Tony Pepers is THE man!
Pepers Dirty Tree is amazing. It's the only boost I use
Hands down my fav has been the Horizon Devices Precision Drive. Really love the attack button to tighten up chugs.
Damn, I remember how that ST9 Pro+ was your NEW pedal and not a classic. Been watching this channel for a while now it seems :D
Great list. Two of my other favorites to add: MXR Zakk Wylde Overdrive and the BBE Green Screamer. First is a great modified SD1 and the second is my favorite TS 808 style pedal so far
Seeing that SD-1 definitely makes me happy, Boss makes some absolutely fantastic pedals (I own a bunch including an OD-1X and DS-1) and they're one of my favourite pedal companies, plus they just sound so goddamn good
I have a really weird Boss Power Driver, PW-2. It covers everything from a big muff fuzz to a pushed clean boost. Fantastic for the money.
Ds-1 is a goddam classic
You need to try the DS1X. It’s my new favorite distortion.
@@ErrorlVlacro I've seen them at my local guitar store but haven't tried one yet, I love my DS-1 but next time I go down I'll check that out
Never heard of the mxr modified od. That was my favorite tonally in this video. Great info!
I would love to this with other amps like the Rockerverb. Great video!
Excellent idea!
Agreed! Would love this for boosting a 5150
Absolutely love Boss SD-1 into MW Dual Recto
I have a few of those, but I’ve been using the Fulltone Secret Freq for about 4 years now and can’t seem to top it. Excellent video!Thank you for sharing this with us!
Oh my God, the dirty tree is it man!!!!
I run an EVH 5150 III 50 watt head with a Seymour Duncan 805 OD in front of it and it sounds incredible. Gives you that really aggressive "bark" you want from a high-gain modern tone. I should note I'm playing an EC-1000 Eclipse with Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge.
I have an 80's OD-1. It's such an amazing pedal in front of a JCM800 style amp for rock and metal tones.
I have a ton of boosts and overdrives and I swap them out whenever I'm getting bored with whatever is on the board.
My favorite lately is a King Of Tone clone a local builder made me a few years ago.
Pepers Dirty Tree for the WIN!!!!
Torres! I'm thinking about picking up a Badlander, never owned a Mesa.
I used to always use a tube screamer, but switched to a 4 band parametric EQ a few years back and highly recommend using an eq instead of an overdrive for high gain amps for their versatility.
use both
I’m assuming you refer to the eq in the effects loop. I find that’s where it’s at.
@@jefferyleo76 I was referring to an eq in front of the amp, but I do use a parametric eq into the amp and in the effects loop.
@@AmoresAJ gotcha. I’m with ya on both counts. Overdrives color the sound. In a bad way to my ear.
Triple rec with the an Fulltone OCD in front is where it’s at for me. Something about the mosfet in the OCD paired with the rectifier preamp blends so well.
Ayy Peppers! New Zealand love
Man Ryan…. that Dirty Tree 🌲 rules 🤯
I need to try one with the Tremoverb 🤘🏽
Good Luck getting one after this vid lol
@@patjustice1203 I can't ship anything anywhere at the moment due to New Zealand being in a lockdown. I am however taking orders and have opened up more slots on my store. 😁
I use a Dirty Tree in front of my Marshall DSL 100 and it sounds amazing. I absolutely love that pedal.
Awesome choices!! The SD-1 is probably still my favorite boost, and the VFE Ice Scream is probably the most you can wring out of a TS-style circuit with its HPF and LPF. It's like combining the VFE Standout/Focus or Fortin Tempest with a really good TS-style overdrive pedal. Pleased to see that MXR in there as well, that's an awesome pedal for tone shaping.
Still have my sd1 from 35 years ago.Used it with my jcm800.Best tone I ever had.Now I use fulltone ocd .
That dirty tree is nasty in all the right ways. Nice content Fluff!
Mesa Boogie Grid slammer is great I use this and is well made. That last pedal sounds awesome
I have been using a Way Huge Red Lllama in front of my triple rec, and I have to say, I am really loving it.
Awesome demos. I have both the Boss Super OverDrive and Ibanez Tube Screamer, and I prefer the TS for my Dual Recto w/ 4x12, but I have a later rev and I could TOTALLY see the Boss super OD perhaps being a better option with a different rev or cab.
Excellent
If anyone asks "why boost", have them watch a Rory Gallagher clip. Technically that's a treble booster, but all the things you described basically describe that, except instead of low cut it's high boost, for the most part.
DIRTY TREE ALL DAY
Saw the Archon in the back. Since you're a Mark Tremonti fan. I'd love to see a video of you blending the Archon with one of your rectifiers.
Rather it's just for fun or to do one of the tone receation videos that you haven't done in awhile.
