Quick Overview MX4SIO - For Use with PS2 and OPL (English, 2022)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 13 сен 2024
- Today's video is a quick overview of MX4SIO, where if you have a ps2 that can boot special build of OPL, then you can boot games off a sd to microsd adapter that is inserted into slot 2. The project does require some soldering, see link below for a reference schematic.
Enjoy!
Want to buy one? I may have some for sale, check my blog post here: versatile1.wor...

What better way to start the new year than with a new PS2 project? If you have done MX4SIO yourself, please let us know how you like it and hopefully the project will get better as time goes on. Enjoy!
Thank you for taking the time to make these videos for the community, grear work as always!
I've also seen they already sell the memory cards with everything soldered and everything, in case someone has no experience.
@@Angel-jv5zv good to know, where like aliexpress?
@@Angel-jv5zv The official adapter would be available when the software development has more progress and the hardware development is finished. Don't buy the unfinished adapters. Instead wait until it's finished and buy an official one to support the devs.
@@Anakin94 There's a video that has covered those memory cards, with no issues.
Yes, the best would be to buy an official one from the Devs.
what format does the sd card have to be in? this is amazing!
Dude, thats awesome! You did a pretty good job soldering too! I'm glad the PS2 community are getting some more attention. I really enjoy OPL!
PS2 is timeless, I really appreciate how the AetherSX2 emulator has come out, HDMI mods and now stuff like this, Sony needs to get their shit together and have good backwards compability running emulation on the PS5 or something..
sadly the ps5 can only ps4 and ps5 games only
Get a series X & ps3 cfw modded & your done . You can all play gen games like i did i even had ps2 modded & ps1
Better still, they could just release a PS123 for retro-gaming and universal compatibility. Sadly, Sony is run by whackjobs who will never allow it.
@@azurekite3870 the p4 has a hidden p1 p2 and psp emulator, i wouldent put it past sony to have that, besides when the p5 hack drops u should be able to play old disk on the disk version
This is something that could definitely be made into a PCB and 3d printed shell. Hmmmmmmm
Which the original MX4SIO *IS* !
China will copy this ,and then will sell on aliexpress
@@albertasandruskevicius9683 Yes... We know...
@@albertasandruskevicius9683 when that happens, everyone can enjoy its benefits. Although the creator should have the credits
Is that a PS1 memory card you used?
Yeah....Any card will do. Only that there are contacts is important. But 2MB/s is faster than USB/Ethernet but still kind of a joke and only for PS/2 slim. The DVD Drive is 3x faster and HDD is far away....
@@AmstradExin I think PS2 has 100 Mbps Ethernet which is pretty fast, 2x faster than its 4x DVD drive.
@@47KRoman Ah! You are right......But still USB and Memory Card slot.....too slow
@@AmstradExin That is the CURRENT speed, because 48MHz-Mode doesn't yet work reliably, whereas 24MHz-Mode DOES! ;)
On another note: I *think* that the speed could be even faster on DECKARD-PS2s, utilizing the PPU-Side for the transfer, but that needs quite some work on the software and we are just at the beginning, except for BDM being quite evolved.
@@tnaplastic2182 I didn't expect this to be such a rabbit hole....
PS2 modding is getting better and better
No PCSX2 is getting better and better 🤣😂😂
thank you for making this video. i followed your instructions and also had 2 tries before i got it to work. i used an sd module instead as its easier to solder vs the sd adaptor
if this fixes the fmv then it'll be really cool anyways thanks versatile as always ❤️
Would like to test it out but unfortunately I'm not really good at soldering, hoping for Chinese manufacturers to provide SD to PS2 memcard adaptor for that.
Indeed!!!
Just found someone from Spain selling these on eBay
@@timsievers2067 priced up/reasonable?!
@@castries $21 usd
Where can I find these listings? I've tried searching on ebay
Dude I'm so glad u were able to get this built. I don't understand how this is not talked about more. I speak Spanish so I understood perfectly all the other tutorials. The comparison vs the USB slot is a huge difference
Probably because it's much better to use a raspberry pi via the ethernet port/network adapter or a hard drive.
