I fully agree! What I find frightening is the audacity of playing 'Desire' as an opening to a live gig! Gutsy or what?? Smiths percussion is far less complicated than others who have played alongside her, but I think it works really well. Wish I'd been at this gig!!! Really excellent stuff! She's gorgeous too!!

I have seen Hiromi, 3 times live, and also with Stanley Clarke. The energy in the room when she plays, is palpable. Definitely plays with passion, along with being technically proficient.

With the greats of the 20th century all now sadly gone... is there anyone alive today, other than Hiromi, who can claim the mantle of "the leader and visionary"? There are many great piano players, but every note she plays just electrifies me in a way that no-one else can do.
When Martha Argerich tells you "Dear Hiromi, you are absolutely great. Extraordinary in every way", you know you have earned a very high place in music history. OMG !!!! Hiromi, well deserved. I am sure many many people me included share Martha's opinion.

@@ridermak4111 Simon Phillips has never played with Journey though. Deen Castronovo replaced Steve Smith after Journey replaced Stever Perry with Steve Augeri. When Deen was fired from the band Omar Hakim took the drum chair for a Canadian tour in 2015 which I was lucky enough to see. After that Steve Smith came back for a few years and after that Deen returned until the present day.
This awoke me from my slumbers when it randomly started playing on youtube. The brilliant piano playing made me sit up and take notice. What an extraordinary talent indeed. Not just incredibly agile fingering, also such delicacy of touch, impeccable timing, and what stamina! Her music is in her soul. Both are beautiful.
What is so amazing is that there are so many thumbs down. Its hard to believe that you listened to what I've listen to. I guess there'll always be negativity in this world. Amazing musicians.
It may be to do with that first track and the cartoony keyboard chorus. But if they've listened to that, thumbsed down and left it's their loss. Sometimes I wish the the other two were lower in the mix but that's a production problem I see a lot, like the camera edit being a crowd shot when someone is soloing.

It is simply not possible for a human being to play the piano this way. Or at least I might have said so, and I had seen some jazz pianists play in my day, until this treatment of "I've Got Rhythm." WOW. Not only rhythm, but the lady has some chops on her, and a genius for improvisation which places her in some pretty venerable company at the ivories: Petrucciani, Peterson, Corea, so many more, virtuosi all, and here is this tiny little gal showing them all how it is done, and making it look easy. Also gotta say her sound is a lot more suited for A Jackson and his six-string bass, which I actually found almost annoying and out of place when he played with Michel Petrucciani and Steve Gadd. Not to take anything away from that incredible lineup either, but this is the jazz trio unleashed like I had never seen before: thoroughly grounded in tradition and history and yet kicking down boundaries like so many dominos, the way jazz is supposed to keep right on doing. This is what happens when an old jazz fan drops out of society, moves out in the country and becomes a hermit for ten years: a guy doesn't realize that jazz is alive and well and still stirring up audiences like no other performing arts can. Thank goodness for RUclips, the old jazz lover's best friend ever.

Hiromi is good at technicality, but simply not very talented melodically. it is good music for background listening and for the audio rig testing, but, despite all of energy accommodated in to her songs, it's kinda boring at the same time. she tries to compensate not deep melodiousness by speed of technics.

They have a fantastic amount of talent there and these recent years they have been cultivated and presented. Nothing to do with this scene as yet but I would like to see the little goddess Kanade Sato play with Hiromi in 2021. That could be an explosive mixture.
This is one of Hiromi's best performances....her playing is even more free and technical than usual...much more varied improvisation within her standard repertoire...and great camerawork....Bookmark this one and revisit the full length...
Worry not, while it's probably one of the most well recorded (sound and video quality), I think in terms of playing, many like me favour her older, perhaps more candid days when she played with Tony Grey and Martin Valihora.( For instance, see ruclips.net/video/Qgpw75x3QhU/видео.html and around those years ). yeah, steve is a more subtle drummer, way more skilled if u ask me i think its a softer person in rl also i recommend the japanese drummer though, she's the best drummer of the world

This Trio is best with Steve Smith.. Simon Phillips is an excellent drummer it's just that Steve is a master jazz drummer and I feel like he's able to connect with Hiromi more.. Absoutely incredible!! She is THEE best musician in the world!!
I bought her debut album about 15 years ago, and was impressed with her musicianship (both musicality and virtuosity), thinking that another talented pianist had emerged. But, I was wrong … well, sort of. “Another talented pianist” now seems to be understatement. As many comments on her vids say, she has become among the greatest jazz pianists of all time, or perhaps even the very best already. With no sheet music or charts, she just improvises like crazy whether with a rhythm section or on her own. Back in the 70’s, I admired Keith Jarrett's solo piano performances, but sometimes found them a bit pedantic or self-indulgent or even boring. But not so at all with Hiromi - her solo performances are always innovative, melodic and enchanting. Hiromi already showed her versatility on her 1st album, and I liked it. But versatile musicians often fail to establish their own sound and end up being just one of them. Well, again it’s not the case with Hiromi. While retaining her versatility, she has successfully developed her own “Hiromi” sound, which is so recognizable. In my view, Hiromi may well be the jazz pianist of the century. And she is still exploring and developing …. Damn!

