Yes, especially since he won a Gold Medal as well as heavyweight championship (twice). He was a bit overshadowed by Ali's razzle dazzle at the time. He wasn't cocky and didn't have the tough guy persona, despite how much strength and skill he possessed. He had a beautiful heart and never compromised his integrity for any reason. He and his family were by my family's side through thick and thin, never leaving my parents' side until both of them died. He was a devout Catholic (as were my parents) and when he visited my mom in the hospital in the months before her death he would give communion to ALL of the bedridden Catholic patients in the hospital (ordained to do so). This is how he spent his life after boxing. He never, ever spoke of the tons of kind things he did for others; he was kind and humble and never wanted attention. I wish more people knew just how incredible he was, and still *is*.
He was Cus D'amato's best pupil not in terms of boxing but in character. Definitely Tyson was a better boxer but he forgot everything that cus taught him about life and character
This man was done so wrong and yet so cool about it. He clearly outboxed Jimmy Ellis, Joey Maxim and Jerry Quarry (twice). Only lost in his career to Liston, Ali & Ingemar Johansson (which he avenged twice by KO in rematches). And the thought that he had a ‘glass chin’ is overrated; he was only floored for a count of 10 once by the super strong Sonny Liston. And even in that fight, he got up more than twice after being floored. Anyone who says Floyd had a glass chin must not understand, usually when someone gets KO’ed by Liston, they don’t get back up to continue fighting! He was also a natural middleweight and a light eater who put on some pounds to be a light middleweight fighting heavyweight. To naturally be a middleweight but still get to be one of the greatest heavyweight champions?! Give this man his props!!
Floyd was around 168 pounds in 1980's. He used to walk around less than 175 in his championship years. He had to put on some weights to stay in heavyweight. I know this because he told me himself. He used to put gloves with me too. He was my legal guardian and I used to live inside his gym for years. He ate very little and he hated to eat meat. Floyd loved animals. He could live on sweet potatos only. That's basically all he could eat when he was a child and he was okay with it even after he became famous. He never took a day off. He was always helping people. He couldn't waste a day knowing that there are people suffering out there at this very moment. That was the way he was. It was Floyd who made Cus, never the other way around.
The judge for The Ellis' title fight was only one person and it was the referee Harold Valan and the SOB had been acquired by Angelo Dandy. A few years later, as Floyd and his wife Janet were eating at a hotel restaurant, Valan had the nerve to come and greet them at the table. When Floyd asked how much Valan had received from Dundy, Valan confessed that it was only $5,000. Floyd was respected and very loved in Sweden more than he was appreciated in his home country of USA. Ellis and Valan needed police escort to leave the arena. For the Maxim fight, the all 12 of 12 news paper reporters at the ringside voted almost shut out win for Floyd. For the Quarry 2 fights, the both times were action packed very good fights. Quarry knocked Floyd down early in the both fights, but Floyd dominated later on in both fights. The crowd went berserk and Quarry too needed police escort to leave the arena. Floyd actually had lost to only 3 men in his entire career. Johansson, Liston and Ali.

lunging 3-4 steps across the ring, with that kind of speed, that kind of power.. incredible. truly a great of the sport, and as a human being. R.I.P champion
I have been saying this for a decent amount of time and I will say it again Floyd Patterson is the one of the most underrated fighters ever he is the youngest undisputed heavyweight champion ever and the first heavyweight to regain the title. Great guy a true gentleman of boxing
I read his biography, hes was so shy and I guess so socially anxious that for every fight he use to bring a disguise in case he got kod, than he would wear it and go alone to his training camp for weeks! A really interesting personality
I have kept coming back to this video for years now, it's really great! Love the consecutive left hooks and combination punching, they are so fast and vicious! Patterson might be my favorite fighter!
Floyd Patterson is probably the fighter with the most elegant fighting style of all time. It's impressive how classy his style in the ring was. Patterson is one of the boxers who's fights i like to see the most. So fast, with so much speed on his hands, so intelligent in everything he would do. If he had a better chin, today he could be remembered as one of the 5 best heavyweights of all time, no doubt about it. Even not having that great chin, i consider him one of the 10 best heavyweights of all time. In one of the last positions of the list, but in it.
I think he's one of top pound 4 pound boxers. I don't see anyone beating him at lightheavy weight. Not Roy Jones, Not Bernard Hopkins, Not Archie Moore, No Ezzard Charles...
0Shane13 I think that Ezzard Charles would be capable beating Floyd Patterson, honestly. Ezzard was a very agressive, hard punching fighter. I believe that Ezzard would be capable of knocking out Floyd. But it would be a hell of a fight, and Floyd definitely would be capable of winning. On the light heavyweight list that you presented, i think that only Archie and Ezzard compete with Floyd for the nº1 position.
