Look forward to the rest of this I have a GSD that I’m sure due to my lack of discipline never got accustomed to being alone so when my family and I leave the house he loses his mind. Both crated and not crated. Really value your advice and appreciate the amount of content you put out.

So glad this popped in suggestions! We have a German Shepherd that developed anxiety from a solid moment of getting out of her routine. I normally fill her food bowl in the morning, before I go to work. It was only a meeting and her feeding was delayed 2 hours. For years now, it feels like she has to have permission to eat, and we have to sit with her. Both of us have to be home for her to chew on her bone. We left town for a night, had her a sitter, and she's be awful trying to get out of the house. She got better with that over time, but she gets particular sometimes on who will walk her (mostly insisting on both of us to walk her, except just me in the mornings). It's weird, it doesn't seem to me classic anxious behavior. We have created some of the boundaries you laid out. We give her plenty of exercise. The medication part is what interested me most, our vet insisted we medicate her before her visits. She's had 6 cases where we have medicated her. Like today, we had a bad storm, and needed to get her out to potty. We thought it might help, but we've decided that this is not what we want for her. Looking forward to learning more.

I'm a first time dog owner and your informative videos have been a godsend! I've been learning a tremendous amount about better ways to understand and communicate with my new rescue. We're working through some anxiety issues (he's especially anxious around bikes and skateboarders, and seems to have a newfound case of separation anxiety). I really needed this video, Thomas! Thank you for posting this and I'm looking forward to the rest! Really eager to learn about what's driving the process and how we can mold him into a calmer dog.

To owners who have dogs with severe separation anxiety >> you did NOT cause their separation anxiety, and selfishness definitely DOES NOT cause it either. These methods may work for dogs with very mild anxiety or separation anxiety but not severe anxiety. Look up Julie Naismith who really understands separation anxiety and does not blame owners for it. Hope this helps, her videos and book have helped me with my dog :)

This is an old video and I don’t think he is saying we are the root cause. He is talking about our common mistakes in treating it. Especially the trying to talk it out. I am getting that book though. The more quality info on this the better. His view on board and train is spot on. I try not to this unless the dog is being boarded for a reason other than training.

This deserves a lot more views..I am constantly depressed since I've had my dog. Because as you said, he is super independant, and I feel like he could very well live without me. And that makes me so sad because of all the love and money i put for him. I really need to let go and let him be..He became an anxiety ball, just like me.
But damn it's so hard to know what to do and be consistant when you're on your own. I wish I lived in US to follow your lessons.

We adopted a dog that was dumped in our neighborhood in March who is a German Shepherd mutt who has massive separation anxiety.
Two people who have owned wolf dogs in the past have come up to me asking if she's a wolf dog...we don't know, but she is very large for a female Shepherd, and does have some wolf markings/characteristics.
We are working on stay and place commands, but when she is in her crate alone, she goes into massive anxiety and will either shred the crate, or flip a solid steel crate to get out.
Her only goal in life seems to be my shadow and will do anything to make sure me, and my husband and kids, stay together at all times.

Tom! Do you have a video already I could check out, or maybe just advice on how to get a dog to relax around strangers? My dog is otherwise fearless, fine with fireworks, thunderstorms, being in a car or motorboat, good with all animals (dogs, cats, horses), is fine alone in the house - but she will not let strangers go near her. We've hired 3 dog trainers without any success, we've been bringing the dog everywhere, going to friends houses, to the office, dog parks, family get-togethers... it has been almost 3 years of that. What can we do to conquer the fear of people? She just skitters nervously away when anyone moves or gets off the couch. Otherwise a great, great dog!

I own a Doberman pinscher when he was a puppy he used to shake I visited him from 5 weeks old so just thought he was very young hence the shaking, I deposited him and he seemed to get comfortable with my and my family when we visited, but out of his litter of 13 before I picked him up when being sent videos he would shake at the vets, shake in the bath he was just nervous. For the first two year he barely exhibited any nervousness at home his confidence built in leaps and bounds. His now nearly 4 years old and in the last 6 months his been extra anxious his shaking again when we are out in crowds, his cowering from people, the other day he scared me as he was eating a child came near him and he growled his never had food aggression in his life, our cat died 10 weeks ago whom was here before him and since then he has been whining 80% of the day I have a vulnerable in the home who has cerebral palsy and is wheelchair bound who now is starting to feel uneasy noticing the dog is more on edge, but the more they go on the edge the more uneasy our dogs body language looks as I know the dog can sense the restlessness within his pack. I took him to the vet to rule out any physical and my vet looked at my boy like he was monstrous because I explained he had growled and snapped when a child went near him and his food, this made me feel disheartened as the vet did not really provide answers she just told me if it’s anxiety based then that makes for a dangerous unpredictable dog outside of his anxiety his super loving and he has done so well thus far I’m not certain what to do.

