    // ABOUT THIS VIDEO
    In this woodworking project, I'm designing and building a custom cabinet for a record player. This project features lots of angled joints and seems complex, but it really isn't, it just has a lot of steps and requires a lot of going back and forth to get the job done.

    I really love the idea of a parallelogram for record storage. Records naturally wanna lean to one side or another anyway. I think it works quite well. Awesome design.

    Such amazing work. I have my first table saw coming in at the end of the week and got a handheld router for christmas. I found your channeling looking for something to store my records in. This really blew me away. Your such a great artsits. I hope one day to be as good as you. Also thank you for helping us see we all have fears in doing new things.

      Thanks Cris. I used General Finishes Arm-R-Seal on this one. The record player is pretty cool. I think I had just googled "minimalist record player" and found this company in Boston. I picked the green b/c I thought it would go nice with any color wood. But yeah, definitely an eye catching device to have :-)

    A lot of the woodworking videos on you tube always come across as problem free efficient and smooth running. We all know in reality when we try to reproduce the projects we see there is a lot of learning that goes along with trying new things and a certain challenges create difficulties. I really appreciate your openness to talk about things like skill limitations and mistakes and aspects that are good enough. I think you have made some incredibly beautiful pieces and I really enjoy your videos. Thank you.

  • @dstarr3
    @dstarr3 7 лет назад +16

    Well, y'know, the thing about the direction of the cabinet is that a right lean is just much more aesthetically pleasing. It may not be as functional in this application, but while a left-leaning cabinet would improve the function, the form would have a much different effect. It's like in film or photography, if you have objects moving across the frame from left to right, it feels very natural, whereas objects moving from right to left create tension, unease, suspense. This is mostly to do with the direction we read our written language, as these "rules" of composition are reversed in regions where they read right to left. But that all said, a right-leaning cabinet definitely elicits a different response from a person versus a left-leaning cabinet, and I feel like the response from a right-leaning cabinet is the one you'd actually want in your house.

    • @Foureyes.Furniture
      @Foureyes.Furniture  7 лет назад +4

      Dave...it's funny, somebody else just asked about this. They were wondering if it could have to do with being right/left handed. I had never thought about it, but said this comes more natural to me because of the way we read (as you stated) and I also used side-scrolling video games as an example...with are overwhelmingly designed to move from left to right.

    • @dstarr3
      @dstarr3 7 лет назад +1

      Yeah, exactly, video games is another medium that's heavily left-to-right-oriented, largely because of the reading direction of the regions games were developed in. It's surprising just how much impact that has on a culture.
