I played Auto Modellista as a teenager at a friend's house, but it took about a decade before I remembered the title of the game. Thank you BlueTag for invoking fond memories of that time ❤❤
@@ShanerTheGrey To be honest, Auto Modellista is a fairly obscure title, especially among younger generations of gamers who didn't grow up playing on the PS2.
Auto Modelista is one of the most beautiful and interesting car games! Unique cell-shaded art style, tons and tons of customization, and so many scenic locations. I absolutely adore it and I'm glad you are making a video on it!

The Tommykaira ZZII is one of the prettiest and coolest supercars ever made. Like a Japanese McLaren F1 or Saleen S7. The ZZII wasn't at F1 level of performance, and unfortunately never left the prototype phase, but it is very cool.
Korea made a free MMORPG called SkidRush (DriftCity in U.S.) with art style ripped straight off of Auto Medellista. A bit grindy like most free MMORPGs, but pretty good storyline and beatable without microtransactions. It was my childhood and looking back, a one of a kind game. There are no CarPGs anymore.
I love Auto Modellista's style, as you said, It could have been made today and still hold up to standards. We need more games that deviate from realism.
I think racing games should only be sim realistic. Some kid in a bmw understeered off the mountain right in front on me trying to drive fast, I slid down the hill to see if he was ok, he was thankfully. I was just trying to keep a conversation going until fire and ems showed up. Anyway I asked he played any racing games and he with replied with Need for speed lol. There is actually a Wii game with a similar art style for the vehicles: GT Pro Series. It feels a bit more low budget then this, but the handling is pretty decent even with motion controls!

Could never find another copy until YEARS later after I bought myself a ps2 on Amazon. If our favorite beaver ever decides to do a video on it I'd be SO ecstatic for it to get some recognition in our current time lol.
Auto Modellista was a great game. One of the first games that allowed you to swap engines and add performance components that actually mattered and changed performance the way they would have in a real car. The cell shading style was a great design choice and made the speed you were going feel real. I think I still have this on my Xbx hard drive and I may just have to fire it up again.
Im so happy to see that you considered Muppets Race Mania after i recommended it in a comment on a previous video and that you seem to have enjoyed it after checking it out with how you want to do a video on it, ill be looking forward to whenever you eventually do a video on one of my favourite childhood racing games
"You Didn't Play" Half the planet knows this game. Also there are some key differences between the PlayStation and GameCube versions, with the PlayStation 2 versions lacking a couple of tracks and cars from the GameCube version, namely the dirt tracks. Also the handling was improved in the GameCube version
Thankfully I was in the "did play" group, loved it, the style was superb, shame the physics weren't quite up there, but a union of this and Enthusia would have been tip-top.
I beat the US version of Auto Modellista. Handling Physics are heavily focused on oversteer, but if you got a delicate finger and know when to slow down you can keep the car from getting too squirrley. The Toyota Sports 800 with a Supra 2JZ engine swap was very OP in this game (swaps were unlocked after finishing 1st place in every event in the story mode), even though you can't tune a engine swapped car much it was wicked fast at the start of a race and on any course with a long straight-away. Also, in Japan this version of the game was re-released as Auto Modellista: US-Tuned. Not sure if this was the same for the European version though.
I have the US version of the game on Xbox and the physics aren't the only problem, one of the secret cars is the Shelby Cobra and it's laughably OP to the point you can win every race with it. It has a top speed of over 220mph/355kph when fully upgraded and accelerates like mad, and it doesn't care if you're using slick tires during the rain because it'll still stop on a dime and make turns no problem.
I played the US version, it was my first contact. Yes, is kinda hard to steering, but if you be patient to build a tunning for your car, you can make a huuuge difference in the game. Even in mountain tracks
You know, its kinda funny because i didn't have so many troubles with the US version because i tuned the suspension of my car to induce much more understeer.
Not only did I play it, but I own it for PS2. There is one cool thing you can do with the old, tiny Toyota 600 I think it is called. You can put a big v8 engine in it or a big turbo v6. It make that tiny care ridiculously fast.