*I wish I could being my pup to you bc I hander gotten him to chill a good bit since rescuing him, BUT I can't leave him home alone bc he'll jump through any window, and also.... if he's on his chain outside and spots a wild animal, or a loud vehicle going by, he will run FULL FORCE and yank himself and a lot of times, to the point that he'll flip himself! I have a shock collar. ...which I've used it a couple times when i first got it years ago on the lowest setting and since then I've only had to use the beeper.... but nothing matters when he's on that chain and gets hyped up!!!! I pray you read this and can help me somehow bc in so afraid he's going to get hurt!! And he's never outside unless I'm out with him, so I try to hold him back if anything is around but if he's not at reach, obviously he runs! I have trained him a lot since getting him, but I have a huge feeling whoever had him before might have been abusive with him, but also I can def tell he was never ever trained with obedience i other than being potty trained! My pup is my baby and we're super close, but these are the two things idk wth to do about!!*

I have a Boston Terrier, Luna, and she is about 4 years old (I’ve had her since pup). She was raised with another older Boston Terrier, Ziggy (mom’s dog), and everything was fine for about 2 years. Then I move into a house while in college and can bring Luna with me because I have a yard and dog door. She would go to doggy day care about 3-4 times a week or have other friends with dogs come over to play along with daily walks.
Shortly after moving, I came back to visit my mom, Luna attacked Ziggy when Ziggy yelped... Could not get Luna to let go of Ziggy who did nothing wrong and would never hurt a fly. Kept the dogs separated from that point on (gate so Luna could still be ‘around’ Ziggy).
An incident happened later when I went back home from visiting my mom.. I am back at my house holding Luna outside out front and a dog not on a leash came out of no where and bit Luna on her butt while I was holding her... needed stitches and left a scar. I noticed she became nervous around dogs.
Then my mom was asked to take in Luna’s sister (same litter) and of course she did. Luna attacked her sister Hope when Hope yelped... and same thing, could not get Luna to let go of Hope.
Fast forward sometime, Luna and I are back home on a walk and a dog came out of no where while on our walk and came running up to us. I tried to grab the dog while kneeling on Luna because I thought the dog was nice and didn’t want Luna to start anything with this random dog but turns out the dog wanted to go after Luna. I was not going to let Luna get killed because it was a HUGE dog... I ended up getting attacked (almost lost my pinky and huge bite scars on my thigh) during the process.
After all of these different events, Luna will flip like a switch. Nice one min and attacking then next. I think that Luna does have hereditary anxiety (after having her sister Hope for a while). Luna LOVES people and she does not worry me the least bit around people but when she is around other dogs I do not trust her. I have tried to work with her as much as I can but I am at a lost because nothing is seeming to work for Luna to not flip like a switch. I want Luna to have other dog friends again and I want to trust my dog again... any tips or possibly any videos you have on this? I know this is a lot of information and I tried my best to condense it.. I just found your page and will be watching more of your videos. Thank you!

My pup has separation anxiety.. she's a rescue and had it so bad that one of the rescue places told the vet to put her down! Thankfully a vet tech stepped in and said she'd take her until a new rescue came to get her in two weeks. She's on a low dose of meds and I'd really like her to get off of them. Some days she'll be fine when I put her in the crate and other days she goes nuts the minute I shut the door. She gets a frozen Kong filled with various things to try and help her.. I'm working with her to get her to just chill and leave for various amounts of time (from what I've seen on numerous RUclips videos). Any other tips or ideas? Love the videos btw!

