1 BEING, with 3 PERSONS. 1 WHAT with 3 WHOS. In this universe, we only see 1 being with 1 person. What I am is a human being, who I am is "(insert name here)". Having 3 separate persons, eternally existing, while singular being is something that's not within this universe. It's still a logical concept, not a contradiction, it makes sense, but our minds just can't fully grasp it due to the confines of our universe. Again, like infinity, eternal, etc.
When using analogy, you only limit it to its targeted context because you are bound to get irregularities if scrutinized enough. All these analogies are only talking about the multi-personality of God, not the partial parts of God since no analogies compare since you cannot divide an infinite in the first place.
Why recourse to analogies? The Bible should be good enough, surely.

I mean i get it... but do you have a better example we can use? Yes analogies break down because we are using finite things to explain an infinate concept. But to tell us here is why you shouldn't use these but not give a better alternate is not helpfull.

It might be that you’re over thinking these analogies . The water analogy helped me understand and now I can say Jesus is GOD .
You know what I think you are right. I was taught with an apple and it did help me to understand. No one can understand without the HOLY SPIRIT. Something's are just unexplainable. Especially when it comes to GOD. GOD gives us what we need at the time that we need it we just have to trust HIM.

Here is Jesus clearly stating that he was NOT God.
(John 8:40) But now you are seeking to kill me, A MAN who has told you the truth that I HEARD FROM GOD.
Jesus was a PROPHET of God.
We as humans, are just trying to wrap our heads around something we can't understand.
And in turn, humans have difficulty understanding human analogies - because each analogy means something different to that particular human.
I can't say the human is being disingenuous or a heretic when they are just trying to use an example that makes sense to them, even if it's not entirely accurate.

The closest thing would be what is written is the Athanasius creed,
That we worship one God in trinity and the trinity in unity, neither blending their persons, nor dividing their essence. For the person of the Father is a distinct person, the person of the Son is another, and that of the Holy Spirit still another. But the divinity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is one, their glory equal, their majesty coeternal.
It would be very hard to explain in human terms and limited vocabulary. This is why when people in the Bible had visions they would say "it is/was LIKE" to describe God with our limited knowledge of our own Earth and less of the universe is just too difficult and would still not fully capture who/what the Trinity really is.
Stay with what the Bible teaches. No analogies needed to trust and believe the TRUTH. This is what TRUE Christians believe:
(1 Corinthians 8:6) there is actually TO US one God, THE FATHER,
Jesus and his True Disciples worship one and the same God. John 20:17.

As we try to make sense of the Holy Trinity by coming up with analogies, me and my wife just concluded right now, that while we understand the Holy Trinity finitely (as we are finite beings) according to the word, the Godhead is just too unique to be compared to or described by His creations. The scripture is enough to know and understand Him as a Triune God, but creation is insufficient to describe His wholeness or completeness with regards to Him as being Triune. We might be wrong, there could be a perfect example out there! His creation tho describes Him, but with regards to the Trinity, He's just too unique! What an awesome God we have!

@@julienielsen3746 it's a good attempt to show the pattern of 3, but not the Trinity. I kinda have a concern with this analogy because the Godhead has distinct mind/thoughts yet one (I could be wrong. It doesnt mean that just because they are in perfect agreement all the time, that we assume they have one mind, as in one source of idea or thoughts. I believe they have seperate thoughts or mind or source of thoughts yet one because they are perfectly God and they agree with eachother and are in perfect harmony with eachother, I could be wrong, I'm still learning more about our God.)
The spirit doesn't have its own mind, and so does the body, the mind belongs to the soul tho. The spirit alone cant be a person, the soul alone cant be a person, and the body alone cant be a person. It is the same pattern as the egg in the video.
It's a nice attempt tho, but only good enough to show the pattern of 3 or symbolic pattern of 3, but not enough to describe the fullness or completeness of the Trinity.
This is what I mean with my comment, God is just too unique, tho hints can be found on His creation.

But another thing I would like to add. When we have conversations with ourselves in our minds, it's like we are more than 1 as well. The mind is like being a person, and we are a person who responds. Our spirit might be like that as well, making us a trinity as well.

This wasn’t helpful at all with all the analogies. In the end you didn’t say what is the right way to think about the trinity.
Our triune God can be analogized as one team with three persons on it who have the same personality, powers, and agenda, yet they have different roles within the team to accomplish the same purpose and they perfectly love and fellowship with one another without interchange.
Because of the definition of the word God, there could only be one because separate beings who differ in characteristics and powers and goals would mean that one is supreme over the others. Anyone less than perfectly supreme could not be God, which is why it is crucial to understand that God the Father did not produce or create Jesus and the Holy Spirit but they have always shared everything in common except roles in accomplishing their one will. The Father never submits to the Son and the Holy Spirit, yet they are equal in the essence of who they are.
Because he can’t give the true analogy, none of us can it’s beyond our comprehension to explain it. So we try our best to understand and break it down to the human mind.
He explained after every analogy what the true Godhead is. The Bible explains it too. He explains the true Godhead throughout the entire video.
I think some people are very heretical in their explaining of the divine nature of God, but I also think if you’re willing to label someone a heretic because they (albeit poorly) try to explain the trinity to someone who knows nothing about the Bible in one of these ways is divisive and gross.

