I miss owning a carbureted bike. It was a ritual... open fuel petcock, pull choke, twist throttle a couple times, turn on ignition, start... and the simplicity, my God how I miss the simplicity.
Whenever I have too tear into my M8, it's getting a carburetor.

Excellent Video ... I found all that out the hard way ... because the service manual doesn't really talk about the Vacuum Control Valve ... I think it was the cause of a gas feed failure when I was
riding in very hot weather ... You really cannot test the valve unless you apply vacuum, and the factory route the tubing takes is kinda wierd ... I did purchase a straight through, but I haven't
put it on yet ... good review about the straight thru valve ... Thanks ...

Those Keihin vacuum fuel valves abound on the major carbed brands too and are available in non-vacuum styles. They work well enough but I never run the vacuum style because I prefer manual control. If one fails and ya need to fix it quickly a Japanese dealer may have a match or close enough (bring your old one as a sample).
YMMV but all my personal HDs get Pingel fuel valves. My oldest Pingel had daily use from 1988 until the mid-2000s when it started to seep. I resealed it and it's still going strong. Golan are fine too but I ensure all my aftermarket fuel valves match for convenience since I bought the Pingel rebuild kit to service my fleet. (I haven't had to rebuild any other Pingels but the kit was cheap at a swap meet.)

  • @d1mennis

Doc, The diaphragm on my valve ('95 FLHTC) went bad 2 years ago (2020). The new valve was approx $94 at the time. I replaced the whole thing rather than just the kit because my screen was getting bad also. Another troubleshooting tip is to check the quality of the vacuum tube from the carb to the diaphragm. Mine was getting a little crispy.

Good advice…I just installed a Pingel on my 97 King tonight getting rid of a regular mechanical style petcock. I know this video is old but if you have a chance, I just rebuilt my cv to get ready for the season, the rebuild kit I got from Harley has a shorter accelerator pump spring than the one that came out…curious if there’s any variance between kits or what. I’m pretty well versed in carbs (4 bbls mostly) but I can’t really think of any reason the spring would be longer that was in there. I’m going to measure the compressed length but I’m looking at the longer spring will likely refill the pump reservoir quicker but potentially bottom out sooner giving less squirt…figured I’d ask if you have any insight. Thanks again and hope to meet you soon!!

I replaced the O-rings and the problem did not fix.
Not sure what to do from this point, they don’t make the check valve anymore.

Had the issue with my 06 sportster, fuel pourring in the vacuum line directly in the intake, big over-rich mixture, black plugs and run like shit.
I try to bypass the damn diaphragm, but it was not working well, so, for the price, i have buy a "Golan" (like Pingel but only better)....
On all my previous bike i had to shut off the valve, so i had the habbit to keep turning it on the off position (even the vacuum valve).

Question? I have a 2021 Ultra and last year the coolant was overflowing. Took to dealer and they kept it a week. They said it needed a new Pressure Cap which they supplied under warranty. I had no problems until last month and it started to overflow again. I replaced the Cap myself and it appeared to have solved the problem again. My question, are their any know flaws with the OEM Cap that you are aware of? I searched the internet with no good answers. Any after market options? Thanks in advance.

Weird, i have the 2000 Fatboy which as you know had the vacuum petcock and I seen the price of them and the rebuild kits and said I'll just try the Pingel, so I did, the 1st one I installed I'd always forget to shut the fuel off (spoiled with that vacuum) and come out to a whole tank of gas on the ground. Did this a few times. so I got another gravity fed petcock and not once has it leaked out if I forgot to turn off the valve. But its' what I'm sticking with cuz it works. And i have the deep jiffy stand too, the one that makes you think its going to the ground and catches you off guard occasionally. lol. But thats my story on petcocks and my bike, Thanks for all your videos Doc, you've helped me out quite a few times.

Dumb ass engineers should have put a drain valve in those bikes, but a few dollars would have had to be invested and they don't give a shit about the owners health and safety.
