Hawkeye 47 that is all korean's hope wherever they living. As korean, i hope north are open their border. But as a soldier, we need to be ready for any sitation.
I am a ROK Marine and I have used this rifle. Actually, K1 was created to fill the need for shorter barrel, compact version of firearm compared to M16A1 that was widely being used in Korea back then. Essentially, it was made as a SMG (and accidentally ahead of the time by keeping 5.56 on SMG instead of typical 9mm). It is widely used in armored, engineers, recon, SpecOps, etc MOS that requires working in tight space or in stealth. There has been many voices in SpecOp and Recon community in Korea about need for a new rifle. They issued us mod kits to put rails and foregrip and all that accessory but now transitioning to a whole new rifle. They are currently issuing newly built K2C (Carbine). From my experience, I liked my K2 better than K1. Both are very reliable. I never had my K2 fail on me even after being under water, mud, desert sand, snow, etc. And it is dead accurate. K1 suffers a bit in accuracy compared to K2 but it is still a great SMG that can even be put in carbine category and compete with carbines. Problem I had was the less stable buttstock thingy on K1. But a lot of guys in recon and special forces replace the default buttstock with modern retractable ones. Fun fact : you can use K1 upper on K2 lower vice versa. It works perfectly fine.
80-90s early version of k1 smg has trumpet shaped muzzle, and when it fires, flame was so huge that blind the user.invisible to target......those problems are solved..
K6 is the HMG. K4 is the automatic grenade launcher. :) I was issued a K1 when I was an officer in the ROK Marine Corps. It was decent, but the weapon was very old.
I am Korean. As a Korean, I am glad that Dangsan reviewed the gun. It would be nice to review a lot of Korean guns, and thank you very much for reviewing the Korean guns.
My father was fond of (Career LAPD retired Captain) collecting military firearms during the 70s, 80s and stopped around the time of the ban in California in 1989 (California was first then the feds followed a few years later). He bought this model (K1) and about a week later he bought a K2 (1988). He purchased both at a store in Long Beach California called GEMCO. It was like a Walmart type store but you had to be a member. The rifles now resides in Arizona in my brother's safes.
Centreline charging always made sense to me, It's very sealed up because it doesn't need a giant slot, no messing around about which hand to use, nothing to get in the way on the side of the gun, no reciprocating parts (I know that is either good or bad depending on perspective). All that said I have zero time on ARs, so for those that do, what is it about the side charger that you prefer/what am I missing about the central handle?
James Healy My criticisms of it are mainly that it's weird to charge without dismounting from the shoulder and, though there are replacement handles that remove this issue, the handle is awful. It's uncomfortable, hard to grip, and small. The small part especially contributes to the problem of being unable to charge without dismounting the rifle, because it's nearly impossible in my experience to get a good grip on just one side of it, but it's very awkward to get the hand around both sides without pulling the gun away. I know that can be resolved by an aftermarket handle, but in its stock form it sucks. It's just a terribly unergonomic charging handle for the gun that everyone claims is the ultimate ergonomic tacti-cool rifle. Why bother with super ergonomic grips and safeties and stocks and what have you if you still have to deal with a charging system that, in use, feels more like a badly designed bolt action than a modern rifle? I have not tried it, but from looks alone I'd honestly prefer the original charging system, where there was a handle on top that looked like a second trigger (like a FAMAS if I remember right). The issue then is that you may not be able to get a gloved finger in the guard to charge it in very cold weather, which I believe is why it was changed in military service. But, ergonomically, that isn't a bad method in my opinion. However, that also necessitates some structure on the top of the rifle, which means your sights will be higher, the gun effectively taller, and it'll be weird to mount modern optics on it (which I believe is why the carry handle/charger guard has largely been left off of modern AR variants). However, considering I'm right handed as are the vast majority of the people I know, I don't mind one bit having a nice big knobby handle on the right side of the rifle. If I was left handed or designing something for military use where left handers would have to use it, I'd probably be happier to deal with the drawbacks of the AR charging handle, but as a right handed person who finds the charging of nearly every other military rifle perfectly comfortable, the AR's annoys me.
Laird Cummings Interesting. It probably comes from having shot mostly older rifles (I've honestly shot much more black powder than smokeless), but the right hand just feels to me like the natural hand for charging.
