Johnny Sack was one of the most fascinating characters on this show. Clever, manipulative, sadistic,self-destructive and warm hearted. Also one of the best dressed.
@Zachary Jacobson Johnny Sack was an old school Cosa Nostra mobster, and in the old days, if you would have really publicly joked about the weight of the morbidly obese wife of an underboss, especially an underboss of a Five Families' family, you would have ended up buried in a concrete pillar in a matter of days.

None of them did, they never considered people outside their thing as equals. Only Tony ever cared about what happened to Tracee, but that's because he was a bit of a self righteous hypocrite who thought he was above them albeit with a small ounce of humanity. The other mobsters only got angry at Ralph for turning down Tony's drink.
Yeah but in their morality and code her raising her hands to him is a death sentence alone , she woulda been whacked either way if it was the 40s-60s maybe even later but for sure in that period especially as she wasn't connected
@@driplerthadripper That's why the audience rallied behind Tony. Not because Tony was right under his own rules, but because under that little ounce of humanity he shows his family and animals extended to the victim of a horrific murder, despite the obvious hypocrisy like how Tony would murder jackie jr or matt bevilaqua (arguably both more deserving of death) it never bothered Tony, yet he looked down on his own guys for doing the same. HIs hypocrisy with how Ralphie went too far is something he ended up pointing out before he died, Tony wanted to be the hero, but that's because his ego needed that to cope with his self-loathing.
I like how Johnny makes Ralph think that Carmine has no idea about Ralph so that he doesn't go directly to Carmine for anything. We found out later that Carmine recognized Ralph for the powerful earner that he was. He effectively made himself the shoulder to cry on for all the disgruntled members of Tony's captains/higher ups. He put himself in a position to know about all the internal issues with the NJ family.
How Johnny uses people of course. The Irony of it is he got Paulie under this thumb by telling him Carmine was impressed by him. While he's wrangling Ralph here because he sees Johnny as his only way to escape the Soprano crew, but he doesn't know that he might've had substantial pull with Carmine if he had talked to him directly.
Not only a shoulder to cry on, but also making guys like Ralph and Paulie feel indebted to him. Goes a long way in a world built on relationships and conspiracies.
That’s crazy because I literally just watched the clip where they had the sit down about Ralph for what he said about Ginny. Carmine said Ralph is not getting clipped because he’s a good earner. Carmine did recognize Ralph but Johnny was being smart in making it seem as if carmine doesn’t know him. Good observation
same with the way he tells tony that capo was ralphs idea & that he "threw cold water on it" then he tells ralph "he's delighted you wanna see him" after tony says "I dont wanna talk about this with anyone again" 😭😭😭 "he indicated he's very open to talking." 😂
Johnny Sack is devoted to his wife and loves her unconditionally, but is apathetic about Ralph beating an innocent young woman to death. Tony cheats on his wife without giving her honor a moment's thought, but is willing to take personal damage to stand by his anger towards the wrong done to that girl. Interesting difference in moral formula for both these guys.
It goes a bit deeper than that because Johnny never even met the stripper whereas Tony was giving her advice from time to time and he felt she was looking up to him like a child looks up to a parent. Tony has a thing for living beings who cannot defend themselves. Johnny on the other hand just saw her as a random stripper. Hence the different reactions. Obviously how they treat their wives, that's a different thing to me.

@jessesam Funny, it proves how Sac was such a manipulative scumbag. He told Ralph that Carmine doesn't know who he is but he does & told Paulie Carmine knew who he was but he didn't. This is also why he moved to New Jersey and than told Tony he isn't interested in sticking his beak into his business but he did.

