What AMAZING news! I love my 32X and to have a reliable system is awesome. I would love to see more new Sega 32X games. I was worried about the HDMI because I prefer to play my 32X and Genesis games via composite to smooth out the dithering but it looks like composite is also available. Brazil has been killing it the the Genesis and 32X content. What a time to be a retro gamer!
I'm happy to see a Brazilian project that revives an incredible history of video games, especially a console that Sega never actually released. Great video, wonderfully well done content!
Agree with you, this is exciting. I'm excited about the homebrew applications for this, perhaps we can right a few of historys wrongs! Sega will never die!
High quality shell, high compatibility rate (96%+), and $150 usd would make this quite collectible. If you cut max profit out of the front, you can make it up with more sales and good reputation
Very true. And to be honest FPGA is not super expensive. Analog's products give the impression it is but there are other FPGA products out there that are the 3rd of the cost of Analog.
What would be awesome is if some clever person with a 3D printer started selling shell cases that look exactly like the Sega Neptune so you could swap it out and make it look exactly how it was supposed to be.
Me and my buddies just got done trying out the entire 32x collection released and it was a blast. I wouldn't mind having a new console to play 32x and shelf the original console. Like they say better late then never! Great video Mike👍
@RetroGamerBoy some of my favorites were Knuckles chaotic, kolibri, space harrier, Wrestle Mania, Darxide, Black Thorn, spiderman, and of course doom. All the games had definitely better color and backgrounds but most lacked in other areas. I don't like sports games so I was not impressed with them but they did look good. Toughman, star trek, and rbi baseball were terrible. The fighter games all had better back grounds but otherwise nothing to rave about. Cd games to me are petty much a novelty, night trap is good and corpse killer but got old fast. All around it was great to try them all. Even tried Doom that was reworked 2.2 i think. We did all the virtual boy before that which boy that sucked! Still cool to say I tried them all to.
I am looking forward to Gf1 Neptune so much😀 great to see you talk about this. I honestly belive a console like this will make the homebrew/indie scene for 32x games explode. Now there is a new great way for people to play 32x games. And another goos fpga soulution for Mega Drive games too. And as you said. The big thing here is to make a cobsole that never was made😁👍
Está meio atrasado, mas que bom que você falou dele! Outra informação importante, o console será na cor preta, mas do mesmo tamanho do mega drive 2, para que o mesmo caiba perfeitamente no mega cd 2

With an SD slot, a personal wish of mine is that we get to see Game Gear, Master System, and SG-1000 support. Neptune powering those platforms shouldn't be hard.
That's correct Mike. I saw what they did with that consolized MVS unit and it looks amazing. That you for telling me about it as well bro. 8^) Anthony..
The Neptune CD was going to be $199, released about the same time as the Saturn... Christmas of 1995. When the 32X was announced in Spring of 1994, everyone was asking what happened to the ($50) SVP LockOn. It had six hit arcade games (Virtua Fighter & Racer, Star Wars Arcade, and Daytona USA, among others). When SoJ took over in January of 1994 and pulled the rug out from under us, devs, retailers, and SEGA enthusiasts were angry... and broke. And we were being told in May 1995 to shell out ANOTHER $400 for a machine with no games! Saturn was dead when it reached stores.
So many pointless consoles, I still don't get why Sega even need the 32X when the Saturn already had a cartridge slot. They could had just made that cartridge slot a Genesis cartridge slot and just make the Saturn backwards compatible with Genesis games or just turn that into a 32X cartridge slot so people who did buy into the 32X games won't feel like they just got screw.
