4:17 that black box is required so it can deliver power to the doorbell if it's connected to a chime. Doorbells chimes are designed to short the connection to ring the chime. This box changes the behaviour of the two wires going to the camera so the chime will ring and not disconnect power to the camera. If you had a rear doorbell and you wanted another camera connected, you would have to use 2 of those black boxes.
Holy hell I wish I saw your comment before my install. Just went through 2 days of swapping out chime box and transformer and testing out every part only to find out that I skipped out on that little box because of this video. I was getting low voltage warning on the doorbell (14V) and buzzing at the chime. That black box was key to it all. No buzz on original chime, 18V at doorbell, on original 16V 10VA transformer.
I've been waiting this thing to come out on available but sad to hear the range it handles, I also live in MN and for sure we get crazy cold wheather nd dont know if it will handle the cold climate for days, if not weeks
For what it's worth, the original G4 Doorbell has the same rated temp range and there are hundreds of folks online saying they have no issues in Canadian Winters or Vegas summers where temps go well outside of that range. They seem to be very conservative on their temp range on the specs, but I understand if that still doesn't give you the warm and fuzzy about purchasing one.
Few things, make sure HDR is enabled. That helps with some back lighting issues. Also I would also suggest turning off the LDC (Lens distortion correction). It gives wider field of view for the camera.
I have a G4 Doorbell, and do use the custom messages on the little screen managed through my Homeseer home automation hub. These scenarios are when my wife activates the scene when she is trying to get the baby to take a nap, the event disables the doorbell, and changes the message to let people know that the baby is napping and to send us a text. In later iterations of the automation I enabled person detection and had it send me a push notification when a person is detected and the doorbell is off so I can be notified discreetly that there is someone at the door without waking the baby. I really would love to have some kind of attention-getting animation so if a person is detected, I can have some animation occur to draw their attention to the screen so they can read the message, if not, like you said, the screen is hard to read and I doubt many even see it.
Under the doorbell settings there was a “Do not disturb” option…have they finally added that as a way to silence the indoor chime, say, while a baby is sleeping? 🤞🏼
In this scenario I've setup a smart outlet for the digital chime that can be programmed as a scene to be performed manually or on a scheduled routine which powers off the digital chime. Works great with many retail doorbells that have IoT voice command integration through your preferred flavor like Alexa, Hey Google or Siri. DnD inside UniFi Protect would be a nice feature enhancement and should be relatively easy to implement given Nest, Ring and others can disable the chime relay inside the doorbell configuration via settings app.
I wish UI would figure out a way to expand their operating temperature window. In MN, USA, winters very often have stretches well below 14*, and summers can definitely go over 104*. This past winter during a cold period, my older UI doorbell decided it would lag roughly 5 seconds from doorbell push to ring, and would reboot itself when the chime actually rang. UI didn't really have anything to say other than "those are the defined temps" and when pushed, just had me RMA it.
Yeah, operating temp is a deal breaker for me. My front door is on the south side of the house and is hit by the sun most of the day. In Arkansas between July and September most days are around 106 degrees with a real feel of 115 degrees. Most electronics that I own give me an over heat warning when sitting in direct sunlight which is where this door bell will sit. 🫤 I might still buy it to try it. But I have a feeling that I will have to return it.
@@biigsmokee using the first generation nest doorbell. I found a good deal. It works fine in the summer heat. But it has issues when it gets below 40 degrees fahrenheit. I'm glad I got it cheap because it doesn't have playback, or the ability to record surveillance footage. It takes forever to load the app so people often have already gone by the time I'm able to speak to them. Since there is no play back, I never know who rang my doorbell. If it weren't for the fact that I set up a second security camera on my front door, I wouldn't have any idea what happened. My security camera is Ubiquiti. I already have a Ubiquiti NVR. After my experience with Nest, I'm going to continue saving up for the Ubiquiti Doorbell.

@@gourdbox I have zero complaints! It has withstood Wyoming winter temps well below it’s rated range. It is fairly protected by the porch area of our home otherwise.

