I love how when Kirito realizes who Leafa is, his first thought is that she's doing this to make him miserable. It's a mirror of how when Suguha realized that Kazuto is in her game, she thought he's there to mess with her.
Especially since he knows he took her to see Asuna *after* having met Leafa and still assumed she bought the Amusphere *after that* to fuck with him. High emotions and logic aren’t the best of friends.
Wait a minute... Kirito mentions that he has asthma. Maybe that's why his mom pulled him out and offered him an alternative instead, and knowing how little Kirito talks about his problems maybe he didn't tell Suguha that that was the reason why he didn't fought against the decision. It was for his health, not for him just getting bored. So, Suguha playing how fun Kendo was without him must have felt like she was taunting him. Like 'Haha, I have so much fun in the sport you like so much and that you can't do because you have fragile lungs!' Jesus Christ if this is the case I will cry.
Man, what a phenomenal read of the situation. We've got just enough details sprinkled in for it to work, and it does. Nice job putting everything together!
Honestly though, after seeing what Shoji does to his colleagues, I think he may deserve it at least little (like basic fear, if not the outright trauma he's experiencing here)
I continue to love how they’ve allowed Yui to not only be a psycho but also still a psychologist AI who helps resolve the interpersonal conflict between Kazuto and Suguha.

The classic love story; Boy meets girl, boy accuses girl of war crimes, boy gets really high, girl yells at boy, boy and girl solve murder, boy and girl watch as murderer is beaten to death, boy stabs ghost. That last one is real crucial to the progression. If boy doesn't stab ghost, there's no real romance.
Something I just realized. Yui gets qualities from both of her parents. She has Kirito's heart and neuroticism. She also has Asuna's caring nature, and psychopathic tendencies!

Im waiting for the entire alfheim arc to be completed before watching any of it because that storyline was so uncomfortable to watch front to end and I can't get disappointed like that again. But reading this all my fears are put to rest and now I can't wait until the arc is finished so I can marathon it all.
The Suguha outburst is the longest I've ever seen SAOA go without a joke and I am so glad it happened. The emotion they put into it made a scene 10× better than the original. That part is truly a masterpiece.
This compared to the Canon sceene is 1000 times better. It felt like they were fighting over something truly profound instead of just yelling about how Suguha wanted to F her brother

I am wholeheartedly convised that they binged all of SAO on mute and just brainstormed what they could fill the scenes with and i love it (seriously though, the writing is such perfection and the voice acting is so perfect)
They actually seem to be referencing the original (HIGHLY SUPERIOR TO THE OFFICIAL ANIME) light novels with this episode! Much to my incredible joy, they appear to be adding back in Kirito's extensively fucked up and traumatizing backstory from the novels that the anime cut entirely. But yeah, the writing team behind this abridged series is awesome in general.
It sells their work short. They took everything stupid about original and fixed it, like original Sword Art Online being terrible game become a plotline here.
Just realized that Kazuto's asthma line in the World Tree at 20:38 could explain why his mom wanted him to stop learning Kendo. It's a perfectly reasonable explanation for why his mom wouldn't want him to pursue such a physical sport. And Kazuto probably hid it from Sugu so he wouldn't seem weak. Which only made it worse when she tried to get him to go back to Kendo by showing off how fun it was. For Kazuto it just felt like she was rubbing in his face all the things she could do, but he couldn't because of his asthma. It also plays into why he loves games so much. They're a competitive field where he isn't limited by his condition. Amazing writing SWE. It fits Kazuto's character perfectly, and also hints at the true reason behind the relationship breakdown. A miscommunication because Kazuto didn't tell her about his asthma. EDIT: It might even have originally been that Kazuto didn't want Sugu to feel bad that she could do Kendo, but he couldn't. Just, sad to imagine, yet entirely in character for all parties.
It's these kinda things that make each episode worth the wait. They may take half a year per episode, but that's only because they are taking every step they need to take to write actual gold.
When you about to cry bc 1.SWE turned an incest plot into a wholesome and valid troubled sibling relationship plot 2. They left off on this heavy cliffhanger that you're probably gonna have to endure for another year 3. In the end you know it's probably best for them to take their time for this masterpiece 🥲
I stared waiting SAO Abridged when it first came out when I was in high-school I just hate waiting a whole year to see the next episode but the jokes in here I think will make step-dad laugh I just want more Droid sound affect in those fight scenes

For me the most gut wrenching line was when Sugu said "Was it me?" Because you just know she spent so long blaming herself for her brother abandoning her, telling herself she just wasn't worth it, to the point it turned to rage, and then finally her resentment towards him completely. Absolutely heartbreaking and so much better than the OG sibling strain.