johnny sack so smart, he used to tell Paulie Carmine thought highly of him because he knew thats what he wanted to hear, but to tell Ralph Carmine doesnt even know he is, he uses the Boss name to work on people
Not only that, we know that Carmine wants Ralph in the business. What Johnny Sack did here was put Ralp in debt to NY, have control over the shared projects and get Tony to not even suspecting the whole manipulation (He told Tony that Ralph wanted to compromise, told Ralph Tony wants want too and suddenly both want to compromise on the terms that fit Johnny). It shows that the smart mobsters do read "The Prince" and learn.
Carmine throws cold water on John's request to sanction a hit on Ralph one year later. Carmine knows who he is when there's millions of dollars at stake!
Anyone that knows this show knows how hard Ralphie was holding back a joke or smart ass comment when Johnny said it takes a toll on the joints. I'm rolling just thinking about what he wanted to say.
Johnny Sack was the most intelligent gangster in the series. He played others more than anyone. And yet the one who worked for his family more than anyone. Truly an interesting character
nope, Carmine was. He didnt care about any of that personal bullshit as long as it brought money, which is the reason these gangsters exist: to bring money
Johnny *was* prior to the Ginny stuff. After that his character did a huge 180 and started making rash judgements based on personal grudges which was completely out of character IMO and one of the few times I thought The Sopranos writing was iffy. Like the other commenter said, Carmine Sr. was truly the best mobster in the show. Smart, tactical, and kept any personal feelings completely out of it. For him and only him it truly was just business.
Sacks is mostly portrayed as being frustrated with Carmine senior and being on the verge of whacking his boss. Sacks is very clever and can scope out opportunities. But he has severe temperament issues and if angered on issues of prestige can fall into spirals of unnecessary self destruction.
this show is a great example of how life is. nobody says what they truly mean and quite frankly these unwritten rules of how society is and how we should behave is pretty sad to me. we have the ability to communicate but we cannot speak our minds in most cases
I have found that speaking your mind does no good anyway, most people are mindless robots and will just stare at you like an idiot if you talk to them with any kind of knowledge or insight.
Truth is, there are no rules. Never have been. So why put so much stock in it? Every manmade institution is just that-manmade. In the real physical world, a $500 bill is worth almost nothing compared to a bologna sandwich. We should all start standing up for what we really believe. The pain and embarrassment would be temporary, the positive change in the world would be permanent. Now go home and get your fuckin shinebox.
We can't speak our minds cause we are all different... so we all have different minds that don't see alike... so we have to find something that we can agree on... which aint much...
"You know, I don't want to talk about that situation ever again...with anybody. You understand me?" I love that line and the the way Tony delivered it. His tone, intonation, pure gagster. And there is always the "You understand me?" rhetorical question to add more emphasis to it.
I find it telling, that he would rather sit outside in the cold listening to a football game on the radio, than be inside watching it on a big screen TV...just so he can smoke.
He might have thought that gangsters who kill people all the time, sometimes for purely personal reasons, wouldn't mind him doing the same to someone who was dead the moment she hit someone as connected as Ralph.
LOVE the way Johnny Sack plays Tony and Ralph against each other. "I talked to him. He's delighted you want to see him. He's very open to working something out." I cringed and laughed simultaneously when I heard those lines.
This extends to season 4 even. He tells Ralph that Carmine has no idea who he is (which is a lie, they share construction and he oversees millions) and later tells Paulie that Carmine asks about him despite really not knowing who HE is. Tony and Johnny Sack had the best instincts.
@@ionthegravity2 Lil Carmine was a threat too he was behind Joey Peeps death which is like saying FU to Johnny Sack. Both Sr and Jr prefer money and peace over violence but both were always a threat.
Eh they weren't really negotiations, both parties just needed to blow off steam and throw each other an obvious bone (apology + forgiveness). Johnny Sack talked them out of stupid impulsive threats (clipping each other) and mediated in order to ensure his family's interest while maintaining influence in Soprano family affairs.
@@colorcombinations7387honestly he probably did more good for Tony's organization than Tony himself. If it wasn't for sac, they'd both kill each other. He really prevented some internal fractures.
The writing for the show was at such an incredibly high level. Even though these are a bunch of criminals, there is still so much to relate to. When frustrations are high, and people have private conversations, and then relay the conversations to other affected parties, it is so very human that humans shade the descriptions of what was said to further their own purposes. Brilliant writing.
To think that Jonnny Sack saves Ralphs life from Tony and some blunt instuments only to have Ralph later insult his wife with a fat joke in front of a lot of wise guys.
Dangerfinder treasureseeker That's a big part of why Johnny was so offended. For Ralph to have so little respect after Johnny interceded on his behalf.
There's a scene in like S3 or S4 that ends with just a shot of Johnny smoking a cigarette, and then we hear funeral bells over top to start the next scene.
Ralph: Literally kills a woman for no reason Johnny: There are millions of dollars at stake, Tony Ralph: Makes a fat joke about Ginny Johnny: Again with the money! Have we no honor!
Johnny plays both sides like a French violinist. Smooth and graceful never nervous and so sure of his movements. A true art form to manipulate a situation like that
1:23 "New York and the Sopranos have long-standing ties, and that's not gonna change, not for you or anybody else." ... It certainly changed for Philly "I compromised" Leotardo.
Too much of a temper though. Carmine wanted to run a professional operation, without emotions getting in the way. John's reaction to the fat joke thing could have caused a war between the families, if Carmine hadn't stepped in.
Ralph- He’s not leaving me with a whole lot of options here John- Don’t talk crazy! If you want to commit suicide pills are a lot easier!! That response is everything !
A) She was a whooahhhhh. B) She hit me. C) It wasn't my kid. D) It was the coke. E) I never should've started with that shit. F) It's all over the place in Miami.
Love how careful Johnny Sack was smoking with his ashtray when he is sitting on his fake lawn, but as soon as he gets up and walks into the natural grass, he throws his cig butt like he doesn't give a crap.
Isabel Beckerman -- Yes, he did indeed quit smoking actually while he was still on the show. For the most part, these were real cigarettes but near the end of his time on the Sopranos, he managed to quit smoking and from then on they used fake cigarettes for his character.
know what's funny here.. when john goes to carmine and asks him to sanction the hit on Ralph... Carmine knows DAMN WELL who Ralph is. But when Ralph asks to switch families John immediately throws cold water on it stating Carmine doesn't know who Ralph is. After the way he played Paulie its just interesting.. Perhaps Johnny thought of Ralph as a possible threat and wanted to keep him out of his family.
I think you're right! Johnny was protecting his position. Johnny was the master Machiavellian in this show. A pure manipulator who can see through the fog.
Ralph has absolutely no idea how lucky he is that he caught Johnny in a benevolent mood - and the fact that Johnny's actually trying to save his life here completely goes over his head. Typical Ralph blaming his f-ups on anything but himself, so never taking responsibility. Maybe the big earner, but a real loose cannon which led to his demise.
Ralph makes a shit ton of money and goes to johnny for everything. It was easily worth it to keep a capable guy alive who gives you all the news of whats going on in Jersey.