@@VOAN In today's market it's a given that new systems come out all the time. Back in the 90's, Tom Kalinske (CEO SoA at the time) had the right approach from a marketing perspective in that there were millions of Genesis/MegaDrives already in homes and parents were still agitated by the idea of having to shell out more money every few years for a replacement (one of the biggest friction points of Atari 2600 -> Atari 5200 i.e. expecting forward compatibility let alone backward compatibility). What would have REALLY synced the deal was that SGI (Silicon Graphics of Hollywood CGI fame and chip that made the N64 possible) first approached SEGA to work with them on their next console. Tom Kalinske wanted to work with them. Sega of Japan said no. Think about what that would have done. Sega would have had an add-on to the Genesis for $150. People without a Genesis would have gotten the Neptune for $200 (half the price of the Saturn), it would have been essentially the N64. Sega would not have had the blurry image mapping issues the N64 had because they wouldn't have shot themselves in the foot with the limited RAM that Nintendo did. Consequently, there would never had been the "$399 Sega -> '...$299' Sony embarrassment. They wouldn't have upset the resellers by shipping early in secret out of fear that they needed to get the jump on Sony (since there was already an installed base of SEGA fans who loved their Genesis). There would have been zero confusion to customers and zero animosity of feeling they got shafted. Developers wouldn't have had nearly as difficult a time trying to figure out how to develop for the Saturn, they would have had greater 3rd-party support and it wouldn't have leaked the same hesitation over to the Dreamcast as it had. Sega would still be making hardware to this day for sure.
32X is what killed Sega's credibility. Saturn was already expensive without backward compatibility so that would not have flied. On a side note Saturn was not a failure world wide. It was a failure outside of Japan. In Japan it is actually Sega's best selling console and even beat the N64.
Commenteeeeee! Great video as usual Mike. Is it weird that I'm looking forward to watching the video of you spraying and customising the neptune, (including making a box I presume?), than I am the release of the console itself?
This is super interesting. I remember hearing about the Neptune back in the day, but have since completely forgotten about it. Sega was such an interesting part of video game history. I’m so glad I was there for it. SEGA!
What a mind-blowing video! And thank you for making it Retrogamerboy. Oh my goodness what an amazing prototype! One of things i'm hoping is that if it's to use FPGA it hopefully will also support the Master System through a converter as the original 32X had the Master System pins deactivated through the device. Also i'd say the SD card slot will be for firmware updates and for fixes to the hardware down the line much like Analogue's Mega SG. These are the features I want to see when it's finished: 1. AV Out through HDMI and Composite video (I want the choice much like the Hyperkin Mega Drive) 2. Full Master System support through a converter 3. Has to support PAL 50Hz much like the Analogue Mega SG 4. Can play EverDrive flash carts and large ROM games over 4 Megabytes in size.
I'm very eager to see this release, especially at a competitive price, because the purpose of this console isn't to stay on the shelf, but to allow Sega's huge fan base to play the Mega Drive and 32X and to release new games and improved versions of old ones. The original consoles are ageing, especially their internal components, which need to be taken care of to keep working. Personally, I'd love it if it could also run SG-1000, Master System and Game Gear games, although it wasn't designed for that, but it will be a great thing if it can run the 32X, Mega Drive and Sega CD.
@@RetroGamerBoy It will just depend on the emulation profiles of the FPGA chip used. Personally, I don't think 8-bit consoles are Games Care's target, but it would be great if they were also part of the package, especially at a good price.
Couldn't care less about the Game Gear or the SG-1000 myself but dang, It should definitely support the base Master System through the cartridge slot via a converter much like the original Mega Drive, not having Master System support is a deal-breaker for me for any kind of Mega Drive, the two go hand in hand.
definitely getting one. I haven't used my original 32x for so long, I'm afraid it's dead. Since Analogue gave up on SNES, MD, this is the way to go for MD.
I can't wait for this!! I remember seeing this in magazines back in the 90's and desperately wanting it. I don't really have room to set up the Tower of Power so this Neptune would be ideal.
@@RetroGamerBoy Hopefully it wont be to expensive as I'd like to buy two, one to modify and one to keep as new for my collection. If only Sega would finally release it themselves.
I don't care if I have to drive all the way from Québec, Canada, to brazil to buy this system. I'm getting it. Oh and I'm willing to part ways with some body parts too, if it gets a bit expensive. I want --- need this. Oh and I want people to develop new 32x games - ACTUAL 32x games, using everything the system can offer.
I only had 10 games on mine and all of those 10 games were games that are better on other consoles (well back then anyways, nowadays maybe someone fix one of them).
