I made a commitment lately to paint immediately after watching a video. It is working great....I think I will paint my golden foreground and top sky together first. I will leave white on sides but let both sides run. I too am very glad I had discovered your advice! Big Thank you from Vancouver Island. And very happy and healthy 2024 in couple of days...You are a true artist but also a great teacher. Lessons are so much fun I am becoming addicted!

I really liked adding the grass in front after the lighter and mid values. It surprised me but I think you said it let you know what the values needed to be there. I forget that you can add limbs from the trunk or come into the trunk, thank you for that reminder, among others. Cheap joes has a set of what they call cheap brushes, they have a yellow handle. For me they are great for lifting among other things. The set is great and it will be around our house for a very long time. Please keep visiting with us, when you are painting, it is very helpful.

Oh boy, Steve! This is wonderful. My Steve Mitchell paints arrived this afternoon, and I got my swatches done, and checked my paint box to see which ones I didn't have. I found out that there are five colors I don't have, so I will get those as I need them, and I will also put in the palette the colors you mentioned you would like to have been able to add (which I already had in tubes), then add a few favorites of my own, such as buff titanium, and burnt sienna, and Hematite genuine. I love that Princeton Elite brush you used in the video. I always learn so much when you paint landscapes. Each lesson teaches me something new. Thanks for the video, and thanks for the lovely Steve Mitchell Daniel Green Paints! The cover to the box is on my bulletin board!

I love this! Thank you, Steve, for another inspiring session! You said a number of things that were just what I needed to hear. Kudos to Wet Paint: I ordered my palette right after I watched your unveiling video. I received an email from them this morning saying they were very sorry but they sold out of the palettes in 12 hours and their inventory software didn’t communicate that message to the shopping software so they oversold them. The good news is they have confirmed that they can obtain enough additional palettes to cover all the oversold folks (me) and all those on the waiting list. PLUS, they’re sending me a Hahnemuhle Zigzig book for the inconvenience. That’s great customer care!

watching your vid on landscape color break down and was pleased to see that you are using a Princeton brush. I'm a newbie when it comes to watercolor and blindly bought a bunch of Princeton 4350 round Lauren brushes. I've tried other brushes but I found that they work best for me. I like the stiffness of the brush since I'm still learning brush control.

I can't seem to see what to change, shift, leave out in a reference. Also, enhancing the minimal colour changes in a reference . Thanks Steve, I'm going to try and see with a different eye.

Wondering if watercolor has grown on anyone who didn't care for it that much at first. I really want to like it given how portable and low maintenance it is, but I just can't seem to warm up to the wishy-washiness look (for lack of a better term). I bought a super cheap kid's set to see how it goes.

Wonderful techniques I learned here! I've been struggling with some sagebrush. Had no idea how to do it. These techniques are perfect for it!
Gotta crawfish: I was using generic 300 watercolor paper and some school paints left over from son's last few years at school. I was trying to make the best of it. I broke down and bought Arches rough & Cotman paints. Like night & day difference on the performance! Gee wiz. I'm in Turkey. Arches, as well as all foreign art supplies, have a 50% mark up for import & duty tax, but I bit the bullet and bought it anyway. As long as I have the money I'll never go back to lower-performing watercolor papers and will upgrade to better paints, also. I appreciate you not calling me out me on the silly comment I made a week ago. 😅
Great job and thanks for sharing your skills.

Great result and lesson. I love Green Apatite Genuine and Quinacridone Gold, I’ve just ordered larger tubes. The granulation is fantastic and really helps achieve an interesting look. I’ve got small tubes of Sodalite and Lunar Blue, and just ordered Hematite. Love Daniel Smith and in particular the many granulating colours as they seem to help the painting ‘paint itself’ if you know what I mean!

‘Got the new DS palette in the mail today, and it’s spectacular! The chosen colors are great, some are new to me, and this is my first time with this brand. I really do like them...smooth and creamy, highly pigmented. I use Schmincke watercolors almost exclusively, but I think I might be incorporating more DS into my palettes. Steve, you have to do more of these or at least up the production on this one so everybody who wants one gets a chance to order.

Hey Steve I was wondering if you have tried the PB16 or Phalo blue turquoise. DaVinci seems to have an advantage with price and gradation. It reminds me of Cerulean without the granulation and might have more value in my palette because of not being so opaque. The greens are gorgeous with it and it lifts well. Anyways just when I don’t think I add a color then I do. Anyways I really really recommend it. Lovely painting and I couldn’t agree more about practicing techniques. And I love to make my own Moonglow with quin coral, Viridian and French Ultramarine and put it in a pan. Somehow that corally color just causes a neat effect and increases the lightfastness too. I always love your suggestions and tutorials. They are very practical. Thank you and take care.

Steve, I have alway been in awe of Albrecht Dürer study, “The Great Piece of Turf” that resides in Vienna’s Albertine Museum. When I saw your painting on this page, it suddenly occurred to me that you would be the perfect teacher to analyze that great work. Where on his paper did. Dürer begin? Where did he proceed from there? I’m not suggesting that you make a reproduction, but rather, perform an autopsy. Thanks!

Bravo! That was so clear. It was really helpful to see how you organized your painting. I find landscapes have so much information that they're hard to simplify. And I'll have to go and pull out my green apatite and play with it again. Thanks again!

This picture is nice. I can learn from this. Your background to your foreground with your choice of colour. I have painted landscape, but changing my colours would be helpful. Thankyou

Hello ! Do you have any ideas why ‘sometimes’ when I layer my washes they can have a chalky look about them, (it does not happen all of the time) & this is why I am a little confused what I can be doing wrong. I use W&N & Arches paper ( & happens on both papers) and W&N tube & pan paints. I remember how happy you were to reach over 400 & I still get happy watching you that day, so I am thrilled for you to see you now have over 242 thousand subscribers! “It is because you are so dam good” Hey! I am going to join your Patreon later today.

Thanks so much! Not sure on your chalkiness but its usually due to a particular pigment.

Steve Excellent as usual, I have owned his set for nearly six years, they are very good and generally comfortable, I find I use the 2inch very seldom, for them to be effective you definitely have to have good paper.

I think one of my best purchases from DS are the undersea green, the sap green and the moonglow. I have not seen a palette come close with the colors even with the new addition of DS their new sap green.