AgamemnonTWC As a righty who isn't a soldier, I much prefer charging with my non-trigger hand like on HKs and FALs. But for soldiers and people moving with the weapon at the ready keeping your fore-grip hand supporting the fotward weight of the weapon is much more realistic than the mechanically disadvanteged trigger hand.
Man, something about the Daewoos always feels really pleasant. They always seem to strike just the right balance of elements. Would love to get my hands on a couple. Thanks Ian!
Hey Ian great video. I'm stationed in Korea and work with ROK military. Interesting fact is the first K1s had M3 style muzzle cones then swapped to CAR-15 style muzzle boosters later. They tend to only issue them to squad leaders, MPs and vehicle crews. I always wondered why the weapon isn't imported again without the wire stock and with the original upper as a pistol.
S&T is looking for sales to keep production running so much to even sell to the Iraqi military. When these were imported in the 80s they were 300USD I could see them being imported as pistols today for around 700USD. The startup costs are already paid for unlike other more exotic guns like the SCAR. There is a market for people wanting to buy guns that aren't AK or ARs.
It's not that they aren't just a gun that isn't an AR, the K1 and K2 have good reputations as dependable guns and one of the few guns from East Asia Americans can own with the ban on Norinco guns and Japan not selling sporter versions of their military small arms such as the Type 84. I doubt these guns wouldn't move seeing how well CZ Brens and other alternative guns can't even stay on shelves.
Great video! Tho i have to point out a few errors. Unlike the K-2, the K1A1 cannot adjust ranges. What Ian is showing you there is the dial for zeroing the sights left and right. Also, the aperature sight with the big hole is for night-time shooting. Or at least thats what they tell you its for in the korean military
Fantastic rifle. I owned one of these in the 1980's. Bought it new for $350.00 from a shop in Texas. I sold it a couple of years later. Wish I never did that. I've been looking for another one ever since.......

I saw one of these at a gun show in Houston. I wanted to get one so I returned on Sunday to learn that they only had two left. I asked them how they sold them so fast and they told me that HPD bought almost all their stock. Still have mine to this day. It is a badass gun.
I was stationed in Korea twice. I always assumed these rifles used an ak style piston. Learned something new. Fun fact, officers in Korea still use the 1911 instead of the m9.
when i was in army, many soliders wants k1a more than k2. because k1a is lighter than k2. but because of k1's butt plate, k1a's accurancy is lower than k2. so i like k2 more than k1a
You can do a drive-by in a Daewoo car with a Daewoo gun with music playing on a Daewoo stereo. I suppose you could even wear a Daewoo tee shirt and a Daewoo hat.
Daewoo also makes a line of retro style kitchen appliances, and an all in one breakfast maker that's basically just a toaster oven with a hot plate on top and a coffee maker on the side. I always figured that if I ever buy a Daewoo, it'll probably be that one.
This looks like so much fun, i wish we had a stateside version I would love to see more 5.56 platorms become popular, maybe their prices could be as low as the ARs
I'm from the UK, and I noticed something weird when Daewoo was advertising in the 90s. They were trying to become a household name, and because most people weren't familiar with them at the time, they used to have a pronunciation guide in their adverts. I used to buy Guns & Ammo magazine, and I noticed that the pronunciation guide was different in the US than it was in the UK. In the UK, it would say 'Daewoo (day-oo), but in the US, it would say 'Daewoo (day-woo). I always wondered why they wanted Americans to pronounce the 'w', but wanted it to be silent for British people. I'm sure their marketing department had their reasons.
I used both K1 and K2 when I was serving in the military. The biggest advantage of K1 was that it was light when marching. I was a infantryman, so I used to shoot and march a lot. I borrowed K2 during the shooting training only. K2's hit rate was much better, and it was only possible to get 7 days off if all the targets were hit.
It’s kind of spooky that I was recommended this video today. I just saw the Mexican AIC police getting lunch in the oxxo store while I was there, and one of them had a K1A1, and I remember thinking, what the hell is that? Now I know!
I love forgotten weapons. There is a sense of professionalism in Ian's knowledge about the subject matter that far outweighs other channels about guns. Anyone familiar with his background? Is he a historian?
Man, I miss Daewoo. First thing I bought from them was a VCR, didn't last as long as the JVC I replaced it with. Second thing I got that was designed by Daewoo was my 2013 Chevrolet Captiva sportwagon ( fleet sales only ). That was a very useful little crossover. The Captiva started life as the Saturn 'Vue', and was mashed together with the Holden 'Captiva', then updated by Daewoo for GM to use to fill fleet sales contracts for a Vue sized crossover/ small suv.