Idk why Reki even bothered making suguha and Kirito cousins in the first place. He could have just written them as siblings or maybe he wanted an excuse to write an incest plot cause apparently he used to read stories with suggestive sexual situations you would see in Berserk
Fan theory. Trisha has been secretly helping out Asuna with her escapes. She can't do much since they might suspect her and she doesn't have the right kind of access as a modeler, but between realizing the purpose of the experiments and her undying hate for Shoji, she has plenty of reasons to wanna help. In return, Asuna helps make Shoji's life hell from her end with every escape attempt. I bet she even managed to slip Asuna some personal details to help with the trauma. Like the fact that Shoji owns a dog.
Asuna might have got this info during the time before the dmin console. At the start of the scene she says she's been having some fun off stream. Might be getting this info plus extra. Gosh, it might have been Trisha too, as a part of the off camera scene
As the modeler, she could have hidden something in the model. Like make some weird purple veins spell "my dog's name is Biscuit" or "my mom's name is Petunia" or whatever it actually is.
I love that where, in season 1, Kayaba's knowledge of movies was meant to show him as a foil to Kirito while in season 2 Suguha's knowledge is meant show that the two of them really were close as kids and probably watched a lot of stuff together.
It's amazing that Asuna is absolutely not the damsel in distress here. She's the terrifying person traumatizing the enemy at every given moment. They're trapped in there with her
I also love how he doesn't even catch the slip!!! Like, he completely misses the whole "you're the worst brother ever" line! It just shows even more how much he disregards Suguha, even if he doesn't realize it's her. Of course he does that to most people, the few exceptions being Asuna, Yue, and MAYBE Tiffany, but still. It drives home the point Suguha tries making that he didn't and still doesn't pay attention to her.
I liked the origional plot line where suguha has a great personality involving: 1) wanting to incest her brother, 2) wanting to incest her brother in a game

Agreed. It certainly says something when multiple fans of something are ok with such long gaps between content because the creators time and time again prove the wait is worth it.
What makes Asuna's torture of Shoji all the better is that the game has an incredibly low pain level. So Asuna's torture of them is so immense that it actually makes them feel immense pain, or she psychologically tortures them so badly that they are still afraid of her. And both options are equally likely knowing her character.
You can ABSOLUTELY tell you guys care about this project. The simple fact that you ended the episode without a joke! You just let it sit on that horrible moment of genuine anguish. Bravo SWE. The writing and voice acting are the stand outs in those last few minutes.
"Use the door, Idiot! ❤" Can we just appreciate how she took the extra (valuable) time to carve a heart in there? Also, I love the continuity that Kirito hasn't learned how to land when flying so he keeps just crashing to the ground like a missile. LOL

I can't take VAs seriously when they do that exaggerated "cutesy" anime voice. Maybe because I grew up with Spanish dubs, not english ones, and they talk like normal people on those ones. So the performance is lost on me.
Well, she *was* a massive asshole to him. I can't exactly blame the traumatized teenager for not wanting to visit the person bullying them from the moment they came back from the Death Game ™. Which doesn't mean it was Suguha's fault, either. Kids are kids. Kazuto was an asshole brother when he was younger - but, again, he was younger. They were, I believe, 13 when SAO started.

The fact that they had such a heart wrenching scene end off with complete silence really made it hit even harder than it already did. The aura of "....fuck..." really hits hard. The VA for suguha really put her all into that final line and it shows. Incredibly well done

Today marks the eleventh month with no SAO abridged episode. My body has entered a state of constant anticipation and disappointment at the same time. Colors seemingly fade into different shades of gray, making the horizon into a beautiful painting of melancholy.
For real. This is using the source material to such a powerful degree - exceeding its cinematography by far, in my opinion. Honestly, not that I saw it, just judging from other anime I saw over time. Because this series is both funny as heck and also fudging powerful.
Suguha feeling real pain in this game vs Kirito saying he barely felt anything because it’s a kids game shows how terrible Aincrad really was for him and all the other people that were stuck there. SWE always putting in the details and characterization expertly

I love that their split is because of Kendo. You can never predict what is the most important thing to someone else, especially an impressionable child who looks up to you. It meant nothing to him and everything to her because it was the thing she and her brother did together.
The whole interaction between Asuna and Shoji is so goood. You re-wrote her from being a damsel in distress to a terrifying sociopath who's always in control of the situation. SAO Abridged Asuna really gives off the "I'm not locked in here with you, you're locked in here with me" vibes
abridged asuna is best asuna. i really didn't like what happed to her character after the first arc. just became one of the harem girls, i don't know if she went back to her oldself in further seasons stopped watching after Yuuki, Which yes was a good bit of the series for her but yeah her character was a huge let down after Aincrad...granted not the worst thing to come out of post Aincrad but it was one of my biggest disappointments.
The fact they they had written Asuna to be so terrifying and defiant that her own captors are afraid of her really fixes how the original turned Asuna into Princess Peach.