Floyd patterson is my favorite boxer of all time I like his combinations an his speed also the way he operates. He was a boxer and a gentleman an he will never be forgotten, I will be just like him one day.
Fight night was the game that introduced me to this underrated great I'm so glad I searched em up because he soon became my favorite Heavyweight of all time and this video became one of my favorites of him
one of the greatest fighters of all time! A crime he is not ranked a top 10HW of all time, since he is the 1st one who become 2x undisputed and being way smaller than his opponents!
Thanks for a wonderful video about Floyd. The man with the great handspeed. Very hard to rank him fairly. He had so many qualities but got knockdown so often. But he still get up. One of the most likeable men i boxing history.
Patterson fought in the Olympics as a middleweight (165lbs) and went on to win a heavyweight title. In my opinion, he gets a lot of unfair criticism for his chin, considering he would be fighting at super middleweight - light heavyweight in this era.
Boxing Reels Exactly. I honestly believe he is so UNDERRATED. He had the speed, the power and the technicality. All that he lacked was size and a decent chin.
He might have made 190 but naturally he was 160-175, same as how Roy Jones Jr at 200 pounds was not a heavyweight regardless of if he could put the pounds on or not.
This music was perfect to the video it really captured Floyds spirit. When i was a kid our female schoolteacher told ous children that she sat on Floyds lap and had a picture with him when he came to Sweden. When she asked for a gift he gave her his pack of Lucky Strike that she still has saved to this day:) Floyd was well liked in Sweden picus of his gentleman maner and big heart. His brother actually lives in the south of Sweden right now. Bless his spirit!
Great video. Good song as well for floyd. The peek a boo is my favorite style and floyd was one of the greats. He was small for a heavyweight but that didn't stop him.
RIP To Floyd Patterson He Had Very Fast Hands And He Had Good Punch Power Floyd Patterson Was A Very Brave Heavyweight And Floyd Patterson Was A Strong Boxing Champion Of The World
No, he wasn't. Cus was his maneger, but not his trainer. Floyd told me this himself. Do you believe Angelo could train Ali ? Same thing. The original Peekaboo was the resalt of the hard work between Floyd and his original trainer Frank Lavelle. Not Cus Damato.
not only that...Floyd had to fire Cus for reasons. Liston fought only 4 world title fights and 3 of them lasted only one round. And the other one he quit. Think about it...
This is a great video. Floyd could really blaze away with both hands. It makes me wonder how Sonny Liston could have beaten him the way he did. I think he must have been psyched out. Floyd was a true gentleman and a credit to boxing.
@Ron P He was outweighed by Ali too. A testament to his competitive nature. He refused to settle for anything less then the big names the heavyweight division offered. If he had fought his own weight, he would've been legendary (he still is imo). Instead, he is called a glass-jaw and not given enough credit for his skill.
He has always been under-rated, especially as a puncher. In his prime he could box with the best of them and could punch their lights out with either hand.
Floyd won a gold medal as a middleweight. He could have easily fought at light heavy, and had he done so would have undoubtedly dominated that division for years. For a blown up middlweight/light heavy to make as much noise as he did at heavyweight, speaks volumes at how good he really was. P4P one of the most skilled boxers to ever live. It's a shame alot of people only remember him from the Ali and Liston losses. Many fighters have bad losses, Joe Frazier got demolished by George Foreman, Liston got beaten easily by Ali, Tyson got beaten by Buster Douglas and Holyfield. Patterson took some and dished it out as well. Styles make fights. And size has alot to do with outcomes, and Floyd was almost always the smaller guy. Patterson gave legendary fighters such as Chuvalo, Archie Moore, Bonavena (who almost beat Ali) Quarry, Ellis, Joey Maxim, and ingemar johannson fits, and was smaller than nearly all of them. I think he could have beaten any sub 200lb fighter, or at least given them a run for their money. Including Charles, Marciano, Dempsey or Louis.
Dempsey, Louis and Marciano would destroy monsters bigger than them all the time. Patterson's real problem was his chin. If you're going to be small, you need to have a good chin to get on the inside. I think you're right, that Patterson wouldve done better at light heavy. He already proved that he could've beaten Archie Moore
Tyson was ona downfall spiral during his loss to douglas and douglas was down for 16 secconds anyways long count fucked up the fight and tyson was way past his prime during his loss to holyfeild
@El Alfredo Not so sure, Floyd and Rocky had one common opponent and that was Archie Moore, and they only fought Archie one year apart. Floyd destroyed Archie while Marciano struggled a bit and was dropped. Floyd always did well against smaller fighters. The only two times Floyd was dominated was by Liston and Ali, both liston and Ali beat Rocky imo.
