Jackie Jr is a sad story. Not just because he was stupid, but he shows more affection to his father after his passing than when he was alive. I suspect this is the case with most father/son relationships. If your Father is still alive and showed you fatherly love, be thankful for the time you still have with him. If he’s passed on, he’s still with you and don’t be afraid to talk to him. He’s most likely still looking out for you. God bless.
Jackie Jr just used his father as an excuse to make his way into some sort of mob life. He didn’t really care. If he did care he would’ve finished school like his father really wished.
Ralph was smart not to participate in that robbery. Tony had his father, uncle and Dickie all made guys and heavyweights, nobody would have touched him. Jackie had his brother Richie in the life he would've come out and speak for him. I'm not sure what connections Silvio had but he was already around Paulie and Tony's relatives so that must carry some weight. Ralphie had nobody. Feech would've made an example out of him.
@@Pocket-Calculator the movie was a BLM infomercial. There was nothing Sopranois' ish in it. They sold the movie as "Tony Sopranos beginning his mafia career". but it was the OPPOSITE. I skipped thru most if it. David Chase knew he couldn't write the Sopranos now with this woke environment..
Also, Feech had been away almost 20 years at this point, and the story Ralphie's telling happened in the 70s--Pretty much ancient history and as far as anyone was concerned, Feech was in jail, basically dead and buried. Anyone else kind of get the feeling that the part where Ralph says "I got the clap I couldn't go" was bullshit. Sounds like he pussed out back then and gave that reason. But the way he says it sounded really phony.
I think its also kind of a meta thing. Ralph's character didnt exist until this season, but has known these guys for years, so it give him that extra layer of separation as to why Tony/Silvio weren't close with him anymore.
Plothole: Ralph says that when they were kids they had a crew: Tony, Jackie Sr., Silvio, and himself. In Many Saints of Newark, Sil is clearly a grown man while Tony is still a kid.
Nevertheless I'm shocked that Jackie Aprile and Anthony Soprano weren't reprimanded punished or even whacked by Feech La Manna for robbing a made guy's game. They made the threat to kill to take money right. I think the 1 very Important factor that Ralph didn't mention was that Jackie & Tony had Johnny Boy Soprano, Corrado Junior Soprano, & Richie Aprile representing them and this implicitly guranteed Jackie&Tony immunity, giving them untouchable status long before having their stripes. The only ones who didn't partake in the robbery were Ralph Ciffaretto and Silvio Dante. Both men from what we know didn't have brothers or fathers or family members with stripes. That's why Silvio and Ralph didn't partake in the robbery because if shit hit the fan and one of them ended up shooting someone they would get capped and if it went smoothly they didnt have the protection that Jackie & Tony had and they woukd certainly be hunted and get at least a pretty bad beatdown for partaking.
I may be over analyzing things but I always assumed Silvio was the getaway driver. You can't pull a scheme like that and NOT have a set of wheels and someone in the driver's seat ready to get you away. If that's the case, he technically was involved but didn't carry a piece. Maybe that's why Ralph didn't bother to mention him in his story.
Billy Marino I can see tony running to the car with the money and asks Silvio to drive quickly. Sil: don’t rush me sunshine you’ve been rushing me all fucking night : )
1:20 I love the use of mafia lingo here. "Mustache" refers to the old term "Mustache Pete", used to distinguish Sicilian or other Italian mafiosi - who had been made in and committed their first killings in Italy before coming to America - from their American-born compatriots.

Ralph had no idea what Jackie was gonna do. He was simply telling him a story. Besides, this pathway in his life didn't start with Ralph. It started with his uncle Richie.
Ralph was a devious asshole. He knew exactly how hard Jr wanted to be in with the crew... So he told him that story deliberately.. hoping that Jackie would attempt it. In fact, he even let him know where the card game is... and when it was always played. Hence he set up a disaster waiting to happen.