From that, I thought that maybe you were unfamiliar with the history of jazz piano players. There's a long line preceding her, going back nearly 100 yrs. Then there's the issue of "best." That is subjective. I accept that she's you're favorite all time jazz pianist but there's no best anyone or anything, there's only who or what we like. Is that relevant enough?
Noting that the ‘best’ is really difficult to find in music, Hiromi is magical and she is my favourite. I’m coming from metal, blues and fusion so my knowledge about pianists is not very deep. Hiromi catches me and takes me with her every tim. And AJ is unbelievable, too!
I've clicked through so many videos, through so many incredible, weird ambient landscapes... I feel like I'm going on a train trip, seeing a succession of crazy, never-before-seen scenes from history, important, weird musics through the window as I pass.. there's so much to explore. So many places to alight and dwell in the ambiences that are on offer. This stop, in particular, is brilliant 💖

Thank goodness Hiromi doesn't let the comment section dictate who is or isn't a proper drummer for her. I wouldn't have gotten to see her incredible, unbeatable trio with the incredible Simon. People who are deep into one particular genre, are often, sadly, pretty closed minded when it comes to musicians that are not bound by their old school expectations. I'm so glad to be completely unconcerned with genres and focused instead on just the beauty of music, with the criteria that if it sounds good, it is good. So far, every single line up I've heard Hiromi with, has sounded fantastic. I consider her one of the great musical geniuses of the present, and her judgement about who to hire, unlike her "the rock drummer doesn't sound jazz enough" fans, impeccable.

She is incredible wow! One thing is for sure, she has good taste in drummers Steve Smith here on this video and usually Simon Phillips who kills it on her stuff ! and we can't leave out the one and only Anthony jackson laying in down on bass . bravo!!!
Wow... the whole trio sounds revamped. Not only because of a substituted drummer and his new, refreshing feel on each of the tunes, but also because both Hiromi and Anthony have greatly evolved in their playing. Words cannot describe how amazing this is.
I like his feel as well, it feels like he's more hooked in with his percussion work. He provides a perfect rhythmic platform at the head and just gets more and more detailed with delightful fills and subtle but complicated playing.
Hiromi is the only pianist that I feel is carrying and even evolving Chick Corea’s legacy. My favorite musician alive today. One of those that come a few times in one’s lifetime.

I've been waiting for 50 years to find someone I could love as much or more than Dizzy Gillespie. Hiromi has delivered my waiting. Evolution of Art Forms take time. Hiromi could not come after Dizzy Gillespie until certain things happened in the world. When Dizzy did his first two decades many things happened. the first Jet Aircraft, the Diesel locomotives took over from the Steam Locomotives, the first space ships, the very first missions to Mars. Now after 50 more years enough new stuff has happened. There has been Train Systems built that travel 300 miles per hour. We are on the cusp of new Electric Automobile Technology. There has been so many missions to Mars that the Scientists say, we know the surface of Mars better than we know the Earth's surface. We have discovered at least ten thousand Extrasolar Planets. The World became ready for the wonderful Hiromi.

OOh, I also noticed another great example. Starting at 48:22 to about 49:02 or so. I mean really like any heady parts on piano show that independency, but these parts kinda make it more obvious to a nooby listener like myself. I won't speak for you, but as a musician I know that I don't really listen to ENOUGH piano based music. I mean I do, but Hiromi is probably the most piano thick music I listen to other than Herbie Hancock
Had the pleasure of meeting Steve Smith when he appeared in Wilkes Barre, about 10 years ago....at the time I was smittened by the fact that he was at one time with Journey....he became such an incredibly talented jazz drummer in the following years, and continuing to present....the guy is great....love Hiromi as well.
He was a schooled Fusion and Jazz drummer coming out of Berklee. He was playing with Jean Luc Ponty, then Montrose, then while Ronnie Montrose was opening for Journey, Aynsley Dunbar and Journey parted ways and Steve stepped in. After Journey he played a lot of varied gigs and then formed Vital Information. He has never stopped learning and is one of the best drummers on Earth today
Speaking from the perspective of an older guy, nobody played like this when I started bass in the fifties. I like it, it carries the listener away and that's what good music does. I guess I got hooked when I first heard "Desert on the Moon" a few years back.

