Undertale Trash I also heard that he wanted to design a Paris Opera House and wasn’t able to, so he made a deal with the architect of this opera house to build an underground lair.
Those are lifted from the original Phantom single that was released prior to the live show in 86. The song also features different lyrics amd has Steve Harley singing the Phantom's part.
The only experience with music Gerard Butler had before making this film was singing in a rock band while he was studying to be a lawyer. He actually took singing lessons just for this film and god damn it payed off.
Can we talk about how intense and goosebump inducing it was to see the phantom keep looking back at Christine, as he pulls her through the mirror and leads her down to his lair? It’s like he’s checking to see that she’s still following him, before turning to look our direction with the most satisfied and proud, “she is mine” looking smile/smirk. It’s so brilliantly directed and believable and makes my heart pound so fast that I get almost light headed 🥺😍 can’t stop watching this scene 🥰🥰🥰🎶👏🏻
@HermicraftAddict Finally someone who puts it into words in the right way! Agreed! Very few realizes that it's cinema, we're not in a theater even though it's a stage play adaptation.
Fun fact: the living hands holding the candelabras at 0:06 are an homage to Jean Cocteau’s 1946 film Beauty and the Beast. In the film, the hallways of the Beast’s castle are filled with these same living candelabras, moving to light the way for Belle. It’s a beautiful and haunting bit of production design. Obviously, the Phantom and the Beast share the same Parisian interior decorator.
And they both share struggles. Both of them have been rejected because of their appearance and they allowed it to seep into their soul. Both of them ended up seeming either wicked, or insane, when there is actually more underneath. The only difference is that on of them actually is a supernatural being (The Beast) and the other is merely confused for one (The Phantom).
+Sariah Bowman (Ice) I think he's incredibly handsome and I actually really like his voice. I certainly wouldn't mind him singing to me! He got a lot of hate because his voice is not what people who have seen the stage show are accustomed to hearing, but I think it works very well for the character.
I think he took a few lessons, but not that many. But if you consider how vocally challenging the role he played was, that says something about how talented he is. I think he could have done a little better with his singing if he'd taken a few more lessons, but I can forgive that. I love Gerard as the phantom, and that's not going to change.
I hate that so many people have hated on this rendition of phantom of the opera; honestly, I find this movie version to be the best of ALL the versions that have ever been made (and I'm including the musicals along with this); to me this showed far more of the humanity that was hidden within the "Phantom" and even made him more of a worthy protagonist than Christine and Raul; a stellar performance by Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum for sure (even though Rossum didn't do many movies/musicals, this was an awesome performance)
Sorry, I disagree. To have seen the glorious play a dozen times live in L. A. with Sarah Brighton & Michael Crawford was magical! It was such an immense part of the 'So Cal' feel that it's final show made headlines in The L. A. Times. Bravo, Sir Andrew!
I have only ever seen this version. However, I agree with you. Gerard Butler will always be The Phantom in my mind and Emmy Rossum will always be Christine Daae
Phantom: ok ok I've got it! Every time we come down here we are going to sing this song!" Christine: what's the song?!" Phantom:" ...my wicked cool theme song..."
Christine: "You want to sing a song that is literally all about how awesome you are and nothing else, *and* you want me to lead into it?" Phantom: "I don't see a problem."
I can barely hit it, it sounds so ridiculously strained and breathy but I'm up there, and I'm so happy about it! I want to sing this song so bad, and in a year I'll be singing it!,
I know Gerard Butler always gets critisised for his role, but I don't think you can even think of him as playing the exact same role that Michael Crawford and Colm Wilkinson did in the original production. He is playing a different version of the role with a different tone that is a different take on the phantom. I think when looking at it that way, he does a good job.
I agree. Every person who plays the phantom brings something new. There are better trained singers who've played the role, but I haven't seen so much of an emotional range from an actor playing the phantom then I have with Gerard Butler. People Ramin Karimloo is the best because he's a trained actor and singer, and while Ramin he's my second favorite phantom, Gerard will always be the one who's versions of various phantom songs, particularly music of the night, that I listen to..