Both were very emotional and her voice acting was top notch here too. The real issue is the decision to keep adding waifus to Kirito's harem for some bloody reason. Even the cat and mom fairies started hitting on him. The abridged series shows that you don't need it to be a romance to have a good story, and, in fact, toning down the wish fulfillment wankery actually makes the whole story more compelling. I love that they focused on the Asuna romance and dropped the sister/cousin romance entirely.
i love how they transformed asuna's scenes with the tentacle guys and suguha's plot line. and having kirito crash into the wall not purely out of desperation but to try and glitch through actually makes sense
And then the slime monster was just sooo disgusted at the idea that the other one would molest her! Yes! It was so tasteless and needlessly evil in the original, I think I’ll recommend SAO to my friends just so they can appreciate this XD

I've been waiting for them to do the slug scene ever since they showed that they were gonna do this part of season 1 as well. It really feels like a kind of redemption to see them work their way around the gross objectification and 'damsel in distressification' of Asuna and even portray her as a force to be reckoned with, like she should be
A long time ago, I started watching this series with a dear friend.. she is no longer with us, but every time you post a new episode I get to spend 15 minutes to half an hour laughing and smiling, knowing how much she would have loved it. I know this isn't why you make this, but I cannot thank you enough for what you do, it truly means the world to me
I've a similar story with Hellsing Abridged. Lost a wonderful friend in 2015. Hope the people who make these shows know how many lives they touch and what it means.

I started watching this series when I was in professional school (is that really how to say it?) with a very dear friend of mine. He passed away, due to his weak heart before we could graduate together... Seeing this series again, seeing the newest episode...I'm sure he's watching too, somewhere high above and laughing his ass off...just like we used to
I think another reason why Suguha is upset is not just only the Kendo thing but also because that her brother was in a coma on the verge of getting his brains fried for the past two years, and that definitely didn’t help with her abandonment issues during that time making her feel more alone than ever. But dang, props to the voice actors and crew who made this creepy subplot into something actually emotional and substantial.
I think it truly shows the talent of the people behind this amazing project that they could take something extremely poorly written and turn it into something truly emotional that I can imagine many people can relate quite strongly to. I have joked for many years that this is the correct version of the show but with this plot twist I can in all seriousness say that this version is superior in every Way imaginable.
Doubly so when he escaped the Death Game and only cared about Asuna. I doubt he was very teary eyed about seeing his sister, which would've just been a knife in the heart. Imagine worrying for two years over your slowly emaciating comatose brother who could die at any time, only to find, when they are awake, that they don't give to shits about you, and are instead fawning over this one random girl. I betcha that Kazuto was the one who instigated the "return to form" with their relationship, somewhat unintentionally, and that just made her retaliate.
that makes sense, with the "you abandoned me for video games" sentiment getting escalated now that because of his love for them he was no literally at risk of dying at any moment instead of spending time with her. then he comes out the game, hailed as a hero, and his biggest concern isn't her, but this other girl he met there. it would have been hard not to take that personally
I just marathoned the whole thing and deeply regret it. I mean, while doing it it was great, but then i saw there was no 18 suggested. The world is really unfair. Why is it illegal to literally enslave authors and literally whip them to literal death until they finish the whole thing ? Is it too much to ask ?
God the scene of Sugaha throwing Kirito another insult just to see him holding Asuna's hand and how much he can care about others hits so hard. The genuine regret she feels afterward for saying that too I wonder if she learned to insult him so well because of her Grandfather's mental (and possibly physical) abuse

@@Zelink108 Okay, and? Who cares? OP didn't say anything about this being a good parody, only that SWE has amazing writers and actors. "Losing sight of what a parody is" doesn't negate what they said. Fact is, SWE is absolutely killing it from a writing standpoint. They hit every emotional beat that they're trying to hit, and make you feel the anguish the characters are feeling. Their jokes land exactly where they want them to land, and are good enough that they can riff off of themselves to bring back jokes from the very first episodes, and they still hit just as good as they did back then. The voice acting is on point, and the editors are able to make the delivery stick. Even if you're right about them "losing the purpose of abridged" (which I strongly disagree with, this is a serious hot take) but even if you're right, who cares? SAOA is still a fantastic (and, yes, hilarious) show.
god, the writing. suguha obviously realizes her own behaviour is a big reason kirito shut her out, but we see it from her perspective, too. she's so frustrated that kirito quit, that he's growing more and more distant as his obsession with video games grows- she's putting down his interests and bullying him over it so much because she wants him back. but he doesn't see that, he doesn't *want* to come back to kendo, so suguha's hostility just pushes him into the digital world more. there's also the possibility that he *couldn't* continue kendo. in his monologue after he dies in the world tree, he mentions that he's asthmatic as one of the reasons real life sucks. that might actually be why his mother offered him a new hobby instead. it's just such a realistic conflict. kirito doesnt care about her anymore because she puts down the only thing he feels he's good at, so she doubles down to get him to quit. she grows to believe he's an uncaring jerk because, yeah, that's what he *was.* But from the first season, we've seen him change, and, at least somewhat, let go of that defensive shell. She hasn't seen that, though. She's just seen that games almost killed her brother, and now he's going back in. She can't fathom that he's found geniune love and affection there. But when she sees him with Asuna... That's real. Kirito holding Asuna's hand is real. He does love others- just not her. Not anymore. Instead of a dumb incest plot, she's still jealous of Asuna, but it's different. It's way way different. Why can't he fight for Suguha like that? Why doesn't he want to? THERE'S JUST SO MANY GODDAMN LAYERS TO THIS. I COULD GO ON FOREVER. TEN OUT OF TEN. ABSOLUTELY STELLAR PERFORMANCE ON ALL FRONTS.
What sells it too is how Kirito is clearly immediately repentant and regretful, and that tracks because we see at the beginning of the first season that Kirito is many things but socially graceful aint one of them and you have to imagine that he wasn't that much better before he got into videogames when he was younger. Its easy to believe he just really didn't notice how much Suguha was struggling all along.

