    Went to see Metallica last year and they were amazing. They admire Queen a lot and they are really inspired by them. But still, Queen is a band with songs which is EXTREMELY difficult to play and sing. Brian May is an extremely talented and technical guitar player which James and Kirk can't match sadly. But the way they're honouring Queen is truly beautiful. Stone cold crazy is a hard rock song, and it fits perfectly for Metallica! I liked it altogether 😍

    One of the few Queen covers I like. Uh, you're wrong Alex. Freddie says, "my rubber tommy water gun." Those are the original lyrics. His enunciation is way better than Hetfield. Hetfield didn't learn to use his voice effectively until the early 90s (when he took vocal lessons) and by then he was an alcoholic with anger issues. He's sober now and less angry due to his wife.

Even Judas Priest were not at the speed that Stone Cold was performed. It was not like Queen were doing a thrash cover, they were one of the pioneers that gave the future thrash or speed metal bands the seeds to grow. But that said, and as fantastic as it is they respect and honour them by playing it...James’ take on the vocals doesn’t grab me like Freddie and Brian, Roger, and John all have a way of playing even the harder stuff like this in a melodic way. Metallica’s version is more...noise. But, well done noise on a good song. 😝. Still say you should watch James singing while Brian, Roger, and John played at the Freddie Mercury Tribute. Ok, this vid got me to thinking about great cover songs. This is not your usual genre but there is a famous great song by the 80’s English band New Order called Bizarre Love Triangle. Just a great, great song by them. But there is a cover of it from the 90’s by an Australian band called Frente. It is the perfect example of taking an existing song and making it your own in a very different yet amazingly beautiful way. I literally think it’s the best cover of a song I’ve ever heard. I know it’s not the kind of music you do on your channel but I highly recommend that on your own time you expand your horizons and listen first to New Order’s original version and then to Frente’s cover of Bizarre Love Triangle.
    It will always mean more to me than to you guys but I think you’ll enjoy it anyway. You can’t understand what a band like New Order meant to us 80’s kids.

    Electra Records was celebrating their 30th anniversary and wanted current acts to cover the original acts. They asked Metallica to cover Queen. Metallica told them to fuck off. The label got them this song, which they refused to record with those lyrics. At least this is the story they gave then, before they covered Bob Segar and did a country song.

    This version is awesome but sorry guys Brian is the better guitarist, Brian does say himself that there are other far better players than him but I have heard everything he has done and seen him live numerous times and he is astounding, even his recent versions of Brighton rock are out there. I love Metallica but they can sound samey (my opinion) , go on listen to Brian's "Resurrection" for a tapping extravaganza.

    MetallicA, originally recorded this for: Rubaiyat - Elektra Recs. 40th Anniversary celebration.
    [Elektra was the label who signed Metallica away from Megaforce, following the release of Ride The Lightning (so: their first major label)]. That version is much better (and, I believe it's the same recording which, latter, appears on: Garage, Inc. -which combines numerous sources of previously recorded material -as well as some more newly recorded (at THAT time) material.- ), and live version usually ...are not the best ways to get introduced to a song (even by a band who's covering said song).
    Metallica has always honored the bands and musicians who inspired them and, by doing so, raised the profile of any number of GREAT, little-known artists, among their fan-base (which has grown, voluminously, over the past number of decades).
    Probably, most well-known (besides their cover of "Stone Cold Crazy") are their covers of multiple Budgie songs and Diamond Head songs. [e.g.: "Breadfan", "Crash Course In Brain Surgery" [by: Budgie]; "Am I Evil?", "The Prince", "Helpless", "Sucking My Love", et al. [Diamond Head] ] which helped popularize THOSE bands' music to their fans.
    Blitzkrieg, Holocaust and, maybe, The Misfits (although, while relatively unknown outside of certain circles, in the 1980s, they had more of a fan-base and greater recognition than, either: Blitzkrieg or Holocaust did -esp. in the United States).) are relatively unknown bands which Metallica, also, raised the profile of, by covering their material.
    Metallica's covers are, for-the-most-part: really special, incisive, appreciative, full of love and admiration and fun for, both, the players and the audience.
    One of the BIGGEST "missing components" (I think) is, the band: Angel Witch. Lars and James have, many times, claimed a love for their (honestly: spectacular!!!!) debut album [simply titled: Angel Witch -although, sometimes incorrectly combined into a single phrase (as the U.S. tends to prefer, for some, stupid, reason. 🤬🙄) as: "Angelwitch" [sic] -the band, themselves never used this formatting.].
    As far as I know, Metallica have never, either, recorded or performed, on-stage, any Angel Witch song (although it was a major influence on them, as youngsters!).
    Perhaps it is, somehow, due to the admiration that Dave Mustaine, also, had for the record. - If you want to know where Mustaine copped a ton of his licks and style (even up through: Rust In Peace!), just listen to: Angel Witch. You will hear it, clearly! !!🤘🔥🤘