I live in North Texas where ambient summer temp's regularly are in the mid 100's. I also get direct sunlight on my doorbell for about 2-3 hours in the late afternoon. Burned through 2 Ring Pro doorbells years ago and they are rated for up to 120º F. I switched to a Nest Hello doorbell over 3 years ago and have had with zero issues from it-and it's only rated for 104º like Ubiquiti's are. I've been wanting to switch to on-premise storage so I may give this a shot.
there appears to be a new version of the G4 doorbell Pro sold as a kit. it doesn't seem to be able to use the old doorbell wires, and I'm unsure if it has USBC input either. It does look like it has direct POE to the device now though. Comes with a POE chime.
I have the G4 Doorbell at my current house and am ordering the new Pro version for my new house, the single reason for the Pro is that it can do POE. I'm adamant that some of the delay / lag from the doorbell is partly because of the WiFi connection.
Blimey, had set up for stock alerts on UI notify for the EU store back in April, finally this morning G4 doorbell Pro back in stock!! Logged in within 3 min and…sold out! Aarghhh hope UniFi will get this stock sorted soon.
Sad to hear about the speaker size/volume still lacking. I would not blame the form factor. Any decent smartphone has speakers that would suffice, no? It would be great if you could add a direct comparison with the non-pro version. I've seen other reviews mentioning that it's at least greatly improved. Another thing I wonder about is the POE adapter. Is it still possible to connect the chime wires to trigger a physical chime? I assume so, just that it won't be powered that way. Thanks for a great channel!
regular G4 doorbell 100% detects packages but doesn't send notifications. I've had package smart detections show up but no notifications ( with global package notifications turned on)
18:31 Nice… it even crops the thumbnail down to the package which was way offset in the frame. Now that’s nice attention to detail! Quality touch there, I like it.
Thank you for your very good review. Rather than using a screen for useless texting to the visitors, I'd prefer to use the audio feature to play pre-recorded audio messages. That would be very handy and would avoid sticking Postits on the front door 🙂
talking about the potential suboptimal upper operational temperatures of 40°C... This thing is black and in direct sunlight I would expect that it goes way over the max Op-Temp even on a 20°C but sunny summer day.
Thank you for your review. However I have not seen you show how long it takes for you to be able to see the video once the push notification happens on the phone. I just got this royal POS and I am blown away how bad it is. While the notification on the phone comes about 1 second after the button is pushed, the video takes upwards of 20 seconds to come up. BTW I am using the poe adapter to power and connect to it. And yes, you are right, the speaker sound is atrocious.
104 degrees? If that is accurate I'm very disappointed I have a modest home network with Ubiquiti equipment. I just added a Cloud Key Gen2 Plus and was thinking of installing Protect with a Doorbell Pro but it won't work where I live in AZ. It regularly gets well above 104 degrees and that's just ambient air temperature let alone direct sunlight; which my front door gets in the afternoon. My Ring Doorbell Pro 2's operating temperature is -5ºF to 120ºF and even then when it's in direct sunlight I get the little fan icon in the Ring app. Video will still work but the other features won't. I'd say it hits 130 in direct sunlight, that would melt the G4 I assume. Plus it's huge IMO.
Just got one of these, setting it up and testing it now: would be cool if they added the ability to play pre-recorded messages specific to certain events and times of day, etc.
do you have to have infared enabled for the path light and package detection? Pretty sure you do for the light but not 100% for the package detection as its not that reliable. only detected 2 packages so cant confirm also not getting text notications on those two package detections...
Their video for this camera says you can unlock your door with fingerprints and NFC but they have no information regarding that. Perhaps this is still off in the future even though their videos are marketing it? I'll likely wait until I can unlock my door with it before I get one.
Looking at one of these, but don't have power at the door. Notifications look much quicker and better than Ring. I noticed that they've release / EA PoE input cable.
due regulation I don't think it will support POE, UI designs specifically for North Americans where archaic things like AC mains-powered doorbells are still a thing.
