Whenever I'm looking into how to play a song on guitar, I do a quick search on RUclips. As soon as I see this guy's face, I know it's the only video I need to watch to learn to play it correctly.
Great, I have been trying to learn that from Marty for a time now. He never just taught it correctly like you did. Thank for the gift of that song. I finally got it.
Marty is an absolute joke lmao, he makes videos for people who want to learn simplified songs without actually learning guitar, never ever watch any of his “tutorials”
It’s worth mentioning that Duane Allman played the lead part with Eric at 4:00. Duane fingered the first phrase normally like Eric, but he then used the slide for the notes in the second phrasing of that lead passage. It’s hard to distinguish the two guitars because for some reason when they were in the studio they used one mic for both guitar amps, so both guitars are on a single track instead of 2 separate tracks.
Duane also came up with the riff that the whole thing is based on. He lifted it directly from the Albert King song "As The Years Go Passing By". You can hear the original melody here: ruclips.net/video/b3Gxg3cEcKU/видео.html
I’m just shy of my two year mark and I can’t thank you enough for all your lessons. Wouldn’t be anywhere near where I am if it wasn’t for you. Can’t thank you enough!
Thank you my teacher. You teached me guitar from zero. I am a 1 year guitarist and what ı can play you teached it to me. Thanks my lord.Writing from Turkey then I am sorry my bad english.
@Francis Serra Your criticisms (plural because I assume you leave similar comments elsewhere) add nothing of value. What are you hoping to achieve? Unless you have a lesson video of your own to show the world how it should be done, kick rocks.
The intro is actually four different guitar tracks, played by both Duane and Eric. The first bar-lick in the lower position is paralleled with an octave up played in the 7th position. Both end in a hold-tone for three bars, the powerchords appear on a seperate track. Finally the 12th position stuff is played on another, the fouth, track. Which track is played by whom is a matter of a debating for decades. Same is true for the question which of the intro tones are actually picked, hammered or pulled off. No matter how you do it, it never seems quite right. We'll never know ...
This is my favourite song of all time, and the reason I started to learn the guitar. Thank you for demystifying it for me. Looking at the sheet music looks like there's more barbed wire than the DMZ. Cheers!
Its mental what a good tutorial can do. Before when he played it fast i was about to click off thinking ill never be able to do that no point trying. But carrying on and seeing the slow tutorialized version i can now sort of play it through with only a few dull notes cause my chubby arse fingers keeping hitting the other frets. Thats mate. I will keep coming back to your vids
I have seen a lot of lessons on this song on RUclips. But Carl as always brings a little something extra to the lesson> Not sure if it's his teaching style or maybe his playing. But I always get a little extra even if it's a song I already know. But LslashC97 is spot on a full lesson would be great!
With all due respect to the other guitar teachers on youtube, this channel and Guitar Pilgrims channel are the go to channels before anyone else!!!!👍👍👍👍👍
Great lesson, much appreciated. One thing that caused me some cofusion though, on the high part of the riff the 10th fret E string IS the 15th fret B string. There actually the exact same same note. This cause confusion because I thought the riff was different on the second phrase, when it's totally the same riff note wise. I'm going to continue to play it on the 15th fret B string twice. Thanks again for the lesson, I've been trying to hear that low part of the intro for years! 😄
You didn't mention what pickup selection you used but seeing on your guitar it seems like it is bridge pickup. Maybe useful for getting that bright tone in this intro. The way you explain these songs just makes them easier to learn. Didn't knew I would be able to play half of the riff within a day. Just can't thank you enough for making these classics.
Sometimes the same thing happens to me. I have found the best thing you can do is get that melody in your head and try to match the notes you're playing with the melody
Bit late to the party here, but thanks for a great lesson. One thing is that when you try and play along with the original recording it all seems to be played a semitone higher. Assuming Clapton didn't use a capo, does anyone know what tuning he used for the recording, was it just tuned up a semitone?
"Clapton originally wrote "Layla" as a ballad, with lyrics describing his unrequited love for Boyd, but the song became a "rocker" when, according to Clapton, Duane Allman composed the song's signature riff."
Carl; you ever thought about doing the octave jump like this: set up on the 13th fret like a " 3string F chord " and play your "A" ,, "C" , "D" , "F" notes like an F with the D note hammering in like an F6 ? Don't have to move around , just hammer in with your pinkie like an F transitioning to a D minor and back to an F ? .
Hell Yeah! Nailed it, Thnk you for helping a soul who needed these vibratos in my bones. your the Hero of the day Carl keep up the great work of getting these frequencies into our air...Peace n Love...
I love your videos you are my always my go to teacher for lessons. I just watched Beatos video, Brfeaking Down Layla and he plays the opening riff at the 5th fret on the low E and A string. Your way is simpler and sounds great, any thoughts as to why he plays it like that, which way does Clapton play it?
A great instructional clip, I have also being learning Purple haze from another of your clips. I am sure I will be learning from a great many more of your films. Many thanks Carl.
in the intro riff i can not pick the 6th note in time (the 3rd fret a string after the hammer-on and pull of on the d string) any tips :/?should i just hammer the 3rd fret but not pick it?
Hi, can I ask you, what amp settings do you use for Layla? Ofc i got different amp and guitar, but if you would write me some information, or maybe direct amp setts, so i can start to try to catch the right or near sound to it? Thank you, and btw great video
To properly play this requires two guitars, as it was recorded, and as it is performed. Playing both parts on one guitar is possible, but it sounds choppy.
Whenever I'm looking into how to play a song on guitar, I do a quick search on RUclips. As soon as I see this guy's face, I know it's the only video I need to watch to learn to play it correctly.
You and me both bro. Even though. I’m like 5 thumbs sometime. I finally get it because of him.
Same same. Always the best.
I agree he is damn good but sometimes moves too fast
Same Lol
My thoughts exactly,You'all know it! Thank you for what you do, there is no comparison, when it comes to 365 and C.B.'skills at getting it right.
This guy is amazing! Wow, what a fantastic instructor. No ego, no over zealous BS- just right to the meat of the matter

