This show did a fantastic job of showing what Italians in America became. Moody yet inspiring, morbid yet amusing, serious and relaxed all at once. Goodfellas, godfather, casino all were great mob movies. But Sopranos really captured the essence of Italian Americans without trying. They used real Italian-American actors, and really nailed the things all Italians felt worldwide. I remember when Bocellis Romanza hit the shelves and everybody with a half a drop of Italian blood was playing that record. When it came on Sopranos I laughed and cried. The expressions, Phil's "a couple tree things," manicotti as a weekly staple, antepasto trays at every family gathering, knowing your second and third cousins, this weird cultural understanding that Catholicism is part of our heritage and also could use a major facelift in ideals, the little carmine opus dei thing, the conversation that carmela had with anthony Jr. About Italians fighting in world war two, cappodimonte, the cookies, the respect for appearance and always looking your best, the weird nicknames, the love for old music and movies, and paulies aunt/mom genuinely going "oh madonna mia" were things i saw from my mom and Nonna as a kid. There were moments on this show that really translated our culture. Obviously the murder and misogyny, maybe some of the racism too, contribute to a bad view of Italian ppl.