Legend has it, when the city's burning, the shops will still be standing and there will be Koreans on the roofs defending them. This must be their weapon of choice.
The 1 to 5 on the rear sight doesn't indicate range adjustment from 100 to 500 meters. Those are just references in the windage drum and it appears to be a copy from the M16/M16A1 as does the 5 notch front sight. The apertures appear to be somewhat copied from the low light sight system used on the M16/M16A1 which would have used a 4 notch front sight post with tritium vial visible on 2 sides.
K stands for weapon series designed and made in Republic of Korea. K-1 is the first South Korean made SMG. After that Dawoo introduced various K series such as K-2(Standard Rifle for ROK Armed Forces), K-3 (Machinegun inspired from FN Minimi),K-7( 9mm silenced submachinegun)etc.
@@sowhat2127I hope not lol. It's still a "low-ish" round count, around 7-8000. I still think it probably needs to be looked at, just in case. Thanks for the heads up man!!!

I got to fire one of these last weekend. Really nice little rifle, except the hand guard was so wobbly it felt like it was barely hanging on. Was shooting better with this than most ARs with irons or with red dots that I’ve used. Really snappy little rifle
tawm Now they produce enhanced K-2 with fully machined parts and nice anodized finish but safety lever still annoys soldiers. Haha but I wouldn’t mind have one. The gun shoots half MOA with PMC ammos.
It was under martial law for a long time after the war "ended". Just the modern history of that country is really interesting. From the Japanese occupation on. I am not even getting into events that happened when Indians were the only inhabitants of the Americas. They even invented a sort of "rocket launcher" that used black powder, bamboo tubes, and evil looking metal tips fired out of a wooden mlrs looking thing.
The k1 bcg is about the same weight as an ar15 bcg. they made the carrier thicker to avoid reliability issues that come up from just cutting down an ar15 carrier to remove the buffer tube necessity.
Out of curiosity Ian, have you had a chance to look at the Swedish AK5 (licensed copy of the FN FNC if I recall manufactured by Bofors) I would love to see you do a video on that if the opportunity were to ever arise.
Arphalia he's already done a FN FNC video a few years ago, its pretty much the same gun with the triggerguard being the only big difference. The only way to get your hands on an AK5 is through the Swedish military, as far as I know they haven't surplused any of them or sold them abroad, he might handle one at a museum tho. Shooting one is pretty much not possible, I suspect Ian is the wrong kind of PR as far as the Swedish armed forced is concerned. I've only fired them because my brother was in the army.
Prefer the K2 The K2 is an awesome amalgamation of designs. Apparently they are doing a modernisation of the K2 with some updated furniture. Cool gun. That being said this gun is interesting and would be reliable.
We had a Daewoo Nexia once, back when they tried to break into the UK car market..... If this weapon is anything like the cars, bits will start dropping off within a month and it'll spend more time in for repairs than it ever does in use!! In fact, that bolt tab for the recoil rails looks exceedingly delicate...
A couple of minor errors. At 5:35 you state the the "rear sight is adjustable for ranges from 100 to 500". Actually, the "wheel" is to adjust windage. At 8:40 you state that the expanding gas "pushes the bolt forward". Actual, the expanding gas only pushes the bolt carrier back. That movement rotates the bolt until it is ulocked which allows it and the bolt carrier to move to the rear
Yes it does. Back in the good old day we could buy mil-spec semi-auto here in Kali. I believe this was one of the wholesale FFL distributors names for Old Sac Armory (local Retail FFL) on K Street (no longer located there)
One of the very few guns I have first hand experience with on this channel, as this was the gun issued to my unit back when I was doing my mandatory service. HQs "administration" troops had these, and practiced with them. I kinda preferred it over the K2 rifle I trained with at boot camp.
First time I ever saw one was when I was on TDY from Misawa AB to Daegu AB. I saw the ROKAF MP’s armed with these rifles and I really had no idea what they were until went online a looked them up. Over all cool cool rifle. Hope to own one day and as always great video Ian really enjoyed what you bring to the firearms table.
I had a Max II for a while. It went through recoil spring guide assemblies because the heat treat of the rod (or spring guide... or both) was not done correctly. The part that drives the op-rod galled the rod to the point that it would seize. It wasn't too big a deal when a replacement assembly was only $27. Now, it will cost you $100+, if you can find them at all.

