I stop at Chance's grave every time I travel through Dubois.... his family keeps a notebook beside the head stone for folks to sign... I leave a trinket of some kind every time I stop. Usually a new American flag for his grave.... I sign the book and tidy up and leave.... What a truely amazing story and young man... if only there were more kids like Chance, would have no more wars.... Thank you Chance for your service and sacrifice....
This movie kills me, Chance Phelps was with 3rd Batallion, 11th Marines when he passed. My husband is currently with 3/11 in Afghanistan, I can't tell you how hard I cried watching this movie. God bless our troops Semper Fi Chance!
I've done that duty to bring home my lifelong best friend that was killed in Vietnam. Toughest duty I ever did. Being a US Army Special Forces veteran, I was rock-steady the entire trip until I met with his parents. When his mom began to weep, I became a pile of emotional mush.
From a former Marine to my brothers here. I have a hard time watching the movie about Chance, but it does bring me hope for the people of America. I have watched it many times, and, no doubt, will watch it many more times. LCpl Phelps, rest in peace. You've earned it. Col. Strobl, it's okay. We ALL miss him.
I have seen the movie 3 times now and each time I choke up, this even made me choke up. Truely an epic story that should never be forgotten, about any of our troops.
I watched the movie last night and it's Sunday morning and my heart still feels heavy, like I knew this kid and miss him! God Bless, R.I.P SEMPRE FI !!
The movie fills my old eyes with tears. The home videos at the end are a gut punch. You see Chance Phelps is about the age of my children. They both chose a different path. They both are respectful, aware of the sacrifice of men and women in the armed forces.
I am speechless... My boyfriend is a Marine, and this really touched my heart... Let us not forget all the men and women who are serving/or who have served for our country. Always continue to support our troops out there, and continue to pray for all their families back home.
I have a 20 year old son and can not even fathom. After 30 years in the fire service and a time of that at ground zero. I salute and commend all of our hero’s who serve and halve served our great country. Sempre fi.
My husband served 4 tours to Iraq and 2 tours to Korea. Army, navy, air force, marines it doesn't matter they are brothers and sisters and that's what matters. This movie touched my soul and while we may not support this war we must support our troops! Rest in peace chance your name lives on!
After watching the HBO movie "Taking Chance", I was moved by the story and the reaction of those who witnessed this marine's journey home. I'm proud and grateful to the men and women who service to protect our freedoms. Rest in peace, marine!!! Sempre Fi! Sgt. L E Turley USMC (1972-1976)
wussie, thank you for sharing. This just came to light after watching "Taking Chance." RIP Comrade, on this Memorial Day. You will never be forgotten. Never! Chaplain VFW Post 1012.
I saw "Taking Chance" today and could not stop myself from crying. It was one of the most touching stories I have seen. Thank you to Lt. Col. Michael Strobl for sharing his thoughts and heartfelt emotions about his journey as an escort for Chance. God bless Chance and all our fallen soldiers.
Watching his story no matter how many times i see it,i am so over whelm with the bravery of our young men in uniform. My brother Dorian Pierre Sabbath was a Marine,he.didnt see battle. He joined in the early 70s.He was a Marine through and through. The Few,The Proud,The Marines. Thanks for telling his story.Dorian trained im Cal,he was from Detroit Michigan, died Aug,1999.
"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13 Chance I could tell was a great man even though I am not a soldier. He was ann honorable soldier and a true Marine. While I cannot say that I understand the brotherhood between you Marines and other soldiers, I can definitely say that I appreciate the sacrifice that you make. Thank you and God bless you all.
Thank you to the ones who made "Taking Chance" this needed to be done for all the ones who served. it was a view that had to be seen. My Son A Marine who served in Iraq. this was my biggest worry. my heart goes out to the familys who lost loved ones in war. thank you to all service men and women. Semper Fi
I just watched this video in awe of the tremendous respect I feel as an American.. We've lost so many in this mess of a war, but Chance's story touched my heart. I watched the movie as suggested by my own Son several times, but this video brings me to tears with the utmost respect for all of our Soldiers, fallen or other wise..... God Bless Our Troops... Signed an Army brat and Proud Citizen....
Saw the movie last night and it tore my heart up. Very impressed that his sister was a Navy Petty Officer, and her fiance an Army Sgt.. RIP Chance and Semper Fi from a retired Navy Corpsman
Omg.....R.I.P Chance and I know this is too late but I guess late better than not at all....🙏🙏 May your family be at peace....and THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE 💯🇺🇲👍🤝 I am from Riverton Wyoming and I remember when they brought him home and that was the saddest day I will always remember. I had a friend that was a U.S.M.C and I lost her but in a car accident on the Camp Pendleton..U S.M.C Base. The reason I'm writing this today is because I seen this movie on an ad. I was told about this movie"Taking Chance" and I started to watch it but couldn't watch more cuz this war hero is from my hometown and I cried. I'm so proud of him for taking his life to save his brothers in arms. I solute him as well as the Lt.
I too have seen the video and the making of it. I have the deepest respect for our men in women in uniform. Being born at NAS JAX and DAMN PROUD Navy, my heart goes out the Phelps Family and the families of all of our fallen hero's . I greatly thank you for posting this video. To all of our active duty Men and Women and your families, Thank you for my continued freedom...