The weird thing is, I don't think any of them went for the original adaptation of the Phantom being a bitter homicidal maniac. That would have been so cool to see.
@@alexandrazisk7091 Same. There's a raw... depth you get from his Phantom/Erik that you just don't get so much with the others. The rest seem too worried about the technique and difficulty to really get into the emotion of it. Ramin (aside from Lon, obvi, given the medium at the time) is the only one who comes close for me. It takes a lot to connect with such a deeply troubled character.
Very much agreed. I have always preferred this deeper and darker performance. I feel his lower tone adds to the villainy of the character as well, bringing out a malevolence that the stage lacks in casting their higher tenors
+Valeria Valles The horse bothers you but not the candelabras rising out of the water and spontaneously lighting in like 1800s - or earlier - France? I always assumed this was a warped sequence from Christine's POV since later in the film when they go down into the catacombs the 'arm torches' aren't really there, for starters.
Gerard Butler is and always will be my favorite Phantom. The raw emotion in his voice and the creepy acting... Perfect Phantom, if you ask me! 10/10!!!!
I mean, when you think of it, Phantom took Christine on one hell of a date! He took her on a candlelit walk, on a horse back ride, on a gondola ride, too a musical, and then back to his candlelit house for some more wooing, all in one night! Oh, and he also proposed! That could have been left out perhaps, but still... step up your game, gents!
I think I know why. Some of an artists best work is based upon reality. Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the songs specifically for Sarah Brightman, to fit her voice. They were married for a few years, and when you think about it, they were kind of like the Phantom and Christine in a very loose and general sense, I don’t mean Lloyd Webber was a madman living beneath an opera house. A musical genius, in love with a singer, his inspiration, his own angel of music. I think there's an incredible amount of real passion behind the songs, perhaps this one in particular.
Why did Christine have on black eyeshadow? When Erik picked her up she had none on. Did she bring her makeup with her on the boat or something? Like "oh shit okay I have to look good hold up lemme whip on some eyeshadow right quick!"
I am not a die hard opera fan, but I think it was a wise decision to cast Gerard. Because too much opera would make the movie a little "awkward". Also I think it makes them beautiful opposites. Besides. It's a movie, not a stage opera.
Making movies based on broadway musicals can be somewhat difficult because movies tend to favor acting over singing instead of singing over acting. I think Butler did a great job, here; his role and this movie in general is exactly what a “musical-to-movie” production should be like.
@@Howlingburd19 I know they dubbed Minnie Driver and I think it would've been better if they dubbed him too. He acted it so well but his vocals really let him down.
Notice how Christine is not wearing any make-up when she first walks with the Phantom, but by the end of the song, she is wearing make-up, symbolic of her blossoming from a naive teenager into a woman under the Phantom's influence.
And this is how a real man makes a female feel like a woman - no matter how crazy he is. But every time she's with Raoul she transforms back into a shy little girl in the kindergarten. (This is pretty obvious in the novel as well.)
Say what you want about Gerry's and Emmy's voices individually, but when they sing together, they're AH-MAZING. I can't get over how well they harmonize in this bridge! You can hear both of them clearly, Gerry's older, deeper baritone voice and Emmy's higher, younger soprano voice, but at the same time they manage to create such a beautiful balance between the two, and it sounds incredible! They do it in "Wandering Child" and "Point of No Return" as well, but this is definitely where their harmonization is the strongest.

Wow imagaine a real PHANTOMMMM in the OPERAAA HEHEHEHEHHE now thts creepy but cooollll! the Phantommmm of the opera is thereeee inside my mindddddd!
I love the detail in that when he starts singing her costume and makeup gets more glamorous. Which is line with the director saying some of this sequence and it’s romance is in christines head. We all imagine were wearing smoky eye when our crush appears 😂
The year was 2004 and I went to this movie as a teen. At first, it was like, this is weird but then this scene and the one after when Gerry was singing. I was in love. Years later I come back to this and love the music. Huge fan of Gerry, too, such underated talent and a funny guy. I saw one Broadway DVD and couldn't stomach it. Ends up I like movies not theater
My one complaint at the moment is the fact that they cut out the last verse. You know the one: In all your fantasies, You always knew, That man and mystery, Were both in you I always loved that verse of the song, and it's a shame that they cut it out in the cinematic version.
