I'm a guy just needing a simple and straightforward tutorial. Thank you for giving me just that. Respect for your wanting to share your knowledge with the world.
Thank you, I am in Bristol Virginia and I have 2 purple heart plants that I bought on sale. They are very happy and growing but the cold weather is coming so I am going to take them out of the pots and put them in the ground because I am gone for most of the winter and I am sure they will die if they are not watered for a month. Thanks for letting me know so much about this plant. I appreciate you sharing what you know.
@@jamee_maree Yes. We have plenty of freezing temperatures. I am on well water and have to protect that water source from freezing in the coldest part of the year. They aren't the first plants to poke out of the ground but they do indeed make their way out in late spring.
Excellent video, thank you! My Purple Heart (hanging) has gotten leggy. I’ve read it’s time to prune. Do you have any tips and trick to pruning? I’ve read trim it down to 6”. Do you agree?
Hi there! I think the 6" idea is a good one! Purple heart is the easiest, most tolerant plant for cutting/regrowing and rooting, so you probably can't go wrong no matter what you decide 😊
Excellent info thank you! I’ll be snapping some of mine off before it hits 40° to grow in inside. Should the water container be clear or a dark solid color? My thinking is roots grow underground in the dark 🤷🏻♀️ and do you just add water or should the water container be cleaned out and freshwater
Sorry, I almost missed seeing this message. I grow mine in glass jars usually, like sauce jars I clean out. I usually dump out the water and add fresh weekly, but I am not even sure that's necessary. They just root so easily, I don't think they're fussy. Good luck!! 💜
All the foliage will die back anyway, so cutting it back works, or letting it die then cutting also works. I don't over-mulch mine, in southern NC, and it comes back beautifully.
Awesome video! Picked up a PH for $5 at a farmers market last summer. Brought them indoors over the winter and started some shoot plantings. Now I have lots! I will be planting them everywhere this season! I love plants like this. I also love castor and cannas like you have but I am curious about yours. Are these new or just dwarf varieties? I'd love to have some of both that aren't 8' tall! I am in zone 6.
Hi there! I know, I also love plants like the PH that are SOOO easy to propagate! That's awesome about all your new babies! ☺ Yes, you can actually get dwarf varieties of cannas! It's so wonderful to have height options with those beauties. Thanks so much for your sweet message!
Thank you for the tips. My PH cutting is 6 months old now. I put it in a water jar and it has slowly produced 3 new leaves during the winter and a tiny little new branch starting out on the stem. The strange thing is it doesn't have any roots coming out yet. What should I do?
After 6 months it doesn't have roots in the water? That doesn't sound right at all! That's actually the opposite of my experience. My cuttings usually root in water in a few weeks. I'm not fussy at all about where I snip the stems, either, I just break them off and plop into water. Has you water jar gotten light? And do you change out water consistently? If yes to both of those, I would try to get another cutting if you can, or buy another plant purposely to propagate more. This really blows my mind. So sorry.
@@mycarolinagarden It's really surprising it didn't show any roots. I changed the water 2, 3 times a week. I'm thinking of cutting off the base (some algae has formed a couple of times) about half an inch, hoping some roots will come out. Like starting out anew. Do you think it will kill the plant?
I’m planning to bring plants inside that can’t handle our winters - this one included. The main thing I can’t figure out is how to keep my cats from getting it. I will definitely hang it but as we know, they will prob try to use it as a toy lol. Or I can leave it in my indoor greenhouse but same prob there bc they are able to get inside thru the bottom of the sheeting I hung. It didn’t even cross my mind at the time 🤦🏼♀️ Anyone have suggestions? Or DO NOTs ha
I'm so sorry for my delayed response - for some reason I didn't see this message until now. Shoot, that's quite a dilemma, because you definitely don't want your cats getting to it. I have a cat, but she doesn't care about my plants. I happen to keep most of my plants inside my bathtub to overwinter if I bring them inside. Wish I had a good suggestion for you!
I just wanted to add that I’m in the process of trimming mine down after watching this video from about four feet of a mess to six inches and I am SO ITCHY RIGHT NOW and my skin is burning. Maybe wear gloves? Or maybe it’s just me. 😅 Thank you for the video, though!
Wow thanks, never knew Purple Heart was a succulent. Thank you
Well done!
Thank you! ☺
Purple hearts are one of my favorites, so easy to grow. Love your channel!.
Thank you so much for your kind words! Happy gardening! 😊

Great advice. Thanks for making the specific note about this being toxic to both humans and animals.

Love your plants! I’m in 7B so we connect !
That's awesome! So we'll have lots of similarities!
I grow these and wandering Jew in a glass vase of water and pumice stone. It does great!
Sounds beautiful! Yes I appreciate how easy this is to grow 😊
Thanks I love all your tips and purple hearts.🌺
That's great, I'm so glad to hear it. Thanks for reaching out!
I live in Kentucky at 6B and mine has came back as a perennial. I have only had it planted outside for a couple of years.
That's awesome! Anything that wants to be perennial is a win in my book! 😊
Oh wow!!! I’m in 6a (western IL) so that is awesome to hear!!! I assume you guys get the harsh freezing and snow that we do?

do I need to cut down this (in the ground) outside plant and mulch it for the winter, or leave it as is?

I don't think that will kill the plant, and I would do the same thing. 🤞 it works!!

Oh no!!! I know it has toxicity to it, but I haven't heard of anyone near me having that problem. UGH, so sorry to hear that!!! Take care!
Are the leaves medicine?
I don't know anything about that unfortunately.
I found a gang of These at my apartment pool grabbed a few and toook a pic on Google and now I’m here thanks for the video
Haha, love it. Great to hear the back story 😀
