- Mario Kart 8 deluxe is definitely the best game in the franchise with 96 total tracks to race on. However, that doesn't mean it’s perfect. Many people may say mario kart ds is actually the best mario kart game because of its exclusive mission mode! These were 63 different challenges which were really fun and creative, some of which even being boss fights! So today I thought it’d be fun to look back on mario kart ds to rank every single mission!

The only problem I have with the fake item box challenges is if you use the Double Screen to drive, you can very quickly realize it is painfully obvious to learn where the real one is. Another thing I'd like to mention, is by using the Double Screen, you can pinpoint that “troll” coin on Figure-8 Circuit
That still is funny because it makes those who don't see it stupid

The missions were one of the best parts about Mario Kart DS, remember playing them all of the time. HOW HAVE THEY NOT RETURNED YET?? (Or even a new Mario Kart game at all for that matter)
Can’t forget the custom emblems too
The next Mario Kart game could have a story/adventure mode that would have missions like the DS ones and also normal races and battles, they could even introduce a kart upgrade system to make use of the coins (not affecting other modes).

Maybe there could be emblems that you unlock through challenges in-game.

Fun Fact: mkwii had something like ds's mission mode called "tournaments" and were only available when Nintendo's online service for the wii was up.
Mario Kart Tour also has Bonus challenges which are similar.
Mario Kart Wii was originally going to have an offline Mission Mode but was Scrapped, probably due to Time Constraints.
You can still play this mode with Wiimmfi

fun fact: Peach Gardens has the most instances of driving backwards in the series, doing so in three games.
For those of you guys who try to "erm akshually" this comment, I checked all of the mario kart wii tournaments and you don't drive peach gardens backwards for any of them, so don't worry you're still correct.
I remember having a lot of fun playing Mission mode in Mario Kart DS. I hope it comes back in a future Mario Kart game.

I know, I KNOW that Mario Kart Tour isn't a mainline MK game, but it's still cool that it brought back most of these DS mission types in one way or another. And great ranking!

I never noticed despite this game being one of my only ds games, but when using a star, the character does their 1st place celebrate animation. Neat detail that I dont think exists in the newer mario karts!

#63 gives me memories of me being unable to do it, because I'd played Mk Wii and 7 before it, so I didn't know that the mini turbo mechanics were different

I love the crossover 64DS has with some of the other DS Mario games. This game using its bosses, NSMB having some of its minigames...
One of my favorite parts of Odyssey Central’s videos is guessing what the “Are you mad that…” at the end of each video. I have yet to get one.

The worst thing about the turbo boost missions is the snaking boosts, meaning you can complete them all at the start but have to finish the race
I will say with the Mini Turbo missions is they basically forced me to learn how to drift, so while it's not best explain through the missions, I am glad it taught me how to do Mini Turbos as it allowed me to get pretty good at drifting in Mario Kart DS, 7 and 8 (never was good at drifting in Wii with the Wii Wheel controls though).
What I will say about 1-8 is that it’s an excellent tutorial for doing mini turbos, since most casual players won’t know about it. That’s how my dad learned how to do them for the first time.

In DK Pass backwards there is a shortcut which you Jump after the small hill of the Star item box
As a kid the shroom ridge red car mission always scared me, i found it uncanny how you had to race a random red car with no face and it looked nothing like the other enemies in the game

The next Mario Kart game should add these back in the form of Spirit Races. They'd give you spirits based on characters from other franchises. For example, a Sonic spirit has you race against an impossibly fast character.

Bonus points for 4-1 for probably being the reason there's an item box at the peak of DK Pass that always gives you a mushroom, 3 mushrooms or a star, even in normal races
After watching this video this made want to try and get star ranks for all the levels and missions. Because I was like “Shoot, I haven’t played this game in a while. I wonder if I ever completed the ranks” and I was surprised of how many Bs and Cs ranks I had. 😂

There is a way to prevent King Boo from stealing your coins, but this only works if you've memorized where the coins are and fast enough to get coins. So the moment King Boo stops spinning around you, jump into the lava. And if done correctly, you'll keep your coins.

What happened at the start of this video was kinda like how I had Super Mario Party for a long time but I just did the challenge road place and most of them were just beating the minigames normally.
I just finished 3 starring all the missions a couple days ago. This is gonna be tough, because i cant think of any of them being better than the others.
I loved this mode when I was young Ds was my first Mario Kart so the missions were good replay value.
I wish they would bring it back though, hopefully Mario kart on the switch successor “might” but I’m not too confident guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

One thing we can all agree on though is that the boss music SLAPS
6-5 (the sky garden one) always stuck out to me because it made me realize the shortcuts existed, I didn't know about the shortcuts there because I was a stupid dumb toddler when the game came out, so I always thought the mission was kind of cool.
also a lot of the missions can be trivialized with the bottom screen, especially the fib missions, since all of the fib's appear as red on the bottom screen.

I’m guessing I’m the only guy who doesn’t mind the standard King Boo design. Yes the Luigi’s Mansion one is more intimidating, but the normal one is more in-line with the design of the regular Boos.

Damn, thank you for making me aware of this mode, it's really awesome! I also noticed that the arenas for the two Bully bosses are based specifically on the All-Stars vesrion of the SMB3 castle stages.