Clearly the actors playing Sil, Paukie, and Pussy were 10+ years older than Gandolfini. The original show sort of implied these guys were vaguely the same age, and way back when viewers just sort of accepted casting and story oddities with an "okay, fine then." But by the time we get to stuff made after 2010, post Cinemasins, producers are self conscious about hecklers who are going to watch these things anyway. Writers rethink and overthink details to stem off people who point out discrepancies in old movies and shows.
@Keaton Castillo And the reason he fetishized the mafia is because he had "father figures" like Ralph who mythologized a story about Jackie sr. and Tony.
what i find interesting about this scene is that you can tell ralph feels as if his shortcomings in the business are directly linked to his missing part in the robbery, that’s why tony and jackie went farther than he ever did in their careers. in reality, as good of an earner as he was, he was a demented psycho - more than anyone else in a world where those traits are not uncommon.
"He wanted it, so he stepped up and took it." Some surprisingly good advice from Ralphie. If you want something in life, you can't just wait around for it to drop in your lap. You have to go out there and fight for it.
Why would Ralph want Jackie to die? How does that benefit him in anyway. I saw giving him a gun and bringing him along on collections as him trying to bond with Jackie because he knew Jackie didnt like or respect him. Not a chance he wanted Jackie to fuck up because he knew it would reflect badly on him.
he didnt want his demise.....ralph was an insecure man.....mentorship makes insecure men feel good. It was to gratify his own ego not to hurt jackie jr
He taught me how to make spaghetti so the macaroni absorbs the gravy instead of just coats it. The most crucial part is that you put the pasta back in the pot, you add a little gravy and a little butter. Then you put the fire back on for 45 seconds and stir it up real nice.
That's because just like her with being John McCain's daughter and constantly riding his coattails,he had no actual identity for himself outside of being his father's son.
I get the feeling this was like a master stroke deception by Ralphie. First he hears Jackie Jr. talking about how great Chris is, who's trying to scalp him from Ralph's crew, and then he offhand mentions a story Jackie can't resist. Then he starts going off about how his Dad got made for doing something that frankly sounds improbable. How would ripping off a made guy make you? How would you even be able to arrange sitdowns with a small crew nobody cared about without walking into a trap? It doesn't sound right, but to dumbass Jackie Jr. it sounds inspiring and cool. Remember this is the kid who plays Scrabble words like "ass" and "poo." Ralphie couldn't have probably dreamed how beautifully this little act of manipulation would pay off. Not only would Jackie Jr. get himself killed, Ralphie would be the one who got to make the order. Ralph knows Jackie thinks he's a loser old man so he plays up the loser card to convince him he's nothing to worry about, too. The stars kinda aligned on that one.
@@kkgt6591 It’s also a hint to Jackie’s state of mind and Ralph’s intentions. This is a kid who has to be reminded to rinse plates off and can’t use a dishwasher right. No way could he pull off a robbery.
@@GhostTower Because the writers have the exact same views as their characters, right? Fucking lol. These are italian mobsters not black history professors.
This scene right here, blows Many Saints of Newark apart, and not in a good way. 1. He lists himself, Jackie Aprile Sr, Tony, and Silvio, as running their own crew as kids, doing small scores. In the movie, Silvio is at least 10-15 years older than Tony, with Pussy and Paulie all there in the real Soprano crew already, and around the same age as well. 2. With Silvio being in the real Soprano family already like the movie suggests, adding onto his age problem like I mentioned, and how he treats Tony the night Dickie is wacked, and how he acts, that version of Silvio would never be running scores on pot and other things, with three kid/teenagers who were not made. 3. Also with being kids / teenagers, when is this Feech story supposed to happen? Five minutes after Many Saints? Tony was already almost out of high school by the end of the film, this story should have already happened, and the appearance in the show was that Tony was already in the family proper when Dickie is killed. 4. She was a who-ah
I think Silvio is in his early 20s in MSoN, so maybe only 5-6 years older than Tony. That is a big difference when you’re a teenager… but not so much as you get older. Say Tony, Ralphie, Jackie Sr, were 21…Silvio is only 26-27…they could still be in the same crew. Paulie is most definitely 10+ years older than Tony and he’s in his crew. Plus, “‘kid” is throw around and doesn’t always mean literal kid. Phil Leotardo calls his 47 year old brother, Billy, a “kid”. MSoN did have some issues, but I don’t think Silvio’s age was one of them. Plus in real life, Steven Van Zandt was 10 years older than James Gandolfini and also was bald in real life…
@@trer24 I get that, but in the show, it is established that him and Tony are almost the same age, went to school together, and he says "I have known you since you were a kid Ton". They have Tony as 13 then 18 in MSoN. This story makes it sound like they all got in together, Silvio is made already when Tony is 13.
The movie is shit but it wasn't meant to be accurate. This became apparent when the change they time frame making chris a baby and tony dam near an adult.
"There was this old mustache named... Feech LaManna. He was *made* before the electric light and in his day spending time in the can entitled you to earn."