      @SonicProfessor_a.k.a._T._Andra 4 года назад

      You are, completely, correct: Kirk's guitar solo on this is, rather, boring. It doesn't live up to Brian May's elegance and deft melodicism.
      Lars (as he is notorious for doing - right from the get-go -I mean: of Metallica's career!!! -I mean, if you haven't heard, the JOKE was, always that: Thrash metal was, in fact, "created," because Lars couldn't hold a tempo, effectively! (and started speeding up!! 😛😜 😂😂🤣 [He started playing, live, with a click at the end of the Master Of Puppets tour ("circa" then) and in the studio, on: ...And Justice For All. - He plays with a click, to this day. -Lots of players use one, esp. to get in synch with or stay on beat with: complex syncopation or multiple, layered, drum rhythms, being played simultaneously, etc. ...but Lars, actually, NEEDS one.-]
      ...all I'm saying is: That COULD, actually, be TRUE (at least to some degree!) 👍)
      seems to get pretty sloppy, in the 2nd verse of the song. ...but it gets covered pretty well.
      I do agree: the Metallica version has SOME advantages over the original Queen version, but each is its own monster and the song is tits, no matter WHAT!
      Everyone knows: you CAN'T compete with Freddie's vocal (and James never tries to!). Lars doesn't duplicate all of Roger Taylor's fills, either (in fact: almost none) but that is FINE, too!!!!
      The sharper, more aggressive rhythm (which complements Metallica's style), -and, I mean, here: the rhythm guitars, but, also, the drums.- makes the Metallica version feel more powerful and gives it an intensity that is... -well, I guess it's only in comparison that one trounces the other. On initially hearing "Stone Cold Crazy" in 1974, ...it kinda scared most people (I mean, the ones who it didn't thrill!!! 😛😛🤘🔥🔥🔥⚡)
      ...just: things to consider.
      I think you guys did well with this one (and this is one of the EXTREMELY few "cover vs. original" comparisons which is, actually, worthwhile, too)!!!!!
      Good goin'!

    A good enough song contains many songs.
    (Or maybe a good enough band can find a new song in an old song.)
    Metallica has also covered Budgie: *Breadfan* (and beyond a certain point it makes no sense to ask which is "better" - something I might illustate with more striking contrasts in the replies to this). ruclips.net/video/9Z6cVUOhLDw/видео.html

    • @sicko_the_ew
      @sicko_the_ew 5 лет назад

      I think maybe which version of a song one hears first might influence what feels like "the right one", so if you listen to Metallica's Breadfan, you might later think Budgie got it all wrong (a terrible mistake - and Metallica would agree - but it is humanly possible).
      Anyway, here's a new song in an old one that was plenty good enough. Napalm Death: *To Go Off and Things* ruclips.net/video/PWYqV4zxjkA/видео.html (I suppose the recipe here is just "make it heavy as ... a firetruck ... ?")

    • @sicko_the_ew
      @sicko_the_ew 5 лет назад

      OK now try that on piano (*To Go Off and Things* - quite a free interpretation, to extract one of the other songs that's hidden away inside this). ruclips.net/video/REuREn6Ti9c/видео.html

    • @sicko_the_ew
      @sicko_the_ew 5 лет назад

      For reference purposes, here's *To Go Off and Things* - and the video they made for it - with a ballpoint pen solo at the end (can't be many "pen solos" out there) . ruclips.net/video/t_jhBoM0_As/видео.html
      It might feel all wrong if the first version you ever heard of this is Napalm Death's.
      (You probably don't need any reminders of the original, so I'll go get *Nude Disintegrating Parachute Woman* as a surrogate, to save you from that lingering sense of discontent that sometimes comes from ... well nothing, normally).

      ruclips.net/video/pl2TChhcSfI/видео.html (some or other Budgie song. I forget the name now)
      OH, and completely and utterly unrelated, Emanuele Sterbini of Sterbus (you can find them on Bandcamp and RUclips) has just posted to warn that the success of their new album has almost "wiped out" their back catalogue, so if you want to obtain some rarities (there's like one copy of this, and five of that left) which won't be re-pressed/ re-burnt, ever. (If there is. It's actually about an hour ago that he gave the "stock count", so it might all be snapped up by now.

    Oh boy... Where to start. For fear of sounding like a salty Queen fan. I like Metallica's version because I like Metallica. But I have never put it on the level of the original. I personally think Metallica's version is vastly over rated. But that's just me. Perhaps we may have to convince you two to do a triple take on Stone Cold Crazy next week using a live Queen version as well. The 1977 Houston is the fastest version of SCC that Queen ever played (I believe) but the audio quality is modest at best. The 1974 Rainbow version is amazing sound quality but is 4 or 5 seconds longer so not at the pace that Houston is. Maybe do both as they are really short? What a wonderful idea you guys just thought of. ~Jedi mind tricks happening now~
    Appreciation as always. My Melancholy Blues ~More Jedi mind tricks happening now~ My Melancholy Blues
    So my request for next Queen song would be My Melancholy Blues. What is that? You were just thinking about that song? Amazing. Must be fate. Love.

      celt67 actually Queen fans are the ones who suggested they listen to this so I don’t think most dislike this version, or think it’s “less than”. It’s a cover & most covers are done out of respect for the original artists, can’t argue with that (especially since they give Queen respect & kudos!).