Floyd Patterson was like the Mike Tyson of his era. He fought with a similar peek-a-boo style as what Tyson later used. And he was a hard hitter. But like Tyson, Patterson's winning run eventually came to an end with losses to Liston and Ali.
@@therumbleinthejunglee You're 100% right about the size part, but the age part is TOTALLY IRRELEVANT because Floyd was still pretty fast (at age 30 in the first fight and at age 37 in the second fight) in his two fights with Muhammad no matter how old he was. So you GO BACK and view both fights in general considering the fact at the time of the seventh round stoppage in the second fight, one judge had the fight even at three rounds a piece while one judge had Ali ahead four rounds to two and the referee (who was the third judge in the fight) had Ali ahead in a "shutout" 6-0.
One of the most likable and intelligent boxers of all-time. He was the youngest ever to win the HW crown in 1956 and was the very 1st to ever regain the HW title in 1960. He was really more of a light-heavy in terms of his size. At one point he had the most one punch KOs (6) in HW history. If he had competed in the LHW division he might have become the greatest ever at that weight class. Considering his special accomplishments Patterson is worthy of a top 20 all-time HW ranking.
Patterson never fought at Cruiserweight. There never was a cruiserweight division in Patterson's time. He spent most of his career at heavyweight even though he started off at light heavyweight.
Floyd Patterson was never a real heavyweight, just like Holyfield. They were both natural cruiserweights wearing heavyweight trunks. The cruiserweight division sadly just didn’t exist at that time, so Patterson had to choose between light heavy or full blown heavyweight. Bless his soul that he had the courage to be a heavyweight. He was too small, and too brave.
I'd so like to see him against a modern day boxer like Anthony Joshua. I know the height and weight difference is huge but look at those snapping body punches and the distance he manages to close before he punches. I genuinely think He'd be a champion even today, half a century later
Floyd is underrated. He was one of the first to bring a modern style to boxing. Marciano was the last of the old generation of boxers, Floyd was the beginning of an updated style which is currently used today. Many people credit Ali with the big change, but Floyd was there first with Cus D'Amoto's peekaboo style.
Wow. Never knew he was such a brutal, destructive puncher. The left hook that wipes the face of the last guy and lifts him of his feet . Boom ! And he met JFK too. Amazing ! God bless you Floyd.
it actually annoys me how underrated he is he deserves to be remembered so much more

My favorite boxer of all times. I also have him a one of the greatest boxers of all times.
Patterson fought in the Olympics as a middleweight (165lbs) and went on to win a heavyweight title. In my opinion, he gets a lot of unfair criticism for his chin, considering he would be fighting at super middleweight - light heavyweight in this era.
He was a legit heavyweight at a 195 pounds when he was champion
Boxing Reels Exactly. I honestly believe he is so UNDERRATED. He had the speed, the power and the technicality. All that he lacked was size and a decent chin.
Alex Lynch Definantley, he was really explosive and he could dance like ballet star
Boxing Reels He also threw very good combinations and had a technical aspect to him.
He might have made 190 but naturally he was 160-175, same as how Roy Jones Jr at 200 pounds was not a heavyweight regardless of if he could put the pounds on or not.
Those flurries while pressing forward are pure art man.
Thank you for Hajime no Ippo (46) - 47! Episode. Really legendary punch!
One of the, if not the most, underrated champions of all time
i don't care about the other floyd...patterson is very very underrated ....
The fastest heavyweight hands of all time
That was partly because he was barely heavyweight
Great video. Good song as well for floyd. The peek a boo is my favorite style and floyd was one of the greats. He was small for a heavyweight but that didn't stop him.
Timeless & Incredible skill (1:01). I would have loved to see his fights live/in-person. Sad about where heavy weight boxing is today...
IMHO, the greatest Floyd ever lace the boxing gloves. Period.
2:26 that might be one of the most vicious combinations I have seen.
I would love to see some more footage of this guy.
beatifull music, nice video
Dude i'm subed! You have the best boxing vids on You tube! Props.
You were and still are the best reznick
WOOT! WELCOME BACK MATE!
RIP To Floyd Patterson He Had Very Fast Hands And He Had Good Punch Power Floyd Patterson Was A Very Brave Heavyweight And Floyd Patterson Was A Strong Boxing Champion Of The World
Great video!
Floyd Patterson was a Boxing Great!
trained by cus, u can just tell
Cassius X yup he was
No, he wasn't. Cus was his maneger, but not his trainer. Floyd told me this himself. Do you believe Angelo could train Ali ? Same thing. The original Peekaboo was the resalt of the hard work between Floyd and his original trainer Frank Lavelle. Not Cus Damato.