I watched the film Taking Chance today. I am deeply touched even I am not American. Chance is a true hero. I think we remember him not for his touching story, but for an extraordinary man doing extraordinary things. I hope his family will find peace again and all the best. My best wishes to all the US marines from HongKong.
Just watched the movie "Taking Chance". So moving. Was glad to see so many Americans paying their respect on Chance's journey home. Grateful to all Service men who have given the ultimate gift, and to all that have served, are serving, and those who will serve.
I can't breathe for the sorrow...I can't see for the tears...Everyone who has stood on the wall to protect the likes of me...Thank you just isn't enough to say...
I have shown this movie to my US History students for Veteran's Day or Memorial Day. I have seen this movie multiple times and it still strikes and emotional nerve in me every time. Thank you for your service Veterans
I just finish watching this movie and I cried, I am not an American but I really do respect what these men and women are doing for their country. RIP to all the fallen soldier!!
This story reminds me of a line I once was lucky enough to hear. " It is not the number of your days, it is the days that you number." Meaning, your life can be long or short, but, it matters most what you did in those days you had. Chance is but one of a myriad of men whose bravery shines alight. "All gave some, but, some gave all." It is in these moments we as Americans can appreciate the sacrifice whether or not we understand it. Therefore, let us remember and never forget the brave, honorable men that choose this path.
We all need to remember all our military men and women who have given there lives for our country and freedom. Let us never forget. God bless you Chance and all who have served and are serving today.
I've seen the movie as well, but when I saw this vid, I felt so emotional when I saw this. I as a Filipino, would like to give my deepest condolences, and also my US Army cousin based in Georgia would like to give his deepest condolences to Pvt.1st Class Chance Russell Phelps. He is an extraordinary soldier, at a rank of Private 1st class, he's received 8 medals and ribbons. He was a loving son and brother, and a dedicated soldier. My regards also and respect to Lt.Col. Michael Strobl.
you know my grandfather was a ww2 vet, pow and i wasnt sure if my generation had heroes but from watching his movie and this i now know for sure that we do. god bless chance phelps and his family. no matter if you agree with this war or not, theres not a sole out there who cant agree that chance is a hero and that the world would be a better place if more of us were as heroic as him. the movie actually made me feel like i need to do more with my life. thanks
My Grandfather was a radio operator during Normandy. He was also a firefighter who won a heroism award for bravery when he rescued 3 people from a burning house while he was off duty. I never knew him as he died before he was born. He died at age 57. The same age I am today.
I hope you do join, I would welcome you as a brother. Freedom is never free, and we all must pay the price in someway. Never is it paid so willingly and gladly than in the hearts and minds of every Marine.
I never had the pleasure of serving with Chance, because the Corps saw fit to make me a P.O.G. However, I did have the honor and the privilege of being the bunk right next to his in bootcamp in 2nd Bn, Fox Co., Platoon 2008, in the summer of 2003. Chance and I found every opportunity to put his practical joke skills to great use. Here it is, 19 years after his death, and I still feel like I've been gut punched on April 9th. I miss you everyday, brother! Til Valhalla! Keep the streets secure in Heaven, buddy. Semper Fi!
When I first read the journal of colonel Strobl I was reading through a web site about a ship I was stationed on in the early seventies. The USS Tulare LKA 212. A marine and cargo transport (Amphib Fleet). The only other military journal that has given me that much emotion was reading the journal of Dr. Haynes. The medical officer and survivor of the USS Indianapolis after delivering the bombs that ended WW II. I was torpedoed and sunk in shark infested waters.
PFC Phelps, RIP brother, you gave the ultimate sacrifice and as a fellow soldier, you earned my respect in so many ways. May you be in the presence of our Lord and savior.😢

Even more amazing is that a few of those that served with Chance, visit his gravesite each year on Memorial Day.
To you both...Thank You For Your Service To This Great Country! 🤜🤛
Thank you for your service. I wish I could visit his grave.
Cannot believe that 17 people gave this a thumbs down. Those 17 are a disgrace to Americans.
They are probably liberal Americans who hate this country. Love my brother
He died for them and that right as well.

ege.I thank and honor everyone who serves in the Armed Forces. They are putting their life on the line for our country everyday.People who are not in the Armed Forces get to see their family everyday, while Men and Women in the Armed Forces only have a picture to look at,and pray that they'll get to go home to their family.I think about the brave men and women who are, have, and will serve in the Armed Forces. They will soon be my brothers and sisters.I may not know every man and woman who is serving
