- One of many obscure PS2 racing games is R: Racing Evolution - a simcade racing game by Namco who were previously known for the Ridge Racer series. Does it stand the test of time?

The one game that adds a thing that matters more than racing & story, the BOOBA
I love your videos
Booba = happyness
Suddenly, that one guy's spammy comment in Gran turismo videos putting Love Live characters and locations in makes more sense.
Srs also had Booba
Japanese devs.
More Booba = More Downforce
Those alternate Routes in the Rally Events were actually super cool, I don't think I've seen that in a game before.
Interesting game even without the cutscenes, that Camera is absolutely infuriating though.
That's the added ballast some racing series require lol
So: booba + no hair = perfect aero
@@LotsOfToubleUsuallySerious yup, Adrian Newey wasted his time studying Aerodynamics in University.
All he needed to do was read some Manga novels
@@kspectre21 source: trust me dood
@@LotsOfToubleUsuallySerious there is an actual study paper on the internet the aerodynamic properties of flat chests vs mega booba, the mega booba generated more vortices, and thus generated more downforce, as opposed to the flat wall generating more drag
The feeling of this game kind of reminds me of Ace Combat if it was a racing game.
Not surprising since Ace Combat is also from Namco.
YES THIS
Especially AC5 since cut scenes have same-ish feel
@@endjfcar Yup, my favorite Ace Combat game!
The cutscenes and the dialogues in the races are totally reminiscent from AC5.
@@endjfcar you know that Reiko Nagase, the icon of Ridge Racer is Kei's sister?

I'll see myself out....😊
And you quickly switch to porn, easier to explain... >_>
Srs moment
Play SRS.
Ok
I actually really liked the race where you are forced to finish 2nd. It's very rare for sports games to focus on the corruption and greed aspect of competition.
In an early story cutscene, Rena mentions that GVI was already being accused of fixing races long before she joined the team. The implications that this "client" bet AGAINST Rena winning that specific race at Suzuka and the pit chief ordering you to fall back and finish 2nd is damning proof of how GVI operates: The minute Rena proves her real talent and builds a reputation, the organization immediately abuses it to profit.
It's the kind of drama that's really genius because it affects both gameplay (A racing game telling the player to lose on purpose!?) and story (A large, wealthy sports organization engaging in illegal betting and shady practices is 110% realistic and believable).
I wouldn't mind a sequel, or at least another racing game that features the Ace Combat radio system and a similar "political" storyline that actually gives more to the racing than just getting 1st and winning all the time.
Oh yeah, I remember where I had this in the bag being first but I was so oblivious to the comms that took me many tries to finally understand the message to be in 2nd place.
R: Racing Evolution definitely should've had a sequel! It's a damn shame it never came to be.
Despite the *eye catching* cutscenes, this game is pretty enjoyable and deserves at least some remake or something (without all the booba things)
@@LotsOfToubleUsuallySerious You ordered Namco, Japanese game to not put booba? What the hell?!
I remember losing that race the 1st time around because I didn't understood the objective... I would love to get R:Racing Evolution on PS5 with updated everything.

That is a certified Initial D Extra Stage moment
I watched that shi when I was 11 😭 I got scared
2:38 That caught me off guard so bad xD
That S H O W E R C U T S C E N E tho

