Water Level Controls Sensor Probe - The Boiling Point

  • On this episode of The Boiling Point Jude Wolf will discuss the advantages of probe type water level controls over the float type. He will also share the various ways the probe type water level controls can be mounted externally to boilers and some of the recommendations he suggests to keep your probe type water level control working efficiently.
    Tip:
    Do you know the proper length of your probe? You should remove the probe type water level control during your open and close. Use sand paper to clean off any rust build up. Measure the length of your probe and use a sharpie to document the length on the outside of the boiler for the next time you need to replace it.

    We have 3 cleaver brooks package boilers in our facility and we typically Blow down the Water columns every day however we only blowdown and test the auxilary low water cut off on Sundays when there is no production going on in the plant and we also test our other safety devices at this time .Is this adequate enough ?

      This sounds like you guys are doing fine but I would make sure to run it by your water chemical guy as he is going to have the best plan for you in regards to blow down. No blow down plan will be the same as there are just so many variables. Hopefully that helps. Thanks for watching!

      We just had a class taught by Honeywell and the extremely knowledgeable gentleman that is on the board told use that the code requires it once a year. But I have seen our AHJ require a evaporation test every 6 months. I always blew the bottom and the columns down everyday and did the slow bleed test and pop off test every year. I also had 3 CB boilers. two of them where 750 hp water tube. I bought the exact length probe from the factory, mainly because of liability. Also the pipe threads for the probes that I had were not 3/8" NPT They were 3/8" Dry Fit type. The ground was the pipe thread with nothing on it.

      @@wareboilers Hi I work with restaurant kettles ,and I wonder why I have no continuity between ground and the low water level probe, yet I have enough water in the jacket to operate the equipment. Can you explain me how the ground to probe circuit works?

    Water Level Control:Thank you for the video(s). I look forward to watching more. I'm still leaning. But, I have some thoughts and questions.1) Using the existing probe to establish the correct length of a replacement probe might not be best. What if the existing probe is the wrong length? Things happen. Some goof ball might have installed the wrong length. Perhaps one should confirm the correct length with the boiler's manual or parts book. Too much trouble? Some might agree with that. As important as this device is, I would want confirmation.2) Regarding the probe's function, mention was made of "operating limit circuit" and the "high water alarm". I would think one probe can not control both, low water cutoff and high water alarm. Is that correct?When is a "high water alarm" used? Seems like that would be for a steam boiler. I know you would not want water pushed into a steam engine cylinder.
    3) I am trying to restore a 1947 Cyclotherm Steam Generator. I think your video helped me identify the probe I was wondering about. It appears my boiler only one. I suppose it would be the low water cut off. I like the idea of a high water alarm too. Things fail. If a feed pump did not shut off you could be in trouble.
    4) One more question, regarding the low water cutoff. This one might seem like a no brainer but I never heard what it cuts off. This must cut of oil or gas fuel or perhaps electricity in the case of an electric" boiler. Guess it would not cut off solid fuel unless there were a stoker involved Thanks for all,Rb's
