I have an electric guitar and a crush on my friend Layla. I will do what I must...
Edit: I'm almost done learning the intro.
I think I'm gonna play it on her birthday
Edit 2: She got a boyfriend before I even had the chance to play the song.
    But not everything is lost
Edit 3: They broke up! I'm not sure how to feel about that....
I'm taking some guitar classes too. I need to speed up my learning, school is getting hard.
Edit 4 (2024, like 4 years later damn) : Well I'm not really sure what to really say here but, I did it! I did played (most) of the song for her back in the day. She loved it, we were just kids and she was moving away soon anyway so things never managed to get very far. But I know she loved it and just seeing her happy with what I did was awesome, she really did had me on my knees back then I suppose. Anyway, I moved on from all of that a long time ago but I still love playing. Don't give up guys.

I've always loved that Marty plays a demo of what he's going to teach BEFORE the lesson. There are SO many guitar lessons on RUclips where people just get right into the song without playing it through first. It really annoys me bc you have no idea if the instructor is even playing it right. You may want a 100% accurate version when the instructor is actually playing a very simplified one. Then you play through it an realize it's not the lesson you were looking for. So, thanks for always doing that!!

I love that part from 12:30 to 12:45. Marty off camera humming the part he's about to teach next. And then a classic "Ouch dammit" before continuing the lesson. Probably stayed in there accidentally but it's just beautiful. These things make people sympathetic.

Hey Marty, I just want to say a big thank you! 10 years ago I got a rip off Strat, a 15W amp, jumped on RUclips and binged watched your old school videos! You were the reason I kept up with guitar as you always broke it down so easy and simple! I don't really watch RUclips stuff for guitar lessons anymore but I jumped on to see if I could find some solos to learn and you popped up! Nostalgia! From me and many many others, thank you! Your a great teacher and put out so much great content!

In my first month I’ve learned the basic 12 bar blues, sweet home Alabama, Knockin on heavens door, seven nation army, iron man, the first half of the iconic tapping in eruption, and now I’ve learned everything except the verse on Layla after 30 minutes in this video. Without you I don’t think I would’ve learned guitar so quickly.

I know this sounds bad...but just use your ears and you will get better at it. For fast things slow it down on the youtube player and it should be easy to figure things out. Chords are another story but if you are not trying to hear jazz chords it should be relatively easy.

BEN, thanks, I can figure out some more simple songs, it just takes time to get better at. But some tunes like Rush or Kansas type songs can be quite hard. Always looking for some tips.

I know that feeling looking for tips^^but then Im like... all those legends figured it out by ear and they got pretty good at it because of it. In the beginning I always sticked to tabs but now I try not to use lessons and tabs (except when Im lazy :D)

Another awesome lesson. I love going through your vids of songs I taught myself in the past and correcting all the mistakes and bum notes I've been doing for years - I've been playing the intro chords to this wrong since about 1997! I do still do the intro lick differently to you - my picking isn't too fast so I find on the 6th note, the C on the A string, a good aggressive hammer without picking lets me play the lick at full speed while giving me the breathing space to pick the open D cleanly without fumbling. Anyway keep doing what you are doing - best guitar teacher on the internet!
