Really nice touch that, in Mistborn - very minor spoilers - there's a discussion about the number 16 and how it has Power and how all these things in Mistborn are tied to 16. There's even one character who dismisses the whole idea as far-fetched and too coincidental. Then Brandon comes storming in and tells us about the 16 Shards. Hrmmmm...

    • @jacks1368

16 seems to be Preservation's "holy number", like 10 for Honor (10 Heralds, 10 Surges, 10 Essences) and 9 for Odium, and possibly 5 for Endowment. Unfortunately Brandon has said that not every Shard has such a number.

I'm 22, and recently began reading Sandersons novels more deeply, i was a bit late on it but had read all the Mistborn and after series long ago, like him i was reading countless books like Asimov and Sentenced to Prism, all the way over to Wuxia novels. I'm such a heavy follower of him now, because when i was 20, just two years ago, i finished writing my 9th novel. This video really resonates with me, because i am unpublished and in search of a publisher...hell i am desperate, like a person wanting fresher air.
i wrote a 27 chapter book for a god like man, merely as a backstory, to showcase who he was and how he came to be. In the other books, he is the ruler of what they consider to be the Hell of their universe, when in fact he is merely an isolated immortal scientist of his universe. i've hidden countless clues, ties, and hidden variables to create a mixed-multi-dimension much like the cosmere. In my latest 4 novels, that scientist is one of the gods under a fake name of Genome, whereas two other gods; Enigma and Spectre, are in fact the same person from my first series of novels over 440,000 words and 902 pages long and my deepest obsession.
You really inspire me to write, because i enjoy it, i do hope to find someone like you did who will help me give my words a tangible magic to let loose into the world like a myriad maelstrom of floating ideas that will rain from the sky. Inspiring others to be creative, and pursue albeit obsessively a world of their own creation.

The thing I like most about cosmere is that it's a shared universe, not shared world. There are plenty of people who do stories in same world, like for example B.T Narro has a huge list of books all taking place in the same world, which is awesome but it's far more daunting to get into than series that simply take place in the same cosmos.
With Cosmere you can just jump straight into The Way of kings and have a great time. The only book I felt like I ''had to'' listen to was Warbreaker, which I got into after listening to first 10 or so hours of Oathbringer and it was well worth it because not only is Warbreaker an enjoyable story but it also made Oathbringer better.
Right now I'm just waiting for Dawnshard to come out on audible before getting into Rhythm of War. Not just because RoW is about 60 hours long and I've got plenty of other things to listen to but also because Dawnshard is titled ''Book 3.5 of Stormlight Archive'' and I'll be damned if I pass the opportunity to actually experience this series in correct order.

Reading the Cosmere books and seeing how it all connects definitely brought back that feeling I got when I first started reading the Pern books.

Your point about the internet changing how the storytelling needs to introduce characters and backstory is really something I have not thought much about but really make sense. it allow things like your shared universe, or MCU and also series quite extreme on the "not holding your hand on anything" like the Malazan Book of the Fallen. It is interesting that when internet arose people said it would kill books, but it might have in fact given a huge boost to more complex storytelling.

Weis and Hickman also did a bit of crossing over. They had Fizban/Zifnab (I think he had a third name... Banfiz?) show up in three different series that appeared to be unrelated. I always thought that was fun when authors did it.

    My hero.
I'm doing something similar, but on a less defined scale. I want all of my stories to be within the same multiverse. So they're not super-interconnected, but there is the possibility of crossover by interdimensional travel.

So, Hoid is sort of like Stephen Kings Randall Flagg / Richard Fannin / The Man in Black? I’ve listened to all the Mistborn series and loved them (excited to start Lost Metal soon!) and I’m almost done with Oathbringer. Next up is Rythm of War. Loving every minute of it so far!

Also - since introducing my teenage son to Sanderson books, he's become completely obsessed with Hoid. Likely, his favorite fictional character of all time.

I was thinking about this earlier and I remembered Brandon likes magic, then I realized the cosmere is the magic the gathering multiverse fully realized in novel form. Since the magic multiverse doesn’t really work the greatest in book form but is perfect for the conceptualization of the game since it’s hard to get attached to conflict when your heroes can ditch whenever, the cosmere is basically everything about magic minus the plainswalkers and streamlined and refined
