  • In recent weeks two Sega inspired and compatible consoles have been revealed.
    The first is the GF1 Neptune which takes the look of the original cancelled Sega 32X hyrbid, and the second is currently known only as the SuperSega.

      Me too, but I honestly believe it should have an online market like the Neptune. Why has nobody thought of this before? In the modern day, it’s much smarter to provide a centralized location to buy games, like the Switch. I understand cartridges are more nostalgic and authentic, but you literally can just make an online store like that too. I think it’s a smart idea!

    The GF1 is interesting as hell. They've mentioned that if it does well they intend to do expansion modules. It's very possible those modules would end up giving you the same functionality as that sega super systems. Either way it's pretty neat. Hope they end up seeing the light of day and at a not terrible price point.

      If it can accept Genesis carts, it should be already be able to accept the various Master System adapters. You'd just have to modify a Power Base if you wanted to use it. I don't know enough about FPGA, but I think it should be as easy as a firmware update if it doesn't already work. The Genesis was just a Master System with a beefier graphics processor, after all, implying that any FPGA clone should already have the ability to process MS games. Being able to run the rest via modules would be pretty sweet, though.

    I like the idea: finally a Neptune. But I fear it’s just too late. And those who want original hardware, although FPGA, still not original hardware. AND to boot, FPGA usually means $$. Which we go back to “just buying original hardware it that’s the case”. I’ve never owned a 32x, played one a couple times, but I’m sure emulation should be “accurate enough”

    • @DDavEE

      I plan to buy the GF1 Neptune. I skipped the Mega Sg due to its lack of built-in 32X support.

    • @marcelosoares7148
      @marcelosoares7148 Месяц назад

      I think if you approach it by the "cost of the package," it doesn't sound too bad. Like, a Mega Drive in good condition + a 32X + a good HDMI upscaler can cost quite a bit, which gives the GF1 the opportunity to undercut that combo, even if it uses FPGA. The bigger problem here is the 32X appeal, which is basically zero for most people. The system has 40 games, but only 4 or 5 are actually worth playing, so I would just ignore the 32X completely if I wanted to buy the real hardware, to be honest. It feels like that the company behind it made a Neptune just because of the "wow factor" and didn't think about the system library but time will tell if they're actually going to release new games that make use of the 32X.

    Whichever one everybody gets, I’m getting, I’m undecided, and excited for both.
    The superSega personally is dreamy, with how it attempts to perfectly emulate all consoles, I also like the nod shown to the Mark III in the design. Meanwhile, the crowd thinks the GF1 Neptune is much more realistic, will probably release earlier or be cheaper, and I really like the concept of it having a Game store. I think FPGA consoles should try to put modern twists on some features more. I’m pretty sure the retroUSB AVS has online leaderboards for example. Lastly I also like how it’s sort of like a revival of the vaults, being a remake of a prototype console that never got used. Interesting concept.
    Neither the less I’m very excited for both!

    I totally avoided the 32X. I knew Saturn was coming so there was no point in getting it unless there was a library of games that would change my mind. Unfortunately, there are only a few games nowadays that I would actually play and I can do that through emulation. It was a bad move by SEGA to put it out. They should have focused on releasing great Genesis games that took advantage of all the unlocked potential that the console was known for near the end of its run. Or put more effort into the SEGA CD instead of those bad FMV games. They screwed up bad by putting out two pricey peripherals that were not supported adequately. I got the CD addon after it was dropped for a much lower price and started getting the games. What a waste of potential.

    I’m not sure why so many people hate on this console. Yes, it was a poor business decision. Yes, everything about it is utterly over the top. Yes it’s completely useless without a Sega Genesis to mount it too. However,
    My 1st console was a Genesis. I never got a CD or 32X for myself as a kid but had several friends who did. I can remember a few months of playing Mortal Kombat 2, Knuckles, Doom, and several sports games with a friend who broke his leg. Those games looked better than any other games at the time. This also includes what little footage we had seen of the Sega Saturn and Sony Playstation. Yes it honestly looked better than early PS1 game footage. I think most of the hate comes from the sticker shock of trying to collect for this underrated console that never got to see it’s full potential.

    The SuperSega is vaporware nonsense. There's no evidence of a Dreamcast FPGA core anywhere near the level they're claiming and the "test footage" they just released is conspicuously missing any DC games (they claim it's still a "few weeks" off). They're answering "maybe" to obvious stuff like whether the optical drive will be able to read GD-ROMs (the answer is "no," since only a tiny handful of off-the-shelf drives could and they're all long out of production) or whether it'll be able to load Saturn and DC games from flash (in light of the last point, it'd better, unless they expect everyone to play their DC games from burned CDs of Echelon releases). They're still acting like they have a snowball's chance in hell of getting Sega's approval and shamelessly slapping the Sega name and logo all over the promotional materials. The chipset they're claiming to use sells for around $10,000 and yet they're saying this thing will come in under 500. The guy's last venture (Cinemartin) established a pretty clear predilection for promising big and delivering nothing, and I'll eat my hat if this turns out otherwise.

    I always found the bonus levels on chaotix to be rather insulting. Because they show what the 32X SHOULD be doing instead of just a boring side scroller. I've heard some say Chaotix used the 32X for fancy colors on the 2D levels. WHOOPTY DOO!!! I can hardly notice the difference. That has to be the most boring niche feature they could've used the 32X for.
