I mentioned to my hubby about digging up my eco bundle. He asked me why I buried it and I said “to see what happens to it”. He just looked at me funny and said “you guys are weird”. 😂 I haven’t dug mine up yet as it’s night time here in Australia but looking forward to doing so tomorrow. Certainly hope there is something left for me.

I think I did the waxed leaves as child at school in the fall..we preserved really colorful leaves from maples and oaks, Seams like we used wax paper from our mother's kitchens.

I woke up this morning and jumped out of bed, (NOT my usual routine!!) and headed outside to dig up my treasure. After digging for some time I realized that sadly it was not to be found. I was really more upset about it than I should have been and reminded myself how well you took it when one of yours was not found for your very important project. I started watching your video and soon realized that I had forgotten that we had wrapped them in leaves and bark and rusty items and then tied them in twine! I had been looking for a pristine white fabric with navy stitching with perhaps a little dirt on it! I went flying back outside and sitting on top of the soil was my little bundle that I had dug up and not recognized!! This was so much fun, from the burying to the waiting and then to the reclaiming! Thank you Kathryn and yes please to more of this in the future!!

I rushed out into our woods and dug up my bundle a few moments ago. The jute twine survived, and I very carefully unwrapped it to find just four tiny fragments of cloth the size of my thumbnail clinging to the walnut shells! I am almost more excited than if the entire cloth had survived because some very interesting things happened. The cloth fragments have been oh so carefully washed with fingertips and are now drying. I am currently hatching plans for stitching! Thank you K3n for dreaming up such marvelous projects!

Dug up my bundle. Lovely juicy worms so my little fragile cotton book nearly did return to the earth. Gently washed it and teased the fragments apart. Only a little bit of my circle of writing but I will think of a way to save and protect what I have left. The worms were too happy to disturb so I returned them with the sticks and left over leaves etc to live another day. I was excited to finally dig up my bundle and relieved that a little bit is left. Now to get gently creative. Thanks Kathryn

I buried mine in the corner of the back yard, & went out last night with a torch (I’m in Vic, Aust) to retrieve it, but couldn’t find it. I had it wrapped with a rusty spike, & found it today, in the daylight. It’s got one little hole eaten into it, & black & brown bits (after hand washing), but it’s still quite whole. That whole project was fun - so thank you!
I’ve discovered that my favorite most relaxing, satisfying & enjoyable thing in this slow stitching so far is the meditation scrolls. I found myself making them wider & longer after the first couple, to make the stitching last longer, & finally came up with the idea of making a large rug out of them, stitched with some strips of other cloth, as a kind of crazy patchwork rug/quilt.
Thank you very much for your teachings, K3N! 🧵 🪡

Lovely, 2 years ago I buried 3 pieces for old sheets, 30 x the width of the sheet in our “ vild on purpose “ corner of our garden. Put a stick in the earth so I could find the place. After 9 months I wanted to dig up the fabric. I had not told my hubby than I have buried the fabric, so the stick was gone, and I couldn’t quite remember where the place was. So we dug and dug and sorry to say I never flounder my fabric.

Oh I really enjoy seeing these buried cloth tales. I know what you mean about making a video while you are stitching on them, it's hard. Your mind really wants to wander into a different world as you look and feel whats happened to the cloth, you imagine things that happened, or at least I do. Thank you for sharing these special times. I left a piece of cloth on my clothesline here and it was a thrifted piece of clothing that I deconstructed and did the 5 minute texture to it... my neighbor, a man, remarked asking what is that? LOL He knows me pretty well so I just said oh just one of my experiments on cloth.... he probably thinks I'm nuts, but oh well. Thanks for mentioning my 5 minute method. I've used it a dozen times this week for various projects. I find it works the BEST on linen for some reason.
The waxed leaves sound so interesting. I have stitched on leaves and it was so beautiful, I'd show them but they are home. I didn't use wax but the leaf as I recall wasn't totally dried out so it didn't crack. I'm going to play around with some wax now. Thanks for sharing and PS, I could hear Stella snoring! LOL ❤❤❤❤❤

Interesting that the coffee and rust thing works best on linen. ❤️

I rarely get attached to the quilts I make, but there are a few that I invest more of myself in. I still mourn one I gave away to a friend of my sister. It was a lap-size log cabin quilt I made with 1" strips, 1/2" finished, so there were a lot of cloths in it, a lot of variety and really beautiful. But when it was finished and my sister was visiting from out of town, talking about what her friend was going through, I just had the urgent sense that this quilt belonged to the friend. She needed it. Over my life, I've learned to listen to that urgent voice and occasionally, it leads me to do something others would say was stupid or an unnecessary self sacrifice, but many instances have taught me that over the long run, responding to the nudge is the right thing to do. So, I gave the quilt to my sister to give to her friend who I didn't know and lives across the country. My sister has since moved back to Seattle and is not in touch with the friend, so I have no idea what's happened to the quilt or the friend. I wish I did. I don't regret giving the quilt. I know it was the right thing to do. But I still mourn the loss of it. Watching this video and hearing you talk about the 13th piece makes me know you get it too.