Thanks for hooking me up with those MX4SIOs, they work great!
i did mine too 3d printed the shell and made a custome circuitboard and it worked amazing thank you :)
i love all your ps2 videos. been watching for years. this is another really good one thanks.
Wow I never thought you could just plug an adapter card on the ps2 men slot with just a resistor amazing thank you
No shame for the soldering, some of the most genius electrical engineers could not make a clean board.
I’d love to see a portable PS2 made using this! Most use USB and deal with the slow speeds. I think a couple use a built-in raspberry pi as a “game server” over the network interface. This method is nice and compact, and would speed things up a bit.
SMB/LAN doesn't work with playing online though... MX4SIO DOES!
Network load is as slow as USB basically. It would waste power by running a Pi
@@Vans_WW??? SMB is WAY faster than USB on the PS2!
@@tnaplastic2182 While maybe true in benchmarks, what you get is still slower than the DVD drive speed and only a margin faster than USB. Network loading becomes bottlenecked by the CPU in handling the network interface. Even in best case scenario (copy only) it was recorded to be around +- 3.3 MB/s. During gameplay, this penalty can be higher, at which point you are 1:1 with USB transfer speeds. Not enough to alleviate FMV stutter in some games, and not enough of a noticeable improvement over USB to consider sacrificing power to “run a raspberry pie server”.
Benefit is in storage size by hosting games on a server. Just my 2 cents.
@@Vans_WW Yes, 28MBit/s on a video on my channel... I know... ;)
Yes, the bottleneck is the IOP.
"In best case scenarios..." You forgot to mention "in-game", but it seems obvious that you talk/write about that!
UDPBD is less dependent on the IOP and could yield 12.5MiB/s (100MBit/s)!
Access times are faster on any storage compared to discs though and that IS very noticeable!
I agree, that "SMB" puts a lot of "load" on the IOP and that it can even dive a game's performance BELOW that of any of the other devices!
That usually doesn't occur on FMVs though!
It rather sounds like your setup (or the setup where those issues were present) is running in 10MBit/s mode!
Just found your video .. whoop I’m so doing tomorrow when my son Phoenix falls asleep 🤟🏼
Good luck!!
I have been wanting to do this for a while now. Good to see in english
Yes, glad to make it myself too.
Thanx master ♥️
Sounds neat! Thanks for this video man :)
This is amazing. 2022 and we still can see another cool stuff that came out for PS2! Such potential, still not exhausted after two decades after release, PS2 continue tosurprise me time and time again!
I have this thingy and make 256GB mSD card from Verbatim to work, loading speed is great but compatibility is poor at this moment however I didn't notice hanging or anything, if the game will start it'll work well. :D
I 100% want to buy one.
Great tip on the Pademu. I had this problem with MvC2 and this fixed it right up!
Nice work!
Damn that a brilliant method to overcome the slow usb on the ps2 slim
Dude it’s awesome you made your own brah
This is incredible.
Awesome. I just might pull out my old ps2 for this.
beautiful work i love it!
Man this is so awesome.
You could do it internally. Nice video mate. Thanks.
That is NOT the goal of the project and it would need more additional Hardware.
@@tnaplastic2182 It's technically easier to do... RELAX it's just an idea...
@@vaaz_rodriguez I AM relaxed?! 🤷♂️
What about it is "technically easier to do"?
This should be a great alternative for those who can't use hard drives or USBs drives . Does it work with PS1 and PS2 multi CD/DVD games? Because that would make or break the project.
Ps2 games only. Multi disc i don't see it wouldn't, just load the specific disc with save game and continue progress
@@TheOriginalVersatile Thank you for the answer. It's a shame that PS1 games are a no-go for now. Oh well, I guess it's better than nothing. Happy new year!