Suguha's "im the worst" when she sees that Kirito actually REALLY cares about Asuna and how serious he is definitely is well conveyed by the voice actress. It sounds so genuine and relatable and its basically just a random line. The fact that even random lines like that, be it for comedic timing or serious character development hit so hard just shows how much attention to detail they have. THIS is why I dont mind waiting that long for a new episode. It is baffling to see them surpass their previous episodes again and again and I love it
It's a line with writing intent behind it and I love this series for it. That line hits hard when Suguha realizes that they can only connect with each other with mean spirited jabs instead of genuine support now, and that Suguha has been an ass to him for no reason this entire time.
Especially considering she believed that she thought all of his shit was somehow some weird revenge game directed at her, including Asuna. In fact, the last line doesn't even really hit me that hard because the onus was ON HER to talk to him all these years. He didn't know because she didn't tell him, instead she just started abusing him until he was so depressed about it that he started fighting back. Getting them to this point. Her 'suffering' was self-inflicted. His suffering was inflicted BY her on PURPOSE. Actress really sold the line, but Sugu's kind of a bitch.
@@Kayriel Maybe that's the point and Sugu's character arc is realizing that Kazuto COULDN'T have known about her pain because she didn't tell him. It's all so flawed and human, which is why Sugu is one of my favorites among this family of psychopaths. Good characters have genuine flaws that act against them.

Besides the sibling confrontation, Kirito's death musings were also well-written. He realized that part of him missed being in the death game because he was way more important there. He also says how messed up that is.
yeah that monologue felt very real, feeling a certain way subconsciously despite the rational part of our brain recognizing that we shouldn’t feels very human and, while different, thematically similar to the whole incest subplot but way better done
The different kinds of truama in the various SAO sub-plots are all stuff that would take a lifetime of therapy to get over. The fact that it keeps causing characters to have emotional breakdowns, sabotage relationships, or isolate themselves *within* an already isolated digital world is already in the main story, it's just not given the spotlight within the original sources the way it is here.
They fixed the incest romance and the tentacle scene. I have no doubt they can handle the 25 percent-legally-distinct-Berserk scene in the finale. Kudos to Sugu's voice actor for her raw performance at the end. The original Suguha was a bunch of lemons, and y'all made LennonDrake out of her.

If you enjoyed this, I highly recommend the original light novels! They seem to be referencing Kirito's backstory that was cut from the anime with this scene, and hilariously enough, the abridged series overall seems to be a more faithful adaptation of the original novels than the anime ever was, haha. The anime cut literally so much of Kirito's personality and backstory. It's honestly kind of painful. He was such an interesting character in the books.
In the OG, Suguha gets the reveal. In HERE, KAZUTO gets the reveal. Seriously, Something Witty is epic at turning an established plot into something unique and something even greater. ✨️
@@professorhaystacks6606 I nearly did too because this is so much better, but throughout the OG, Suguha never knew until this moment (when she backs away after begging him to not go back in the boss room) that Kirito was Kazuto. The one thing that confirmed it was him saying he has to save Asuna (which he said to her many times as Kazuto but never as Kirito until then). HERE, Suguha knew the entire time after their first meeting but it was KAZUTO who's fully in the dark. In both versions, Kazuto didn't know Leafa was Suguha but this version is deeper because of how much more depth Suguha's pain is given. Because in the OG she had started to develop a crush on Kirito and in so doing, she was gradually replacing her resentment for Kazuto with her love of Kirito. HERE, she DOESN'T have a crush but instead she's pissed because she's seeing a side of Kazuto that was never shown in respect to HER -- the desire to fight for something he cares about other than himself. She's become so angry at Kazuto after they parted ways that she thinks he genuinely doesn't care about her, his own sister; those feelings peaked after seeing his resolve to fight and nearly die to a nigh-invincible boss AGAIN just for someone else. But Kazuto unfortunately was never able to do the same for her.
@@BL-9065 Yeah, I loved how they turned that around! Similar with the Aincrad Arc, in the original, all the plot with Kayaba just… happens to him and he is dragged along. Heathcliff is the one to challenge him to the duel to join their guild, and he is also the one that makes the terms and sets the stage for their later fight to the death. Having Kirito take proactive action just makes it _so_ much better!