i'm sorry but this was literally the best from The Phantom of the Opera like seriously, Emmy's voice (AND THOSE HIGH NOTES, DAMN!!!), the rawness and absolute strength in Gerard's singing, AND THE MUSIC?? THANK YOU ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER FOR THIS SPECIFIC FILM I PRAISE YOU y'all can hate me for even liking this, considering it doesn't have too many positive reviews, but i personally absolutely love it and can we just take a moment and appreciate the electric guitar riffs? i loved those oml also, EXCUSE ME??? I never really paid attention to the plot of any of the movies, BUT I HAD NO IDEA THE PHANTOM'S NAME WAS ERIK????
Love Gerard Butler as the phantom best. Wonder why the filmmakers cut out the extra verse at the end. Must say, I like the original better because of that extra verse.
I love this song for 1. the different musical instruments makes this so good 2. the singing is so good, Christine and Eric's voices are perfected (to me) by Emmy and Gerard 3. just by the things there, I love the allusions and the magic of this place, and the way the sewer looks and the boat is amazing. It is hard to choose between music of the night, phantom of the opera, and the deleted scene no one would listen, but all of those are amazing!
It amazes me that he played the Phantom and did such an amazing roll (more of a romantic character). Then most of his rolls after that were more masculine, action type roles. If that makes sense to anyone.
Truly ROCKING TUNES!! Gerry and Emmy, which also did the singing make this film a masterpiece 💗 the cinematography, wardrobe, set and supporting cast were phenomenal. Why didn't Gerard Butler or Emmy Rossum or even Minnie Driver nominated for Academy Awards🤔 ... just outrageous
Did anyone else notice that in the beginning of this song she's wearing no eyeshadow, but by the time they are walking toward the horse and in Music of the Night she has on thick black shadow? Watch both clips from the movie and you'll see what I'm talking about.
Gerard butler is beyond awesome as both Leonidas and the phantom of the opera. To hell with that others say about this move. The movie was a masterpiece. I loved this move and the broadway show.
Amazing.... its amazing.... u can tell the Phantoms side of saddness and lonelyness. In this song just leisten to the tones and the saddness in it. While in "All I Ask Of You" it is a more... hoping and knowing that there is hope and peace...
i love the point of no return. its very passionate but also classy. and at the end when she gives back her ring, his version of masquerade was so good and sad.
My fav live theater show of all times. I saw this live 3x in Toronto in early 90's..Believe it was 1992 and this song being performed live just gives you shivers like you wouldn't believe...THIS IS ART
The horse in this scene is not in the musical but was a borrowed element from the book wherein Erik uses a horse named Cesar to transport Christine to the underground wharf where they would take a boat to the Phantom's lair.
Great song, great actors, great scene, great random horse in the midst of an underground dungeon Seriously why? It can't have been that long of a distance
I wish there were more close up scenes. The scenery is fantastic but a close up of the Phantom while he says "sing for me" it would have been orgasmic 😆😆
I love this movie I saw this movie when I was 18 in theaters and I fell in love with it. A remind me when I saw the phantom of the Opera play when I was a teenager. Emmy was a perfect for this as Christine and Gerard Butler he is so handsome in it and was young in this too. But they both did a good job.
This is how you kidnap a woman. Appear in her mirror, open a secret passage and lead her down a candle-filled hallway, put her on a horse and then a damn gondola ride as your candelabras and organ rise opposingly in the mist, all while singing an epic duet that is unknowingly forcing her mind to submit to sweet music. ...It also helps if the exposed half of your face looks like Gerard Butler.
I really like the Phantom movie. I do think it's odd how some lyrics were changed and some verses of songs were left out, but overall it's a pretty faithful adaptation of the amazing musical.
I've watched each and every other movie of the Phantom and this version is by far the best! There is so much passion and dedication in this movie it is absolutely the best!!!
I also love this movie and the 3 main characters of the Phantom of the Opera. They were perfect for this movie and I love their voices. I watch this movie all the time and I never get tired of watching over and over again. I think that it's such a great movie and this one is one of my many favorite movies that I love so much.