Many saints of newark obviously forgot about this scene. They put Sil in Dick Moltisante crew, I thought that was his dad when I first saw the fucking thing.
I'm thinking it's doubtful that the takedown of Feech's card game will be depicted in The Many Saints of Newark, sadly: The movie is only supposed to cover the period from 1967-1975. The heist likely took place in the very early 80s.
I always thought that Ralph was lying about being sick. Think about it from Ralph's perspective. Feech was going to be so mad and embarrassed that he got robbed that he would want blood. For sure, nothing would happen to Tony and Jackie Sr on account of their family connection. So the blame would fall and him and Silvio. To my knowledge, neither had a family member who was a made guy. So he probably thought why risk it.
I wish they'd done more with the Swiss Miss Chocolate Sensation. I felt there was a lot of significance there. Maybe we'll see it again in Many Saints of Newark.
Always wondered if Ralphie planted this seed knowing Jackie Jr would be dumb enough to mess things up. He was a liability for the family and would make Ralph look bad
Great scene, and amazing performance from Joey Pants. But one thing seems weird...LaManna was made in Italy, but he didn't have a hint of a Silician accent. Did he come from America, go to the old country, get made there, then come back? I guess it's possible.
i heard they first wanted to make him an Italian, but dropped the idea later, so yeah, your speculation might be right, he is an American who was made there and later came back probably.
I think either way it would benefit Ralph.....I also think he just likes to fuck with people and manipulate them. If Jackie gets hurt...it will fuck with Tony's head. If the Jackie is successful he will appreciate Ralph's little advice of being ballsy and going for it.
"Once upon a time, There was 'Three SHINEBOXES'............... There was PAPA SHINEBOX, MAMA SHINEBOX.............., And of course.......... BABY SHINEBOX!!!!!!!!!"
This story pretty much sums up Ralph’s story arc throughout his run on the show. Despite his intelligence, leadership abilities, and massive earning potential, he’s always been held back by his poor impulse control and bad decision making. If he had participated in the robbery, he would’ve gotten made alongside Tony and Jackie, but because he was having unprotected sex with a loose woman, he ended up sitting it out and it took him years to catch up to them.
"Connected or not..Him me & Tony..gonna rob him" Tony had Johnny Boy & Junior Soprano, as well as Uncle Dicky Moltisanti and Pauli G. an unmade young man couldn't possibly be MORE connected.
While some say that this whole story was for Ralphie to get rid of Jackie Jr..... he has no reason to. Ralphie and Jackie Sr. goes way back and he's going out with Ro, so chances are he was just trying to give the kid some useful advice. Teaching him the difference between just being an associate vs actually being made. To be made, you need to seize the initiative and get noticed, thus the story about how Tony, Sil, and others robbed Feech's game, and getting noticed. Ralphie probably wanted Jackie to show some more initiative, as per his reasoning to Tony about why he's bringing him along for collections and stuff. Just Jackie Jr and his crew just messed things up by not having the mental fortitude to not shoot up the place, killing the dealer (associate), and shooting/hitting some made guys (Furio). Had the whole thing went down identical like how his father did it, Jackie Jr would have been on his way to being made as well.
I love how Jackie Jr doesn’t realize that Tony had the protection of both his Father and Uncle who were most likely Capos at that point and Jackie had the protection of Richie who at the very least was made at that point.
Ralph forgot to tell them that Tony Soprano and Jackie Aprile Sr. never fired any shots and that they weren't high on drugs when they carried out the robbery.

@IRISH LAD It was Tony and Jackie Aprile, Sr.

Nevertheless I'm shocked that Jackie Aprile and Anthony Soprano weren't reprimanded punished or even whacked by Feech La Manna for robbing a made guy's game. They made the threat to kill to take money right.
I think the 1 very Important factor that Ralph didn't mention was that
Jackie & Tony had
Johnny Boy Soprano, Corrado Junior Soprano, & Richie Aprile representing them and this implicitly guranteed Jackie&Tony immunity, giving them untouchable status long before having their stripes.
The only ones who didn't partake in the robbery were Ralph Ciffaretto and Silvio Dante. Both men from
what we know didn't have brothers or fathers or family members with stripes.

Agree, makes no sense🤨
Clearly the actors playing Sil, Paukie, and Pussy were 10+ years older than Gandolfini. The original show sort of implied these guys were vaguely the same age, and way back when viewers just sort of accepted casting and story oddities with an "okay, fine then." But by the time we get to stuff made after 2010, post Cinemasins, producers are self conscious about hecklers who are going to watch these things anyway. Writers rethink and overthink details to stem off people who point out discrepancies in old movies and shows.

what i find interesting about this scene is that you can tell ralph feels as if his shortcomings in the business are directly linked to his missing part in the robbery, that’s why tony and jackie went farther than he ever did in their careers. in reality, as good of an earner as he was, he was a demented psycho - more than anyone else in a world where those traits are not uncommon.

Jackie Jr. sounds like an Italian male version of Megan McCain with how often he says, "my fawtha"

This story pretty much sums up Ralph’s story arc throughout his run on the show. Despite his intelligence, leadership abilities, and massive earning potential, he’s always been held back by his poor impulse control and bad decision making. If he had participated in the robbery, he would’ve gotten made alongside Tony and Jackie, but because he was having unprotected sex with a loose woman, he ended up sitting it out and it took him years to catch up to them.

an unmade young man couldn't possibly be MORE connected.
for some god damn reason i didnt think of that. his dad is the boss!
I really hope they reference this in the prequel Sopranos movie
I have suspicion that Ralphie lied about him getting with a girl..I think he chickened out