Gotta disagree. The voice acting was great, but the logic behind her entire beef with her brother is stupid. Im sure its better than the original, but this felt like some of the weakest writing to come out of SAO abridged IMO.
@@AonDuine077i don't really think so, because all she wanted was really just her brother's affection (when they were little, and not only that, she was interested in kendo herself) though when he left like that she felt abandoned and started to try to get him to come back in various ways, such as criticizing what he liked too, videogames and computers and all that. Though considered what he said earlier he apparently has asthma which could explain why the mother suggested coding instead of kendo. The sister's behaviour causes the brother to form a shield around himself and starting to shut her off, due to that she feels the relationship threatened and like it's even more distant than before, making her feel betrayed and getting her to hate him as we see in recent episodes, he even almost died because of videogames and he still didn't give up on his hobby- He has changed in the time he has spent in sao, had character development and learned how to care a little more about others, even love them as he loves Asuna, so that's why after she sees the scene where he holds her hand like that her attitude seems conflicted even more, to the point she starts crying as soon as she meets him in-game, the game acting a bit as a sort of way to talk to her brother because she is her but at the same time someone else (referencing the fact on how she likes to keep private life and game life separated). Now, after she starts realizing he's capable of caring for others and fight for the things he loves, she feels sad and hurt because the old Kirito didn't fight and do this for her. (the problem though is that Kirito never saw it like that in the first place, he didn't know what was going on in her head, just as she didn't know what was going on in his, plus they were much younger and youmger people find it much harder to put themselves in others shoes and understand others, they also tend to be more irrational and just as the adjective gets the name from the noun, childish. This is why i believe it was incredibly well thought just as the rest of the series (incredibly better than the original version as well, plus i do not support incest so that goes there as well), of course we may have different opinions though but that's why i'm writing this, so that i can see others point of view as well-- (i'm all for it when it comes to theorizing i love it cuz it's like a puzzle aND I SHOULD STOP TALKING- also i'm not saying it's right what she did because it had big repercussions on Kirito's personality as well, i'm just trying to portray what probably happened in her mind at the time)

I love when Kirito called Asuna "Yeah, Lucifer, maybe", you can hear the affection in his tone. It's a subtle combination of the tone you would use to call your partner "a big dummy" and the tone you would use to convey "my every waking moment is an abstract sort of Hell because I love you" and that's pretty much their relationship. Hell, if they weren't married, it would be fairly safe to say that they don't even really HAVE a relationship in this season at all.
The ultimate triumph of SAOA is that it lures you in with the comedy gold associated with Abridging series, but hooks you deep with loveable characters and emotional storylines. SWE gives you more than just five minutes of chuckles. They give you FEELS. Or, as someone dapper once put it, "like a tapeworm burrowing deep in a fat man's gut."
This show, in every way, is what SAO should have been. Its real, from people who play, who fight and suffer... and its made with love through and through... not writers who have never played. "... and gorge on his left overs... daddy didn't raise no quitters" SWE, thanks for making this series. We love this with all of out hearts.

Can we all just take a moment to recognize LennonDrake's performance as Suguha in this episode? Especially that rant at the very end. That was some phenomenal voice acting, you could really feel the emotion in all of her lines. Absolutely amazing, professional quality VA work on her part. Bravo.
I will never forgive SWE for making me like SAO, but you guys REALLY did improve just about everything with this series. I can't wait to see the next episode, and see how Kirito handles the BBEG this time. Something tells me he's not getting off as easily as he did in SAO proper.

Maybe that's why his mom pulled him out and offered him an alternative instead, and knowing how little Kirito talks about his problems maybe he didn't tell Suguha that that was the reason why he didn't fought against the decision. It was for his health, not for him just getting bored.
So, Suguha playing how fun Kendo was without him must have felt like she was taunting him. Like 'Haha, I have so much fun in the sport you like so much and that you can't do because you have fragile lungs!'

Im waiting for the entire alfheim arc to be completed before watching any of it because that storyline was so uncomfortable to watch front to end and I can't get disappointed like that again. The Suguha outburst is the longest I've ever seen SAOA go without a joke and I am so glad it happened. The emotion they put into it made a scene 10× better than the original. That part is truly a masterpiece.

