    This Macbook has no backlight due to a common F'up - pin 1 of the LCD cable is bent. Pin 1 is for the LCD backlight. The board's current sensing circuit on backlight output will notice that pin 1 is touching the connector housing itself, shorted to ground, and not send power through to the circuit. Bending the pin back fixed the problem.
    At Apple, this issue would have cost the customer $1200. You might not believe me, which is why we have it all on tape. :)

      @llliiimmmeee The computer was restored to functionality by moving a pin with some tweezers.
      The 'scam' is not directly related to that guy at the beginning who was telling the reporter they would need to replace $1100 worth of components, he's only doing what the company has hired and trained him to do. The 'scam' lies with the company itself purposefully making it harder for people to repair their devices so that they have no other option than to go to company owned stores where the employees have been trained to charge them exorbitant prices without checking for common issues that might arise with their devices.

      @@BizznessBox Right to repair has nothing to do with switching your phone every year. Quite the opposite. It's about being able to repair your phone so when something does fail, you can keep it 5 or 6 or even 7 years because you can fix it yourself with aftermarket parts. Instead of going to apple after two years and them saying, "Your phone is two years old. We can't fix it. You have to get a new phone now." @@TaSwavo I see a lot of people against universal health care until they get charged 200k for an injury in a car accident or a heart attack, which they pay 15 000 per year of private insurance, which bail out on them the moment they are asked to pay back. Then they don't have the money to sue the insurance company and end up bankrupt losing their houses.
      But it would cost them 30$ to 7 000$ per year for universal healthcare, the rich pay more so the poorer can have the right to live.
      Yeah, maybe it sucks to have 30 000#$of your 200 000$ salary going directly into healthcare you aren't using, but it's also about remembering when you were a kid and you had surgery that would cost over 30k but you were covered for free or when you were a student at 20 years old and you were only paying 300$ per year for healthcare, another 1000$ for a full year education and you got free medication for an infection after an unfortunate accident.

      The only reason apple stock has kept on increasing in value is because of this sort of anti consumer shit, forcing you to buy the latest and greatest product while locking you into their ecosystem. One of the best examples is how Samsung has an app for its galaxy buds both on the google play store AND apple app store, so you aren't locked to using a samsung device, you can use them on any android AND iphone. MEANWHILE apple's airpods are a PITA to use on anything other than apple products. ever wonder why they make these things so easy to use? it's so that they can prey on the people that know the least about technology and they can lure them in to these expensive repairs.

      He meant that the liquid indicator turned red which means that a fair amount of liquid entered the chasis and even if the screen damage wasn't because of the liquid damage, they still have to do the appropriate procedures just in case that liquid did damage something inside and would cause short circuit in the components

      As much as I hate Apple, you gotta understand that the guy from Apple explicitly stated at the beginning of this that Apple does not do partial repairs, which is what the guy Louis did. They only have solutions that involve replacing entire parts, and their OEM parts happen to be prohibitively expensive. It's not fraud nor is it illegal because they are extremely up front about this policy when you bring them a device, and it is little different than taking your car to the dealership for repairs. It was legit like the first thing out the guy's mouth, and when CBC asked for an alternative, he didn't lie and say that it couldn't be done for cheaper, only that they had no cheaper solutions.

    Plus, better aftercare services would improve the chances of brand loyalty and for new customers who are willing to change because of that. (I had my iPhone fixed by a 3rd party (screen for about 600 bucks) (a new phone would cost me 4k) and another repair cost about 1/3 the price of a new one for both water and damage to the motherboard but didn’t go through because the phone was already obsolete.

      Yes they did. And you should thank them for it. If you know anything about physics behind lithium-ion battery, you should know that chemicals decay over time.
      When you battery drops to 80% of its chemicals level, it can no longer support peak activity. So you have performance manager available that makes your phone to process one task at the time, which does slow it down.
      I see people every day who don’t use it and their phone just shuts down unexpectedly because battery can’t provide enough power.
      Apple, at least, has stores where you can replace the battery same day, in an hour, and walk away. Good luck finding support for Google Pixel ... all they give you is FAQ from which you have to file a claim to be helped over mail.