I was 17 when this game released, I loved it, it was overshadowed just under a year later though by NFS Underground, then Underground 2 a year later. Those were some great times :)
You reminded me it's been 20 years since I wished for a 3rd title adding Euro cars and perhaps more locations. For the handling, I would count as get use of driving without assists similar to a race car. Still, the best way to play is got both OG and US content added on Japanese edition-the game's main focus was about online and stylish anime style, and there's authentic Japanese license plates similar to Tokyo Extreme Racer did.
I remember playing this as a kid with the US version. I can vaguely remember the controls being weird but I just thought I was bad at the game. The customization of cars and garage kept me entertained, as thats what I remember the most about it. That and the sound track and graphics. Im glad this game isnt forgotten. Hopefully someone can modify the US version to have the controls of the EU version, so we can have the extra content + better controls.
There wasnt that many body kits back then. It was really cool to see the bodykits they added because they were all real bodykits from big all the big cool brands from japan. I still get giddy thinking about the RX-7 mazdaspeed body kit with the fog lights.
I have this game since a kid (EU version, obviously). This is the first review of it that makes it justice and says things like they are, and inclusively speaks about the differences between the US and EU versions. I still play the game from time to time because it runs super stable on emulators, and the GameCube version has better texture filtering than the PS2 version, making it a enhanced graphics version of sorts. Plus, the fact Dolphin can easily take HD texture mods makes the EU GameCube version the best of the all for me.
I tried the game when it was new in stores and I couldn't get into it. It was difficult seeing other games try to be realistic, but then this one was animated. I'd probably be able to play it now.
Played the four mentioned games at the beginning back on it's day and loved them despite being 3 of them only rentals. Maybe one day i'll get originals to my own collection of all the 4 (Midnight Club 3 is there, both editions).
Played this game many years ago on the gamecube, US version. I had no issues with the handling at all, maybe car setup has something to do with, but I remember loving this game.
I've discovered this game a few months ago and didn't know it have 3 versions. I've finished the Garage Mode in a US version and i simply loved the game (but always got the feeling that the handling on cars was a bit weird). Now i def want to try out the EU version of it.
Seeing the last part, well, guess now we just gotta wait for some blessed madlad to either port the US content to the european version, or fix the terrible physics of the US version, heh Nice video 👍
Idk How i didnt played this back when i had a PS2 Since i had ALL Burnout games for the PS2, Midnight club 3 Dub Edition, GT4, some NFS games and other racing games i dont remember (they were ALL Pirated games, this is How i had so much games)
i wish i could remember the full name but my buddy had a NHRA drag racing game on the ps2 that let you customize the engines like crazy, ever wonder what a 8 liter single cylinder does? only 400rpm with 8000ftbl of torque. crazy game.
I need to find someone who can help me mod the game cause I wanna see how to implement a physics engine closer to the original for the US release that still gives some drift capabilites as well as maybe more tracks and possibly an expanded campaign.
I played this game (in the US) when it was brand new. Never knew about the handling model change and would probably explain my poor experience trying to play it emulated now.
Surprisingly enough I find that the US version of Auto Modellista is more intriguing to play in large part thanks to the physics. The most common mistake I've seen people do is attempt to drive just like in any other racing game, where you steer the car to keep turning. With US tune, you'll need to slow down to the appropriate speed, then rotate the car towards the direction you wanna exit, then just keep it pointing there. You do not turn in the US version of Auto Modellista: the car turns for you and you tell it where it should be pointing. It's so unlike any racing game I've played, even including rally games where you'd expect this sort of behavior the most. Once you get that trick down, it'll be a real standout. JP/EU release tends to use a more conventional driving model where the car keeps turning as you as you keep adding steering input, but every single game does that. Give me the weird shit every single time. I'd recommend getting a feel for the physics on the oval then try expanding from there. Though sadly my general opinion of Auto Modellista is that it's the equivalent of one of those small rather nice novelty chocolates. The aesthetic and car feel are rather intriguing, but only enough to last like what, an hour or two before it runs out? There really isn't enough of it. Even tuning is a mess there. Because of Capcom's pretty weird design decisions you get racing slicks that are better on every single surface and any of the max speed gear ratios just end up being underwhelming compared to pure max acceleration due to how short the straightaways are.
I have no idea how many hours I have in this game when I had my ps2. It was literally the only thing I would play. I didn’t even know there were other versions. And to think I got used to the cars handling like they are on ice I can’t imagine what the other versions feel like . Im definitely gonna find myself a euro copy to play.