I am wholeheartedly convised that they binged all of SAO on mute and just brainstormed what they could fill the scenes with and i love it (seriously though, the writing is such perfection and the voice acting is so perfect)
They actually seem to be referencing the original (HIGHLY SUPERIOR TO THE OFFICIAL ANIME) light novels with this episode! Much to my incredible joy, they appear to be adding back in Kirito's extensively fucked up and traumatizing backstory from the novels that the anime cut entirely. But yeah, the writing team behind this abridged series is awesome in general.
It sells their work short. They took everything stupid about original and fixed it, like original Sword Art Online being terrible game become a plotline here.

Just realized that Kazuto's asthma line in the World Tree at 20:38 could explain why his mom wanted him to stop learning Kendo. It's a perfectly reasonable explanation for why his mom wouldn't want him to pursue such a physical sport.
And Kazuto probably hid it from Sugu so he wouldn't seem weak. Which only made it worse when she tried to get him to go back to Kendo by showing off how fun it was. For Kazuto it just felt like she was rubbing in his face all the things she could do, but he couldn't because of his asthma. It also plays into why he loves games so much. They're a competitive field where he isn't limited by his condition.
Amazing writing SWE. It fits Kazuto's character perfectly, and also hints at the true reason behind the relationship breakdown. A miscommunication because Kazuto didn't tell her about his asthma.
EDIT: It might even have originally been that Kazuto didn't want Sugu to feel bad that she could do Kendo, but he couldn't. Just, sad to imagine, yet entirely in character for all parties.

It's these kinda things that make each episode worth the wait. They may take half a year per episode, but that's only because they are taking every step they need to take to write actual gold.

Fan theory. Trisha has been secretly helping out Asuna with her escapes. She can't do much since they might suspect her and she doesn't have the right kind of access as a modeler, but between realizing the purpose of the experiments and her undying hate for Shoji, she has plenty of reasons to wanna help. In return, Asuna helps make Shoji's life hell from her end with every escape attempt. I bet she even managed to slip Asuna some personal details to help with the trauma. Like the fact that Shoji owns a dog.

What makes Asuna's torture of Shoji all the better is that the game has an incredibly low pain level. So Asuna's torture of them is so immense that it actually makes them feel immense pain, or she psychologically tortures them so badly that they are still afraid of her. And both options are equally likely knowing her character.

Their mom pulled him out of kendo because he has asthma and that was never explained to suguha so when she’s trying to make sports fun it’s showing off things he can’t do.

I can't take VAs seriously when they do that exaggerated "cutesy" anime voice. Maybe because I grew up with Spanish dubs, not english ones, and they talk like normal people on those ones. So the performance is lost on me.

@@tufflucal4037 "Technically not blood related" is just an excuse. Reki totally wanted them to be but realized it would alienate some readers. Though, to be honest, that's not even the biggest issue. The real issue is the decision to keep adding waifus to Kirito's harem for some bloody reason. Even the cat and mom fairies started hitting on him. The abridged series shows that you don't need it to be a romance to have a good story, and, in fact, toning down the wish fulfillment wankery actually makes the whole story more compelling. I love that they focused on the Asuna romance and dropped the sister/cousin romance entirely.
i love how they transformed asuna's scenes with the tentacle guys and suguha's plot line. and having kirito crash into the wall not purely out of desperation but to try and glitch through actually makes sense

A long time ago, I started watching this series with a dear friend.. she is no longer with us, but every time you post a new episode I get to spend 15 minutes to half an hour laughing and smiling, knowing how much she would have loved it. I know this isn't why you make this, but I cannot thank you enough for what you do, it truly means the world to me
I've a similar story with Hellsing Abridged. Lost a wonderful friend in 2015. Hope the people who make these shows know how many lives they touch and what it means.

Seeing this series again, seeing the newest episode...I'm sure he's watching too, somewhere high above and laughing his ass off...just like we used to

I think another reason why Suguha is upset is not just only the Kendo thing but also because that her brother was in a coma on the verge of getting his brains fried for the past two years, and that definitely didn’t help with her abandonment issues during that time making her feel more alone than ever. But dang, props to the voice actors and crew who made this creepy subplot into something actually emotional and substantial.
I think it truly shows the talent of the people behind this amazing project that they could take something extremely poorly written and turn it into something truly emotional that I can imagine many people can relate quite strongly to. I have joked for many years that this is the correct version of the show but with this plot twist I can in all seriousness say that this version is superior in every Way imaginable.
Especially with how he came out of the coma with the whole country hailing him as a hero.
Doubly so when he escaped the Death Game and only cared about Asuna. I doubt he was very teary eyed about seeing his sister, which would've just been a knife in the heart. Imagine worrying for two years over your slowly emaciating comatose brother who could die at any time, only to find, when they are awake, that they don't give to shits about you, and are instead fawning over this one random girl. I betcha that Kazuto was the one who instigated the "return to form" with their relationship, somewhat unintentionally, and that just made her retaliate.