Say what you want, but I think they actually did a very good job. Sure, is not operatic. Like, at all. But is not supposed to be. It’s a movie. Besides, I’m still baffled that Emmy could sing those notes at that age.
I can't stop watching these clips. The music rips my heart out! I would so love it if You Tube would put this up for viewing but only with this version. They are the finest singers and actors and I've seen several. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

The only thing is I don’t think if he crashed a party the big music would go off DUNNNNNNNNNNNN DUH DUN DUNNA NA!
The French Revolution was in late 18th century
Dude read the book. It's absolutely fantastic.
Gerrard Butler is so hot and handsome i love him
I swear his voice is sooo hot you feel like you just want drown in every note and lyric that comes out of his mouth. I love the phantom
I think the cinematography in this movie is really overlooked. All of the sets and shots are brilliant!
Screw glee, this is real Vocal Adrenaline.
Hell yeah it is.
This is THE ORIGINAL Vocal Adrenaline 😂
My sister would be so pissed if she saw this comment 😂
You know the one:
In all your fantasies,
You always knew,
That man and mystery,
Were both in you
I always loved that verse of the song, and it's a shame that they cut it out in the cinematic version.
i'm sorry but this was literally the best from The Phantom of the Opera
like seriously, Emmy's voice (AND THOSE HIGH NOTES, DAMN!!!), the rawness and absolute strength in Gerard's singing, AND THE MUSIC?? THANK YOU ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER FOR THIS SPECIFIC FILM I PRAISE YOU
y'all can hate me for even liking this, considering it doesn't have too many positive reviews, but i personally absolutely love it
and can we just take a moment and appreciate the electric guitar riffs? i loved those oml
also, EXCUSE ME??? I never really paid attention to the plot of any of the movies, BUT I HAD NO IDEA THE PHANTOM'S NAME WAS ERIK????
If you like the movie, you should read the book! Your library probably has it!
@@dopeynhappy i hadn't read it at the time of my original comment but i have now!!! it's incredible lmao
Love Gerard Butler as the phantom best. Wonder why the filmmakers cut out the extra verse at the end. Must say, I like the original better because of that extra verse.
IndyGirl89 I'm so glad I'm not the only one who caught that. That last verse ties the song so well together
Nossa
Um link for the final verse or the lyric?
SportyPeach9891 omg yes u just realized that they didn’t sing in all ur fantasies u a,wuss knew that that man and mystery were both in u
I don't care what anyone says but I love that they cast Gerard as the Phantom. He's perfect for the role
Your profile picture is interesting, who drew it?
I love how he keeps looking back at her.
EDIT: Not to mention how great they sound together.

BAYUM DEFINITION OF SMEXY
+Estefany Bosques I LEGIT THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE!
Celeste M xD
Yup this is definitely my interpretation of smexy ;p
yus
Estefany B. Z. Sorry, what is "smexy"?
Did anyone else notice that in the beginning of this song she's wearing no eyeshadow, but by the time they are walking toward the horse and in Music of the Night she has on thick black shadow? Watch both clips from the movie and you'll see what I'm talking about.
When Erik waves the torch in front of Christine's face you can see that it changed...so I guess it's magic😂
I like its like a representation of her joining like the dark sidr
*side
+Emii64 Erik? hahahah
That is his name.
The Phantom looks totally dope with the mask, suit, and cape. 👍💪
Gerard butler is beyond awesome as both Leonidas and the phantom of the opera. To hell with that others say about this move. The movie was a masterpiece. I loved this move and the broadway show.
Agree 💯
I love when he helps her get off the horse .I hate when people make fun of it and hate it
Amazing.... its amazing.... u can tell the Phantoms side of saddness and lonelyness. In this song just leisten to the tones and the saddness in it. While in "All I Ask Of You" it is a more... hoping and knowing that there is hope and peace...
i love the point of no return. its very passionate but also classy. and at the end when she gives back her ring, his version of masquerade was so good and sad.
These actors both have added charm to their voices.
Manliest phantom I have heard in all incarnations.