Thank you Kathryn for another week of exploring and discovering. I went to retrieve my bundle buried under the lemon tree but couldn’t find it anywhere. We’ve had a very dry few months here in Adelaide SA and mice have eaten everything in the garden, even the chillies! So I guess they’ve either eaten the bundle or taken it for their nest. But I found some remnants of a hessian bag as well as a perfectly intact chain of stitching used to seal the bag. So together with a weather beaten leaf I had in my stash, I’ve managed to create something out of nothing and I love it. When life gives you lemons…….
I don’t know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but the quote is by Kahlil Gibran: “If you love somebody, let them go, for if they return, they were always yours. And if they don't, they never were.” Love, Cath

Wow! I had no idea what you were talking about when you refered to digging up the piece in time for the Solstice! I checked my viewing history and I hadn't seen that episode - I came late to the party and I watched all sorts - I discovered that after Openheimer I disappeared down a Christopher Nolan and Cilian Murphy rabbit hole 🤦 when I emerged I had missed the precursor to today's digging up! I have to say yes please to more of this ilk 👏 I mentioned alchemy previously and I can't think of a better word! It's truly magical to see this process and I live close to a beach and one part of the beach has lots of pebbles perfect for burying a piece - although for some odd reason it's known as the grassy beach 🤷 I found this genuinely enthralling and hearing your thoughts on your process is just wonderful k3n 😊 many many thanks for this journey into the mind of an artist - it's just so inspiring - big love as always from Scotland ❤️

I pushed back again fabric tearing.
Running stitch with a long needle, I envisioned a complete mess.
Ecodying I was good with, but leaving stuff outside, well I thought k3n a little touched.
    Now I do all three.
Now I have ideas for more.

I've just dug my bundle up and washed it. I am very pleased with the result. Managed to get some lovely prints of the raspberry leaves I had put in it. There are lots of rust marks and chew holes. If anyone is interested, putting cloth in the compost heap gives rapid results in days, not weeks. I've done this several times and have always been pleased with the outcome.

I’m fascinated by the 13th of your bundles going missing: in fairy tales the 13th is the archetype of Fate, and is always feminine. Think of the solar year which in actuality has 13 moons (feminine months) rather than the 12 that we have taken on culturally.
Or think of the 13th fairy in The Sleeping Beauty, the one who isn’t invited to the feast because there are only 12 golden plates. And there she is, Fate, who ultimately brings about the necessary transformation albeit circuitously.
I love the idea of the Missing 13th. I think of it as a terma which may be unearthed when fate allows (kairos=the right time) when it is found by a terton.

There is a tradition in Ireland (and Scotland also I think) of rag trees, also called holy trees or sometimes magic trees. Usually a tree beside a holy well, but lone hawthorns are also considered holy (or magic) trees, and sometimes these attract the tradition too. People attatched bits of fabric to the tree - just tied on with a knot - traditionally a piece of fabric from a sick person's clothing, but sometimes a bit of ribbon, or more recently sometimes a babies soother or similar little object, with prayers. The idea was that the prayers lasted as long as the fabric, or alternatively as the fabric rotted so the illness went away. These trees still exist and people still follow the practise. It would be unthinkable to remove objects from one of these trees, but tying bits of fabric to a tree or hedge in your garden and leaving them for some months might produce some interesting results, I will give it a try.

This project learns me more about me (myself). Digging up this 'find' and then carefully trying to get it 'back in the shape it probably once had'' , using water (and some baking soda and dishwashing liquid) so it can be 'preserved' ... this is one of the reasons why archaeology attracts me. (btw another reason is: I am curious to know how people lived in the past).
I was watching you stitching it on the background cloth, but I can not go on watching because I am itching to start this 'reconstruction' too! But I need to wait until it has dried. So I stopped the video, I'll go on later, when I can stitch along.

I had tried this a few years ago with disappointing results. I decided to try it again with you. Again, disappointing results - I just ended up with dirty fabric :) I had not used any rusty bits in my bundles and had not buried them (just left them out in the elements). I have now wrapped them around some rusty hand tools I found in the garage and buried them under some leaves in my wooded backyard. The ground in my yard is difficult to dig into (southeast United States). I will check again at the autumnal equinox in September.

I am wondering why you cleaned your cloth with soap. I was thinking the bi-card wash was enough. Also I am so sorry to see that some makers lost their buried pieces entirely. My piece hardly changed at all. It was up against my brick house with just a few dry leaves on it, so probably did not get much moisture. Also I wrapped it around a probably-treated wooden dowel. I am a bit disappointed due to so little change. I believe I'll wrap it around a stick from the garden and bury it in a place more likely to become moist, perhaps wait a week or so. So many variables! I do love the experimentation aspect of it even though it does not always yield a favorite piece. Your piece is lovely - looks like it was about to rejoin the earth but was diverted!

Yes it probably was, just doing what my Granny would have called belt and braces, and being conscious that some people might have higher standards of cleanliness than me 😉 and I am also sad for the people who couldn't find their bundle or had it disintegrate though it is part of the process, it's disappointing. I am pleased you are going to bury yours again. It's all about experimenting and I am so happy to see that so many are going to go further with it. ❤️