Josh Samuelson the lionheart lh9 is a commercial version of their current pistol.
GunFun ZS learned 2 new things today then. Maybe it's just the reserves that use the old .45 then as I remember seeing them at military exercises.
I heard we had some 1911 for ye-bi gun(reserve force, like national guard? of korea).but most of forces use k5 pistol this days.
Thanks for the first hand and first hand-ish input.
1911 looks pretty and works well, thier is no reason why they wouldn't want to use it
Thank you very much!
I am looking forward to K1A1's review for a long time!
"You just got killed by a Daewoo Lanos"

Haha i was waiting for this

when i was in army, many soliders wants k1a more than k2. because k1a is lighter than k2. but because of k1's butt plate, k1a's accurancy is lower than k2. so i like k2 more than k1a
You can do a drive-by in a Daewoo car with a Daewoo gun with music playing on a Daewoo stereo. I suppose you could even wear a Daewoo tee shirt and a Daewoo hat.
And you can make a stock trading account at Mirae Assest Daewoo.
+Daewoo apartment
Best rifle I ever owned. Wish I still had it.
I used this gun in the Korean army and it is very safe. This gun is a gun made for special combat
Daewoo also makes a line of retro style kitchen appliances, and an all in one breakfast maker that's basically just a toaster oven with a hot plate on top and a coffee maker on the side. I always figured that if I ever buy a Daewoo, it'll probably be that one.
This looks like so much fun, i wish we had a stateside version
I would love to see more 5.56 platorms become popular, maybe their prices could be as low as the ARs
i was in the Korean army until last year (south Korea, of course). and i trained with K1A.
i'm glad to see that gun on youtube.
Now I know!
That cleaning kit and hanguard setup are straight off the FAL. Neat.
I love this! It should bee good in the mud test but still has the springs inside, perfect!
Damm i use it when i was medic.
Everyone envied me when training time because it was much lighter than the K2 rifle.
I used this whenever I worked with the ROK Army while stationed in Korea, it’s a badass little thing that’s lightweight and easily handleable
Yep, I meant windage and goofed.
When I was in the korean army, I was taught that the larger aperture for the iron sight was for the night since your pupil expands in the dark
I own one of these. Fun to shoot and reliable as hell. Had it a long time and zero problems.
Another way of fun. you can put Daewoo MAX 2 upper receiver on it. It works. How do I know? cuz I have done it when I was in Korean millitary
@@sowhat2127 a helluva rifle right? I've had zero issues with mine and it's probably 30 yrs old. A ton of fun to shoot and very accurate.
@@lproctor55 ZERO issue with a rifle aged 30 years.,.umm that could be the problem of the barrel expansion.
@@sowhat2127I hope not lol. It's still a "low-ish" round count, around 7-8000. I still think it probably needs to be looked at, just in case. Thanks for the heads up man!!!
The Ar15 pistol before they were they were cool.
The K-1&2 both work quite well for their intended purpose. Both are reliable accurate and user freindly
The K2... I used to have one of those.. back in the day..
Great simple design. one can certainly see the AR18 influence! Good video.
I know that bag on the side is probably to catch brass, but I prefer to imagine that its there to keep the gun warm and toasty...
Tater tots
This is one of the firearms on my wish list and has been for years.
A review of Thompson variants would've been perfect for Valentine's Day.
My first grown-up job was doing PC tech support for a (now-long-defunct) subsidiary of Daewoo Telecom. I can only hope that Daewoo Precision Industries Ltd. has higher quality control standards. :)
Koreans are one-step away from inventing m416 in the 60’s. If they use the AR-18 piston and the AR-15 bolt.
so true!!
Same with the taiwanese t65.
This is on my gun wishlist, I’ve wanted this thing for so long
a daewoo always reminds me of Dugan Ashley!!
I got to fire one of these last weekend. Really nice little rifle, except the hand guard was so wobbly it felt like it was barely hanging on. Was shooting better with this than most ARs with irons or with red dots that I’ve used. Really snappy little rifle
The Korean word for conglomerates like Daewoo is 財閥 (jaebol), similar to Japan's Zaibatsu like Mitsubishi and such.
wow so many memories...
i used the K-2 and m203 and m16 when i was in the army :)
brings lots of memories
getting major FAL vibes from it
All it needs is a sexy charging handle. But very Cold War.
Both the K1 and K2 borrowed some aesthetics from the FNC, namely the handguard, so you're not too far off.