@@RetroGamerBoy My 32X has the same problem your 32X has, one layer of the picture shakes while the other is still, making all the games appear jumpy. It only does this on my Mega Drive model 1, model 2 it plays fine.
I love the 32x and I’ve been following this as I like what the teams idea vision for this Neptune for me this is awesome and I know a lot of people have negative or dislike the 32x but I feel the 32x had potential which never had a chance to show what it could do and seeing talented people out there that did the Tomb Raider and especially the Doom Resurrection I was amazed what could be done so yeah I’m for this and hope we get to see new games and how far the 32x could be pushed 👍🏻 video Mike
I'm jacked to see the full potential of both systems working in conjunction with each other & major upgrades to current 32X games like Doom Resurrection in addition to games we never got like UMK3/MK Trilogy, Rayman, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, etc. It'd be cool to see a new Virtua Racing game too
Interesting. I was looking at FPGA Mega Drive options yesterday as I'm not dirt poor for the first time in a long time. Something convenient, simple and reasonably priced. Maybe this is the lad right here? Price is definitely the real factor here.
I wish someone would produce a library of old classic and new sega 32x games with some of the old ones that were rushed redone to show what the 32x was truly capable of, especially in the sound dept. After burner and a few games proved that it could produce amazing sound.
Whoa Mike as you know I love my sega megadrive but I’ve never even heard of the Neptune and it looks amazing can’t wait for you to Rousivate 😀😀😀 a version and create a replica of what it’s should look like and produce the packaging. Anyway great vid glad you doing well and hopefully catch up again soon, cheers Jonathan 👍👍👍
Better as the Mega SG can't play 32X games (without an original 32X, DAC and connectors). It always disappointed me that the Mega SG couldn't play 32X rom files in the same way it can play Mega CD rom files. So the Neptune fills that gap in FPGA hardware.
@ I thought that with an Everdrive it was possible to play 32X games without the need of additional hardware. :O If it’s how you say then I indeed need the Neptune. Fingers crossed that it isn’t more than 300 USD and that it works like a charm.
@@RetroGamerBoypinball8701 is correct. You do still need the actual 32X hardware to play any of its games using any of the flash carts including the ED Pro.
@@RetroGamerBoy ED Pro and Mega SD both require the 32X add-on, as does Mega SG, so I think the Neptune would be fairly unique if it doesn't need a 32X. Don't know how it would work with an ED though, or would it play roms directly via its SD slot? We need more information.
Having a working 32x, Sega CD, multiple Genesis and a Mega SG, I am still looking forward for the Neptune as I like the Design and form factor a lot. Playing the recently released Doom Resurrection, I am still wondering what the 32x would have been capable of.
Well it's FPGA which is hardware emulation, so better than standard software emulation, and closer to the real thing. It should mean that there are new ways to play you new MD and Genesis games.
I want one in black. But if this is exclusive to Brazil it will be a huge disappointment for the rest of the world. A lot of Brazilian shops don't ship outside the country. That will make importing expensive.
Very intrigued by them saying they're going to make new peripherals. I'm hoping there'll be it's own sega CD addon because these are not easy to find nowadays either, much less in a good working condition. At least it seems likely they'll make a master system adapter as they're working on having that work too.
@RetroGamerBoy didn't know it was bad for some others. I mostly know of problems with Dreamcasts and Game Gears. My cdx has a bit of problem with the disc drive, but otherwise my SEGA systems have been very reliable.
Sometimes when there issues with the Sega 32X, it's because of one or two things or both. It's either because the connector on the 32X doesn't connect to the Sega Genesis cartridge slot very well so it doesn't work or it's because the video connector from the Genesis to the 32X doesn't connect very well for them to work and most of the time it could be because of both not connecting very well. Also very important is that when you use the 32X and Sega Genesis, always use the proprietary Sega power adapter that came with those hardware, don't use cheap third party ones or else they could damage or fry your Genesis and/or 32X.
Eeee heeheehee! I want it! IwantitIwantitIwantit! Forreal tho this is very exciting. Neptune is one of those consoles that, as a Sega collector, you just accept you're never going to own. This is a wonderful thing for collectors. Now then... does it come in black?