Ok so my little chihuahua latte injured himself early last week. The vet said he had pulled or strained his lower back and prescribed anti inflammatory and some pain killers. His still a bit sore but is finally starting to heal! However now a new problem has come up his starting to show signs of anxiety in the mornings...He’ll pant and shake and pace, which makes breakfast time quite stressful. So far the only thing that helps is bringing him into our bedrooom and playing some calming music. However even though this helps eventually his still not his normal chipper self... Any tips would be amazing as we hate seeing himself so worked up and anxious 😞😞

    Hi!
My question is about my dog eating stones. What I've tried is to tire him out by running and mental training, correcting him when he tries to go for stones to eat, being at the vet for a blood test to see if he is missing any minerals. I'm thinking about neutering him to see if it helps, but id rather not.
I've had dogs my entire life and he's well trained, he always listens to me, but when it comes to the stones he goes in this weird mode when he refuses to open his mouth, sometimes he just keeps the stones in his mouth for a very long time, and sometimes he swallows them. He usually throws it up, or poops it out. And sometimes there is alot, like two handfull.
We have a son who's almost 1½, do you think this can have anything to do with it? When he was a puppy he was with me at my work site alot, and there was thousands of tons of stones. He used to run around and play in it, but he never ate it. Can that have anything do to with it? It's a Staffordshire bullterrier. I know dogs can die from this, so i would really appreciate any help.
    Thanks for a great channel!

I've got a very anxious hound. I adopted her from the shelter and we know she was a stray for a while. She is very happy in her crate and typically doesn't leave unless I ask her to come out for a walk. She will not eat on walks or outings- she'll only eat in her crate. She gets very nervous outside (but she also loves getting to smell all the things) and if there's a noise or something moving that isn't a bunny, she goes into panic mode trying to hide. I usually try to keep her walking so she has something to do. Is that helping her or is there something else I can do to help her trust herself, trust me, and fully enjoy her time outside? She does LOVE dogs, so I'm trying to give her doggy friends and walks with other dogs go much better (her tail actually wags!)

Hi I’m macey, I have a 9 month old female pit bull. I was wondering if you could give me some advice on how to work on her. She is afraid of strangers. She’s fine around me and my family but soon as someone comes that she doesn’t know she gets scared. It’s not horrible and there’s no barking or anything but if they go to pet her she runs. And I’ve socialized her her whole life. When she had her shots at 2 months old she was going places and then she was fine. And then when she hit around 3/4 months old she started to become scared of strangers. When I take her out she’s fine until someone goes to pet her and she goes to the other end of the leash trying to get away. I would just love to be able to take her places without her being scared. And I want to put a good image for the breed and be able for her to enjoy attention from everyone. It would be great if you could give me some help!

How do I get my dog to stop depending on me? I have worked a ton with her but she came to me at 2 years old and we’ve made a lot of progress but she was severely abused and passed on from home to home because no one could handle her. With all the training I have done with her, she still always seems like she has the need to be everyone I go and would live perfectly happy laying in my lap 24/7 if I would let her, but of course that’s not a healthy relationship. She does really great with confidence building exercises but eventually resorts back to living on top of my heals. I wonder if she is one of those dogs that may never be completely “fixed” but managed.

I’m trying to save this dog I rescued and I’m having a hard time with training, but the vet recommends Prozac because she has aggression and has bit several people! I don’t know her history and is there any books or videos I can help? I don’t really believe in shock collars and many trainers believe this! I’m just frustrated in finding the right trainer that works!!!! Or techniques that works!

Katie Landis don’t use shock collars or any kind of pain inflicting “training” methods! They just cause further psychological damage to your dog. I would take your vet’s advice about the Prozac. You use it short term to help your dog’s training progress then usually they can come off it. Look for the words force free and positive training when looking for trainers. Good luck, your dog is lucky to have you! :)

Hello, I sent an email about my extreme thunderstorm panicking golden retriever asking for help or a tip (it's all explained in the mail), so if you can look at it and maybe help, I'd be really grateful, thanks in advance.

Please remove the " siren " sound from your intro and endings! My pets hate it and Id hate to miss your info because of that sound.

So much bullshit packed in one video ... A dog trainer right ? Lol 😝 What the hell is going on with those people to actually believe the crap he tries to tell us ? A dog is not a bunny - its a pack animal ! It needs the safety of not being on its own ! It sure needs consequent training, rules and exercises and those are the most important things but the healthy way of natural depending is so important for them to feel safe! I can see dogs get more anxious if they think they’ll have to protect themselves because theres noone there who protects him/her !
Very bad to say so !
