My favorite thing about Stewart Copeland's drumming isn't even REALLY about him, it's the fact that he made such iconic decisions with these songs that, there are choices he made originally that Sting hates HATES to this day, but every single drummer that's played those songs since fights tooth and nail for those drum parts BECAUSE THEY ARE THAT GOOD! I heard Josh Freese explain that in an interview and I haven't forgotten that ever since. I don't know if you could call that a lesson but I, sure as Hell, remembered it.

The Police were part of the small amount of music that made it bearable to listen to the radio from about 1980-1985..gotta remember we didnt have indoor plumbing, tooth fixin and larnin'..Copeland used a bucket, a cookie tin, and his paws switch on the first 3 albums

A&A, you should react to the VIDEO of Ren's 2024 mash-up cover of, "Back on 74 - Message in a Bottle", it's amazing!
To find the right video, here's the exact title: *Ren - Back on 74 / Message In A Bottle (Live retake)*
It came out 4 months ago, and has 1M views, on the channel, Ren.
"Back on 74", is a 2023 song by Jungle, and Ren mashes it masterfully with The Police classic!

When The Police became popular I sort of dismissed them because I thought they were a punk band but then I saw the music video for Message in a Bottle. I became a huge fan. I saw them in concert in 2008. I saw Sting in concert last October at the Hollywood Bowl.

For me, Sting is a poet first a musician second, who writes lyrics like this in our day?
“Just a castaway, an island lost at sea, oh
Another lonely day with no one here but me, oh
More loneliness than any man could bear
Rescue me before I fall into despair, oh”

The trio bands in the 80’s were amazing. The Police were a reggae/punk/jazz hybrid. Rush was a formative prog metal band influenced by the Police (reggae section in Spirit of Radio). ZZ Top brought Texas blues to a mainstream pop audience.

Might be a tough one to find but back in the day there used to be charity events called "The Secret Policeman's Ball" and "The Secret Policeman's Other Ball". Sting performed an unforgettable solo version of this song as part of one of these events (I forget which one. I had the album soundtrack as a kid). It also had Phil Collins solo on piano. Worth listening to if you can find it. Great video guys.

When I was about 16, I got an acoustic Taylor guitar. For reasons I still don’t understand, one of the first riffs I tried to learn was Andy Summers’ opening riff on this song. It’s not easy.

The Live recording that improved the sound quality of all Live records that came after, was "Supertramp Paris", from about 1978. For the first time, a concert recording sounded as clean, quiet and professional as the original studio version of the same songs.
On the other hand, I have bought live bootlegs of Genesis or Peter Gabriel that sounded awful, recorded off the FM airwaves or live in venues but not from their sound boards, and the energy, historic significance and performances made them worth every penny. For example, imagine a dark, moody, synth-heavy version of "Heard it Through the Grapevine" by Peter Gabriel and his band, in his late-70s Punk era. Amazing. On blue translucent, marbleized vinyl. Double record, recorded in some basement club in NYC.