They do have a PoE to USB-C adapter for this product already. This is the main reason many people want the Pro. It’s currently only available in the Ubiquiti EA store though.
If you need it to run over POE, get a 24-volt POE injector, have one ended the cable on an RJ45 going straight into the POE portion of the injector on the other end have the blue-and-white go on one terminal and have the brown and white on the other terminal on the doorbell unit. Works for me when I have no choice
Thanks for the video Chris! I finally got my Unifi Doorbell G4 Pro! I've been trying purchase it since early July, As for feature requests... Since the Unifi Doorbell G4 Pro has built in Bluetooth it would be nice if the Unifi Doorbell G4 Pro could send its audio to a Bluetooth speaker for better audio quality. Thanks again for your videos! Here's a couple beers for you! 🍻🍻
This is one of the cases where something's 100% focused on the American market: no door opener functionality if you have an actual gate and are not have your house door freely available for everyone to reach. No functionality for a fixed mount monitor inside the house. No functionality for hooking it to a fixed mount comm inside the house. This really only works If you have it directly next to your front door and then the only extra value is to not have your package stolen because you don't have a fence.
Great video. When someone rings the doorbell and that notification you receive on the phone can you press that to open the camera to see the live view and how fast is it to view the camera can you also open the doorbell camera and view live feed at any time
I would like to see Unifi come out with a digital chime box to go along with their doorbell. Have it PoE and the signal managed through the UI system. That way people with larger properties could have it at the gate on a PtP setup and be notified back at the house.
Seems to be the same issues as Ring Doorbell? App response delay and speaker issue. Package camera is really not needed. You will get notify either way anyway (by email, text, or just doorbell activation. And as noted on the video, it has to be in specific area. You can't predict where the package will be left at.
I am curious how good the cameras work In the winter? Not just the door bell but the G4, G4 pro I’m looking at using them in Northern Indiana and I really don’t want them to stop working.
That's fine as long as you sign up for paid version of the "Uinotify" service. If not, then you can't specifically tell it what product you want to get the notifications for.
I’d like to see them have a battery option (like Aqara) for people who don’t have Doorbell wiring, and can’t run a USBC, etc cable. More HomeKit support from Ubiquity in general would also be nice.
Typical, Most stuff from Ubiquiti Is offered elsewhere before being available in Canada. Hell, there isn't an early access section offered in the Canada store. You have to log into the US or Europe store to see what's coming out.
Great material! Has anyone tried using an internal video terminal for this? I mean one that would be accessible not just from a phone or tablet, but also from a simple screen that could be operated by children who don’t have either a phone or a tablet.
Why do they never show the chime adapter installation. This has been one of the biggest issues getting your chime to work with the adapter supplied. Is there polarity on the wires black or grey....
Is there no WDR(wide dynamic range) setting for the doorbell camera? Even D-WDR would help quite a bit for being able to see faces better under the shaded porch
My package detection goes off when the wind blows a plant or yard flag. They don't allow you to set a detection zone on the downward facing camera. This needs a software update badly!
It puzzles me why Unifi did not bump the doorbell camera to 2k (like the G4 Instant) given device size and give the package camera the same FoV as the accompanying doorbell camera. A package left at Chris’s front door would not be visible on either camera.
How’s the software support for the thumbprint reader? I’ve got an existing smart lock that can be controlled over an api so it’d be really cool if I could get the fingerprint reader to open the door.
One thing I didn't see mentioned is that you have the option to also dewarp the video of the main camera to remove "most" of the fish-eye effect of the camera lens.
Any idea why the image of the doorbell kept adding a black fuzz to your face? Thought the lens was dirty at first but when your face left that position the fuzz was gone. Strange.
Is there ay special setup that needs to take place to access the live video ( such as when the doorbell rings) when you are not on the local network ? Or does it pretty much function like the ring doorbell remotely?
My Niece had a Ring doorbell and when she sold her townhouse the new owners wanted the doorbell. With the short supply of the Unifi doorbell pro i would have a hard time not taking it with me
What is the meaning of "Dual-band WiFi and GbE* connectivity"? Does the adapter "UACC Adapter DBAC" and "UACC Adapter DBPOE" only support power or ethernet too?
