In Chinese culture - and I'm sure in many others - you can refer to people as sister/brother/auntie/uncle as a sign of respect and as part of the hierarchy. You don't need to be related.
Shaolin Soccer is an obvious one to check out next, but the best Stephen Chow film is probably A Chinese Odyssey.

The landlord's name is Yuen Wah. He played the role of the old man in Tao Lo in the movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Additionally, the Kung Fu Hustle movie poster was visible in Shang-Chi's bedroom. Finally, the ten rings in the movie were portrayed as armbands/bracelets instead of finger rings as depicted in the comic book and were worn by the tailor character in Kung Fu Hustle.

i was told that was because coolie's kungfu is more of muscle, less chi, aka less sensitive, lowest level among those three, so he didnt even realise those two killers were there. and when the 10ring tailor was pulled out of his shop, he at least was able to spot that music, and noticed the killer immediately.

I’m always really moved at the end when he turns his adversary into a friend by simply saying, “I can teach you.” The Beast recognizes he has so much to learn outside of hatred & violence. The One was broken when he was a kid. Being a naive and good person just got him pissed on and beaten up. So he's trying so hard to become a bad guy. A con. But since he's really good at heart, he's just really bad on being bad. The forceful laugh when he rob the girl for the first time is a subtle hint that he's really faking it being a bad heartless monster. When beast got him near death, his chi flow opened. He's got the clarity and content to his full potential.
Anyway, great video guys. I've been watching so many reactions to this movie, you're the only one remember the frog foreshadowing in the asylum. Nice
Also, did you tried react to Shaolin Soccer yet? It's a must after Kung Fu Hustle. It's the early movie from the same guy, Stephen Chow, on writing and directing. It's the cult classic.
The scene in Kung Fu Hustle movie when he's destroyed kids' soccer ball? It's a reference to Shaolin Soccer, which is so good, the fans demanding sequel for years. So he's answering with this scene in which he said, "No more soccer!"

Most of the big characters are big kung fu stars of old.
The gay tailor and the assassin musician guy with the nails that was fighting him in his store are old action stars. The latter worked with Jackie Chan in some films.
The landlord and landlady are pretty similar, old martial arts stars, the landlady actress even put on weight just for this role.
The guy playing Coolie, the guy with the kick style, is also a somewhat well known stuntman and martial artist, he’s in many films as a supporting actor.
Stephen Chow has a crew of actors that you see in all of his movies, the fat guy is one of them, as well as the two leaders of the axe gang.
Most interesting though is the story of the actor who plays the Beast. This was his return role to acting after decades. He is an action / martial arts actor who fell out of favour with the communist party in china so he was pretty much banned from starring in movies, missing his prime as a result, and Stephen Chow invited him to do this film which kickstarted his acting career again.

But yeah, Shaolin Soccer is the next logical one to try. It's the previous film by the same guy (who btw, is the main character, the writer, and the director)

"Big Brother" not only doesn't need to mean they are related, it's just what people use to show respect when they call someone who seems to be older. Also "big brother" is used to call gang boss. Big brother is the big boss, second brother is the second in rank. Or if they are the disciples of the same master, the first one who became the student is called big brother.

Coolie and fairy are nicknames, insulting ones at that, not the characters actual names.
Coolie is an insult for calling someone lazy and calling Donut "fairy" is basically the landlord calling Donut gay.

It's a shame that you guys don't understand even 10% of the references in this movie and it ain't even your fault because you guys didn't grow up in that environment. This movie hits differently to people who grew up in the 1970s to 1990s in South East Asia. It distilled 50 years of Kung Fu movies, wuxia novels (the comic book equivalent in chinese pop culture in the past) and popular culture (references to the Untouchables, the Matrix and the Shining as well as Road Runner) mixed with Stephen Chow's unique brand of comedy. Watching this movie when it came out was really an experience to be had. Perhaps kind of like how watching Star Wars Ep 4 now feels different to watching in the 1970s.
It is also extremely meta because a lot of the older actors such as landlord, beast and landlady were famous kung fu actors in the prime shaw brothers era. This film revitalized their careers. Fun fact, Landlord and Landlady were in the same peking opera troupe as Jackie Chan. You can say they are his seniors in martial arts.
This movie did really well and has a lot of rewatch value but it's success also brought some negatives to asian cinema. Producers got lazy and tried again and again to copy the style of this movie which of course couldn't recreate the magic of this movie.
