My name is Nicole Roggeman. I have two major passions in lilfe; one is creating artwork on canvases, while the other is creating art in my landscape. Working in my yard and flower gardens is hard on the body at times, but eases my soul like nothing else.
This channel is dedicated to growing plants and flowers, with a strong focus on my residential greenhouse in Southeastern North Carolina, as well as beautifying my little piece of Earth.

Brutal Summer Weather Stressing Plants | August in My Carolina Garden
August in My Carolina Garden is very different than May. Now is when you see brutal summer weather stressing plants, flowers, and their growing environments. We have to deal with black spot, powdery mildew, things getting tired and taking breaks, weeds and more! This is a video exploring my front yard, and August in My Carolina Garden, located in coastal North Carolina.

@@mildredagustin279 thank you 😊
I would love to have moss growing on almost everything! Its so pretty. I think your garden is still looking really pretty, especially in this heat. I had to laugh at your comment about people driving by complementing your garden. When that happens to me I'm like you should see my backyard! I pretty much have ignored my front yard, I just love working in the backyard.
Yes!!!! So much of my focus is in the back yard, I am right with you! 😂 Also agree about the moss - I love it! 😍
This is so cool!
@drivingdaily582 thank you!! 😁
I live in Houston and I really felt everything you said in the opening of this video. I have also been a little sad about the state of some of my plants, today I added a few vincas and a new hardy hibiscus to make me feel better about it 😂
@@laurabrown9938 yesss, I love it that you added some new things to make you feel better!! 😁💚 This part of the year is tough to get through with our extreme weather. I'll feel even better once hurricane season ends ❤️
Hello Nicole. Our temperature here in southern Il has been in high 90's to 100's. Some of my plants are not so good either. I love your garden. Especially the cannas and banana trees. Keep gardening and sharing. Thanks for early August tour. See ya!!
@lajoyceneafus3021 oh gosh, hearing about your temps makes me realize there's no relief anywhere. I guess there's some comfort in knowing we're not alone though. Thanks so much for this message! See ya! 😁
Hi Nicole, Your garden doesn’t look tired to me. I think we need some days to be cloudy and give the plants a break. It’s been a very hot on the east coast this summer ☀️☀️☀️

I love these updates, it is nice to know we all go through the ‘slump’ with some of these plants. I guess they all deserve a little break. 😂
@SaltwaterMom3 yeah, we're so definitely in the same boat with the slump. How's the weather by you? Hopefully you get some nice rain, but not too much! 💚
@@mycarolinagarden we are finally getting some rain and a little wind. Overnight tornado watch that will now continue through the day. Praying for those on the west coast where Debby made landfall. Hopefully it mellows out by the time it reaches you and leaves you with some good rain. Stay safe!
@@SaltwaterMom3 you stay safe as well! Praying for no tornadoes!!
did you plant cosmos? the ferny looking thing you called a weed looks like cosmos.
@@denisea3036 I did!! Do they get big like that? So I should leave it alone even though it looks wonky? 🤪

So Beautiful!!! ❤ You have quite a selection of plants. Oh and the last time I watched your video you mentioned the Oleander. I thought it was so beautiful I had to go research it. Found out it is very poisonous and it's not even sold in some states. I would still like to have one though...it would be such a pretty addition to any garden.

The weed may be a cosmo if you planted seeds. I thought mine was a weed so I pulled them out Oops
Oh my gosh, really!? Cosmos get big like that? Yes, those were among the seeds I planted. Now I'm laughing at myself 😅💚 Thank you!!!
I enjoy watching you, so glad you show the bad & ugly along with the good...makes most of us know we are not in the sinking boat alone. But your garden is still beautiful! Just a note, the pineapple statue you just put in is a southern "WELCOME" signature at least that's what I was told.
Thank you so much for this kind message!! Heck no, you're definitely not in the sinking boat alone. Oh really, about the pineapple!! That's cool, I hadn't heard that before. Love it! 🍍
Hi Nicole 🌺 . Every thing looks amazing and you can add blue and white plumbago to the island outside , the view is going to be amazing . Have a wonderful day ..🌺🌻🌺
Thank you for your suggestion and sweet message! I am not familiar with Plumbago and looked it up - it's so beautiful! Have a great evening!
I love that you suggested this! It thrives in my area too, gorgeous plant!
your garden still looks beautiful. everything here in ga is stressing because of this heat. but they will be back at it in no time. i think we are stressed as much because we work so hard to keep it looking good. thank you for sharing your garden with us. try to stay cool and be safe.
Haha, yes, we are definitely stressed with taking care of them, for sure. You're right though, they will be back looking good in no time, once our oppressive weather season passes. In October we can be looking at our beautiful gardens thriving while people in colder climates are starting to prep for Winter. Have a great evening!
@@mycarolinagardentrue, we can’t complain about that! 😊
Wow you got so huge banana plants so nice garden I also grow some hibiscus and it is perennial for me and it has huge flowers too thanks for sharing. I am in Durham :)
Oh nice, you're not too far from me. Maybe our soil would be different, but our climate is pretty much the same. I love hibiscus! 😃🌺
Here in Wilmington ,NC it is hard to get out in the garden as often as I should ,due to the humidity and heat! Rain makes it difficult to keep up with cutting the grass too! Thank you for your content!
Boy oh boy do I agree with that! The heat and humidity here has been awful! And please, half the time I can't even show my grass because it isn't mowed 😂 You're right, tough to stay on top of everything, we can only do what we can do.
So so beautiful
Awe, thank you! ☺️💕
Everything is looking wonderful, love seeing before and after photos!
Thank you! Yes, so interesting to see the changes! 😁
This is just breath taking beautiful garden! I am in south eastern costal NC. What do you give them to make them look so healthy?
Thank you so much for this sweet message! Funny you ask, because many other people did as well! 😅 I did a follow up video to this one talking about watering and fertilizing. I hope it helps! 💚
I wonder if the canas in the ditch did not do well because of the runoff of possible herbicides/fertilizers people use on their lawns and making their way into the ditch??
That's entirely possible! After I filmed this video, I moved half of the cannas out of there, but left some, and this year they seem to be stronger (bigger with more blooms). It'll be interesting too see if that trend continues. Thanks for your message!
Enjoyed you sharing your techniques in this video. Plant-tone seems pricy to spread all over your garden. I guess you feel like it really benefits the plants for the cost. I do like using liquid fertilizer for potted plants
Hi there! Oh boy, I feel like everything is pricey. I didn't think that fertilizer was bad, and really, I only bought 2 bags for the property. I would say yes, the benefits are worth the money. Have a nice evening!
@@mycarolinagarden that’s not bad only 2 bags & you are getting the results you have. Guess a little goes a long way. I also noticed you said you did not protect your banana stalks in winter. Wish I could do that. Even though I live in Pensacola FL zone 8b/9a if I don’t wrap my stalks with frost cloth we get a couple nights in the ‘mid 20s with wind I can lose them back to ground. Guess it’s just location relative to wind if it’s cold. Anyway yours are amazing
@wesleyhackney that's really interesting to hear about your bananas! You're so right, small things about location (wind, proximity to the coastline, etc) all make a difference. I haven't protected mine in the 5 years-ish I've had them, except with extra mulch over the roots. Anyway, stay safe with the weather!