My fav live theater show of all times. I saw this live 3x in Toronto in early 90's..Believe it was 1992 and this song being performed live just gives you shivers like you wouldn't believe...THIS IS ART
Absolutely magnificent movie Gerald butler's voice amazing he was a great phantom
The horse in this scene is not in the musical but was a borrowed element from the book wherein Erik uses a horse named Cesar to transport Christine to the underground wharf where they would take a boat to the Phantom's lair.
Great song, great actors, great scene, great random horse in the midst of an underground dungeon
Seriously why? It can't have been that long of a distance
A horse is there to be cool. And his name is Cesar!
The horse is a reference to the original novel
I absolutely adore this movie and I think the phantom is so handsome
And that's what a 16-octave voice sounds like. Emmy Rossum just nailed the part.
I am such a BIG FAN of the phantom of the opera
I love the organ for the phantom
I wish there were more close up scenes. The scenery is fantastic but a close up of the Phantom while he says "sing for me" it would have been orgasmic 😆😆
I think of this scene often lol! Forever obsessed!
It is amazing, this movie is far off from my usual choice of movies, yet it one of my favorites. Not to mention the song is fantastic
Amanda Martin mine as well
I love this movie I saw this movie when I was 18 in theaters and I fell in love with it. A remind me when I saw the phantom of the Opera play when I was a teenager. Emmy was a perfect for this as Christine and Gerard Butler he is so handsome in it and was young in this too. But they both did a good job.
I love this version of phantom of the opera
I love this song and its performers!!!! 😍😍😍😍😍
i've watched this movie over and over again
Emmy has fingernail goals man. I cry every time ;-;
The best musical I've ever seen. Gerard and Emmy are unbelievable❤️🔥
Gerard Butler is sooo sexy in this movie and his voice is soo good, I absolutley love this movie
He's not even a Phantom!! He's a werewolf with pink eye.
I also love this movie and the 3 main characters of the Phantom of the Opera. They were perfect for this movie and I love their voices. I watch this movie all the time and I never get tired of watching over and over again. I think that it's such a great movie and this one is one of my many favorite movies that I love so much.
Well said and I love it too!
Everyone talking about how beautiful the song and the scenery.
Me: How the heck did he get a horse in the catacombs?
It was brilliant that song is always in my head
This is my favorite version of The Phantom of The Opera
I can’t get over this movie now that I’ve finally watched it 🤩
Say what you want, but I think they actually did a very good job. Sure, is not operatic. Like, at all. But is not supposed to be. It’s a movie. Besides, I’m still baffled that Emmy could sing those notes at that age.
We watched this for our Theater Thursday activity in choir class. This song has such an eerie and dramatic vibe and I love it!
how do those candles stay lit when they were underwater?
they were rigged to light when they hit air
Matt Bevington And they had to get it in one take.
Magic ✨
@@mad_byrne you said my favorite answer
@@mad_byrne It's science
Many other men are great but they are often higher and the deeper growl of Butler keeps him my favorite!
I’ve watched phantom 32 times and often play the CD .. I’ll never get sick of this movie .. or glaring at Gerard Butler !! 💖
I have the CD too and yes Gerard is gorgeous in this movie 😍
An epic movie.oneof my favorites. Amazing story. Omg . Gerard butler is so handsome and a good singer as well.
People say Gerrard Butler's voice isn't good but bro its amazing and i think its better than the ones in the shows
I can't stop watching these clips. The music rips my heart out! I would so love it if You Tube would put this up for viewing but only with this version. They are the finest singers and actors and I've seen several. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
WOW! Gerard Butler has a lovely voice!
I do love this version. It's both beautiful and haunting.
I love her as Christie😍
Man I grew up watching and listening to this. I remember going to a live concert and being so stunned I couldn’t talk, my mom said I cried a bit
Okay I'm gonna say it...
10/10 film, I love it because I have an (OPINION)
You are not the only one with that opinion :)

Emmy Rossum & Gerard Butler have gr8 Chemistry plus EXQUISITELY schooled voices
I wish I can sing like this . Her voice is so beautiful.
I wanna bet that in theaters when the music for this started, everybody was just clapping and just like *”YESSSS”*