This is a very exciting project. If it's rock solid and lands with a $200 USD price tag I think I'll go for it. Anymore and I'll likely have to pass on it.
Thank you very much for the video, Mike is certainly a big name in the indie scene for megadrive and our console goes straight to this audience, the console will be black at launch Mike so maybe you can save some ink lol
@@RetroGamerBoy btw the upscaler was there cause its already hooked on the tv of the guy who made the video at the time, it isn't being used on the neptune at all ^^
My Mega SG/Mega SG/32X tower of power isn't ideal since I can't play 32X and SCD games without switching hardware around, so it'd be interesting how compatible this would be with that kind of stuff.
If it is FPGA it can emulate all systems up to some level that depends on how big the FPGA is. Limiting it to the megadrive family would be an artificial limitation. Hopefully it is a Mister with a few extra bits and bobs so buyers get the full Mister library plus the ability to do physical megadrive media.
They didn’t answer my question, but I hope they’re looking into it. In the original hardware you can’t play Sega CD games from the Mega Everdrive with the 32x connected
I hear its an interface problem. I bet the data lines which would be used by the cart is being being used by the 32x. There was an addon which allowed you to plug the CD SD cart into the expansion on the side of the console which would make the CD car work with the 32x.
It would be cool if it came with controllers. These days are difficult to find a good replacement controller that feels exactly like the old originals. I have a 2.4 GhZ Crystal Blue from Retrobit, a 6 button one. I was scared to break it because there's a lot of people reporting that, so I played just once in a while. Result: This weekend my DPAD broke... My originals are still good till today, but that Retrobit one couldn't last. Retro Gamer Boy, do you know where we can buy replacement parts for our Sega Mega Drive controllers? Is there a market for it? I only see replacement parts for Nintendo consoles. I'm so envy about it.
This is so awesome, but... PLEASE GET 32X SUPPORT INTO SGDK!!! It would be so amazing and drastically expand the developer pool. Many people feel like the 32x is 'the one that got away.'
You know what the sad part is the Sega 32x was basically just supposed to be the second Neptune all it was going to be was just a machine that plays Sega Master system Sega Genesis and Sega 32x games is what it should have been in the first place
@RetroGamerBoy the fact that it was going to be backwards compatible with the Genesis and Master system and have its own library at 32-bit games was amazing but Bernie stoller who was the former president of Sega they claimed he was one of the worst Presidents of all time even Sony didn't want him
Now the real question is does this thing works with Sega CD 32X games? You know games that required both the Sega CD and 32X to run. Since the Neptune doesn't had any connector for the Sega CD add-on how will it run Sega CD 32X versions of those games?
Sega should have never released CD/32X add-ons and just released Sega Neptune with 2x CD-rom and more ram. Basically a 2D focused Saturn for Holiday 93. Focus on Arcade ports and Sports titles. All the popular arcade games from Sega/Capcom/Konami/SNK/Taito etc that were heavy on 2D flashy scaling and rotation. Pack in game would be Racing Hero port with added career mode.

Thanks Mike! This is awesome news, it will be big in 2025. 👍
Totally agree. I can't wait to get one.
Sega should make a new console called Revelations since they had the Genesis.
😅👍
I don't care if I have to drive all the way from Québec, Canada, to brazil to buy this system.
I'm getting it.
Oh and I'm willing to part ways with some body parts too, if it gets a bit expensive.
I want --- need this.
Oh and I want people to develop new 32x games - ACTUAL 32x games, using everything the system can offer.
😅 That is dedication to the cause.
@RetroGamerBoy 😉😜😆😆😆
Never had any issues with my 32x but then again I don’t play it much because I’ve got like 5 games lol
It's been my most unreliable console, and I have a 360.
@@RetroGamerBoytoo soon.
@@RetroGamerBoy Devido a tecnologia atual ,provavelmente o console brasileiro da Gamescare será bem mais confiável do que o 32x original .
Yup this could help boost indie dev on the 32X.