"Losing sight of what a parody is" doesn't negate what they said. Fact is, SWE is absolutely killing it from a writing standpoint. They hit every emotional beat that they're trying to hit, and make you feel the anguish the characters are feeling. Their jokes land exactly where they want them to land, and are good enough that they can riff off of themselves to bring back jokes from the very first episodes, and they still hit just as good as they did back then. The voice acting is on point, and the editors are able to make the delivery stick.
Even if you're right about them "losing the purpose of abridged" (which I strongly disagree with, this is a serious hot take) but even if you're right, who cares? SAOA is still a fantastic (and, yes, hilarious) show.

god, the writing. suguha obviously realizes her own behaviour is a big reason kirito shut her out, but we see it from her perspective, too. she's so frustrated that kirito quit, that he's growing more and more distant as his obsession with video games grows- she's putting down his interests and bullying him over it so much because she wants him back. but he doesn't see that, he doesn't *want* to come back to kendo, so suguha's hostility just pushes him into the digital world more. there's also the possibility that he *couldn't* continue kendo. in his monologue after he dies in the world tree, he mentions that he's asthmatic as one of the reasons real life sucks. that might actually be why his mother offered him a new hobby instead.
it's just such a realistic conflict. kirito doesnt care about her anymore because she puts down the only thing he feels he's good at, so she doubles down to get him to quit. she grows to believe he's an uncaring jerk because, yeah, that's what he *was.* But from the first season, we've seen him change, and, at least somewhat, let go of that defensive shell. She hasn't seen that, though. She's just seen that games almost killed her brother, and now he's going back in. She can't fathom that he's found geniune love and affection there. But when she sees him with Asuna... That's real. Kirito holding Asuna's hand is real. He does love others- just not her. Not anymore.
Instead of a dumb incest plot, she's still jealous of Asuna, but it's different. It's way way different. Why can't he fight for Suguha like that? Why doesn't he want to?
THERE'S JUST SO MANY GODDAMN LAYERS TO THIS. I COULD GO ON FOREVER. TEN OUT OF TEN. ABSOLUTELY STELLAR PERFORMANCE ON ALL FRONTS.
What sells it too is how Kirito is clearly immediately repentant and regretful, and that tracks because we see at the beginning of the first season that Kirito is many things but socially graceful aint one of them and you have to imagine that he wasn't that much better before he got into videogames when he was younger. Its easy to believe he just really didn't notice how much Suguha was struggling all along.

Suguha's "im the worst" when she sees that Kirito actually REALLY cares about Asuna and how serious he is definitely is well conveyed by the voice actress. It sounds so genuine and relatable and its basically just a random line. The fact that even random lines like that, be it for comedic timing or serious character development hit so hard just shows how much attention to detail they have. THIS is why I dont mind waiting that long for a new episode. It is baffling to see them surpass their previous episodes again and again and I love it
That line hit harder than the last scene imo
It's a line with writing intent behind it and I love this series for it. That line hits hard when Suguha realizes that they can only connect with each other with mean spirited jabs instead of genuine support now, and that Suguha has been an ass to him for no reason this entire time.
Especially considering she believed that she thought all of his shit was somehow some weird revenge game directed at her, including Asuna. In fact, the last line doesn't even really hit me that hard because the onus was ON HER to talk to him all these years. He didn't know because she didn't tell him, instead she just started abusing him until he was so depressed about it that he started fighting back. Getting them to this point. Her 'suffering' was self-inflicted. His suffering was inflicted BY her on PURPOSE.
Actress really sold the line, but Sugu's kind of a bitch.
@@Kayriel Maybe that's the point and Sugu's character arc is realizing that Kazuto COULDN'T have known about her pain because she didn't tell him. It's all so flawed and human, which is why Sugu is one of my favorites among this family of psychopaths. Good characters have genuine flaws that act against them.

Besides the sibling confrontation, Kirito's death musings were also well-written. He realized that part of him missed being in the death game because he was way more important there. He also says how messed up that is.
yeah that monologue felt very real, feeling a certain way subconsciously despite the rational part of our brain recognizing that we shouldn’t feels very human and, while different, thematically similar to the whole incest subplot but way better done
The different kinds of truama in the various SAO sub-plots are all stuff that would take a lifetime of therapy to get over.
The fact that it keeps causing characters to have emotional breakdowns, sabotage relationships, or isolate themselves *within* an already isolated digital world is already in the main story, it's just not given the spotlight within the original sources the way it is here.

If you enjoyed this, I highly recommend the original light novels! They seem to be referencing Kirito's backstory that was cut from the anime with this scene, and hilariously enough, the abridged series overall seems to be a more faithful adaptation of the original novels than the anime ever was, haha. The anime cut literally so much of Kirito's personality and backstory. It's honestly kind of painful. He was such an interesting character in the books.