Similar to the Dirty Tree, I have the Protone Pedals Preamp (same circuit as the TC). Definitely my favorite boost circuit of all time! It just sounds good with every amp and it's even great at getting a crunch or edge-of-breakup sound when engaged in front of a clean amp (especially something like a VOX styled amp).
I use a BOSS GE-7.. Love it
Up front or in the loop ?
Like how the Dirty Tree and the Badass sounded here, the badass is like a modified SD-1 I believe. I never liked the symmetrical smooth clipping of TS pedals and always preferred SD-1 based pedals because they seemed to be a little more hairy and wild.
Thanks for the informative episode!
Any favorite tube-based preamps or boosters that you would put in front of the rectifier?
Nice!
My favorite I use with the Rectifier is the TS9 (Ibanez).
Gain something from this video lol. Very dad, but kinda sneaky, and good lol. Great video Fluff.
Perfect timing on this one, Fluff. Have been looking for something different than my TS9 Mini.
Just got my first real tube amp and now after all this time and now I’m getting into the world of pedals gheesh
But what if I like the low end more than anything else?
Dirty tree is on my list. I use the Fortin grind with my rev f triple. Sounds awesome, and it switches channels. Only con was a Lil pricy.
Cool comparo, always loved me some fat recto grit. Some pedals with lots of level boost here push the amps to a bit too overdriven / mushy for my tastes. Anyhoo, keep up the good work!
Powerfull list Fluff!... nice to see all your Rectos... but not a Badlander?
Whoa hotdamn that MXR is absolutely amazing, definitely grabbing one of those ASAP!
That pedal is ridiculously good. The 100hz knob lets you tighten anything without sounding quite as metallic as the fortin-ish stuff. My favorite boost I've ever owned
Try the Archer gold red. By j rockett
I’ve had that mxr in front of my vht pittbull hundred for a few years now.
Kyle Bulls fav
This is exactly what I needed. Looking for a boost as I type...
I haven't had my coffee yet and was really looking forward to hearing about that True Fire pedal.
Nice boots!
I have a dirty tree in front of my DR road king. It really brings out the roar! Excellent boost!! Still wish I could get more low-end like I had from my Engl E670 but the clarity and tightness in tone makes up for it. Still hard to beat the DR roar.
If I’m using passive pickups I use an vintage Arion SOD-1 if I’m using Fishmans I use the Kuge Screamer that I bought from you Fluff🤘🏻
My favorite is the ZW Overdrive! \m/
Dirty Tree is an amazing pedal!
I recently picked up the earthquaker devices modded od808 and man that thing blew me away!
Actually really enjoyed this video, where would you maybe find the Ibanez nu-tube screamer in this mix?
Try out the direwolf drive, it cleans up the rec enough for 8 strings, but keeps it as growly as it started
I use my dirty tree with every amp. Just kills.
Awesome video Fluff! Im new to the overdrive world on my DR! Currently own the MXR Custom Bad*ss OD ⚡️. Do you run your OD in front on the amp? Or on the FX Loop? TIA 🤘🏽
I don't have a Rectifier, but from the clips I've heard both here and on other channels, I think the Fortin stuff wins. Or whatever gets you similar, that Dirty Tree sounded really good.
Of the OD's I've used, my favorite generally speaking is the MWK Crissaegrim. It's real sick.
Fortin vs. Recto makes about as much sense as hammer vs. saw. Very different tools.
I use the Horizon Devices Precision drive. Plugged it in, turned it on and have never turned it off since. Sold off my TS9, and my Maxon OD808.
Just waiting for our dearest fluff to make a video on ML soundlabs amped dual
Hey fluff any plans to go a full demo of the dirty tree?
The ice cream similar to green rhyno by way huge....it has that boost and cut knob.
Still the best for me is the boss sd1...that yellow always coming back to my pedal board
I use the Marshall Blues Breaker 2 pedal. It has an over and a boost setting. I use the boost setting.
Do another video like this but with the Peavey 5150/6505!!
About to get me a boss sd1 . Haven't tried it yet. I got the ts9 , precision drive , and dirty tree. I use the ts9 the most lately.
I love the shelf holding all your amps. Where did you get it? I need one
He doesn't really respond to people in the comments much unfortunately.
i wanna mix that intro! XD
That Dirty Tree sounded great!
Whoa. Listen to all the noise within it. That sounds like an issue.
@@toneconsultant Sounded good to me, add in a noise suppressor pedal and call it a day
Turn the gain down a little, dial back the presence a bit or both. Hard to dial it in perfect with an a/b comparison video.
Two questions: 1) Why do you have so many? I know they sound slightly different, but eq settings can help. 2) If you had to choose only one, which one and why? 🤔
I use a suhr shiba for boosting/tightning up high gain amps
what about a klon clone type boost ?
Empress para eq is amazing.
