I do almost all my maintenance myself because I enjoy the time with the bikes.I have 3. To me it's part of the bike ownership enjoyment. I own the proper tools and shop manuals. I know not everyone enjoys this aspect of motorcycles but for me it is rewarding. That's why I enjoy your channel and yes the do's and don't is great.I would love more. I would love to see more on the little mechanics tricks too, like you did in the past. Thanks Doc!
Totally agree and add some more accolades to your show & its presentation. A detail wash of your bike is a great way to discover that loose wire connection, the missing bolt or a nefereous leaking gasket when you least expect it, usually on a run when you can least afford the time to tend to it. Keep up the info-vestment, besides fresh oil its about the least expensive guaranteed resource for a schmick ride.Rubber to the road.
Keep em coming Doc I am always up for learning new things and different ways of fixing the bike I love. For me, doing my own bike work is part of the whole experience and frankly, Im a poor boy and can't always afford to farm it out.
Love these do’s and dont’s…..how about one specifically for Sportsters 2011 on , like me they’re gettin to that age where a trip to the doc needs to be avoided if at all possible. 🍻 cheers.
Doc........thank you, thank you, thank you for the drain plug sealant advice !!!!!!!! I didn't realize I've been missing so important for so many years. Please keep up with the Do's and Dont's
Never use pipe dope on drain plugs myself. The 0-ring is what does the sealing. Also, the factory service manual makes no mention of using sealant on the drain plug threads. Finally, torque specs for drain plugs are for DRY threads, use the same torque on a plug with sealant on the threads and you will over-tighten the plug.
A dab of dielectric grease on those exhaust bushings when you install them does wonders for making it easier to get them back on as well as it won't decay the rubber.
Years ago I had a fuel line pop off inside the tank of my 04 Road King due to previous owner using safety wire instead of a clamp on line to fuel pump. No fun breaking down due to someone being cheap.
Doc is correct ,recommenced hose clamps are called Pinch Clamps They are size specific ,you do need the correct pinch tool about $35.00 McMaster Carr is an excellent supplier for these items ,
This is very educational thank you for making this. I'm going to get a sportster some time this year and I want to my own work like how I work on my truck.
Keep them coming, people do not know how to read manuals anymore , or I should say take the time ! People want instant gratification now days , when you spend the money on a nice bike , do it the right way , thanks for sharing
Good points. I've also heard that with the screw type clamp, can crack plastic bungs because there isn't even force around the circumference of the clamp. The screw mechanism can focus pressure on the plastic 'bung', so to speak. Good vid. thanks sub/Likie
I use the proper-sized spring clamps on my fuel lines, petcock and pump. Always has worked for me. And they're easier to install than those worm clamps.
Excellent tips Doc, especially the hose clamps. If I may Sir, Harleys will absolutely vibrate battery cables/terminals loose, and you're right, no loctite. The best remedy is star washers. They're available in both internal and external stars, either works fine. Much better than conventional lock washers for the battery cables. Excellent video Doc !!!!
Thank you for your do's and don'ts I am a new rider and know nothing about working on a Harley. I will be working on my own bike whether I know what I'm doing or not. Your simple videos give me hope. Thanks Again Doc.
Excellent suggestions - surprised that some people do the don'ts! However as to hose clamps, in some of my non-Harley bikes, I have them on fuel lines and they work fine (in one case, since 35 years...) They do not get loose, and can be easily dismounted and reused on the road in case of ;problems, no special tools needed. That at least is my experience.
I always thought the pipe thread sealant was for the old plugs without o-rings. I haven't used it yet. I'll get some for the next service cause I trust your advice.
I think this is an awsome video, sometimes the simplest things are what we need. A video of what kind of torque specs, I know they can be different on all bikes, and yes what do we use loctite on and not. Thanks like the video
I’d rather send my bike to a trained professional for service and look around the dealership for a little while while it’s there but in todays world it looks like I’ll be in training to do some this stuff myself. I’m sure we all appreciate your knowledge, you haven’t steered me wrong yet so huge thanks for that!
Stellar idea, the more we can learn the better. I just started as a Jr. Tech for Harley Davidson, not too long ago. The more I can learn to become a better tech, the better we can service bikes and have happy customers!
Doc Harley.. Love the Do's and Don'ts videos. Never understood why people will spends thousands on a a vehicle and the cheap out when it comes to replacing simple parts or they reuse old parts.
Great tips Doc. Keep them coming please. Those worm-gear hose clamps are terrible and will bite you on the least opportune time and possibly strand you. Reusing gaskets is dumb - they’re cheap enough and give peace of mind.
Thanks Doc!!!! I know you were thinking of me with the fuel clamps.... but here where I live you can't find the crimp on clamps anywhere in any auto parts or hardware stores but I'll find some and replace mine soon!!! God Bless!!!
Please keep these do's and dont's videos coming. I enjoy watching them and even learn 1 or 2 things along the way. Knowledge is power and we all want more power..... don't we?
Doc, you da man I listen to you’re advise please keep them coming. Newbie to Harley Davidson and I’m glad that I found you. Thanks for your knowledge and insight.
