When I lived in New Hampshire, I wore moccasins exclusively, even in light snow. I just used bear oil and rubbed it in. Just recently, I made a thick paste made of 50/50 beeswax and hog fat. My first intention was to make a paste for my bows and steel tools, but might try it out on my moccasins.
Great video Ryan, you always get me going on a project or two after watching your videos.

Let me tell you rain and snow works. I just learned to live with wet feet . I wear these mocs. Alll the time. I live in Louisiana it stays wet here. Iam a hard core longhunter . I put this stuff to the test. It worked great. I used fixing wax in the past it was ok but still ended up with wet feet before 9am. Great product. Thanks for sharing. God bless. 👍
Any boot cream and oil/grease that would work well on, say, Red Wings would do. Leather is leather is leather. That first sealent is very similar to Huberd's Shoe Grease, which works well. Neatsfoot oil and beeswax (with or without pine pitch) is classic.
would you have any quantities / ratio for the neatsfoot oil and beeswax and pine mixture? would definitively try!!!
I’ve always had great success with Sno-seal.
Finally, a new video!
sry, I have been crazy busy lately, but I promise I will have lots of future awesome content coming in the next few months!
what about using dandelion latex to make rubber for a sole?
Or permeating the leather with the latex?
Glad to see you back great video
Well that's going to help me travel really far this winter with my awesome new mukluks from Northern Ontario to South America!! :) (Will probably take me a couple years on bike and horse and walk haha)
Yes! A new video!
sry, I have been crazy busy lately and havent posted in a while, but I promise I will have lots of future awesome content coming in the next few months!
I'm curious though. How do you learn how to flintknap and build bows and arrows? We're you self taught?
Yup pretty much. Like anyone could imagine, I picked up various tips and tricks along the way from different people but for the most part I am a "find my own way" kinda person.
@@huntprimitive9918 That's pretty amazing. I've seen your videos and I was immediately inspired by your work and lifestyle. Is there any advice you can give for people who want to learn how to hunt wild game?
@@zaratekarate2037 thanks very much. There are 2 real options. learn from trial and error by getting out and trying and seeing what works and what doesn't. If you want to really jump fast in advancement, look at some of the new HuntPrimitive classes we are putting on at www.huntprimitive.com
If I used beef tallow and beeswax instead of bear grease, would that work as well?
You’re the man
Have you thought about putting in a layer of wool into the 1st pair of kids that you took the soles off of??? That may help with the leaking, wool may stop up the holes but still allow you to feel the earth!!!
Thanks Ryan! Very excited to try the rain and snow on my moccasins. I just wanted to ask, where's the buffalo hunt video?
The Bison experience will come out this Summer most likely. It is a very large production and we still have a bunch of filming to do on it at Texas A&M in about a month. It is actively in the post production process now tho
Was curious about the middle pair of mocs, the ones with the brown leather sole. I archery hunt in Oregon and hunt in timber, with occasional rock scrabble. Similar but not quite as extreme as your Idaho elk hunt. Do you think the middle pair would hold up well enough. I know you can't guarantee anything, just curious on your thoughts. They are a nice pair. I normally use Minnetonka moccasin boots that have held up well. They just have a rubber sole that I'm not quite liking. Thanks
I have an in-house pair of moccasins which I love. But I do use them to go inside and out temporarily. Normally just to let the dogs out for checking steaks on the grill. I don’t necessarily wanna apply a oil or wax due to the fact I don’t want residue rubbing off inside the house on carpeting. Do you have any recommendations on techniques that might help reduce water intake without adding grease/oil that would rub off on carpeting and such?
Thanks for your time.
I used three layers on my soles.
Nice work on these videos. Quick question: How do you keep from getting eaten alive by mosquitoes and ticks? During turkey season I've always used permethrin clothing treatment, and it's awesome. But turkeys can't smell. In fall, I'm fortunate that I've mainly lived in northern climates where bugs are not an issue during deer season. But now I've moved farther south. What's your strategy on this? Thanks!
I'm a gun hunter, but in my opinion wind is the most important factor, permethrin is probably not going to be the factor that gives you away

HuntPrimitive k thanks
I cripple layers mine.
I live in florida, if I did have to cross a creek or walk through a patch of swamp/marshland, how bad would that be on a leather shoe like these? Would it ruin the shoe immediately? I would love to hunt and camp in a totally traditional way with traditional gear, including shoes, but if water destroys them then I don't think it would be worth it.
I get them soaked all the time. they dry out and it doesn't hurt them at all.
Yep bar grease all my boots
What ratio of bear grease and beeswax do you use