FINALLY was in stock last Sunday, ordered and installed with Ethernet POE adapter. I started watching ever since they posted early access. For some reason the downward facing package camera stopped working it’s just blank. Any clues?
hmm about the poe to usb adapter, can you limit the access of the used port for network connection to only the g4? or can you plug in everything you like into the ethernet port and be inside the network? i am not that good with the unifi stuff yet. i just think this would be a quite vulnerable spot for your network if someone knows this he can basically hit it from the wall an then attach to your networtk and do who knows what.
Chris thanks for your review ! Im just wondering if they added some kinda filter on the mic since the sound of cars seems to less louder then on my normal G4. Im living near a busy streat and on the G4 i was unable to hear people talk through the passing cars but with the PRO version that sound of cars is heavily decreased and kinda weird sound.
Hey, can you connect this camera to the access control? I need an outdoor doorbell/ camera and access system but the Access Control Starter Kit is not fully weather proof but I also need a system that I can remotely allow entry into the property. Your help will be much appreciated.
Does anyone know if there's an Alexa skill out of the box that allows chimes and video feeds to come through the echo show devices? Without having to do some work around?
Hi, can the USBc port be used to hardwire the doorbell with a USBc to ethernet connector? like what I have on my Mac? would be great if wifi was an issue.
Great video! Thanks for all the details. Is the package detection the only reason why you said it is worth the upgrade? Over here no one has a porch to receive packages on. If you are not home, drivers will either deliver the package to your neighbours or at a drop-off store. At the moment, there are no future features yet that we can use, so ... I'm still not convinced to upgrade.
I would have liked to seen the notification time to your phone through cellular. I looks wifi was turned on and therefore being on the same network should have fast time. A real world to see response when your away from home would be nice. That has been one of my biggest issues with ring is extremely long notification times when not on same network.
That's not how Push notifications work. Which network you're connected to is irrelevant... the notifications are coming from an external notification server, not directly from the device to your phone.
I’m not so sure that’s true. I think I can be on the same network with no internet to my phone as well as the doorbell… and I think I can still get a notification.
Shortsightedness for Ubiquiti. They should have made the screws the same locations as the old doorbell since many will upgrade. Also, they need to offer way more angle options. I had to get a 70 degree angle bracket third party. And now with the larger size I’d have to wait for the aftermarket to catch up again. Ugh. Not that it matters. Ubiquiti can’t actually sell any of their new products anyway. They are all always sold out.
But there is still no support for a wireless chime. I have never had a wired doorbell and I’m not putting in wiring from my circuit breaker box just to power a chime. This seems a big opportunity missed, especially as it does everything else wirelessly.
4:17 that black box is required so it can deliver power to the doorbell if it's connected to a chime. Doorbells chimes are designed to short the connection to ring the chime.
When someone rings the doorbell and that notification you receive on the phone can you press that to open the camera to see the live view and how fast is it to view the camera can you also open the doorbell camera and view live feed at any time
Those operating temperatures are ridiculous. I’m not sure there are many places in the states that don’t hit either the upper or lower threshold.
UI is sold in more countries than just the USA....
@@Fullion-CA no kidding?! I bet many of those countries also experience temperatures outside the listed thresholds!
I just went to unifi to check the price on this.... holy molly, this stuff is an investment:)))
I would like to see Unifi come out with a digital chime box to go along with their doorbell. Have it PoE and the signal managed through the UI system. That way people with larger properties could have it at the gate on a PtP setup and be notified back at the house.
More traditional home devices really should be redesigned with PoE.
Sign up for the Early Access program. (free) You may see something you like there. ;)
Are these cameras proprietary to UniFi Protect or will they work with other NVR's like Blue Iris?
Uinotify helped me buy the G4 Pro Doorbell while it was in stock for 3 minutes some time ago
You are lucky. That is like winning the lottery.