@@krazycharlie Well... Support for MX4SIO can be added to POPStarter! ;)
Clever bastard wow. That's a compliment by the way
I am intrigued... Love a good soldering project too.
I think you saved a lot of hdds getting from scrapped with this one
Nice. What would be good though is a permanent cfw bios flash to get rid of all security checks on Bois chip via update plenty of dumped biases out there to use .
Unfortunately the BIOS is a read-only chip.
The closest we've currently got to a software solution is Mechapwn.
Otherwise, if you're handy with a soldering iron, a modchip is the way to go.
How's the speed compared to the USB speed and network adapter hdd speed of PS2 games?
Faster than usb but slower than network adapter
cant wait for afull guide
Short answer is assuming you have a modded ps2 or a way to boot OPL, then on the SD card make a folder called "DVD" and put all your iso files in there. Use a program like OPL Manager V21.8 to rename the files easier and scrape cover art.
I found someone on eBay selling mx4sio this project looks interesting
hey..his back!
Think about internal-izing your sd card reader. Use the card detect pin on some SD readers to disable the memory slot. Or just don't use that alot when loading games from the SD card. I'll have to dust off my PS2 to try this.
Ps2 king RUclipsr like him
I'd be down to buy one, Hopefully someone gets on it, could be some good extra money.
Wowww! Does fmv stutter fix? Thanks for this men. Love the ps2
I need to test more games that work, but so far no.
@@ProjectPhoenixMedia its okay sir. You did a great job so far 👏👏 gonna buy that stuff someday
There's an eBay listing for them from a seller in Spain (international shipping)
Update: Sold out
Do the games load just as fast as the FAT PS2s with hard drives?
Internal hard drive is faster for sure
@@TheOriginalVersatile what about fmv skipping?
@@TheOriginalVersatile what about smb, is that gonna be fast as smb?
It is slower than smb but quicker than usb. Although SMB is quicker, it does have more hassle in setting it up.
@@ProjectPhoenixMedia SMB also has a higher chance of failing due to internet dropouts / slowdowns
Congratulation!!! Awesome!!!
ohh this finally happened huh, i remember reading into it, wonder if it will ever be implemented into the master build. i remember hearing this was the endgame for loading games on a slim ps2^^
I think in long run yes, but mx4sio is still very new from software standpoint from what I read and discussed
way cool project. Guess I will give it a go.
I am sure soon we will be able to buy ready made version from EBay
Hopefully we can just simply buy the thing and not have to really do much work, I would so buy one if it does get sold.
I've been following this for two months, and yes, I'm waiting for someone to release it
I'd love a pre-made solution too waiting for that day
Me too, waiting on aliexpress.
Awesome video. I just finished doing something similar with FreeMCBoot and a hard drive, but this is much better because it's swappable and quieter. HDD is a bit noisy because I haven't found a solid state that works with the PS2. Just curious, does the donor memory card need to be a MagicGate card? I could not tell if it was MagicGate in the video. I know FreeMCBoot requires it.
Donor card is any ps1 or ps2 card and we reuse it for the contacts. Doesn't care if MagicGate or not
Keep going...
very cool project, I guess you can just mod the console itself and add sd card holder
It's possible I know a guy on reddit who did an internal SD card mod
Only for ps2 fat not slim
wayyy faster for ps2 slim users.
Still best to go with the ethernet adapter for the fat model but nice job!
Great!!
I'm thinking about making a more polished, donorless version of this with a custom PCB + a SD card slot and a 3D printed shell. Where should I post it when I'm done?
We can post it on video notes when ready
If you make any more to sell please consider international shipping. I'll buy a bunch of them (I'm in Australia).
Check ebay, good quality ones are being sold there.
gracia por el equema del adaptador pero una cristica lanzate el juego por USB en open loader se nota : USB GAMey tambien por el cable USB que se ve contetado al PS2, cuando se lanza por el adaptado dice BDM Game.
The Game.