I found this really useful. I think it's great to be able to use these analogies but also to be able to talk about the caveats re modalism etc to help prevent us going astray. Thanks for the work that went into this.
My favorite analogy has always been the family. Curious you thoughts.
When God went to create he spoke to himself in the plural and said “Let us create man in our image.” And he created them male, female, and his first command was to go create another, so what was created in the image of God is the family. In the triune Godhead we have the father, son, and Holy Spirit. Three separate, but one unit. In the family we have father, mother, child(ren) three separate, but one unit. We’re told that God is love “those who don’t love know not God for God is love.” At the heart of family is Love. Man and woman come together cause of love, they become one flesh and the baring of a child is the result of that love. The family is suppose to reflect the triune God. We see God as a whole, and the family is to be seen as a whole, but at the same time they each have their own role. One is not more important that the other.

Allen, in chemistry there is something called a triple point which is the temperature and pressure at which solid, liquid, and vapor phases of a particular substance coexist in equilibrium.
Some things need to be mentioned: The Father, nor the Holy Ghost did not die on the cross, but the Son. The Holy Ghost was sent as the comforter. The Holy Ghost came up prophets of the old testament. There Son does the will of the father, the Father does not do the will of the Son.
Also the holy Ghost don't lift up himself or glorify himself, he glorify's Jesus.
I'm aware but that still fails. Is it that way ALL of the time or only in that moment? Once again, the analogy breaks down. That's even worse. Now what you're saying is that it depends on a perfect environment for God to be three in one. Outside of that environment, the triune God breaks down.

The triple point displays the existence of a triune state of water - not some everlasting example literally equivalent to God. Once you grasp the water analogy, all you need to comprehend is that God is like that, but without the constraints of some condition. Simple as that. No situation on earth is literally going to perfectly explain the Trinity. 🤣 But the water analogy gets about 99% of the way.

Here are the best analogies for the Trinity I've come up with or heard elsewhere.
1. Space, Matter, Time. Each measured differently with a different effect. Each contains the other. Each is not the other. Each IS the Universe in a way while being its own thing as well. Rewind it all and you come to the Singularity or Unified Point.
2. A 3D cone. Think of an ice cream cone. Rotate it. Look down the "hole" part 🕳️ and you see only a circle. Now rotate the cone to the opposite side and you see a point. Now turn it sideways and you see a triangle. Circle, dot, triangle. 3 distinct shapes, all one cone. Also, this analogy deals with dimensions, which I think is on the right track. In 2D, we see the distinctions. In 3D, we see the unity.
3. A trichroic prism splits white light (unity) into 3 frequencies - red, green, and blue (distinction). 3 wavelengths coexisting, one spectrum.
4. The triple point of water occurs at 0.01 degrees Celsius and a pressure of 611.657 pascals. At this point, water can exist simultaneously as ice, liquid water, and water vapor.
5. A hologram. Splitting a hologram into three parts results in three complete images. Each fragment of the hologram is still the entire hologram within a distinct package. In a similar way, each person of the Trinity can be considered separately without diminishing the whole. For example, when Jesus left the Father and came to earth, the Godhead wasn't reduced, as Jesus brought with Him the fullness of the Godhead from eternity.
6. J Warner Wallace's description centering around analogy of relationship/love. Still digging into this one.
7. A single human being is body, soul/mind, and spirit. Image of God.
Did SPACE, MATTER, and TIME exist at the same time? I thought Space, matter, and time did not exist at the same time but they existed with sequence when we go back to the creation. A little bit confusing. 😅

It's like your name, it doesn't actually exist, so too time is just a "naming" of how things have progressed, for our convenience. The period of light we call day, the period of dark we call night, then we divided each into hours which we measured ourselves.

The trinity is unfortunately illogical, unintelligible and unbiblical. My question to trinitarians is why believe something that you don't understand/doesn't make sense? There is 1 true God and if I were to ask you who that was and I was given more than 1 answer... there should be a problem.
Why do you assume that you can understand God? Is theology reduced to what we can understand? Sure the Trinity is beyond human logic. So what? The question that many have wrestled with is how do we affirm Christ's divinity, while acknowledging there is but one God. The Trinity may be apprehended yet not comprehended. It is a mystery and that is okay.
If we limit God to only what makes sense, or what we understand you would never be able to explain much in this world that He created.
What makes him God if you can fully comprehend him?