Even the deepest places in the world oceans are measurable but not HIROMI!!!! Only Japan can deliver this kinds of people.... and the whole trio is well matched and come together soooo nicely!!! But I think the only thing which keeps these people together and playing so well is geneus Hiromi!!!!!
Hiromi, not only do you excel in composing such exhilarating jazz but you also have an uncanny knack of selecting the perfect personnel to complete your trio! Big fan of AJ & SS myself. Such a thrill to see musicians so into their craft and so in sync with each other. An absorbing and enthralling performance - bravo!

Only three things to say: 1) FYI, I have been disappointed when she rarely seemed to play older album material (except a few crowd pleasers like "Champion" & "Return of"), but I recognized the final two numbers here, they are off her first album (2003), & in looking back at the liner notes I had forgotten Anthony Jackson played on a few tracks on that album, including "Dancando" & "Joy"; 2) I knew she would be a superstar when I saw her on her first tour in 2003, but I never guessed I'd see her starring in the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games! 3) I am over the moon & on cloud nine that I will see her Friday night in New York City, 2nd show at Sony Hall, reserved VIP seating, because once she became such a big star she doesn't do so many shows in the US, & I haven't seen her in person since 2012; 4) [Okay, okay, I said three, but one extra little story...] at 2008 jazz festival, "Beyond Standard" had just come out, & I wanted a copy to listen to before the show; online I saw the Japan release had a bonus DVD, so I ordered it & it arrived the day before the show; when I was getting it signed by the band after the show, I handed it to Tony Grey, he looked at it & asked, "Hey, is this the Japan release with the DVD? Damn! We don't even have that yet!" I was floored (& pretty impressed with myself, as a matter of fact still insufferably smug about it to this day...wouldn't you be?).
She is a great pianist with a sense of improvisation. Her style is a mixture of a bit of Chick Correa, Keith Jarrett and Herbie Hancock. Great performance of the trio!

This is so cool! I'm not a jazz person (I'm not hating it, but I wouldn't just listen to it on my own), but I loved this so much! It's beautiful and I'm really amazed at how talented and passionate these people are.

This Trio is best with Steve Smith.. Simon Phillips is an excellent drummer it's just that Steve is a master jazz drummer and I feel like he's able to connect with Hiromi more.. Absoutely incredible!! She is THEE best musician in the world!!
I just discovered Hiromi asking Chat GPT about some japanese jazz artist that have classical music influences and it recommended me her. perfect!
I bought her debut album about 15 years ago, and was impressed with her musicianship (both musicality and virtuosity), thinking that another talented pianist had emerged.
But, I was wrong … well, sort of. “Another talented pianist” now seems to be understatement. As many comments on her vids say, she has become among the greatest jazz pianists of all time, or perhaps even the very best already.
With no sheet music or charts, she just improvises like crazy whether with a rhythm section or on her own. Back in the 70’s, I admired Keith Jarrett's solo piano performances, but sometimes found them a bit pedantic or self-indulgent or even boring. But not so at all with Hiromi - her solo performances are always innovative, melodic and enchanting.
Hiromi already showed her versatility on her 1st album, and I liked it. But versatile musicians often fail to establish their own sound and end up being just one of them. Well, again it’s not the case with Hiromi. While retaining her versatility, she has successfully developed her own “Hiromi” sound, which is so recognizable.
In my view, Hiromi may well be the jazz pianist of the century. And she is still exploring and developing …. Damn!

From that, I thought that maybe you were unfamiliar with the history of jazz piano players. There's a long line preceding her, going back nearly 100 yrs. Then there's the issue of "best." That is subjective. I accept that she's you're favorite all time jazz pianist but there's no best anyone or anything, there's only who or what we like. Is that relevant enough?
Noting that the ‘best’ is really difficult to find in music, Hiromi is magical and she is my favourite. I’m coming from metal, blues and fusion so my knowledge about pianists is not very deep. Hiromi catches me and takes me with her every tim. And AJ is unbelievable, too!
I'm so amazed that these musicians can perform with this much enegery for such an extended period of time.
I have high quality speakers here and guys, the bass sounds great! I love how he mixes the pick and the fingers. Great great sound.

Thank goodness Hiromi doesn't let the comment section dictate who is or isn't a proper drummer for her. I wouldn't have gotten to see her incredible, unbeatable trio with the incredible Simon. People who are deep into one particular genre, are often, sadly, pretty closed minded when it comes to musicians that are not bound by their old school expectations.
I'm so glad to be completely unconcerned with genres and focused instead on just the beauty of music, with the criteria that if it sounds good, it is good. So far, every single line up I've heard Hiromi with, has sounded fantastic. I consider her one of the great musical geniuses of the present, and her judgement about who to hire, unlike her "the rock drummer doesn't sound jazz enough" fans, impeccable.
I just discovered this band. How are her fingers not on fire? Wow!

