What makes Jackie Chan's stuff work so well is that it is basically Action/Slapstick. Like the slip-on-a-banana-peel gag & put it in a fight seen. Or mixing Karate Kid with old school Looney Toons - Roadrunner scenes. Physical tragedy, with more physical tragedy, woven into a martial arts scene. Brilliant. (still a little confused about; why the mustaches, but good video)
5:40 real fact:Jackie was getting so pissed with that martial arts actor he called in Brad Allen,an English stunt man and member of his team to do the stunt work just right
I think the idea of "action IS comedy" and "use anything around you" was the inspiration behind the combat in the Yakuza/Like a Dragon video games. Like, I wasn't a HUGE Jackie Chan fan before getting into them, but you see some of the moves in that series and you automatically go "oh that is SO Jackie Chan".
2:11: Wrong. Jackie Chan himself has said that the reason he fights with so many different props, is because fighting gets boring if you just keep it "vanilla" after the 1000th time. So he gets creative to entertain himself.
Great vid. I'm glad they highlighted some marvel clips because I have a big issue with how they edit their fight scenes. They have too many cuts that just leave the scenes looking and feeling a little lackluster.
Actually the russo bros who did cpt america 2,3, and infinity war really learned from this. Sure they're still guilty for quick cuts and shaky cam. But go back and watch those movies again, they make a point to show that when someone get hit, they get hit HARD
My point wasn't about noticing how hard someone is being hit. I prefer a wide shot that allows me to see and follow everyone's moves and not constant cuts that just focus on action-reaction. They still have a ways to go because I didn't see anything impressive in Infinity War either.
I don't know. I haven't watched many of the marvel films after the first couple iterations they did. I bought into the Black Panther hype, and it was a complete train wreck of a film that's probably guaranteed I won't be watching any more marvel films for a while.
Thats why i loved Daredevil on Netflix. Long and uninterupted shots where you clearly see the action and you feel the hits. Thats why i was so dissapointed with Iron Fist. Too many shots during fights and it feels kinda half finished
If you've not seen it, watch the documentary Jackie Chan: My Stunts. If you want to see how perfectionist Jackie is (to absolutely insane level of detail), this will blow your mind.
It definitely is about patience. Here in the US it's usually 3 takes and that's for a standard take with just dialogue. When it comes to stunts it's a lot more complex and safety is extremely important.
For sure, most Hollywood directors don't know how to properly film action comedy, particularly fight choreography. But I don't think it's even that. When Jackie Chan's Hong Kong films were re-released in the US by a Hollywood studio (I think it was Miramax) in the early 2000s, the music and sound effects were all off, and the Hollywood studio even added audio tracks that weren't in the original. I remember buying Drunken Master 2, the re-released (Hollywood) version, and it was clear something was different. In fact, the rhythm was off, as I realize now listening to this narrator and Jackie Chan himself explain his mechanics. In a word, Hollywood gave us a watered-down, adulterated version of JC's classics, when they could have just delivered the originals (which sadly are hard to find these days). Needless to say, Hollywood gave the same treatment to his US films.
Never knew Jackie did all/most stunts himself. He may not be the only actor/actress on that part, but still crazy (yet respectable) to see what pain and injuring he went through by doing so. Stuntmen are hired to save the actors from getting seriously damaged and maybe worse, so they carrieers can go on, but some of the latters want to make the experience more real, thus putting their body and soul on the line. Only other actor I heard doing the stunts self, was Kristanna Løken (Loken) in Terminator 3. Recall in a documentary that she said she wanted to be thrown into walls etc. So most of the stunts during the fight with Arnold in the toilet-scene was prob. by herself (but bet the more severe ones was by a double).
It seems as if Woo was not allowed to have the body-count and intense violence of his Hong Kong movies when he crossed the Pacific to try Hollywood. Part of me also wonders whether he was restricted in the amount of his trademark slow-motion that he could use.
I remember the first time I saw the warehouse fight or the teahouse fight in Hard Boiled. They're still among the best action scenes I've ever seen. Figures those fucking bean counters who are running Hollywood would fuck things up. Reminds me of The Thing prequel from 2011. They were actually doing it with practical effects, just like in Carpenter's classic, until some douchenozzle from the studio got to see what they were doing and told them to do it all over with CGI instead. They tried to tell him that it would be looking a lot better after post-production was done but he apparently insisted that he knew better than the people who actually do the shit for a living.
That's because they hired an experienced fight choreographer and long time Jackie Chan colleague, Yuen Woo Ping. He also choreographed Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Kill Bill vol. 1&2; The Forbidden Kingdom; as well as The Matrix sequels.
Jackie is obviously incredible and his stunt work and unique choreography is unmatched. But whatever you just watched was such a bad showing of his work because the scenes kept getting constantly interrupted by other random non-relevant fights as well as old Jackie interviews.
Jackie Chan is absolutely right, that's why all of his films are an absolute delight to watch.

John wick is the best action movie in recent years because it follows Jackie's action filming style
No
It may be the closest but it's still nowhere near
Not at all fude
for jacky chan times , you must try to imagine how great the movies was , time when there is no CGI and just real stunts.
This lady reminds me of the emotionless girl from Twilight.
I’d smash this chick over Bella from twilight 😂
Jackie Chan is one of the greatest EVER ALL TIME in the history of Movies

Not gonna lie. Clicked partly because of that outfit.
Video ended up being really badass though. Jackie Chan's Legend of Drunken Master is a pretty awesome one.

Ya'll need to react to Jackie Chan vs. Benny the Jet Urquidez. The greatest martial arts fight caught on film.

Jackie Chan is one of the bravest man in the world. 🤗😊👍 and this girl nice!🐼

Jackie chan best human and actor in the world ;)
They should let Jackie direct the next avengers movie

I mean he has a plug in his head from a stunt he messed up, jumping into a tree, and he cracked his skull very badly
Jackie Chan started out as a stunt performer for Bruce Lee.
7:50 She looked away from the action scene and missed the comedy of the scene.
The punch in the nuts in the end 😂
99% of who’s watching this video is just because of this girl 😒
She draws in the "male" viewers.
Not me
I'm here for the action
Nope
Sometime it feels like that he is an incarnation of Bruce Lee what you say guys
Is she doing some type of Bayonetta thing?
Jackie Chan is the best
Jackie Chan is a fucking legend
Your girl is a total turn off and low in energy.
You have keenness, positive attitude and energy, you react alone.
His greatest movie is The Legend of Drunken Master.
I think the girl spends more time not-watching and doing other things than actually paying attention.

I wonder if there are similar reasons why John Woo's Hollywood movies seem so bland compared to his Hong Kong classics.

...and, of course, it was no doubt a case of “You *will* use CGI or we’ll cut your funding!”
Check out Bruce Lee's "way of the dragon" nunchukka fight in the alley.
The only American film that nails this is Matrix
That's because they hired an experienced fight choreographer and long time Jackie Chan colleague, Yuen Woo Ping. He also choreographed Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Kill Bill vol. 1&2; The Forbidden Kingdom; as well as The Matrix sequels.
ChuckRazor Actually from Matrix’s perspective, it’s just Jackie Chan’s longtime collaborator. Crouching Tiger came after Matrix.
I like matrix but comparing Jackie chan to matrix is just pointless.