I had this game. I really wanted to love it. The concepts were pretty damn nice, the anime-style cell-shaded artwork was gorgeous, but... I really didn't enjoy the driving itself. It had so much potential, but failed to deliver exciting racing to me. I mean look at the clip at 3:31 on the video: 227km/h (141mph), and it looks and feels dreadfully slow. That kind of speed on roads where the walls are so close should feel terrifying and yet I felt bored playing it.
Ive thought for a long time that without the graphics no one would remember it. Its not a good game. Just shows how much we have all wanted a cell shaded racer and its still never happened
I only ever got this game as a demo so was very limited version... I completely forgot the name or never learnt it... I was like 6 but still remember the graphics and using I think it was the Suzuki cappuccino, good video and I’ll have to look into this now!
This game was one of many that threw its hat in the ring to compete and beat gran turismo at the time. Although they did well but couldn’t compete with gt 3 and eventually gt 4. Though only one that stay relevant and competitive with gran turismo is forza motorsports. I do wish capcom one day make a return to this game and make a new one for fun
More unique games: Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3 and Tokyo Xtreme Racer: Drift 2. These whole TXR series are Japanese weirdness and they dont actually have an ingame tutorial, its just that every tips and tutorials related to the game was written in poorly translated english from japanese and many games actually didnt ship with theser tutorials. Various things such as music choice (pure japanese anime style), what you thought was the ending is not the actual ending, the true ending is something else, some racers only challenge you IF you do certain things. I didnt know that there was tire wear in TXR3 as the game never tells you this, I thought only the engine overheated. TXR3 & TXR:D2 are the best of them and are my all time favourite obscure games. TXR is highway racing inspired by Wangan Midnight and TXR:Drift are Initial D inspired drift and rally racers.
This brings back memories, have to agree on the driving on ice feeling, aside from that had a blast playing Auto Modelista, highly recommend playing Tokyo Extreme Racer Zero
I rented this game so often, the store owner just straight up give me the game. Good times.
I did play it more than 10 years ago on my ps2, thought it was weird, traded it, now want it back.

seems they applied the rally physics to the road courses..such a shame
Idk How i didnt played this back when i had a PS2
Since i had ALL Burnout games for the PS2, Midnight club 3 Dub Edition, GT4, some NFS games and other racing games i dont remember (they were ALL Pirated games, this is How i had so much games)
Ah, I have this game! I love it dearly, used to play tons of Auto Modellista as a kid. I'm so glad you made this video!
i wish i could remember the full name but my buddy had a NHRA drag racing game on the ps2 that let you customize the engines like crazy, ever wonder what a 8 liter single cylinder does? only 400rpm with 8000ftbl of torque. crazy game.
1:09 idk why but the silence creeps me out
he's looking inside your soul
I love how it looks. It looks like a playable anime.
I need to find someone who can help me mod the game cause I wanna see how to implement a physics engine closer to the original for the US release that still gives some drift capabilites as well as maybe more tracks and possibly an expanded campaign.
I love this game. I spent countless hours drifting the corners of akagi hill and rokko hill
I played this game (in the US) when it was brand new. Never knew about the handling model change and would probably explain my poor experience trying to play it emulated now.
I’m glad I’m not the only person who remembers this game.
Not sure if he plays Japanese games, but there’s a game called c1 gran prix, it’s based on the Tokyo xtreme racer series
This artstyle reminds me of drift city, the mmorpg car game from the 2000’s
This game definitely stands out. There are some features that the game has that some other racing games don’t.
I have no idea how many hours I have in this game when I had my ps2. It was literally the only thing I would play. I didn’t even know there were other versions. And to think I got used to the cars handling like they are on ice I can’t imagine what the other versions feel like . Im definitely gonna find myself a euro copy to play.
my fav car game back in the day just love this game
i WAS PLAYING THIS ON AN EMULATOR MONTHS AGO. Art style is amazing.
The next video can you do midnight club 3 remix ?
dunno if it's gonna be the one next week, but it's definitely coming soon!
Still have Auto Modellista. I made a car based on Beyond the Grave, from Gun Grave.
IF you had a PS2 and you like cars? I'm sure you played Auto Modelista
The garage customizer reminds me of the the old PS2 WWE games