Nice , I want to do this. Just dont have the time yet. would pay for one ... but I it would be fun to make my own too. now that I see that works so much better for ps2 slims.
Curious if one was for sale, what is a reasonable price (before shipping)?
@@TheOriginalVersatile $28
@@TheOriginalVersatile 15$ (currently) in a good quality. Bulk... Just the adapter.
I made some if you want to buy
@@anyaimlle Cool thanks $$$ .. :) your work looks clean.
Pretty neat thing, but I personally would rather network load from a USB HDD. 2tb Drive connected over USB to a raspberry pi 1 running psx-pi-smbshare and connected to the PS2 over ethernet. It's a bit clunky but it allows much bigger storage capacities for much less money.
As I said before, this is a neat niche solution/project, and I totally agree your setup is probably more practical in broader sense. Keep it up, I love the psx-pi-smbshare project.
@@ProjectPhoenixMedia I think for people like me with the slim the only good option was network. So this memory card mod/replacement (hopefully someone or China makes custom pcbs for this)allows us to have a easy solution that doesn’t require much
Memory card port is faster than USB1 ? who would have thought ?
Yea I was surprised to hear that too but here we are!
I'm curious if I could 3d print the shells for these and manufacture them on the side for people to buy. If anyone is interested maybe i'll create the stl files.
Looks like a very simple PCB could be designed to mount a SD card slot plus the resistor(s). Order a pile of them through one of those cheap Chinese companies then sell them with the parts as a kit. If you really want to go into production on kits and ready to use ones, learn how to make a multi cavity silicone mold and do urethane resin pressure casting.
i need to learn how to solder now
Still hoping for the PS2 hacking scene to make native ps1 backups play possible.
MechaPWN
Doesn’t work ? I could swear in my hd on ps2 I’ve got a few psx games loading ok , should check out because I’ve been mainly playing dreamcast lately
@@federicomori1560 That is an emulator, pretty much an early version of what Sony used for PSP, and then there is a homebrewed emulator as well. OP means running PS1 ISO's through the PS2's built in PS1 hardware, not emulation.
I had this idea once the infinity memory card came out for the ps1 and people called me stupid and said it wouldnt work. I knew I should have tried my idea. Bah. Stupid people
Thanks a lot for the video ! Is there any game compatibility list ?
There are but nothing official posted online. I'm trying to get the dev group to make an online google spreadsheet to assist with the information.
@@ProjectPhoenixMedia Great to hear ! Thanks again.
I've seen something similar but they wired everything differently then this.
What BT adapter do you use? Btw I hope this SD mod gets mainstream, so that we can order it from everywhere.
Check the video he uploaded before this one, he shows which one it is
It's the UnoRetro one. It's currently sold out
That looks too experimental to me, in the end I ordered the one from Brooks and it arrived this week.
It works perfectly, vibration and all, and I cannot sense any input lag with my ps3 controller.
REALLY?! the memory card is faster than USB? is it fast enough to stream cutscenes? this is gonna make a huge difference for ps2 slims
this is amazing!
Depends on game but overall yes.
@@ProjectPhoenixMedia that's amazing, I can't wait to give this a try, i'm so excited for a new exploit
Looks amazing, but since I'm not very used to soldering, I'll think I'll wait somebody to actually make and sell them, if that happnes.
I was thinking of making some more out of a few extra ps1 and ps2 memory cards that I have. It won't be as clean as an official pcb with 3d print case, but I think there is some demand xD
is it faster than SMB loaded games or at least have a differing compatability in that some games that don't work with SMB will work with this? and if so, is it closer/a replacement of USB loaded games?
YES, some games which don't run via SMB, or have problems because of the IOP running on 100% via SMB occasionally, run better via MX4SIO.
The bandwidth is slower than on SMB, so an FMV *might* stutter via MX4SIO, while it doesn't via SMB.
It is way better than USB in pretty much any case/regard.
How do load times compare to a SATA hard drive with the network adapter? I use the independence exploit to load HDLoader FP 0.8c from my main memory card, but if this is comparable, it might be a good alternative with my slim.