I LOVE IT
kei nagase is similar to reiko nagase, so it kinda makes sense
@@HimeSiffie its confirmed that they are sisters
Can Dustin play Ace conbat at some point?
both were made by Namco as well :P
*Race Combat
R Racing Evolution is feels like the combination of Ridge Racer (but simulator) and Ace Combat especially the voice chatter has .
That's because it is ridge racer
R Racing Evolution is a Ridge Racer spin off. It's meant to be less arcadey but it's still miles different Gran Turismo.
it is a ridge racer spinoff, contrary to what daddy namco want you to believe
Honestly it kinda feels like they wanted to test the waters with a story driven racing game (As Ridge Racer Type 4 did that stuff as one of the first). But at the same time wanted in on that sweet GT money. So rather then slap a story mode over RRV physics and cars, stuffed it into their GT clone. Was probably the better idea as they clearly didn't have the physics to be even a GT CLONE competitor, let alone stand next to GT. But the story and PLOT made the game memorable enough that it's still talked about. Certainly brought up more then RR64, which Gina shows up in the DS remake.
Rena's model strongly reminds me of Asuka Kazama of Tekken.
ofc the shower scene is the most replayed
Why wouldn’t it
@@midnight_mz129 damn this world is getting more and more horny people in it
I guess Namco DIDN'T had any rules for that game. That scene thought is pretty naughty
This game is actually pretty solid, and has a banging soundtrack, since it's made by the same guys that made Ridge Racer.
@@purwantiallan5089 and alot of those cars are just duplicates with different liveries and slight power and weight upgrades
Yeah fr,the Intro OST really stuck in my head for a while back then
There's a reason it's called R: Racing Evolution
What i can tell about this Namco Sim Arcade racing is basically Ace Combat in Racing games.
But instead of War Crimes and Fighter jet doing rad things (like flying trough the tunnel or flying a aircraft midair like a figget spinner) you get Cars and Boobas.
It's considered to be a spin-off title for Ridge Racer, but I can see some resemblance to Ace Combat.
Now i really want Eden to learn how to play Ace Combat and stream it (atleast between 4 - Zero)
@@M0rinkashi
Ridge Racer and Ace Combat are both set in the same universe, so I guess that makes sense.
The OSTs of this game are absolute bangers. Wish they'd make an actual sequel of this game similar to that of Ace Combat
I mean, it's by the Namco sound team who pretty much never miss. Even in Unbounded.
Lowkey I use some of these songs in my sets as a DJ. People come up to me askin where I pulled these out
The cars in the garage/showroom (whatever) look really good, but once you enter a race, the downgrade of the models be hitting hard.
Also, nice story mode ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Not to mention you can mess around with the pop up headlights of the Pantera, RX-7, Charger and the plate removal of the C5.R
@@elrinconcuriosodesally3528 Wow, didn't knew about that, very cool

The Xbox and GameCube versions are much, much better.
For Namco's first attempt with real world cars and tracks, I actually find it rather amazing. Even some of the cars Namco put in the game aren't available in other car games. I can't help but think that Namco can easily make a new generation version with latest cars and tracks.
one story driven racing game I’ve been meaning to play is Racing Lagoon, especially now that the full game has received a full fan translation
100% do it. That game is simply unlike anything else. Plus, the soundtrack is AWESOME.
There's also Ridge Racer Type 4. But Racing Lagoon would be neat for Eden to be baffled at.
This game is a passion project of the Ridge Racer Project team, so much so that they wanted RR to go this direction when the former devs expressed interest in rebooting the RR IP long after the series was silently killed off. They wish to include real world car brands and real world locations, with closer to life physics. Which is very strange because many RR fans enjoyed the arcade and fictional content the series had, and the team responsible for a memorable series wasn't looking support that.
17:39 must say the editing is on point here
7:56 and 17:15 oh my God, that is probably the most unexpected moment from Dustin Eden i've ever seen, man i am shock to see this scene 👍😊😁. Congratulation Eden

Mate, what are you doing here, go back to GadgetIn lmao.
But coming back to your point, indeed I was duly shocked too. I'm quite familiar with the Ridge Racer series but even I didn't expect it to have those kind of moments.

You would be surprised that this was part of the Ridge Racer Series as a spinoff (and yeah, Namco's attempt to cash in on the Gran Turismo/Simcade trend at the time).
Never played this game, but damn those cutscenes take me back to that era. As cheesy as it is, it was a fun time, especially compared from the last gen of games.
For me, R: Racing Evolution is like Ace Combat on wheels. It's so funny listening to the radio comms of other drivers as if they got targeted by homing missile.

