"Cable companes aren't even that evil"
**MODEM RENTAL FEES WOULD LIKE TO KNOW YOUR LOCATION LINUS**
Spectrum tried to charge me 10 a month just for the wireless feature on the modem.
I'm waiting to see what our new cable company is going to charge for the Fiber modem? We have been waiting for land based internet forever! I was going to wait for starlink but they just said it's going to cost $99 a month and $499 for the Kit! It will be cheaper to wait on Blue Ridge to get the fiber to my little village.
I'm pretty sure the point was that a rental fee is not the same as buying the hardware. If you buy something you shouldn't have to pay again to use it. That's like if you buy a TV from LG and then have to subscribe to THEIR cable package to hook up your XBOX.
@@stephblackcat I really hope you don't ever get Cox cable then, because there are customers I deal with daily that own their equipment and are paying for rental fees. Soley because of the fact they need one specific feature that "entitles them to the upcharge"
@@Aelethil that sounds illegal. You can't rent someone something they own.
I am pretty appalled by Ubiquity here in Bulgaria. I got a full "in wall AP" coverage of my house, used a PoE switch that died once - got replaced by the seller under warranty, then the new one died (bricked itself, cannot boot or reset) after warranty and apparently "nobody can service that, you have to buy a new one". What a crap policy and what a way to lose a customer :( It's a shame, as their products did a nice job.. Hey @Linus, you can tell them that in some places in the EU their business is not that good :(

Oh you made a great point there
Nah, that’s crazy talk...
;)
To be fair, you would probably have that ethernet on an isolated VLAN anyway, and you'd pretty quickly discover a random ethernet cable hanging out on your front porch lol
You act as if Wi-Fi is very unsafe and like it'll just easily be worked around. It's safer than using some company's cloud server.
@@anastasiao4036 I didn't "acted" like that at all. Just pointed out that WiFi *is* safer than having an ethernet port at your door.
imagine paying a monthly service for a freaking doorbell lol
What's next is the question 😂
Considering the majority of these doorbell services do not let you host on your server and instead use the cloud, I wouldn't be surprised they want you to pay additional fees for using their storage.
He should just install cameras in the front along with a cheaper doorbell.
You know you're rolling in dough if you can afford to pay so much on a doorbell.
Imagine paying 300 bucks for a doorbell, plus a monthly fee. And if the company goes bankrupt or the product discontinued you have to replace your doorbell bc there's no way to use your own server.

Along with the whole aspect of they will work till the hardware fails, rather than "they will work till the company gets bought and the new owner gets bored with it and decides to turn it off"

those are massive rabbit holes and security traps, and few enthusiasts really acknowledge or understand it. It does not often suit an engineer needs because it mostly depends on services you can't control yourself. For instance, someone gifted me a RGB strip with a Bluetooth controller, problem is, I want to be able to control colors automatically without having to use their application. I wanted to create a controller myself but there was no specifications about how the strip worked and it was a shady brand no one knew about. Linus: Dedicates a video to a doorbell
Meanwhile Austin: *Opens Z Fold in an elmo costume on mystery tech*
Just watched that
"I watch Linus Tech Tips religiously"
Most cable companies around me charge a monthly fee for their cable box.
The point he was making is that they only charge a monthly fee, don't require you to buy the hardware, not both like Ring.
Same
One of the reasons I've been looking at Eufy, they have a central base station that does its own thing, that also works with their external/internal cameras, and you can patch it in to a NAS like Synology. What are you using for the other cams, also Ubiquity?
Here in Argentina that thing would last 4 minutes installed in your door.
At least you'd have video of who took it.
I went down directly to the comments when I saw how it is mounted. Probably because I live in Argentina too.
I'd hate to live in that sh!thole.
I was thinking, a person planning nefarious deeds, all they need at night would be an all black outfit and balaclava; then either rip the doorbell off the wall or cover it/spray paint it to kill that camera view. Of course, Linus has plenty of backup cameras around the outside that would already have recorded them!
I was going to say, ever since Linus grow out his beard he hasn’t been dropping stuff.. not anymore :/
Ay he's finally doing something simple, "and here's my UDM pro" 😂
Ubiquiti: Not a snitch, one time pay
Ring: snitch, subscription that bricks hardware if not paid
pretty easy matchup
Me:rings doorbell
doorbell: Shocks me with 1000W electricity
thats not how electricity works but ok
Doorbell: Bring your phone closer, I might as well fast charge it!
i thought that when i read the title
@@oofig right.. That's how electricity bill works..
wack comments, all of em
"Cable companies of all people are not even that evil, you just pay the subscription fee and they drop off a box."
Hold my beer, plebe.
Was going to comment "Linus clearly isn't familiar with US cable companies." Take my updoot
Exactly! After he said that I immediately went to search for a comment like this
I dont understand how does doorbell has a subscription fee🙄🙄. Someone explain me why tf is there a subscription fee for the doorbell
But the real question is:
Can it run crysis
Technically yes
or doom