I like that you have no filler and get straight to the lesson

That's got to be one of the most famous guitar riffs. It sounded perfect. Thank you for teaching it.
i can honestly say this is the best online guitar lesson ive come across. great job
Something that should be mentioned is that the original is two guitars Eric & Duane
playing off eachother
@Aslin Fire Safety wrong, you have it backwards
@Layla Powell-harrison so a seizure, got it
@Francis Serra Your criticisms (plural because I assume you leave similar comments elsewhere) add nothing of value. What are you hoping to achieve? Unless you have a lesson video of your own to show the world how it should be done, kick rocks.

Guys, Carl Brown is the MAN when it comes to guitar lessons. Most of the stuff I know is from his videos.
Its mental what a good tutorial can do. Before when he played it fast i was about to click off thinking ill never be able to do that no point trying. I have seen a lot of lessons on this song on RUclips. But Carl as always brings a little something extra to the lesson> Not sure if it's his teaching style or maybe his playing. Just can't thank you enough for making these classics.
when i play this song, the starting bit doesn't sound at all like how its sounds when you play it faster! any tips??
i realized i wasnt hammering but picking two times the string for each note instead of one and hammering the second. maybe thats what it is?
Sometimes the same thing happens to me. I have found the best thing you can do is get that melody in your head and try to match the notes you're playing with the melody

Haven't thought this great song could be played with these simple notes! Great lesson again.

Very accurate and very easy to follow. Thanks for your patience and slow methodical explanation. I appreciate it.

Thank u for your videos!!!! You are an awesome teacher! Thanks
Best guitar lessons. Thank you so much man.
The best Eric Clapton riff that wasn't written by Clapton
Прекрасно! Просто прекрасно!! С урока "Moth Into Flame" меня занесло сюда, хотя собирался на "Hardwired". ОЧЕНЬ доходчиво всё объясняется!

in the intro riff i can not pick the 6th note in time (the 3rd fret a string after the hammer-on and pull of on the d string) any tips :/?should i just hammer the 3rd fret but not pick it?
Ah, the bends. You don't want them when you're diving but you sure want them in your rock n' roll haha
The riff was played by Dwayne Allman on the studio recording
No kidding I did not know that. Wonder why ...shits n grins?
I've been playinh 6 months. Is it a waste of time to try to learn this now?