I'm jacked to see the full potential of both systems working in conjunction with each other & major upgrades to current 32X games like Doom Resurrection in addition to games we never got like UMK3/MK Trilogy, Rayman, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, etc. It'd be cool to see a new Virtua Racing game too
Yup this could encourage people to make new 32X games.
Interesting. I was looking at FPGA Mega Drive options yesterday as I'm not dirt poor for the first time in a long time. Something convenient, simple and reasonably priced. Maybe this is the lad right here? Price is definitely the real factor here.
Hopefully they will release price and launch date details soon.
I'm hoping to hit quite a few gaming markets next year. This year I've been chained to my work desk.
@@RetroGamerBoysee you next year, chat megadrive and grab another beer 👍👍😀😀
Good they include composite video. It's the real thing! :D
Correct 💯
I need a CRT with component rgb input. Any suggestions?
A Sony Trinitron is a fantastic, but expensive option.
@RetroGamerBoy I've seen a few but you're right, pretty damm pricey. May take the plunge if all else fails
I believe that the price for our Brazilian market this console will be expensive. I would like to buy it
I think it might be expensive for all countries once import tax is paid. 😥
FPGA retro gaming is as perfect as you can get to capturing the feel of the original hardware.
It's going to be great to play games on this.
when i was a kid i wanted one after hearing about it and i feel like sega should have just gave us this instead of the actual 32x
I totally agree.
Wonder if it’ll be as good as Analogue’s Mega SG.
Better as the Mega SG can't play 32X games (without an original 32X, DAC and connectors). It always disappointed me that the Mega SG couldn't play 32X rom files in the same way it can play Mega CD rom files. So the Neptune fills that gap in FPGA hardware.
@
I thought that with an Everdrive it was possible to play 32X games without the need of additional hardware. :O
If it’s how you say then I indeed need the Neptune. Fingers crossed that it isn’t more than 300 USD and that it works like a charm.
I thaink the ED Pro can.
I think we could get close to PS1 type games running on it.
Glad you made it, never heard of it. so its an emulator, what does this mean for new games?
Well it's FPGA which is hardware emulation, so better than standard software emulation, and closer to the real thing. It should mean that there are new ways to play you new MD and Genesis games.
where to order?
Not available yet.
Next year
It will be from their website when it's released.
is the other device behind the TV a screen capture device possibly?
I did see a 360 next to the unit, so this could be an upscaler for that.
Is compatible with the Megacd?
Yes
Please tell me, what game is shown in the video from 5:59-6:04?
It's Sword of the Apocalypse. Here is a preview video of the game ruclips.net/video/LGo6rSyk3ks/видео.htmlsi=2oXV8OYpRHNCWALv
@@RetroGamerBoy Thank you, man!
This sounds awesome. I'll hold my elation until I see how it interfaces with Sega CD, though.
That will be interesting.
Impressive. I might buy one for my collection if the price is right.
Indy developers? Cool. Now that's something to be excited for. These guys can give us the games we should have got during the 32x's initial run
That would be so awesome. New 32X games.
@RetroGamerBoy Oh the Homebrew community is going to have a field day with this. Bring it on
Looks truly awesome, but from what I remember the library of game for the 32X is quite slim, no?
doez your crt have a hdmi port if not get one
Umm
I'm very much looking forward to this. I hope they make the console available in black.
It would be great to get as a blank black shell.
@RetroGamerBoy A man can dream. 🤞🏿
I too have a dead 32x, this could interest me for the reasons you've mentioned
I love the console, but it's flaky.
@@RetroGamerBoy And it's a pain in the arse to set up, not to mention having to disconnect everything if wanted to play a Master System game.
I wonder when it’ll release?
I think next year.
I want one in black. But if this is exclusive to Brazil it will be a huge disappointment for the rest of the world. A lot of Brazilian shops don't ship outside the country. That will make importing expensive.
argentina paraguay
The team has told me the final unit will be black.
Very intrigued by them saying they're going to make new peripherals. I'm hoping there'll be it's own sega CD addon because these are not easy to find nowadays either, much less in a good working condition. At least it seems likely they'll make a master system adapter as they're working on having that work too.
