    Clearly a Win for Queen on this one :-). Not because Metallica did a poor job covering -- it was very faithful and very rockin', and if you didn't know the original it would be considered a very strong cover! But for the reasons you cited, Nick, and also because NO ONE IN 1974 played any songs like this, it's an easy win. First Thrash Metal record ever recorded! At least, it seems so.

    I was and am a huge Metallica fan. The 1st time I heard Stone Cold Crazy, it was the b-side of the single for Enter Sandman, so I didn't realize it was a cover. I was 16 when the black album self titled Metallica came out. I remember showing my friend the new Metallica song, and he's the one who told me it was a Queen cover. I had no idea. Like you said, no internet, so it was years later that I finally heard Queen's version, and I was blown away by how heavy / fast it was, especially for 1974. Blown away by the speed but then the more melodic vibe to it. Metallica just can't capture that but they made it their own. I love both versions. I go with Queen also because their the originator and especially it being 1974.

    • @mitchand9

      There's a distinct difference between a fast song and thrash.
      This is NOT thrash. Understand the difference.

    • @GilesMcRiker
      @GilesMcRiker 2 года назад

      @@mitchand9 actually, there's nothing problematic with his statement and it is completely consistent with what is written in the Wikipedia entry on Thrash:
      "Among the earliest songs credited with influencing future thrash musicians was Queen's "Stone Cold Crazy", recorded and released in 1974. The song was described as being thrash metal "before the term had been invented".[16]"
      If you're going to speak with such smug authority, at least make sure that what you're saying is 100% correct, otherwise you just come across as a jackass

    • @Sneak65
      @Sneak65 2 года назад +16

      @@mitchand9 It is widely considered a precursor to thrash metal. But you are correct. Speed is not the defining characteristic of thrash metal. But aggressiveness and speed combined does define thrash and Queen's version of Stone Cold Crazy fits that definition. Once thrash hit in the early 80's the sound continued to evolve. Another song by Queen called Dead on Time would be a fast song that would not be considered thrash. SCC is fairly credited as belonging to the root of the genre.

    Great reaction and comparison, actually the live version from Queen is even better then the studio version. You should check out the live version. Stone Cold Crazy - Queen live at the Rainbow 1974. It is amazing when you think that Freddie Mercury started writing this song in 1969. Metallica did a great cover of the song, it is actually one of the better Queen covers you can find. I also like the fact that Metallica always pays homage to the bands that inspired them. There is actually a lot of Queen that you can find in Metallica. Some other interesting Queen covers from some of their heavier songs you can check out is Innuendo - Queensryche. Tenement Funster/ Flick Of The Wrist/ Lily Of The Valley - Dream Theater, It's Late - Tribute to Queen with James LaBrie, John Bush, Scott Ian, Lemmy Kilminster.

Here with Queen ... any cover version by any band doing Queen have already lost before hitting the first note....Freddy Mercurys vocals cannot be bettered and the band with Brian May's unique guitar sound cannot be replicated. It was no contest before you even started Nick. Lol . Loved that you did that. Maybe there are other comparisons you may find of interest to do ? Byee Jim X

The interesting thing about Queen is that while their early music was accused of being overly ornate, when they wanted to be simple and to the point, they were really masterful at that as well. We Will Rock You doesn't even have any instruments other than the guitar solo which comes in towards the end of the song

    Not even a contest...Queen!
    Metallica did an excellent job paying homage to the originators (as with most of the covers on Garage Inc. - in fact, I think their version of Astronomy beats out Blue Oyster Cult! Whiskey In The Jar is on par with Thin Lizzy's)
    One could argue that Queen's version was thrash metal before that term was ever coined! (Much like the song Sheer Heart Attack was punk...before punk) There's a reason why Brian May is held in such high regard as one of the greatest guitarists - the man can pretty much do whatever style he pleases. No comparison with Freddie - he will forever reign supreme. And that rhythm section: John Deacon > Jason Newsted (I think both are excellent bassists); Roger Taylor >> Lars Ulrich - honestly Lars is hardly fit to hold Roger's sticks. For me, Lars has always been a sloppy drummer - not horrible - keeps time well, but his technical skills aren't even close to Taylor's (AND Roger's singing a killer falsetto while playing...so significant bonus points!)

    • @mvunit3
      @mvunit3 2 года назад +1

      I'd say Lars "Technical Skills" were in "...and Justice for All", then Bob Rock ruined his progression as a drummer by asking the band to play simpler, which then made Lars Lazier in future albums (imo). That's why I left Metallica behind and went in search for Thrash and other Metal to satisfy my cravings that I got from Progressive Rock previously.

    There is another album of cover songs you might want to check out. In 2004, on the 30th anniversary of their first album, Rush put out Feedback. This consisted of covers of songs that had influenced them in the 1960's, plus a few others from that era. There was "Summertime Blues" (Blue Cheer,The Who), "Heart Full Of Soul" (The Yardbirds), "For What It's Worth" and "Mr.Soul" (Buffalo Springfield), "Shapes of Things" (The Yardbirds, Jeff Beck), "Crossroads" (R.Johnson, Cream), and more. One of the most unusual covers of "Crossroads" is by bassist Jeff Berlin, (who played with A.H. in Bruford) on the 1986 album Pump It. He plays all of Clapton's solos on the bass.

    Never heard Metallica’s version, I’m not a Metallica freak. But Queen’s version I grew up with. I actually read Lord of the Ring trilogy (that is actually 6 books, 2 per book) listening entirely to Queen Queen II, and Sheer Heart Attack…

    hmmm... I have heard the Metallica version before... I think they (Metallica) are too drum forward. and the guitar on the Queen version has a richer overall sound to it... and it flows better. And of course, there is no comparison to Fred's voice. So for me Queen wins on Drums / Guitar and Lead vocals. But hey, you can't fault another band for trying.

      Agree, for sure, but John Deacon's bass gives the Queen recording an incredible depth, without too much "punch". It's the reason I think the Queen version sounds fuller & warmer(? - stone cold? WTF). LOL

    Whew! The cover is just not my cup of tea. There's a difference between a little bit of a group's own spin and turning a song into something that they would have done. Best covers IMHO: Nirvana covering Bowie's The Man Who Sold the World and AFI's cover of the Cure's Just Like Heaven. And both Bowie and Robert Smith liked them.

    Imagine being a 13 year old punk, and going out and buying Queen’s ‘Sheer Heart Attack’ album for the song ‘Killer Queen’, and then playing the album and hear ‘Stone Cold Crazy’ for the first time. It completely blew my young, under developed mind! I like Metallica’s cover, but Queen’s original will always be the only one for me.

    Grew up w/ the Queen version, so i knew it was a cover when Metallica did the song. Good cover, decent...but Queen is so much better here. I'm a drummer and Roger Taylor's drums sound much better...don't like the sound of Lars' drums here, especially the snare. Freddie...better vocals. Brian May's guitar tone....awesomeness and the underrated, much maligned Deacon on Bass. The original rules the day here.

    Metallica's cover was on a compilation album done by Elektra records called Rubáiyát: Elektra's 40th Anniversary. It may have been on a later covers EP, but that's where it originally came from, as I recall. The Queen one is better, absolutely! • @MattKrogmeier
      @MattKrogmeier 2 года назад

      @@mvunit3 According to dUg - this first track is the ONLY one without some signature harmonies. It also sounds to me like Ty's gone back to that early tone, at least partially. My wife commented that it reminded her of a combination of Pearl Jam and Jimmy Page - she had NO idea that Jeff Ament had basically credited grunge to King's X, or that all three members were thanked in the credits for "Ten."