👉 The MXR 10 BAND EQ is the same!! 👍
Late to the party, but I just bought the Boss pedal for $40. Thanks Ryan, also Ryan 😆
It’s Rectifiers, Beards & Gear now! 😂
Boost!
All are killer sounding! But the subtle differences are totally lost in a mix. As long as you like what you're hearing from your speakers, its all good.
Hey Fluff you need to try the Deadweald Duality DX. Also did you get one of the Tamura modded TS808?
Nice video, to my ear they all prettymuch sound the same. Am I wrong ryan ?
I liked the Ice Scream best here. Miss that brand.
Highwind Direwolf 👍
Hello, wonderful videos, a question regarding Mesa Roadster, what can I do with the Slave out from the rear panel? thank you in advance.
God I wish I could find a Dirty Tree every Reverb listing i find is already sold, super happy with my SD-1 in front of my single rec though.
Why not go straight to the source? Me. There is a bit of wait time but it is a guarantee that you'll get the pedal rather than playing Reverb Roulette. Cheers
@@TonyPepers You know what dude, for some reason I thought you weren't making any more. Of course I'd rather buy it from the source. Heading over to your website now.
@@joeyzee I had sold out of them for a bit. But now I'm working overtime making them. Made up 55 last week and I have 150 boards made up ready to drop into enclosures next week. Had a huge surge in orders in the past month.
@@TonyPepers The power of Fluff, ha! Well my orders in there next to the other. Can't wait.
@@joeyzee thank you sir!
I'd love to see a version of this video that was more focused on the Mesa Mark series overdrive, perhaps taking it from a regular eighties (Mark 2C+ ?) rock sound (not death metal), and giving it a more rich Soldano SLO or Friedman BE flavor, yet while retaining much of that Mesa Mark 2C+ OD smoothness. Any suggestions?
On the next episode of Ridiculous reverb listings, VFE Ice scream pedals for $5000?!?
Will never change my SD-1, it respects the sound of the rectifier but correcting that anoying low end.....it will always be my way to go when I use my tripple rect. Buuut, I do this mostly to jam on my living room because in reality 99% of the time I'm plugged into my Axe fx3
Macon OD9 Pro + is pretty great
Hey Fluff, I've used a Rat in a front of a rectified and man sound killer. I know is not a overdrive but may you like it, try it out and tell us. Cheers!
Probably sounds better than an overdrive
Do you find the Mesa model in the Helix to be the best in the Helix? I've tried other amp models in there but I always hit the Rectifier and I'm like, yup that's the stuff.
Try MXR Sugar drive...
I bought a used sd1 for 25 bucks. Later on I tried selling it at guitar center and the clerks said something was wrong with the pedals signal. I kept the pedal and now it’s go to clean boost, I even use it with mxr 10 band eq with the settings like Kerry king. My tone overall is mid dominant with some bottom end but it’s super tight tight bottom end and the top end is there but not really
The ibanez tube screamer came out a good deal before the SD1
Actually the SD1 is based on the same chip circuitry design as Boss’s predecessor OD1, which came out in 1977. The 808/Screamer (Maxon/ Ibanez) was a take on these Boss pedals but came out in 1979. So the Boss overdrive was a good deal before the 808.
ODs remove extremely too much bottom end and completely alters the tone of your amp. Instead...I use a TC Spark boost or an EQ in front of the amp (raising the level). However, there is one OD pedal that does not kill your bottom end and alter the tone that much, the OCD in LP mode.
🤘😈🤘
SOUNDS LIKE LIKE TRUE FIRE:: bAM tANKS
I think I'm weird, but I like to boost the front of my amp with my compressor
VFE Standout 👍
I love the Standout. Wish I didnt sell mine.
@@clintn6677 Absolutely. Kinda hard to find now and if you do they’re way overpriced. But I feel it’s the perfect boost pedal👍
That rectifier was sounding mean I like it
Ok answer me this . I'd say almost everyone into gear and high end amps have a boost in their signal . Why would Mesa not make a built in screamer/boost into their modern amps?
The JP-2C does have this. A lot of modern guitarists are doing exactly this in their signature amps, but it’s to their tastes and not entirely one size fits all. On the more mainstream amps, it’s an extra cost to the consumer when, as you mentioned, most people already have a front end boost of choice.
Doesn't the Badlander have it built in now? Think so
Because it’s easier to pick your own boost sound
Your sound is funny
Cool video with some great tones... but FWIW... most of these pedals are overdrive pedals. That's not really the same as a boost pedal. For boosts, I like the Echoplex Preamp and the SoloDallas Storm.
Get a JHS Bonzai and have a plethora of choices in one pedal. Agree with you though, the ST9 Pro+ is the king of the green ODs.
What about mesa boogie grid slammer?
Are these drive pedals run through the effects loop… or… preamp?
Almost certainly through the preamp