Shagrat65 lol how many did have Johnny sact as a confidant and none of them ever reached Carmine’s radius lol Paulie Ralph lol 😂 Johnny was a smooth talking fuck who truly did and said things just to further his goals not a fuck about loyalty truly a chessmaster
He said it without the exckamation point, which gave the line extra strength.
@mcharleau admit it, the shinebox and varsity athlete jokes add depth as well.

johnny sack so smart, he used to tell Paulie Carmine thought highly of him because he knew thats what he wanted to hear, but to tell Ralph Carmine doesnt even know he is, he uses the Boss name to work on people
Johnny...? Talked to me about what?
Paulie was a real idiot.
The only reason Tony survived so long is that Richie, Ralph, and Shineboxotardo were never around at the same time.
Or Feech Lamanna. And even Furio wanted him dead at one point because he was in love with Carm.
They would have murdered each other also.

I felt like Johnny Sac was one of the most real portrayals of a true high ranking mobster in the show
@@JohnLutherable Carmine died of old age as a free man. John also died of natural causes but he did while wearing an orange jumpsuit.
Sacks is mostly portrayed as being frustrated with Carmine senior and being on the verge of whacking his boss. Sacks is very clever and can scope out opportunities. But he has severe temperament issues and if angered on issues of prestige can fall into spirals of unnecessary self destruction.
Man ralphie was crazy and scary sometimes but he was a funny character. I missed him after he was killed.

this show is a great example of how life is. nobody says what they truly mean and quite frankly these unwritten rules of how society is and how we should behave is pretty sad to me. we have the ability to communicate but we cannot speak our minds in most cases
I have found that speaking your mind does no good anyway, most people are mindless robots and will just stare at you like an idiot if you talk to them with any kind of knowledge or insight.
Startled by the soundless starlight
May dreams arrive when intended
Truth is, there are no rules. Never have been. So why put so much stock in it? Every manmade institution is just that-manmade. In the real physical world, a $500 bill is worth almost nothing compared to a bologna sandwich. We should all start standing up for what we really believe. The pain and embarrassment would be temporary, the positive change in the world would be permanent. Now go home and get your fuckin shinebox.
We can't speak our minds cause we are all different... so we all have different minds that don't see alike... so we have to find something that we can agree on... which aint much...
name spoken like a g.

Ralph wasn’t stupid but he had about the poorest judgment of any character on the show. He really did bring it all on himself.
Real psychopathic trait. Self destructive.
he probably got off on getting himself out of jams with his lying & manipulation too; his whole life was a prank call on someone
He might have thought that gangsters who kill people all the time, sometimes for purely personal reasons, wouldn't mind him doing the same to someone who was dead the moment she hit someone as connected as Ralph.
Too angry/no self control.
It was the coke.

Was Ralph the only mobster who made Ginny jokes?
The way John looks at Ralph with total disgust...priceless
I love how even when he’s chilling in his backyard Johnny is dressed impeccably
It’s amazing that Johnny sack was able to essentially defuse this situation when both parties were totally far apart in terms of negotiations
Sack always did this. True slimeball and they'd believe his every word.
