Is Canon Powershot G15 still WORTH IT in 2022? (FUN 9 years old compact camera)

  • Today I want to share my thoughts of using the Canon Powershot G15 in 2022 from a perspective of Micro Four Thirds user. Canon G15 is an old camera, and I bought this camera way back before I was starting to use Micro 4/3, but I decided to give the G15 another try and turns out it is a really fun and enjoyable camera to use. If you have an old camera, don't be so quick to dismiss it, try it again and see if you can find some joy in doing photography or video with that old camera. Shout out to ‪@snappiness‬ for inspiring me to pick up an old camera and start having fun with it!

    Good video, thanks for making it. I have one of these inbound at the moment, having the S95 and S120 and quite happy with them. The Powershot G series has been on my radar for a long time, and I came very close to getting the G10 but was derailed by the Pentax K7, so finally getting one, has me somewhat happy. It also enters a small collection of older high-end compacts, which are great fun to horse around with, when I am not carrying a M43. 🙂

    I have Canon Powershot S95, bought it in 2012, and still use it like a pro, shoot in raw, lowlight 😁. It was high end compact camera at the time. The image quality is so good for a small camera, and it's very pocketable.
    I have other compact cameras - Canon G1X & Ricoh GR3 but they're too big to put in the pocket(due to APSC sensor size). For me, the purpose of compact camera is must be pocketable. If they're too big to put in the pocket, I'd rather bring my mirrorless camera.

      The S95 was considered a legend back then, I almost fot the S95 instead of the G15. But I prefer easier manual controls so I ended up with the G15. Thank you for sharing!

    Just bought Canon G15 few weeks ago. Used in great condition, cheap. Very happy with it, Photos quality is good, only those blown higlights...I use it mainly on bike trips, when I need small camera. I also have Sony A5100 and few lenses, but it's too big to be pocketable camera.

    • @sznib
      @sznib Год назад

      @@nexusmediaworld Well, it can produce very nice photos. Especially colors are great. Macro photos, nature are what this camera like. Cons are: tendency to overexpose and blow highlights, not good auto white balance (a lot of photos were to reddish and I must correct it in Lightroom) and lack of details due to small sensor. Is it worth of interst depends how much you will have to pay. it's nice camera to buch chep, but if you can afford to spend some more i would recommend G7X.

      I just bought a G15 as well, with the idea of taking it out for my MTB trail riding. I’ll see how that goes but I do worry about the lack of weather sealing and shock resistance. That might lead me to save it for other (safer) activities and look into an OM TG-7 (or future TG-8) for bike use.

Now I use it a lot more than before for casual photography. Cheers 😁

    Gary, we have the same outlook as far as camera is concerned. At present I have a Fuji XT4, but I enjoy using my Panasonic GF10 with the 12-32mm kit lens much better. Before the GF10, I used a camera which has similar specs with your Canon G15. The Pentax MX-1. Similar sensor (1/1.7). Similar focal length and aperture. Both have a fixed lens. I enjoyed the MX-1 very much. It so happen that it broke, that's why I bought the GF10. I had a project in Jakarta way back in 2014. My camera then was the Olympus OMD EM5, with the Pana 7-14mm lens. I enjoyed this combination much more than an APS-C setup (it's personal, I'm not trying to bury other systems). Point is, technology is a good thing. Bigger sensor, high dynamic range, better AF, higher frame rates, but if it's too bulky and you can't bring it out, what's the point of having a modern camera?

    And about comparing with modern phone, I don't know whether the phone you're using, has raw mode or not. But modern phone is more like using computing/AI photography, while the Canon camera is using traditional lens. I love shooting in raw, because editing process in photography, is like an art to me 😁 same like the art of shooting photos itself.

    Micro 4/3 is my daily workhorse, but I recently picked up an old Canon G1X mk1. Man, oh man. This thing is fun and has a beautful output. And I like the Canon colors so much, more so than my Olympus colors. I also really like the optical viewfinder better than the electronic one.....easier on my eyes and more natural. Also, I'm using the digital zoom a lot. It does fine with the larger sensor and gives me a heck of a lot of range.....16x with a single built in lens ain't bad at all.

    I was just looking at my G15 this morning and thought "I should use this more often". I like that it's small and pocketable, but still has a better lens than my smartphone. It's a good compact alternative to my full-frame DSLRs. The only thing I don't like is how laggy the shutter is. It's fine for anything that doesn't move, but it's virtually useless for kids, dogs, or sports.
    As for your question about the oldest camera I still use, I've been using my Nikon SP (1957) pretty much exclusively this past week.

Why not using the 3:2 as this size is possible to set in the G16? In my opinion the images in 3:2 have a more professional look… what do you think about this?

      Hello, I do use Micro 4/3 system primarily and I've been very accustomed to 4:3 aspect ratio, because of the "almost square" look that isn't actually totally square and whenever I can I will always set any camera that I have to 4:3. Hope this helps.

    Awesome video! which would you buy? g12 vs Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ70 vs powershot SX740HS? starting price is around 100usd vs 50usd vs 50usd (same order) g12 is ccd the others are cmos. Are ccd sensors much better/valuable?!?!?!

    • @Gary_W
      @Gary_W  Год назад +1

      I would much prefer something with good handling but still relatively small sized. The G12 isn't bad, and maybe I will choose it because the controls are really good, it's a fun camera(I used it before) and there's that flipping screen which is really handy for me. CCD isn't better in my opinion, it's just a different look and maybe you can experiment in post processing to get that same look.

      @@Gary_W thanks for your answer :) in the end i went for the g12. All cameras ended up around 100usd. I guess I picked it because of the build quality seemed the tankiest. Iam really gonna try carry it with me everywhere and not be so careful with it 😜

    • @Gary_W

      Use full manual, shutter speed below 1/1000 for the G15, ISO, aperture and flash power are adjusted for the overall exposure. Hope this helps!

    I love my G15. My biggest complaint is the auto-lens cover. Dust or grit gets in it, and it has left vertical scratches on my lens which is really disappointing as they often show up as blurs in my photos :( Nevertheless, the photos that I take have a very unique feel, and despite it being a digital camera, I feel it is still quite analog as compared to some rigs today.

    • @Gary_W
      @Gary_W  8 месяцев назад +1

      Sorry to hear that, it is always annoying to have scratches on the lens. The G15 is now my JPEG camera, very fun to use for casual day to day activities.

    I've seen a few videos about the powershot g9 creating a beautiful filmic look, would you say the g15 is the same or is the g9 better for that?

    • @Gary_W
      @Gary_W  Год назад +1

      I haven't compared the G15 to a G9 but to be honest you can tweak some settings on the picture profile and make your image looks more filmic with the G15.

      @johnyBIEBERpanguito I honestly just use one of the picture profiles, I will get back to you which one, and shoot JPEG, and got the "filmic look"

    Do you recommend this camera? Is the image quality sufficient for today?

    • @Gary_W
      @Gary_W  Год назад

      For everyday photography, it is more than enough. I frequently use it for just a simple dinner with my wife or friends. But for serious photography stuff and somewhat technical stuff like landscape, product photographs, and anything that demands high dynamic range, it might not be sufficient.

      Hello, thank you for the kind comment! It does not have any information inside the viewfinder. But there is a small green LED right beside the viewfinder, it will turn on when the camera locks focus. You can see it without taking your eyes off the viewfinder. Hope this helps!