@@SouthCarolinaTransPlant thank you so very much! I just started following you on Instagram and look forward to seeing your garden in your posts!! Have a great night, and I appreciate your messages!
Thank you so much for this video! First thing I did was pause and go follow you on IG. I will NOT cut my banana trees back low this year no matter how they look LOL. I'm in heavy clay soil, but most of my bananas I actually went a little weird and planted them in my raised beds. But I wanted height and with them being raised already they should look massive after a couple of years. I'm lining the area around the raised beds with Louisiana Iris (love the foliage, don't care if they ever bloom) elephant ears and hardy hibiscus. With any luck I can stick some ferns in there without them getting too much sun. I'm hoping to completely hide the raised beds from view because mine are really kinda ugly IMO. Your tropical garden style has been such an inspiration :) I'm so glad I found your channel.
@sharonhart1232 thank you for this sweet message! I appreciate it so much! Yes, I made the mistake of cutting my bananas to the ground at first, then the next year I ran a test, cutting some low and others high, what a difference!! Your plans for around your raised beds sound great!! You should get some really good growth with those plant selections (not to mention beautiful vibe!) Have a great weekend!!
Hi Nicole, thank you for sharing your helpful recommendations to help our plants survive in our zones. I look seeing the blank canvas your yard once was! A lot if hard work over the years has paid off in your tropical garden🌴🪴👒🪴

Very informative but the music makes it hard to hear and pay attention to you
@@racheallewis2437 thank you for your feedback!
Thanks for sharing the info! I think all the time and love you’ve invested in your garden is the reason has grown so successfully for you. All the days of hand watering, you really know your garden and it shows. Your soil is wonderful, very similar to mine. I also amend if needed. The builder added a lot of sand, so up near the house, I definitely had to add some topsoil with compost.
@SaltwaterMom3 thank you, I appreciate this message very much! Growing in sandy soil was a bit of a learning curve for me, but in a lot of ways, I'd take it over the hard clay lots of people struggle with. You have the added challenge of even more brutal sun and temps. Whew!! Here's to keeping going!! 💪🌞
@@mycarolinagarden that’s the truth! When we were in Greenville, NC, I planted three Emerald Green Arborvitae in the backyard and digging into clay was something I had never experienced. I had never seen soil that basically turned to rock when it dried out. I’ll take the sandy soil every day of the week! 😂

@dianasmith2876 yes, the mini ones grow, but they are only ornamental
Very helpful info.
I have established plants but they are drying out and going to die.... I water a little every day... Full sun! What am I doing wrong???
Do they only look dry, or do you happen to see any mildew or black spots on them?
Oh, if I were closer, I’d come by and get some of your blanket flowers! You’re an inspiration to me. Learning to garden in the cement hard clay of Kentucky (7b). Keep up the hot work!
@@gaydoyle810 awe, I appreciate your message! Hard clay, boo!! Good luck with the learning and growing! It's a labor of love, for sure.
do you just let the water drain into the soil or are you tipping the pot on its side to prevent the water and aphids from running back into the soil?
Since my plant is so much bigger than the pot, the bugs and water were washed away and didn't go in the pot.
Just stumbled across your channel. The garden looks very nice. I too garden here in North Carolina. The rain has definitely made the fire ants a little worse than usual. I’m never out in. The garden without socks and boots. Have you looked at Rhino greenhouses? More expensive than harbor freight, but one that should hold up to the weather.
