Level Right. It’s Important • Get Rid of Those Bad Habits

  • Getting a perfect or near perfect level EVERY TIME is easy-IF-you level side-to-side first.
    Maintenance of leveling jacks
    1) I change out hydraulic fluid in the reservoir every 2 or 3 yrs. It’s a PM item. It will remove condensation that can accumulate in the reservoir and in the entire system. Contaminated or old fluid will affect the performance of your leveling jacks. I’ve done a video on how to do this PM item.
    2) I wipe down my chrome jack cylinders with my 3M dry lube and paper towels before I ever retract them. I do this to prevent pitting and also dirt that can damage the wiper seal over time. If I’m parked for long periods of time, I do it this a month while they’re extended. If your parked in an area like the coast or beach, doing this once a week will protect them from salt damage.
    3) I grease my chassis once a year and while I’m at it, I give the zerk fittings 1 shot-no more-of my same chassis grease in all 4 jacks wiper seal. This keeps the wiper seals in top shape. I’ve done a complete video on how to grease your chassis yourself
    4) Once a year when I do all my winter maintenance, I get under the coach and clean and use a protectant on all the leveling electrical connections
    5) During the winter when in colder climates your hydraulic jacks may work a little slower than in the summer months b/c the fluid can thicken
    Summary and final thoughts:
    1) Concerning Snap pads, I see this question asked a lot. Personally, I don’t like them and I think they are a waste of money. And there not cheap. I know people buy them b/c they give the jack pad a larger footprint. The problem is they don’t address the length of extending or over extending the leveling jacks. You still should be putting blocking under your pads to prevent this and that also gives you the larger foot print your looking for. In my book everyone needs to put some type of blocking under their leveling jacks to keep the distance of the leveling jacks small. Doing this offers better stability and prevent the retraction springs in good health. So there’s no need for Snap Pads.
    2) Having a perfect or near perfect level is not only good for the RV and makes living in the RV a lot nicer, but it’s also good for your slides, your chassis and especially your absorption fridge if you have one.
    3) When leveling a motorhome never bring the rear wheels off the ground. That is where your emergency brake is. And even though you’ve seen people raise their front wheels off the ground with their leveling jacks it’s a horrible habit to practice for all the reasons I mentioned and shouldn’t be done. Leveling jacks are not LIFTING JACKS…they are leveling jacks. Leveling jacks are to be used for fine tuning to get level.
    4) I highly encourage you to have blocking like I have or something similar, wood and anything else you might need to level your RV properly and to support your steps. Keep it all in one place so it’s easy to find. Everything I carry is my Amazon Store if you’re interested.
    5) When were parked in the spring or summer when we run the A/C a lot, I’ll normally level the RV just slightly forward and to the drivers side so that the water from the A/C unit will drain to the front drivers side corner and down the hose I attached there so that water will drain to the ground and not run down my window or splash up on my tires.

You are very welcome Joni. I totally understand how you feel. I too lost my wife of 43 years in 2016. It was 2 years after I retired. We got to travel in our RV for a short time before cancer struck her down inside of 90 days. I am doing much much better now and she is always with me in spirit. Believe me it will get better and it will take time for you to feel even close to normal again but it will eventually happen. Before she passed away she told me to not stop living my life and that it must go on. So in closing "Be Well" my friend and you are in my prayers. Hi Joanie, I am sorry for your loss. I don’t know why this has hit me so hard. I loved watching your videos because Martin was so passionate and charismatic. I miss him. 😒 I had to go back and start at the beginning of your journey. I’ve been watching every video going back 5 years ago. Your first video is my favorite.

My Power Level jacks also level side to side. You just need to calibrate the system so it knows what side to side level is. When I picked up my coach, it was not properly calibrated and was always 4-6 degrees left. So I calibrated the system and now it levels almost perfectly every time.

I just found your website, and I'm sorry for loss. I subscribed to the channel, and I'm lost my husband to cancer 2016. So I know what you've been through. My brother lives with me, and we're going to sell the house, buy an rv, and travel full time together, and my first video of Martin was about how to insulate the rig, and I learned a lot from his video! I will definitely watch all of the videos, and keep the Amazon on for us late to find you, can buy and help support you! I hope you're doing well. Hugs sent!

Ok this is the first levelling vid that FINALLY included the reasons to level, and you've convinced me that all things considered, it's worth taking a few minutes to get it right. Overall, considering your points of the risks of doing it wrong, it sounds to me like it would be way better to not do levelling at all, than to do it the way most people do.
And I still don't see a real good reason to bother. Just get rid of the stupid fridge that's causing all the trouble. The rest of the advantages of being level aren't things that I'd ever notice. Water pooling in the bath or in the sink? A door that opens? I mean those just show what a perfectionist you are. I admire your attention to detail, defront, and desides.

100% agreement on getting rid of the finicky and dangerous absorption fridge. I remember early on in our RV research phase, seeing a video where someone explored an RV junkyard. There were two reasons RV's were in there: an accident or the fridge caught fire. I replaced our absorption fridge with a 12VDC fridge before we took even one trip.

Interesting that some Rigs systems can be so different. I find that it is best, in my 36' 35mq Challenger, most of the time, that I level front to back first, then side to side. When I do side to side first, a single jack will be off the ground and the Rig will jerk as the one jack with the most pressure releases to equal the pressure of its pair.
The more out of level I am, the more often a single jack will come loose no matter which way I do it. So, my takeaway from your video is that, when I am way out of level, I will use the tire ramping first, then block and use the jacks to finish the job.

On our crane we make or own pads and you need to make grain of the would don’t line up the grain has to be diffrent on every one and we round the corners so the corner stick out have tendency to curl up but if you round the corners off they will last a super long time and your right we are 4-5 times heavier the your rig and we glue and screw like you do the big thing if your using more than one piece of wood just make sure the grain is not lined up and they won’t crack .