Himawalin Cat oh all this time I thought cus trained Floyd thanks for telling me
not only that...Floyd had to fire Cus for reasons. Liston fought only 4 world title fights and 3 of them lasted only one round. And the other one he quit. Think about it...
Himawalin Cat what do you mean?
Greatest boxer of all time
Floyd Patterson was very underrated really fast as well!
Sonny Liston was a bigger than Patterson
Sonny also had the stylistic advantage just like foreman had it against frazier.
The man was braver than most, meek and quiet but still leapt into combat as the brazen gazelle.
My favorite, Him and Smoking Joe
Both lost to the great one
You must love killer left- hooks
@@hueyfreeman1983 You forgot what Frazier did to the "great one" ?
@@vena180 lost twice?
@@hueyfreeman1983 Nah shut him up loool
The gentleman of boxing 🥊
Humble and amazing!
Pound for pound he’s easily in the top 3 heavyweights just because of his raw skill
Those hands. 🎉
Floyd Patterson was like the Mike Tyson of his era. He fought with a similar peek-a-boo style as what Tyson later used. And he was a hard hitter. But like Tyson, Patterson's winning run eventually came to an end with losses to Liston and Ali.
Beautiful Knockouts. A Knockout Artist.
Such a humble and handsome man
Still my personal #1 and always will be!
maan i love you for those videos
Floyd Patterson = Original Mike Tyson
BEAST
Devastating puncher
His victory over Ingemar Johansson is so satisfying !
Next to the magnificent Muhammad Ali of course, Floyd Patterson was indeed the fastest heavyweight champion of all-time.
Na Floyd Patterson was the fastest next to no one
@@therumbleinthejunglee But you have to remember Ali defeated Patterson twice with his speed and endurance.
@@Eazyduzit1995 no shit and it was more due to size and age then speed go watch the fight again Patterson was old by then
@@therumbleinthejunglee You're 100% right about the size part, but the age part is TOTALLY IRRELEVANT because Floyd was still pretty fast (at age 30 in the first fight and at age 37 in the second fight) in his two fights with Muhammad no matter how old he was.
@@Eazyduzit1995 boy shut the fuck up
My god he is the most satisfying boxer to watch throw punches to another mans face.
the way how he ko his opponents is the best thing i saw and look at his smile first seconds of the video warrior sorry for english
that peek a boo with the short hooks is OP
great vid bro
The gazelle punch lethal too
probably the best lead hook iv'e ever seen as its just vicious
I am not fortunate enough to have met my favorite boxer. Floyd patterson inspired me to get into the ring.
Gentleman of boxing 👌
Unfortunately Floyd was just too small for the bigger heavyweights but he is a true p4p great for sure. Great video!
All these years later and I find out this is a Moby song...
All respect intended but he is the greatest cruiserweight of all time, faster than Holyfield and a better boxer than Marciano(who I rate highly)
Made in Coatbridge many were better boxers than Marciano cuz he wasnt really a boxer, he was a warrior and the best we've seen yet
Elvis Taipi very true. He was on you from the first bell to the last. Rez nick has a fantastic highlight reel for Rocky.
Made in Coatbridge I know good man, that video inspired me to do something impossible once..the best thing on youtube imo
Patterson the underrated champ but he was a skilled like a demon on a warpath. the Humble Champ of boxing
Wow, such a great fighter. I think Floyd Patterson was "peak a boo" beta or the developer preview version. You know where i'm going with that right?🙂.
That gazelle punch best knockout ive ever seen
Floyd Patterson's Gazelle Punch is quite arguably the deadliest boxing technique ever used!
one of my favorite boxer he and clevland and terrell and joe and ali and ray roppnison
Does anybody know the fight at 2:20, it’s awesome how he rolls on the ropes after the ko
You gotta love that left hook..
Floyd was one of the greats
The most graceful boxer in history.
See I never have seen floyd in his prime, only in the second half of his career where a title wouldn't have happened..He was a freaking beast!
1:55 el Golpe Gacela
Esta mejor este 2:03
What type of athleticims did this man possess. Oh wow
I must check out him training
awesome video... music was wonderous too enjoyed it
Wonderful video for a tiny badger of a heavyweight.
that right hand at 0:23 is somthing to behold, absolutly impeccable timing
53 seconds what a punch , guy was out in the air
And still... Youngest UNDISPUTED Heavyweight Champion of the World
Wow. Never knew he was such a brutal, destructive puncher. The left hook that wipes the face of the last guy and lifts him of his feet . Boom ! And he met JFK too. Amazing ! God bless you Floyd.
Music of the video anyone ?
Natural middleweight hardly 6 feet tall with shoes on. A damn good fighter and a damn good man.