She is incredible wow! One thing is for sure, she has good taste in drummers Steve Smith here on this video and usually Simon Phillips who kills it on her stuff ! and we can't leave out the one and only Anthony jackson laying in down on bass . bravo!!!

Wow... the whole trio sounds revamped. Not only because of a substituted drummer and his new, refreshing feel on each of the tunes, but also because both Hiromi and Anthony have greatly evolved in their playing. Words cannot describe how amazing this is.

Simon Philips sounds better on the drum imo
I like his feel as well, it feels like he's more hooked in with his percussion work. He provides a perfect rhythmic platform at the head and just gets more and more detailed with delightful fills and subtle but complicated playing.

I've been waiting for 50 years to find someone I could love as much or more than Dizzy Gillespie. Hiromi has delivered my waiting. Evolution of Art Forms take time. Hiromi could not come after Dizzy Gillespie until certain things happened in the world. When Dizzy did his first two decades many things happened. the first Jet Aircraft, the Diesel locomotives took over from the Steam Locomotives, the first space ships, the very first missions to Mars. Now after 50 more years enough new stuff has happened. There has been Train Systems built that travel 300 miles per hour. We are on the cusp of new Electric Automobile Technology. There has been so many missions to Mars that the Scientists say, we know the surface of Mars better than we know the Earth's surface. We have discovered at least ten thousand Extrasolar Planets. The World became ready for the wonderful Hiromi.

I mean really like any heady parts on piano show that independency, but these parts kinda make it more obvious to a nooby listener like myself.
I won't speak for you, but as a musician I know that I don't really listen to ENOUGH piano based music. I mean I do, but Hiromi is probably the most piano thick music I listen to other than Herbie Hancock

Had the pleasure of meeting Steve Smith when he appeared in Wilkes Barre, about 10 years ago....at the time I was smittened by the fact that he was at one time with Journey....he became such an incredibly talented jazz drummer in the following years, and continuing to present....the guy is great....love Hiromi as well.
He was a schooled Fusion and Jazz drummer coming out of Berklee. He was playing with Jean Luc Ponty, then Montrose, then while Ronnie Montrose was opening for Journey, Aynsley Dunbar and Journey parted ways and Steve stepped in. After Journey he played a lot of varied gigs and then formed Vital Information. He has never stopped learning and is one of the best drummers on Earth today

Speaking from the perspective of an older guy, nobody played like this when I started bass in the fifties. I like it, it carries the listener away and that's what good music does. I guess I got hooked when I first heard "Desert on the Moon" a few years back.
In the 50's there was Bud Powell, Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum and others. They didn't play LIKE this but they played as well.

One must preserve her fingerprints off piano keys and keep them for each performance and perhaps make an exhibition of HIROMI FINGERS KEY PRINTS .... just like almost everybody in Japan she is diabolical at what she does and this skill and knowledge has no limits and no depth just like her culture - Japanese culture has no depth and no limits ... it's unmeasurable .....!!!!!!
Even the deepest places in the world oceans are measurable but not HIROMI!!!! Only Japan can deliver this kinds of people.... and the whole trio is well matched and come together soooo nicely!!! But I think the only thing which keeps these people together and playing so well is geneus Hiromi!!!!!

Only three things to say: 1) FYI, I have been disappointed when she rarely seemed to play older album material (except a few crowd pleasers like "Champion" & "Return of"), but I recognized the final two numbers here, they are off her first album (2003), & in looking back at the liner notes I had forgotten Anthony Jackson played on a few tracks on that album, including "Dancando" & "Joy"; 2) I knew she would be a superstar when I saw her on her first tour in 2003, but I never guessed I'd see her starring in the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games! 3) I am over the moon & on cloud nine that I will see her Friday night in New York City, 2nd show at Sony Hall, reserved VIP seating, because once she became such a big star she doesn't do so many shows in the US, & I haven't seen her in person since 2012; 4) [Okay, okay, I said three, but one extra little story...] at 2008 jazz festival, "Beyond Standard" had just come out, & I wanted a copy to listen to before the show; online I saw the Japan release had a bonus DVD, so I ordered it & it arrived the day before the show; when I was getting it signed by the band after the show, I handed it to Tony Grey, he looked at it & asked, "Hey, is this the Japan release with the DVD? Damn! We don't even have that yet!" I was floored (& pretty impressed with myself, as a matter of fact still insufferably smug about it to this day...wouldn't you be?).
She is a great pianist with a sense of improvisation. Her style is a mixture of a bit of Chick Correa, Keith Jarrett and Herbie Hancock. Great performance of the trio!