What trinitarians get confused is that the bible distinguishes between the person of God and the status of God. God is used in different contexts in the bible(patriachs are called God, children of irael is called God, Jesus)however this is not to be confused with the One true God and source which is the Father.
@@CommonSense823 What makes sense is literally what we choose to believe BECAUSE it makes the most sense. You can't explain anything that doesn't make sense and that including the trinity. We are able to explain the things God created because they make sense to us.
Though analogies can’t fully describe God accurately, I do personally think the Time and 3 notes-1 chord analogies are the closest.
Past, Present, and Future are all time and they work simultaneously.
C-Major is comprised of 3 notes working simultaneously which creates the c-major chord.
Again, these are just finite picture types that COULD give a better idea but still doesn’t comprehensively convey an infinite God.

Great discussion on Heresy. it needs more attention, however i disagree that an imperfect example should never be used. I think that many of these analogies a perfectly fine to use, along with explainations of either the Heresy one could conclude or just explaining analogies are never perfect. We as finite being need imperfect examples, thats why God uses them all the time in the Bible, IE..I am the Vine...etc

Jesus teaching about what kind of a being God is. The Father is God, The Son is God, The Holy Spirit is God. They are 3 conscious personal entities but they share in and are the one substance, that is the divine substance. They are the One God, the one being. Our problem is generally we don't see how one being can be more than one person. That is our problem with understanding God. All the persons "always exist", they are outside time. They do not "become" one another. They interdwell each other in a sense as well. The Father is in the Son, The Son is in the Holy Spirit but they are not 3 beings, but the one being. Another analogy is conjoined twins where 2 personal entities share the one body but again this analogy as all analogies breaks down, but at least it is illustrative of the idea that you can have more than one personal entity within something, in that case a body. Maybe it is accurate to say that the persons are conjoined within (existent within but also comprised of) the one divine substance.

1. John 4:24 (KJV)
God [is] a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship [him] in spirit and in truth.
So far, so good
2. John 1:14 (KJV) And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Two for two, we’re on a roll. We have spirit and flesh.
3. Uh, well, uh, hmm… there’s zero scripture that God is, had, became, or otherwise is a soul.
Genesis 2:7 (KJV)
And the LORD God formed man [of] the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
We have man as a soul, but not God. And the Holy Spirit is - well by name alone, a Spirit.
So we have two Spirits and one Flesh, and no Soul. So, the analogy breaks down at this point.

Sorry but I'm going to keep using the water analogy. It's helped my kids grasp the concept of the trinity much more easily. And water can be multiple things at once. I'm literally drinking ice water, while I have a boiling pot of water on the stove. ;)
I used it as well to help my kids get an idea of what the Godhead is but I did tell them that there was more to it but unfortunately no human can explain it fully or understand it. Somethings are left a mystery and if we have faith, repent for our sins, love God and love others we can ask Jesus about it in heaven.

But that same glass of water you are drinking is not ice and steam at the same time. Teach what you want, but with all due respect, this is a false teaching about God. There is no way around it. I'm not trying to be mean here, but the analogy breaks down miserably.
So basically the greatest heresy is the belief that the Trinity is something that can be described in analogy, metaphor or simile. And we could say even the attempt to understand the Trinity is a heresy.

The issue with your comment is that God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit are not the one and same person. They are equally God yet they act distinctly with the Father doing certain things, Jesus doing other things, and the Holy Spirit doing other things, and they communicate with each other. So while the word 'trinity' is not in the Bible, the concept is.
That God is one just means that God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are exactly like each other and never against each other or acting with their own agenda because they are one unit like a team, and no one other than them can be called God nor can we worship one, such as Jesus, without also worshipping the Father and the Holy Spirit

Analogies for the Infinite are partial, and imperfect. Still, these are the best I have come up or that I read elsewhere on comments in this video that describe something about the Trinity.
1. Space, Matter, Time. Each measured differently with a different effect. Each contains the other. Each is not the other. Each IS the Universe in a way while being its own thing as well. Rewind it all and you come to the Singularity or Unified Point.
2. A 3D cone. Think of an ice cream cone. Rotate it. Look down the "hole" part 🕳️ and you see only a circle. Now rotate the cone to the opposite side and you see a point. Now turn it sideways and you see a triangle. Circle, dot, triangle. 3 distinct shapes, all one cone. Also, this analogy deals with dimensions, which I think is on the right track. In 2D, we see the distinctions. In 3D, we see the unity.
3. A trichroic prism splits white light (unity) into 3 frequencies - red, green, and blue (distinction). 3 wavelengths coexisting, one spectrum.
4. The triple point of water occurs at 0.01 degrees Celsius and a pressure of 611.657 pascals. At this point, water can exist simultaneously as ice, liquid water, and water vapor.
5. A hologram. Splitting a hologram into three parts results in three complete images. Each fragment of the hologram is still the entire hologram within a distinct package. In a similar way, each person of the Trinity can be considered separately without diminishing the whole. For example, when Jesus left the Father and came to earth, the Godhead wasn't reduced, as Jesus brought with Him the fullness of the Godhead from eternity.