This truly is if Project Aces and Polyphony made a game together. From the menus, arcadish stats, OST, voice lines, even the name Rena (like Ridge Racer's Reiko) all being Ace Combat references, and then JGTC cars on Japanese tracks with all the GT vibe. Smh I never had this game.
I'd love to see you cover midtown madness, those games were so cool I sunk an unbelievable amount of time into them but I never see anyone talk about them anymore
They where superseeded by Midnight Club, same driving style and map design, with a more appealing visual presentation and features, made by the same studio too.
The midtown madness series was class on Xbox I remember doing the missions in a taxi 😂
@@YOEL_44 maybe by the 3rd one, because the first couple midnight club games aren’t that good. Midtown Madness 1 and 2 far surpass it in detail and content. Midtown madness 3 is more similar to Midnight Club LA in terms of graphics.

Considering Namco's track record of "bringing your siblings to another game to do other jobs" (e.g. Kei and Reiko), I'm beginning to connect this Hayami Rena to Hayami Kanade from Cinderella Girls lol.

That comment where they tell you that racing is all about "pleasing your client" after that race where you need to place 2nd is the most straight-to-the-face innuendo I've seen in a game, with that literally being said race happens after the shower scene.
Ah Ridge series...
The Racing version of "Ace Combat".
naughtiest ? , street racing syndicate prob thhhhheee naughty one
Part of me wishes Namco would do another game like this again instead of “insert 900th SAO game here”. Sure they published the Project Cars games but now those are in EA and Codemasters’ F1 and WRC filled hands, and we don’t talk about Project Cars 3 with how bad that career mode was.
Ambulance drivers behind the wheel of a race car is a terrifying concept. Their main source of fuel is caffeine and gas station snacks.
Homie. They literally took the Ace Combat (Project Aces) Story Boards and have a new team for the Racing Games. tbh. I can't want to see Bandai Namco take on this title again.
A third of the way through the video, and I'm kind of stuck on the fact that they gave a Fiat 500 more grip around the corners than purpose-built sports cars with wings. And I absolutely adore the Peugeot 206! Though that's because it's the best starter car for Need for Speed Underground, at least in my opinion.
I like that you brought up the TOCA series toward the end. This whole video reminded me a lot of the game called "Pro Race Driver" in the US, which according to Wikipedia is actually TOCA Race Driver. Driving for a team and getting into petty arguments with rival drivers was the name of the game. I have very good memories of that game, even if I couldn't finish it because I was just that bad at driving Australian V8 Supercars around Philip Island.
Ah yes, the racing game that is set in the Ace Combat universe
More like Assault Horizon/Joint Assault universe since tracks and brands are based on real life. Strangereal would be Ridge Racer with the Reiko Nagase thing
All going well...
Until the roads starts singing in latim
I loved this game growing up! I really loved how there was a story centered around racing, and you had a rival to fight against. It will always hold a place in my heart
R:Racing evolution was quite good, it was also one of the few decent racing games available on the gamecube, despite all. Also, this had nothing in common with gran turismo, considering how much it was into the arcade side of things. It could be more of a clone of an other ps2 game called "S.C.A.R."
Yea all we had on GC was this and Auto Modelista.

a weird obscure racing game I played a lot back in the playstation 2 era is Drive To Survive, really fun game, has some pretty cool power up mechanics, at it was fun both as multiplayer, and single player
17:16 this reminds me of the game that sponsored kuru, i think it was called ace racers, it had/has a shower scene in the intro 😭
Basically Ridge Racer but with real-life cars. Hell, even uses the same engine later used on the PSP releases.
I can remember playing this when it came out as an 8 year old. I used to just do the night drag races with the muscle cars trying to unlock the others or something. Back then I would buy a game just for the cars on the front or back cover, hopefully a Shelby cobra. I remember using the GT500 (blue color?) and dodge charger drag cars and I think they might've only been available in that mode.
I learned on the internet when I was like 10 about one of my other favorite cars, a hummer H1, being in the game and maybe even in the licensing in the credits but I never could figure out how to get it,

fun fact: the Saleen S7 was toned down in the racing version because it was too much to compete(if i remember it right)
Also fun fact: the 206 isn't as unreliable as people think. my 206 is still running with barely any broken part since 2007. The "shifting stick" desintegrated and i needed to buy an aftermarket shifter, but this was the only broken part of the car