Got a rare opportunity to shoot a K2 in South Korea in the 80's when I as stationed there. Very cool rifle.
Ian you're making me miss my Kimber-import DR-200 even though the finish was prone to scratches and the safety was annoying.
tawm Now they produce enhanced K-2 with fully machined parts and nice anodized finish but safety lever still annoys soldiers. Haha but I wouldn’t mind have one. The gun shoots half MOA with PMC ammos.
Sold a few of these in the 90's, almost bought one myself. Got good feedback
Huh, i'd always imagine that South koreas weapons were food and freedom.
Don't forget K-Pop
They have a modern military force. Modeled closely on the US structure. Put it this way I would not ever want to fight a ROK Marine.
Take that freedom with a grain of salt: SK had a brutal military dictatorship of its own well into the 1980's.
GOTEM!
Brings back memories of living in Arizona. Man, they loved the Woo over there.
Korea has had good engineers for some time.
and photographers too.. if you checkout some of the videos and pictures their military releases, the quality is unbelievable.
I like it. Thanks for sharing it with us Ian :)
i used it when i was rok army's apc driver...

I'm happy to see this gun be done. My dad actually owns this gun himself. To see it in one of your videos is cool.
my dad too . Wait a minute, we re brother
I hope they make guns better than they make cars.
Dog of Wisdom daewoo cars suck so bad
Prefer the K2
The K2 is an awesome amalgamation of designs.
Apparently they are doing a modernisation of the K2 with some updated furniture.
Cool gun.
That being said this gun is interesting and would be reliable.
This video is long over daewoo, but just in time to represent the hosting country of the Winter Olympics.
That pun.
Sarrienne Cousland trust me the guns are way better
Does this mean that there will be a video about the K2 coming up?
Yeah, it only tool 3 years!
Daewoo! Drive-bys with effortless grace, and plenty of room in the back for the kids.
The Russian equivalent would be the AKSU-74.
AKS-74U is correct designation
Евгений Макаров Ofcourse, my mistake.
Ian just pronounced it incorrect.
7:38 you can pull out screw for handgaurd with bolt handle; it fits.
That rifle looks like it needs a bit of lubrication. Internals looked as dry as a chalk board.
Probably because it hasn't been used. And cleaned for auction
Now this is verry interesting. I did not know daewoo made both a DI and a long stroke gas piston version of this gun, verry cool!!!
Daewoo are the godess of rifles. Still trying to get my hands on the k2!
Did that say it was imported by a company in Sacramento?
Yes it does. Back in the good old day we could buy mil-spec semi-auto here in Kali. I believe this was one of the wholesale FFL distributors names for Old Sac Armory (local Retail FFL) on K Street (no longer located there)
I mean consider that Armalite started up in a machine shop on Santa Monica Blvd, Hollywood. Crazy how things have changed
Great video Ian. I loved this and K-2 when I used to play Combat Arms many years ago. I am also glad to see you doing a video every other day.
Do a review on Daewoo TVs and microwaves
Including shooting them with a Daewoo rifle
One of the very few guns I have first hand experience with on this channel, as this was the gun issued to my unit back when I was doing my mandatory service. HQs "administration" troops had these, and practiced with them. I kinda preferred it over the K2 rifle I trained with at boot camp.
Good lord Ian, It is 4am. Why are you uploading Videos right now? Furthermore, why am I watching said videos?
Ian no sleep
Lmao, It's merely 8pm in Korea.
Zashra its 2 pm in my country xD
I always thought it's for us Central Europeans to enjoy Forgotte Weapons after lunch?
4 am? Not where I live
Holy shit, I never imagined I’d see Daewoo branding on anything other than slightly defunct little hatchbacks. Rare to see even them
Come on Ian! We all know the storage compartment in the handle is for Skittles! Smh.
That take down latch is beautiful, i wish ARs had that!
K1을 여기서 보다니 신기하네요.
Why? Because it is not a forgotten weapon?
jaedashson Right. It's still active in duty.

When I was in Korea, a ROK gate guard had a K1 that had safe, semi, full auto,
AND three round burst.
Thanks for reviewing it! For fricks sake, when will the Airsoft Industry finally make an Airsoft version of this gun 😭😭😭 ?! I’ve been looking for years.
I wish Brandon herrera would do a vid on this while using pineapple express quotes about Daewoo lol 😂 But I really appreciate this fantastic dive into such a different type gun. 👍