Internal hard drive is way faster for sure. Memory card interface has about max speeds of 1.8 megabytes per second is what I was told
While this is cool as shit, I'd like someone to make a PS2 ODE (Optical Drive Emulator). That way you could you still load games off of an mSD card, but you'd be replacing an aging DVD drive in an older PS2 and games could still be played (and it'd be simpler and cleaner even if soldering is required internally)! The PS1 has one as does the Dreamcast and GameCube... I'm sure someone'll figure it out for the PS2 as well!
Maybe the makers of GCLoader could do something like that, it be cool as hell
I bet the cheapest price is 300$ for that ODE mod. Last i checked the PSX version cost around 200$.
2TiB/2.2TB should be the maximum supported size! ;)
Yes but how cost effective would that be lol
@@TheOriginalVersatile Correct!
Fortunately MX4SIO and the cards are plug&play and hence using multiple old cards is working out as well! 😀
What wattage soldering iron did you use?
Does anyone know if this would work with the memcard pro?
Don't think so
Can you have multiple games on the SD card and have artwork?
FYI, I just tested art work and it does work. Yes, you can have multiple games on the SD card.
can a female usb connector be soldered instead of a sd card adapter? to use an external hard drive through usb, and would it provide the 5 volts needed to power a 2.5" hdd?
Круто! Очень полезная разработка, молодец!
I wish there was something like this for the PS1
Yea me too, for now I use tonyhax
Wonder how long it will be before we see a fully reworked and integrated assembly from China. I’d pay $40-$50 for it
Yes for sure that be awesome, not sure when though.
We'd recommend to get the original version or at least one which was locally produced instead of shipped around the world. ;)
~15$ seems to be a reasonable target
@@tnaplastic2182 yeah 15 $ range would be perfect ...would definetly not pay 50 from a chinese seller..

You can buy these pre-made on Aliexpress now.
Hey, I was wondering if you could help me with something. So I updated OPL to the latest version and I noticed that the "Check game fragmentation" option is gone, now I can't play some of my games because it says that they are fragmented, if you know a way to fix this, please let me know!
Also I'm using an usb HDD to load games.
Not sure why it's gone, told to copy all files to pc, format drive, then copy all files back
Gonna sound super nerdy but can this be used with a soft modded PSX DESR (the ones that only cam out in Japan)? Thanks
I don't see why not but good question to ask on the mx4sio forum
@@TheOriginalVersatileI'll try my luck asking the guys. Thanks man :)
Wouldn't it be easier to just order some new boards? I'm sure you could fab your own from one of those services online.
Agreed but I'm a total newbie when it comes to pcb design. If it exists, then OK if be willing to send it to an online service
Do the Sd card still work if you format it NTFS format?
Sorry must be fat32
Is it posible, if i just solder a usb port or otg wire, so i can connect an external hard drive instead a micro sd card? Plz respond
The MOST important question: Can it run Klonoa 2 without errors? Cause that game is notoriously hard to run without a functioning disk drive.
I think I have Klonoa 2 PAL somewhere and can try it when I find it (if that would be of use).
where is the soldering tutorial for this??
I have a quick question. Is it possible to go back to the game selection screen with my MX4SIO while in game?
No need to restart ps2 basically or maybe see if IGR works
at the end of the video, it sounded like the game's audio was cutting in and out, maybe it was from the camera's mic as you were talking?
Possibly or something going on with audio editing software. I'll keep an eye on it in future videos

Hello i have 2 questions:
1. Which PS2 Slim Version did u used ? Does MCSX4IO works with 90001 version using Funtuna?
2. How to setup PS2 Console game with upsclase configuration using LED monitor ?
1) I have tested on slim 75001 and 90001 model. MX4SIO works well on both versions. Although I use Fortuna rev 2, Funtuna should work 2. 2) That I have no idea, unless look into GSM, which I don't really use.