No, God the Son is not the Father.

No He was praying to the Father. This demonstrates His eternal relationship with the Father, and His dependence on the Father in His earthly body. He essentially became a servant in order to save humanity, which was a part of the Fathers will. He submits to the Fathers will in this case, and that is what is being demonstrated.
The Father and Son have always communicated with each other. Prayer is communication. Jesus was also a man who set an example for us on earth.

I played football in high school against identical triplets. At one point they were ONE fertilized egg. Then they simultaneously became THREE unique persons but have the same DNA (essence). One was QB, one was fullback, and one was the tailback--three unique roles. All working together . . . Hated those guys!!!

Old Testament Jews did not have a concept of “The Trinity “. They believed that God was one. The concept of the trinity arose from the battle between different Christian groups regarding the nature of Jesus. The Ebionites, Marcionites, and Gnostics all had differing opinions on the divinity of Jesus. Was he fully divine or fully human. The group that won the battle for Christianity are referred to as the orthodox group. They melded the beliefs of the warring groups and concluded that Jesus was fully human, fully divine and one being. Hence we have a paradoxical christology, that Jesus is both man and God simultaneously. This ultimately leads to the doctrine of the trinity. They called it a mystery. You are not supposed to understand it.
The mistake Christians make is trying to explain this mystery with analogy and then wonder why their analogies invariably fall apart.
This is what happens when you try to make sense out of nonsense.

For years years, I’ve used the water analogy and the man analogy to try to describe the Trinity, that was very good Alan. I will never use those analogies anymore. Thank you for that. There is no human analogy that we can use or try to comprehend the Trinity because God is so much higher, so much higher than we are.

Hey Allen, a great presentation explaining the different heresies related to teaching about the Trinity! 👏 I've even seen the egg, water, and clover analogies used in different discipleship lessons/materials over the years. Usually they will also explain that the illustration doesn't work if pressed to the limit. What we need to do with these illustrations is emphasize that they don't prove the Trinity or show how it is, rather they only demonstrate in a basic way that it is possible to have unity and plurality together at the same time. Another one that we have also seen (and used to explain unity/plurality at the same time) is the math formula of "1x1x1=1". But again, we always need to stress that these are just ways of explaining unity (one God) with plurality (three Persons) but not"proof" of the Trinity. Keep up the good work and

Thankful for this. I wanted to teach on the trinity with our prek kids and my children’s ministry director said to use the egg analogy. I had already heard previous teachings on how this isn’t helpful because we reduce the trinity to something so simple when it’s not. I ended up doing the teaching but now moving forward I think it’s better to just read scripture and trust that God will lead and guide those kids by His word.
It’s Blasphemy to call the Godhead, trinity. Trinity is a man made term that is false and a heresy. Stick with the words of the Bible and don’t add to it or change it to suit the philosophies of man. Pray about it so you will be taught the Truth. False Doctrines are flooding this world and God warned us not to be deceived. We should pray, fast and counsel with God, personally, on everything so we will know with a certainty what’s true and what’s false. We should also not lean unto our own understanding.

Thank you for explaining how the analogies you mentioned are not accurate. For a long time I used the water analogy but learned recently why that is wrong. I like how you explained it so I am more clear about why that and the other analogies are wrong. Is there a more accurate analogy?

John 20:17 Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”
The point of an analogy is to make a hard-to-understand concept a little less abstract (in the case of Trinity, it's to present that the very idea of a three-in-one God is not as nonsensical as the critics like to say it is, and that some aspect of diverse unity can be found even in the created world), and just about ANY analogy will break down if you take the comparison too far.

I’m definitely glad I watched this video. The clover analogy and the man analogy came to my mind all on their own. I’d never heard anyone use them before but watching this video I’m guessing other people have used them. But Im glad I watched this video before I used these analogies when talking with other people about the Trinity.

Thank you for another video full of blessings! I’m a Sunday school youth teacher now, I’m 31 years of age. I never presented this to the youth, but I do admit and I ask God for the forgiveness of how I fell under the 5th example. What would be the best way to explain the Trinity of God? I ask for myself and for the youth I’ve been given the responsibility of teaching.

These analogies are meant to get a lost person to understand the trinity. A lost person will not understand the Bible so they need something to get a grasp. I find no attempt at heresy when explaining this to someone.