@@professorhaystacks6606 I nearly did too because this is so much better, but throughout the OG, Suguha never knew until this moment (when she backs away after begging him to not go back in the boss room) that Kirito was Kazuto. The one thing that confirmed it was him saying he has to save Asuna (which he said to her many times as Kazuto but never as Kirito until then).
HERE, Suguha knew the entire time after their first meeting but it was KAZUTO who's fully in the dark. In both versions, Kazuto didn't know Leafa was Suguha but this version is deeper because of how much more depth Suguha's pain is given. Because in the OG she had started to develop a crush on Kirito and in so doing, she was gradually replacing her resentment for Kazuto with her love of Kirito. HERE, she DOESN'T have a crush but instead she's pissed because she's seeing a side of Kazuto that was never shown in respect to HER -- the desire to fight for something he cares about other than himself. She's become so angry at Kazuto after they parted ways that she thinks he genuinely doesn't care about her, his own sister; those feelings peaked after seeing his resolve to fight and nearly die to a nigh-invincible boss AGAIN just for someone else. But Kazuto unfortunately was never able to do the same for her.

@@BL-9065 Yeah, I loved how they turned that around! Similar with the Aincrad Arc, in the original, all the plot with Kayaba just… happens to him and he is dragged along. Heathcliff is the one to challenge him to the duel to join their guild, and he is also the one that makes the terms and sets the stage for their later fight to the death. Having Kirito take proactive action just makes it _so_ much better!

Gotta disagree. The voice acting was great, but the logic behind her entire beef with her brother is stupid. Im sure its better than the original, but this felt like some of the weakest writing to come out of SAO abridged IMO.

@@AonDuine077i don't really think so, because all she wanted was really just her brother's affection (when they were little, and not only that, she was interested in kendo herself) though when he left like that she felt abandoned and started to try to get him to come back in various ways, such as criticizing what he liked too, videogames and computers and all that. Though considered what he said earlier he apparently has asthma which could explain why the mother suggested coding instead of kendo.
The sister's behaviour causes the brother to form a shield around himself and starting to shut her off, due to that she feels the relationship threatened and like it's even more distant than before, making her feel betrayed and getting her to hate him as we see in recent episodes, he even almost died because of videogames and he still didn't give up on his hobby- He has changed in the time he has spent in sao, had character development and learned how to care a little more about others, even love them as he loves Asuna, so that's why after she sees the scene where he holds her hand like that her attitude seems conflicted even more, to the point she starts crying as soon as she meets him in-game, the game acting a bit as a sort of way to talk to her brother because she is her but at the same time someone else (referencing the fact on how she likes to keep private life and game life separated).
Now, after she starts realizing he's capable of caring for others and fight for the things he loves, she feels sad and hurt because the old Kirito didn't fight and do this for her. (the problem though is that Kirito never saw it like that in the first place, he didn't know what was going on in her head, just as she didn't know what was going on in his, plus they were much younger and youmger people find it much harder to put themselves in others shoes and understand others, they also tend to be more irrational and just as the adjective gets the name from the noun, childish.
This is why i believe it was incredibly well thought just as the rest of the series (incredibly better than the original version as well, plus i do not support incest so that goes there as well), of course we may have different opinions though but that's why i'm writing this, so that i can see others point of view as well-- (i'm all for it when it comes to theorizing i love it cuz it's like a puzzle aND I SHOULD STOP TALKING- also i'm not saying it's right what she did because it had big repercussions on Kirito's personality as well, i'm just trying to portray what probably happened in her mind at the time)

That ending scene hits like a truck. They took the most cringe part of the cringiest story arc and turned it into an emotionally powerful story.
I love when Kirito called Asuna "Yeah, Lucifer, maybe", you can hear the affection in his tone. It's a subtle combination of the tone you would use to call your partner "a big dummy" and the tone you would use to convey "my every waking moment is an abstract sort of Hell because I love you" and that's pretty much their relationship. Hell, if they weren't married, it would be fairly safe to say that they don't even really HAVE a relationship in this season at all.
The ultimate triumph of SAOA is that it lures you in with the comedy gold associated with Abridging series, but hooks you deep with loveable characters and emotional storylines. SWE gives you more than just five minutes of chuckles. They give you FEELS.
Or, as someone dapper once put it, "like a tapeworm burrowing deep in a fat man's gut."

This show, in every way, is what SAO should have been. Its real, from people who play, who fight and suffer... and its made with love through and through... not writers who have never played.

Can we all just take a moment to recognize LennonDrake's performance as Suguha in this episode? Especially that rant at the very end. That was some phenomenal voice acting, you could really feel the emotion in all of her lines. Absolutely amazing, professional quality VA work on her part. Bravo.
