    I'm not an A/C guy, but I love to watch your videos for the problem solving. Yesterday, I used what I learned to figure out what was wrong with one of our industrial A/C units a day after it was serviced. They replaced one of the two cooling fan motors, but wired it up backwards! The unit stopped pulling air through the condensor and instead just cycled it in with one fan and out with the other. I blocked the backwards fan grate with a piece of cardboard and our office immediately cooled off while we waited for them to come back. Even my maintenance guys were impressed! Thanks for helping me look like a hero!

    No tech worth his weight in salt will criticize you for cutting apart a tube sheet to fix a coil. I hacked a 20 year old condenser coil apart on a 15 ton Lennox once dead center of the coil to get the thing running. It literally has a gaping hole in the coil. The piece of shit is alive and the customer is happy.

  • @franksprecisionguesswork501

    Got a love that condenser repair. I’m sure it saved a bundle of dough for the customer. Reminds me of a similar repair job I did probably 40 years ago. It was heat exchanger for a big Gardner Denver air compressor. The oil to air cooler had a leaking tube. This was a monster radiator at least 300 lbs and had steel “tanks”. So after identifying the tube that was leaking, we cut a 2x2 hole on each tank to be able to reach in and braze up the ends of the leaking tube. Then welded up the holes. This saved the customer about $3000.00.
    I love watching you think through the problems and coming up with reasonable solutions.

    Fan setting on spray bottle can be used for pin holes that are forceful because if you basically mist the air that pin hole will push the mist. However it will be too forceful for the bubble to form over it. You can also spray it in the air to show forcefulness of flow for vents and fans. It can also show you the direction of the flow of the air to see if it is flowing smoothly. Just some old school tricks for you.

    Just watch out with the VFD since it might actually be ranging to higher frequencies than 60Hz so if you use a contactor directly and bypass the VFD you might need to check the gearing ratio between motor and fan. One point with the VFD is energy saving, but it can also be used to create higher airflow than normal to speed up cooling. Just check that first and also make sure that if it's there it's not trying to impose a too high rpm on the motor - maybe someone overrode that limit and that's why the fuses blew.

      Gearing ratio? Im just wondering, how? Isnt the vfd compressor just a scroll? If you are direct feeding 60hz 208 to 230v wouldnt it just run like a normal compressor? If the blower is also on a drive couldnt you just run it to match the compressor on like lets say high speed for cooling?

    11:12 Once I had a call to a customer that had a huge industrial drier for wood in a big room with piles of wood planks up to the roof and it was determined that there was a leak in it but 2 other firms before had not found the leak. The humidity in the room was 99% and I'm not kidding you there was a light fog in there and close to 110 F. The condenser, that I suspected beyond anything, was as big as if you unfold the both condensers on this, on the video, carrier unit and then put 3 on top on each other, then you know the size of that condenser it was insanely huger, not fine finned though but quite tight anyway. I shut of everything in the room and started to listen and after only 5 min I found the area where the leak. The other guys was old ppl that couldn't hear, I was young. The condenser was around 8 inch thick and the closest tube was several inch down a bit far and close to one end of the condenser. I needed to use a hacksaw to get even close and needed to cut away quite much. But I pinpointed the leak, typical corrosion, brazed it filled with gas and it worked perfectly and owner was very happy.

      The hissing was just the gas equalizing in the system after it was shut off

      It's simple. 16oz in a pound, so 0.1 lb is 1.6 oz, 0.2 lb is 3.2oz, etc.

    Nice video! Repairs like that are never pretty, but they ARE necessary. And you did a great job on it. If the coil ends up coming apart later, you can always have them buy a new coil later. I'm in need of a new micron guage, so while there's no way ill be able to afford one of those new fieldpiece ones ... maybe people will be selling their used blu-vac's now for less money.

      @89dhvac 3 года назад +1

      I like Fieldpiece, but bluvac is the only way to go for a micron gauge. Every company has their strong products. Fieldpiece for their current digital manifolds and wireless probes. Accutools(BluVac) for vacuum hoses and micron gauges. Testo for combustion analyzers. Fluke for meters. Etc.

    So can scrolls handle a liquid charge into the discharge line? If I don’t have a liquid line service port I add one cause I’m scared. But do I need to?

      I disagree no offense. Silver is expensive and a proper leak free joint is made by capillary attraction, in other words pulling the braze back into the socket of the fitting or swage. There is absolutely no reason to put some huge cap on the joint if you can braze properly. I try to make my braze joints look like solder joints. I hate joints with boogers all over them looks unprofessional no offense though everyone has different ways of doing it. As long as it doesn’t leak is the most important thing

      @@baitcasterdisaster8981 I completely agree with you nice looking silver braise her what we were taught in school and reading books and supposedly when done perfectly in a perfect world they would not leak.
      Even though I would like to believe my thorough heating and wicking action of making the silver braise follow my heat deep into the joint would do a perfect job and never leak.
      But unfortunately in the real world all the leaks from joints that I had to re-repair came from perfect looking brazing jobs. And the majority of them after years came from my seniors who told me about perfect looking brazing joints.
      So since I’m far from perfect I do not strive to have a perfect looking professional brazing joint I prefer no leaks at all under any possible circumstance.
      I will leave the perfect looking brazing to those perfect people
      I was always taught to take braze back apart to study your brazing skills and it’s something I have always done
      So every time I come across a leaking braze I immediately heat it up and take it apart. Every time finding patches of pure copper that have never received Silver. But they all have one thing in common they looked perfect on the outside

    If you get the final answer on why the VFD blew the fuses please let us know , I'm surprised because it's supposed to have an internal overload so I'd really like to know . Cheers mate 👍

    You didn't mention if you checked the rest of the units other locations for potential leaks, could be more than one or a larger leak somewhere else.

    24:41 I think I hear some hissing on the camera. Is that a leaky connection or somewhere new that sprung a leak maybe?

  • @jpp9876
    @jpp9876 3 года назад +1

    Such a large leak at that joint. Would that indicate they didn't have a complete braze at the joint? And wouldn't that joint need to be cleaned up a bit by removing the Male end of the joint? I'm used to doing plumbing no experiance with brazing. Also would that fix be better with a lower temp silver solder, considering the light guage copper on the coil?

    Chris, I'm not criticizing you one bit, I work with alot of sheetmetal and use the tin cutoff wheels to cut metal as thick as 10 gage steel, couldn't you have used your cutoff wheel to cut the dryer off @ the top and bottom of the filter dryer and then sweat off the flares in order to sweat the new dryer on and not release moisture back into the system by sweating the old dryer off.

    Just having a VFD on the evaporator fan seems like a bit of a half arsed (mainly US?) solution to me.
    No wonder people bypass them instead of replacing it!
    I appreciate the cost issues but here in the UK at least, variable speed compressors, and both condenser and evaporator fans are much more common.
    Unlimited range of speeds on all components!
    Sounds like VF is becoming more common over there though!