That's fine as long as you sign up for paid version of the "Uinotify" service. If not, then you can't specifically tell it what product you want to get the notifications for.
My g4 pro has stopped being detected online. Only the backlight diodes are lit. It does not respond to the reset button. Tell me what can be done?
I’d like to see them have a battery option (like Aqara) for people who don’t have Doorbell wiring, and can’t run a USBC, etc cable. More HomeKit support from Ubiquity in general would also be nice.
I live in Canada and the old doorbell is now in stock BUT the PRO is not even offered :(
Typical, Most stuff from Ubiquiti Is offered elsewhere before being available in Canada.
Thanks for the awesome review. I had to order that shirt!
I'll keep my non-pro for a little while longer. Thanks for the review Chris!
Would like to get one once it's available. Hopefully before my Google subscription expires. Another good video Chris.
Is there maybe an extra Zone for the "normal" Cam to add Package Detection (like for Person or Car)?
Why do they never show the chime adapter installation. This has been one of the biggest issues getting your chime to work with the adapter supplied. Is there polarity on the wires black or grey....
Yep, 104°F is a non starter. The "in the shade" temperature here gets hotter than that, let alone if the sun's shining on it.
Does the doorbell send a photo notification, my Ring doorbell does and I think it's a useful feature.
How to get it to work with Homekit? I’d like to be able to get the alerts on my Apple TV. Thanks
In stock?
OH, that's a fantasy chanel, got it!
My Niece had a Ring doorbell and when she sold her townhouse the new owners wanted the doorbell. With the short supply of the Unifi doorbell pro i would have a hard time not taking it with me
Will this work without any other unifi products. I plan on upgrading to Unifi products, but little by little and I need a reliable doorbell now.
Any clues?
I already have a G5 camera on my porch, but want to upgrade to 2 way audio. Should I buy the G4 Pro Doorbell, G5 Dome or AI Pro bullet ?
hmm about the poe to usb adapter, can you limit the access of the used port for network connection to only the g4? or can you plug in everything you like into the ethernet port and be inside the network? i am not that good with the unifi stuff yet.
i just think this would be a quite vulnerable spot for your network if someone knows this he can basically hit it from the wall an then attach to your networtk and do who knows what.
What happened to My Alerts in Unifi Protect?
3:22 and I’m rolling on the floor 🤣
With the Optional POE Adaptor can this be hardwired instead of using Wifi on it or is it just to Power the Camera.
Hey, can you connect this camera to the access control? I need an outdoor doorbell/ camera and access system but the Access Control Starter Kit is not fully weather proof but I also need a system that I can remotely allow entry into the property. Your help will be much appreciated.
What type of chime and transformer do you have to make the doorbell work? I am having a time trying to get my g4 to power up.
i have a 2nd doorbell button at my fence, is it possible to connect it to the g4?
So it doesn’t have HDR to help with those bright background situations?
Does anyone know if there's an Alexa skill out of the box that allows chimes and video feeds to come through the echo show devices?
Without having to do some work around?
How's the response to play video on your Phone when someone rings your Doorbell ? is it fast enough to see the person infront your door ?
Hi, can the USBc port be used to hardwire the doorbell with a USBc to ethernet connector? like what I have on my Mac? would be great if wifi was an issue.
And any information about availability of alexa skill?
Great video! Thanks for all the details.
Is the package detection the only reason why you said it is worth the upgrade?
Over here no one has a porch to receive packages on. If you are not home, drivers will either deliver the package to your neighbours or at a drop-off store.
At the moment, there are no future features yet that we can use, so ... I'm still not convinced to upgrade.
I would have liked to seen the notification time to your phone through cellular. I looks wifi was turned on and therefore being on the same network should have fast time. A real world to see response when your away from home would be nice. That has been one of my biggest issues with ring is extremely long notification times when not on same network.
interested to see how fast the push notification is when you arent on the same network as the doorbell
Great video and presentation but how are the records managed?
Is the pro prone to the same issues as the g4? Like rebooting, physical chime and cold weather issues ?