    Wow this video is 5 years old and I literally had the exact same experience at the Macstore at coquitlam centre this week. The repair, at first, was quoted to me at $335, then they opened it up and found "water damage" and it doubled. The tech person even said that the components that needed to be replaced were the same "the top case" but because they detected water damage, it would be $695.00!! Why? They couldn't say. I repeated "so essentially you're doing the same job, but it will be $700 rather than $335? And the answer was "Yes".
    I took it elsewhere. Found a local tech guy with a simple google search and it was done in 1 hour for $50. All he needed to do, he said, was clean it up a bit, put a new cable into it, and it was fine.
    When this thing fully dies, I won't be buy Mac's anymore. A quality acer off of amazon will be fine at 1/5 the price.

      @zachariuskioussis4471 5 лет назад +2

      Nah still ripping them off not fraud, there's a difference in how they plan to fix it . The Genius Bar isn't trained to actually repair issues they are giving base prices for issues like 200 a screen or 500 for other on a phone. They then put in for replacement or replace the parts . Plug and play is how most of them are taught not to diagnose what the issue is. For the MacBook example they likely planned to replace the whole board or screen assembly to fix it when all it needed was a wire cause that's how they are taught.
      *Fraud would be saying your car needs a new alternator and engine when just the alternator and you know that.
      *Ineptitude would saying it needs the alternator and engine cause your a fuckup.
      *A ripoff would be overpriced repair which is this case . Per the analogy the engine needs a screw replaced that was loose and instead of trying to figure out the exact issue they write the engine off and bill you for it billing you more than usual cause they are a premium service.
      They arnt doing the repair wrong or lying about it they are just taught to replace the broken chunk.

I have had zero experience repairing electronics. Guy told me it'd be about $500 or so for the fix. Stupid me I went out and bought another MacBook instead (it was for the kids' school) only to stumble across some repair sites to see I could do the fix myself for, on the high end, $10. Embarrassing, sure. But Apple is borderline criminal with not telling me that I could just consider a DIY fix. Fortunately, that did lead me to find your channel, and for that I'm truly grateful to learn about the "right to repair" movement and your fine work. Thanks for the great content.

    When the repair costs more than a new product, you should KNOW that you're paying for overpriced crap.

      @@Kiwi-ICU-RN they aren't saying you should be able to whole build a car for cheaper than the manufacturer from spare parts, just that to replace a spark plug you shouldn't need to spend 1000's or tens of 1000's for something so simple.

    Broken pin on the LCD cable? Sure we'll replace the motherboard and top case, that'll be $1200, thank you for choosing Apple our laptops are the best.

      I can even explain replacing the entire display assembly if they don't feel like diagnosing screen vs cable, but replacing top case including keyboard, battery, trackpad... why

    • @bkrich
      @bkrich 5 лет назад +25

      Would the Apple store even replace a LCD cable for a price or will they make you buy a screen as well ? that seems like way too much work for them with the huge return they are use to

      i have a better question what is left of the original computer after they replace all that they might as well be just swapping the harddrive to a new laptop for both that price and what they plan to replace. Apple good lord not even once.

      But Louis, it's the Apple experience. Just because you can't understand it, doesn't mean it is wrong, it is just...different.

      I'm not disagreeing with Apple for charging $1200 for that repair, the water indication was tripped, and to be sure they have to replace everything.
      But the shitty thing is, they actively stop 3rd parties from repairing it. Surely Apple can charge $1200 for the repair, but if someone charge just $10, don't sue them or make thing harder to repair.
      it's just anti-consumer.

      It's policy, they do what apple said they should do: FUCK THEIR CUSTOMERS AS HARD AS POSSIBLE. And the customers seems to have nothing against, otherwise they would buy something better with Android.

    4 years later and this still holds up. The fact their computers cost less than the supposed sum of parts is insane and should be illegal

    • @memyname1771
      @memyname1771 9 месяцев назад

      Every product you buy will cost more than the sum of the local wholesale cost of the parts. The sum of the retail price of individual components will exceed the price of the complete product. There is nothing illegal about that! Knowingly selling unneeded subcomponents at inflated prices, and telling the customer that they are required to accomplish the repair, should be illegal in every jurisdiction of the country!

      assembly is labor that has to be paid for, if the markup was going towards paying any of the actual ground level workers in apple's favorite sweatshops then it would be perfectly reasonable, but, yknow... lol
