    Going thru this myself on my 98 RK. But oddly no leak. Went to drain my tank and had to constantly pump on the mighty vac to keep enough pressure on the diaphragm to keep it open. Once off the hose to the VOES and carb had fuel in it. Think I finally solved my lean issue with fat jetting and my occasional dexel pop. Thanks for the video.

    I’m 66 years old and been riding for 50 years. When I started riding, it was on Triumphs and I got into the habit of turning off my bike in the following way, every time; Key off, petcock off, stand down. I had seen what can happen to a bike if you leave the taap on and the fuel drains through into the engine, past the pistons and rings, and into the sump. NOT PRETTY! One or two examples of the kind of catastrophic damage thata can occur was all it took for us all to keep a sharp eye out to ensure that none of our buddies forgot to do this and of course, they did the same for me. It became so second nature, that I do it without thinking about it, but I STILL doublecheck that it’s off, after I actually get off the bike. All that said, what I DON’T like about these diaphragm petcocks is that they encourage laziness and that’s never a good thing with motorcycles. When I bought my 97 Sportster back in 2007, I didn’t think too much of it, but after the diaphragm started to act-up, I replaced the petcock with a Pingel one, which is brilliant. I wouldn’t go back to the factory setup for any reason.

      They do promote laziness. I agree, but with a little maintenance, they do work well. Thanks for watching!

    2000 harley flxts springer, Installed a new petcock from amazon. Bike off full of gas found a puddle of gas tue next day after filling it up non ethenol only
    It leaks tightened up the nut leaks more. I am confused
    Is it customary to add teflon tape to the fitting?

    • @WrenchesCorner
      @WrenchesCorner  5 месяцев назад

      You shouldn't need teflon on the threads. You have to have a screen in there. It has a plastic ring that seals it.

    Best explanation I've seen yet, only question, can a replace a vacuum type valve with an older, original style valve, plug the vacuum line, on my 1999 Sportster? Thanks, Dave

    • @WrenchesCorner

      Yes you can remove the fuel valve and replace it. But don't ever forget to turn your fuel off !

      @@WrenchesCorner thanks for your reply, I'm old school, I'm used to checking the valve anyway. It doesn't seem like much of a safety feature when it dribbles gas on your engine. I just bought a old 1999 sportster, the newest Harley I've ever owned, already outdated! Dave

    whats the best way to cap off the vacuum line

    • @WrenchesCorner
      @WrenchesCorner  Год назад +1

      I've had bad luck with vacuum caps disintegrating from dry rot. I like to use a short length of hose and screw a bolt in it.

    Would a leaking diagram cause a vacuum leak, affecting performance?,...🤔

    • @WrenchesCorner
      @WrenchesCorner  Год назад +3

      Absolutely! The fuel wouldn't flow properly and there would be a vacuum leak.

      Harley Davidson only. I don't buy aftermarket fuel valves. They are all made cheaply. Just go to your dealer. Thanks for watching.

    While riding about 60 mph the other day, my bike lost power and after i pulled over noticed that the fuel line detached from the bottom of the petcock. The fuel valve outlet on my Sporty detached from the petcock itself and is being held in the fuel line. Can that outlet be pushed back into the valve someway then reassemble the fuel line, or do I need to replace the whole valve?

    • @WrenchesCorner
      @WrenchesCorner  Год назад

      I would get a new fuel valve. The brass fitting could be pushed back in or tapped back in, but I would get a new valve so that it's not as likely to happen again. Think about a valve that points to the left or right so it's not always pulling down on it. Good luck, and thanks for watching.

  • @jimmyd868

    Do I have to use a petcock with a vacuum, or can I you use one without a vacuum. on a sportster.

    • @WrenchesCorner
      @WrenchesCorner  2 года назад +1

      That's a good question. The advantage of the vacuum fuel valve is not having to remember to turn your fuel off every time you turn the bike off. You can use a regular fuel valve without a vacuum actuator, but remember to cap off the vacuum line that was going to your original one.

    Any idea where to get an after market vacuum petcock for a 2005? I saw some on amazon but they are specified 95-01 , although they look exactly the same as mine fuel outlet to the left just like the one in the video, is the fitting the same on these bikes?, if not , can I just buy this aftermarket and use the diaphragm and build my old one with it.? thanks

    • @WrenchesCorner
      @WrenchesCorner  2 года назад +1

      I would get a new Harley fuel body. The aftermarket ones aren't vacuum operated. The one for the earlier years should work with your fuel tank fitting. The diaphragms are going to be different and aren't interchangeable. Good luck with your project!