That's a good call on the Master System Adapter.
Wait.. how or where can we pre/order one??? I need to make sure to get one, this is a longtime Sega fan-dreams come true!!!
I think it's coming out next year. I will share more details when I get them.
@@RetroGamerBoy Thanks! Keep up the good work, Mike!
It was only a mater of time with the Neptune would be back on the minds of gamers Mike. Glad that it is. 86)
Anthony..
It's great for us Genesis and Mega Drive fans. Have you seen that the same company have already released a MVS consolidated unit?
My 32x still strong bought it new back in the day
I envy you.
"Reinvented" is misspelled @10:59. 😅
Also, if much of inside the case is going to be air, then I think they should also offer a "slim" version of it.
I can't wait for people to start making their own 3D printed and injection molded black 32x shells to replace the gray ones.
My 32X never had any problems.
I wish I was you. 😅
Yes it does. The team just told me it will launch in black.
@RetroGamerBoy Based
GREAT!!!!
Yes it is.
Will it be region free?
Yes
9:32 Isn't there a problem with scaling? I'm seeing artefacts on the wheel of the bike.
This is a very exciting project. If it's rock solid and lands with a $200 USD price tag I think I'll go for it. Anymore and I'll likely have to pass on it.
I'm thinking $200 as well.
Thank you very much for the video, Mike is certainly a big name in the indie scene for megadrive and our console goes straight to this audience, the console will be black at launch Mike so maybe you can save some ink lol

That's amazing to hear 🤘😝🤘
If this works the power base converter I'd be really interested.
I don't think the current 32X works with the power base, so it would be cool if it did.
When will the neptune release?
No date yet and this is a pretty ambitious project so it will take a while.
@marcelosoares7148 okay thanks.
I think mid 2025.
Thank you very much my friend =)
Anytime
@@RetroGamerBoy btw the upscaler was there cause its already hooked on the tv of the guy who made the video at the time, it isn't being used on the neptune at all ^^

I’d be interested depending on price. I wonder if Analogue would do something similar in the future?
Maybe, but Analog would triple the price.
Maybe, but Analog would triple the price.
You essentially have what is a Ship of Theseus 32X. Interesting
I was almost on board until the demo where they didnt show any 32X games running.
Next level of the mega drive renaissance; 32x indy games.
That would be amazing.
My Mega SG/Mega SG/32X tower of power isn't ideal since I can't play 32X and SCD games without switching hardware around, so it'd be interesting how compatible this would be with that kind of stuff.
Hopefully they will release more details soon.
Interesting, I wonder why that is.
I hear its an interface problem. I bet the data lines which would be used by the cart is being being used by the 32x. There was an addon which allowed you to plug the CD SD cart into the expansion on the side of the console which would make the CD car work with the 32x.
Hi Mike, miss live at the arcade :( how is Tom doing?
He's ok, moaning about life as usual. We should be meeting up for a games market soon.
Not really. I have picked up controllers cheap on eBay and use them for donor parts.
This is so awesome, but... PLEASE GET 32X SUPPORT INTO SGDK!!! It would be so amazing and drastically expand the developer pool. Many people feel like the 32x is 'the one that got away.'
Will this be available in the US?! I can guarantee many are interested!! I am!!
I think it will be available for import at the very least. I'm not sure if the company has US distribution set up.
Backward compatibility counsel.
I think so
The background hardware is very much like, if not a MiSTer (DE10 Nano etc). The one you circled in red.
Interesting
The Sega Neptune should've been the Genesis 3
Agreed
You know what the sad part is the Sega 32x was basically just supposed to be the second Neptune all it was going to be was just a machine that plays Sega Master system Sega Genesis and Sega 32x games is what it should have been in the first place
Agreed. It would have probably sold better than the 32X
Mike said in the video that it will support Mega-CD games so there has to be a connector to the side at some point.
Is it official product?
It is not an official Sega product
Where to buy ? Can I import it to America
That would have been a better idea.
Alot of attention to detail - even the PCB is blue, just like the Planet Neptune.
It's the little details.
